Hey scotty, I'm looking for a new 4x4 vehicle. I duck hunt, fish, and my wife and I like to kayak. I live in an area where I have to use 4x4 on a 02 f150 fx4 with knobby tires to pull a 18ft aluminum boat up my "driveway". I'm wanting something more reliable, and unfortunately the wife is resistant to a manual transmission. Was looking at early 90's jeep Cherokee's with 4.0L 4x4. Anything else I should be looking for if a deal comes up?
scotty, these short videos are causing youtube to not send notifications for whatver reason. i tried to ring to bell on your shorts channel and youtube wouldnt allow it and it might do the same to this channel
For burning oil, I wouldn’t recommend just going straight for pistons rings. As someone who’s owned a lot of shitcans inspect the motor. I’ve seen a lot more valve stem seals than rings fail!
And Blue 🔵 smoke means your burning Oil usually from worn piston rings, or bad Valve stem seals. Scotty... You amaze me with all the knowledge you have and share! I continue to watch... Even with me working on my own vehicles since I was 16! Now I'm 65. Yep... With experience comes knowledge!!! I've had 3 Toyota Camry in past years. Not disappointed An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
it doesn't ALWAYS mean bad piston rings or bad valve seals, but it does mean that the engine is burning oil. Some oil will naturally make its way past the rings and seals REGARDLESS if it's brand new because nothing is perfect. edit: you will most commonly see this from a cold start because the engine parts haven't come up to operating temp which means the seals are going to be slightly more spaced out more than normal from their mating surfaces.
My mechanic said the white bluish smoke was a problem with head gasket as I was using a quart of oil a month and catalytic converter or new engine. He has 35 years experience, a friends 27 year old son asked when was the last time I had changed the PCV valve, Had no clue what that was, turns out the part on my 2001Z28 cost 5.99 cents and took just less than 3 minutes to replace. Problem solved within 2 minutes. Smoke completely clear. 5.99 part versus 4,200 engine replacement. You're welcome.
This was happening to my wife's Nissan Murano. We've probably had 10 oil changes in the last 3 years and when we took it to get checked, the guy comes back and says she needs a new engine. How?? There is white smoke coming out the pipe and I thought it was something to do with the head gasket but Nissan said we neglected to get enough oil changes and denied our claim to fix it. It's fully synthetic oil, how is that even possible? Now I see this post about the PCV valve and it makes complete sense to me. Thank you for this option. I had no idea this was even a thing.
I went and looked at a Dodge Challenger with a 5.7 hemi in it the other day and I heard Og Scotty words of wisdom whisper in my ear “I’d die before I bought a used hemi”
If you buy the police model with the 5.7 you get a steal! The police department does all the maintenance on it including fixing fhe lifter issue. Great buy. They're reliable too
Back in the 1960s my friends and I drove around in an old Corvair that burned so much oil the joke was " fill 'er up with oil and check the gas. A guy in a chopper with no muffler was behind us at a red light reving his motor. Jerry gunned that Corvair twice and you couldn't even see the guy or cycle. Good times! We used 50 weight oil in that sucker.
They really should make classes with people like him for kids to have a early start as mechanics.would be interesting what kinda mechanic would be if taught from junior high day 1 at a advanced degree.
Yep I have that issue right now with my 2003 Nissan 350Z Touring. It's running too rich where I put my fingers and see black dirt on my fingers. On top of that I hear rattling sounds in my catalytic converter I believe when I raise my car between 2K or 3K RPM. I will fix that since I am a student at a community college majoring in automotive mechanics.
Hey man I’m very impressed with the videos you’re putting out and please keep on doing it because most people don’t know what is wrong with their cars or trucks and you’re a blessing to us all. Thank you so much.I would suggest you get a channel I am sure that you would get millions of people turned into your channel
Keep up the great work, Scotty. Your videos have saved me untold amounts of money in repairs and shop fees. So glad to see you're still out there and revving your engines. 🤙🏻
White can be head gasket or catalytic converter, unbolt your exhaust right after the cat let it hang down, pressurize the coolant and see if any leaks out before you start tearing apart the engine👍🏻
Thank you Scotty you always treat us so well, finally got the miat started but she’s smokin n got some sludge in the exhaust ima try another basemap i think it may be too rich
I was driving behind a guy who’s exhaust was smoking and I could smell oil so I waited till I got to a light and got next to him and was able to get his attention and told him that his engine was burning oil and to get it checked out and he was actually very appreciative for me telling him because working in a welding shop that uses oil to cut stuff and no the smell of burning oil all too well
Ive been watching this man for the last 3 years and i am at the moment a young mechanic and i take everything this man says as if it was the word of god people like him are rare
It you also do an air intake cleaning for your Throttle Body & Intake Manifold or directly spray Intake valve cleaner into your Intake valve openings through your Spark plug housings and white smoke comes out that is a good sign that you are cleaning carbon deposits from your Intake system as well as your Intake valve chambers.
My sons 97 Tacoma went through two catalytic converter’s and his tail pipe was very black. After a few hours of diagnosis we figured out it was the fuel injectors. Changed all of them and now his truck runs like a dream. The injectors were so bad. They had 280,000 miles on them. He also picked up about 4 miles per gallon lol
Just bought a new suv. Noticed it was smoking slightly today (white) after driving 25 miles to work but it’s 50 degrees today. Should I take it back to Carmax??
Yeah my 20’ Civic si ; oil levels says 30% but we usually change it at 40-50% nd I been driving way more and randomly yesterday its been excessive smoking and Ima do A oil change and see whats up today

Normally you're right about the white smoke. However, my bmw e39 528i smokes white even in summertime. I bought it 3 years ago and put 15000 miles on it. No issue at all.
I had white smoke and added blue devil gasket sealer and it went away. Will I still pass smog? Any advice would be appreciated it's a 99 ford ranger v6 4.0 l

Blue smoke is just as often valve stem seals. Reading blue smoke is a matter of when it smokes. Bad valve stem seals will cause blue smoke on start up after the vehicle has sat for a while, or after it sits idling for a while, but generally not while diving down the highway. Bad rings will cause blue smoke all the time.
