My father took his life in November 2019. No note... somehow this song allows me to grieve his death in the reality of how this happened. He was a bitter man who lived a bitter life. My prayer is I can one day see him in Heaven in our perfection... I pray he will be there waiting on me...
Rest in peace to your father.
In my case, tears flow suddenly even after many years and time. No sentence will comfort you, but I think it is for your father that you smile and live a happy life every day.

I've been listening to As Falls Wichita album since 1980. It's still in my "only 10 discs on a desert island" group. I hear new subtleties each and every time I listen.
When I first heard parts of it on a jazz station, I knew I had to run out and get it. Saw them twice in the early 80s.
This song really helped me through a bout of grief today

It's one of their most wonderful pieces of music. This piece was not a tribute to Bill Evans, but it was dedicated to Bill Evans, who died at the time this album was being recorded. They wrote this piece a few years before Bill died. However, Bill Evans is always present in Lyle's piano playing, so almost everything Lyle played is almost like a tribute to Bill anyway.

This is beautiful. There is a quite sense of loss in this song. As the sky turned gray, it's a reminder that nothing stays the same. The days will inevitably pass away but the melodies will linger on.

I remember writing this comment while in "my new" office. I turned this on at work, at a place that I didn't belong and finally left.
I was rebelling inside because this is the music and soundtrack of mine, and my best friend's art studio. One that we had to give up because we were subject to two back to back fraudulent lawsuits, both: we won.
This music reminds me to get back to my art and set up a studio again

...Many, many well deserved observations have been made about Mr. Metheny, et al...Have never read one that would require disagreement...All of this generosity distills down to one Dynamic regarding him...Time does not dilute his Music...Time does not scar his Music...Time, if anything, has gently breathed a gorgeous Patina on his Music...What was written forty years ago, sounds as powerful, thought provoking and dreams of the Soul today...The colors of his music have always dazzled me...I see and feel new colors as the years quietly drift...I think that Mr. Metheny has a good Soul...Only a good Soul could not only create this Music...But desire to place it in the Wind & Clouds...And let it travel Hither & Yon...Pax.

Thanks for your comment. There is no original song I could not find and share on TH-cam but this version. It was quite dry to share or introduce Pat's music to 'the normal' young age people :) and friends because of visuals so that I caught a moment middle of the day in my house which reflected Lyle's life to me such as clouds and a bird. The good thing is the normal my friend start to listen to Pat's music:) thanks again and enjoy your music life.

Listening to this song today I have an odd sense that I never really knew it. It certainly brings up sad feelings and added to that a sense of a lacking resolution.
After this I will listen to Pat's "If I Could." That is also a melancholic tune, but for me it contains a message of hope. We all have our crosses to bear in the life but if we just look a little more intently we can see a dim, but certain, light on the other side of the veil.

I saw Bill play at the Keystone Korner in San Francisco a week before he died. The KK was located on Vallejo St in the North Beach neighborhood, only a few blocks from where I used to live. This fella came out on stage and asked if we'd kinda keep it down because
they were recording the concert that evening. The recordings came out years later on the Milestone Label as 'The Last Waltz'. I was
shocked and saddened when I heard on the radio (KJAZ) that he was gone. He was my favorite jazz pianist and always will be

Have been listening to Bill Evans lately. There is a lot of nostalgia in his music. The way his piano notes linger in the air lets you insert your emotions on his pieces. Both Mr. Mays and Mr. Metheny achieves that quality in this track.

"Dear Friend" has that nostalgic feeling of a long letter to loved ones you are no longer able to be with freely. Using the title and your Waterloo Station video as a guide, it recreates the atmosphere of a friend telling the other that he is well, life is different there... maybe a little lonely and that he misses having a barbecue with him and the pack (there are a five note part that appears to tell "like we used to be"). The final part with a thicker instrumentation indicates that while he is still homesick he is finally making some friends in his new home.

And you may heard about the 'Squid Game' from Netflix. Jeail Jung who is the Squid game music director play harmonica for this song. If you haven't watched Squid game please watch it is great series. haven't heard this version; symbiotic interplay between Lyle & Pat. 15 Sept, 1980; the date of Bill Evans's passing. Bill was booked 2 tour here in Oz Sept, 1980 .. I remember Jim McLeod on "Jazz Tracks" spruiking the event .. sadly wasn't 2 b. Bill was a huge influence on Lyle's playing .. supremely beautiful with a tendency 2 lay back on the beat. An irreplaceable part of the Pat Metheny Band sound. Yeah, rest easy Lyle.

In 1989 I was planning my first holiday in years and chose to visit The Maldives. During the weeks prior to my trip I played tennis once a week after work with a colleague. After our game we would return to her apartment for a drink and a chat and when she asked what music I would take on my trip I confessed that I hadn't thought about. Remember these were the days of Cassette tapes and the Sony Walkman. she loaned me a cassette of 'As Falls" and of the dozen tapes that I packed it was the only one I listened to for the entire holiday.. It was also on that holiday that I met my now wife, 35 years on. I still listen to that album in awe. (Especially September 15th)
