  • Midwest Machinery sent us a 9520RX John Deere and 2660VT Disc to demo and try our hand at some vertical tillage. I was really hoping this would be our opportunity to try out some no-till. Unfortunately it's just too muddy.

Looks to me like the last Family farming that land knew %100 that they would not be back the following year. They didn't want to waste the money on the fuel knowing this. I'm thinking they were TOLD they would not returning. In the end it appears you may have signed the lease a smidge late this year with the amount of rain you've been receiving. That 40 acres is going to need a solid week of sunshine to form up. Good luck Zach.

I know it's frustrated with wet spots and wishing for dry weather to get planting done. I've always frustrated with my field wet spots when I have to cross the creek but my friend of mine was telling me about a beaver dam was building up that causes the high rise water on the creek. I like the no til grain drill and it's done very good job to knock down pollen weeds for 12 years as a small farmer of myself. Best luck with your planting

We farmed about 60 miles south of your location in Chippewa County. Knowledge of the soil type and measurement of the soil temperature at the time of tillage was critical to effective planting of corn and soybeans. The concepts of No Till and minimum tillage has been around since the 1960's. I think your experience reinforces some of the real world constraints on effective use of those concepts. I would be interested to know the measured soil temperature in depth through the tillage zone in that field.

Even in our sandy soil here the VT doesn't do so good when it's wet. We VT all of our bean ground (pintos) and it works awesome....our main goal is chopping up the residue and leaving a nice flat field to plant into. We raise the trash cleaners on the planter as high as we can and it leaves a great smooth field for harvest in the fall.

Once we got up and over 9 mph and on dry ground...the dirt and all the cover starts flying, and then it actually does a pretty nice job.

40 yrs ago when started making regular trips to northern MN to relatives place, always wondered what could be done to use that corn stalk stubble left in the field. Always thought there should be some way to put to use, such as a burning fuel source for heating water/etc for steam plant. That way the corn fields could be left nearly bare when done and not require a real fair amount of tilling to bury that much stubble.
Something that could pull remaking stalk and roots, leave dirt behind, collect husks and shred/chip to sawdust state to allow collecting mass amounts at a time. And a base format for next use. Biggest task is making it cost effective.
Kind of the sugar cane process for corn stalks. Cane stalks burned to produce heat to process the sugar in the cane. Grand idea at this point.

About every ad I see for minimum tillage equipment they show it bei ng used in soil that doesn't really need tillage. Then you take it into tough conditions.... Try a JD no till drill with the in-furrow firming wheel taken off.Last resort moldboard plow and field cultuvate before it gets very dry and lumpy. Or take prevent plant and hopefully start building a good yield history on this field next year and see if you can get it tiled this summer.

The key is speed and not depth. Try pulling a 20ft unit behind the 9560R at 8-10mph at +-4" (or no 2 marker). It may work for you - it did for us.

Could you get your chisel plow out and rip it at a shallower depth to get some black ground turned up ? Or a field cultivator without the rolling baskets down ? Something to make some ridges so there is more surface area to get it to dry out.

Even I have to agree that looks like one awesome tractor. I think it was mentioned in the comments but here in the UK, if that was my field I would conventional plough maybe the top 8 - 10 inches to bury the corn trash then after a couple of days, run a power harrow over it to fluff the soil up so it drys. If you have 3 - 4 days of sun and wind on it you may then be able to drill it...

Honestly I would use that fancy horizontal tillage tool you are trying to sell plow it under wait a day or 2 and they cultivate it like 3 times should be plantable after that but be a week of work and a bit of unexpected costs. Hopefully it all works out 👍🏻

Just heavy harrow it move the trash to help dry the ground.

Our experience with a harrow on corn ground is not good at all. Bunches up in the harrows and you've got a real mess. We just bought a degelman protill for this very reason saved us on about 2800 acres this year.

Demo a Salford it’s what we use for vertical tillage for no till. It runs Rosen Coulter’s for blades but it’s setup like a field cultivator (digger 😂) The dirt isn’t that heavy here but we run it 1.5-2 inches deep. Once in the fall on a angle then opposite angle in the spring. Helps the stalks decompose chops them up more on the opposite angles. Then set the planter up for no till. This spring we straight no till planted with no tillage with the Salford. Couldn’t get 2 days in a row for things to dry out... The hills with wash outs that form and rocks, no till is the only way in this part Michigan.

I don't see any Coulters on the disks. The last disk harrow I purchased I made sure they had Coulters. When you get into sandy loam it's not too bad but when you hit the black gumbo those Coulters really help.
    Nice Video....

Hi Zack, in my part of the world (Ireland, England and northern Europe) we would plough a field like the one you tried to disk. This is the only option to bury the trash on top and allow the field to dry out. Once ploughed you can then use a disk to get a good seedbed. This might seem like old fashioned farming to you but it works for thousands of farmers working wetter and heavier soil types. P.S. don't dream of buying that tractor, reason, you can't afford it and neither can I !

My thought, the problem is the top layer of stalks so that needs to be addressed to allow sun to do its job. How about a ripper at a few inches deep. Just so you can create a trench and move the stalks aside. It may be just enough to expose enough dirt to dry it enough to run something more conventional.

I think that farm needs a bunch of tile. That helped us alot this spring pattern tiled ground got us in the field alot sooner.

That ground looks like a high clay area. We have a sticky soil like that we call it gumbo or buck shot. A chisel plow might work but do not get one that is overly wide. The more resistance the implement creates the easier it is to get stuck It is a balancing act between getting as much done as you can with each pass and not getting stuck. Taking an extra thirty minutes to get over with narrower equipment costs less time and money than several hours getting a piece of stuck equipment out.

Zach, I have worked for a farmer about 1 hour north of you near Fergus Falls for a few years and we have a Salford made vertical tillage tool for our cornstalks. I would suggest you demo a salford if you get a chance, the finish that comes from them is first rate in my book.
