Squishy Head Bluegill - UNDERWATER Footage! - Realistic bluegill jerk-bait streamer fly

  • A while back I created a fly that I called "the fat head squishy streamer". This was a perch color pattern and shape. These flies utilized a special long fiber dry fly dubbing from Fly Tiers Dungeon. Then I created a shell of flexible UV curing resin to give the fly a special jerk bait type motion. It kept the fly sinking very slowly, and allowed for a side to side "walk the dog" type motion. Keep in mind, the technique of using flexible UV resin is not my invention, I have seen others do this. However I haven't ever seen anyone use it with a dry fly (high floating) dubbing.
    This fly was very popular, and I have had a lot of requests for different color patterns. For a long time I have wanted to make a bluegill pattern, but bullfrog dubbing didn't come in blue, which I needed for the pattern. Finally Fly Tiers Dungeon came out with a dubbing they call "arctic snow" and it comes in lots of bright and colorful blends. Finally a squishy head streamer in a a bluegill pattern! What is different however is how this fly is shaped. The original was cylindrical, so it was as fat as it was tall. However this fly is very flat, yet tall, just like a bluegill. Which gives it even better side to side and gliding motion, just like a dying bluegill.

    Great job. I taught fly tying/fly fishing for a few different concerns and totally appreciate how you've dissected your OWN tying in order to properly instruct others. 99.9% of folks out there haven't a clue how much effort goes into something that appears effortless. Apart from that, you are also a very talented tyer and this is a great looking fly. Kudos brother.

      +Todd McCagg thank you! I never really think of myself as talented, but nice to hear that from a pro tier. Yeah, tying does look effortless sometimes, especially when watching tiers like McPhail or Bob Clouser. But your right, there is an immense amount of work that goes into learning each pattern. Lots of hours of practice.

    30 mins to tie a fly, snagged on the first cast! 😂 that would be my luck! Looks awesome! Love the vids!

      Thanks! Yeah it’s actually more like 45 minutes. But I know whatcha mean. They do work well though when tied right, but they are finicky to tie, and therefor can be frustrating. I toss about 1 out of 5 I tie due to not liking the results. If it doesn’t swim right, it’s not gonna catch right ya know?

      McFly Angler I often start tying a fly one way and half way through realize it’s not going to jive and end up turning it into something else. Keep the vids coming! I need all the inspiration I can get.

      Lol I’ve done that as well. Some of my best flies come out of this... of course I end up refining them after that, but they lead to some great ideas for sure!

      Beautiful fly! Have you considered tying them substantially more sparse? The resin head should hold the bulk for you, allowing it to still have a good profile, move plenty of water, more likely to track true. The materials should provide a nice shillouette regardless.
      Beautiful tie!!

    Looks great, and moves through the water just the same. It also can look like a wounded bait fish swimming by.

    I had just posted a question to the group fly tying hobbyist on facebook regarding tying just such a fly. I'm no expert fly tyer but I greatly appreciate your making this video and showing step by step each process and which color combination to choose and use, and why. The end product is amazing. We have Pumpkin Seed Perch in our waters which the coloration is more olive green/yellow than orange. Anyway, I doubt the bass will notice the difference. Thanks for posting this video.👍

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man, yeah these are an advanced fly, but give it a shot. I think you will like what you make. As for coloration, you can tie these in other colors. Pumpkin seeds are mostly dark olive, with some orange belly and I think some blue in the gills? Sorry I could be wrong. Use this template to make your own colors and mimic your local forage.

    That's an amazing tie. Right before this video, I watched you tie the Fat Head Squishy Streamer. Toward the closing, you showed the action in the water which is also greatly appreciated due to my curiosity. I noticed the split shot and began wondering, what would a light wrapping of lead wire on the hook shank do to the action? I was just thinking that because it appears to be rather buoyant, it might help get it down faster. Not worth it if affects the side to side action though. Also, are these relatively durable? Is a Bass going to destroy it the first time? Thanks!!

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! So yes the lead would effect the action, unless you could get it on the very back end of the hook, but you really could only do 2 or so wraps. I usually fish this on a sink tip line. Both this and the perch version.
      This is actually very durable. Smallmouth can destroy flies quick, and I’ve always ended up loosing the fly to a free before it gets destroyed. Lol.

    Beautiful looking fly. Roughly how many strikes have you had before the shape/resin is destroyed?

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man!
      I have had one that I got 5 smallmouth on, and the resin seems to be still holding up. I dont do a ton of smallmouth fishing anymore, so I haven't fished with it as much as when I designed it. I will say, the flex resin holds up really well though because its flexible. It doesn't crumble like some of the harder stuff after hard hits. It bends and flexes with each strike. Seems to me like it will hold up a long time.

    I tied one of these and it looks great ,thanks to your amazing vids, but when I went to fish it, it would not sink. I used literally the same materials as you from FTD.... any ideas? I love your videos man, thanks for all the hard work you put into them.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amount of materials really makes a difference, but stick it under water and squeeze, getting all the air out, it should sink then. If all else fails then fish it with sink tip line. Or next time if you have any issues, then wrap with a small amount of lead wrap first

    • @morganmallory1198
      @morganmallory1198 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      McFly Angler thank you, I’ll give that all a try👍🏻

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to help. I will say, most of the dubbing is dry fly dubbing. Which I used on purpose to give it more of a buoyancy... I wanted a fly that wouldn’t sink too quickly, however you gotta get the amounts just right or it will float. Took me about 8-10 of these to get just right when I came up with the pattern. Then I still have 1-2 every once in a while come out not as expected. It’s an advanced fly for sure...

I think I used pearl web in my squishy head "perch" streamer, check that out if you want. I have 106 video's to date, and like 90 of them are fly tying video's.
