I understand why the Cottonwood had to go, but it would be mildly interesting to learn how big it would have eventually gotten with so much water available. One near where I grew up was measured at 70 feet. Amazingly for all the cottonwood seeds that came from it, I never remember seeing any new Cottonwood trees grow. The early pioneers were drawn to the huge cottonwood trees as they arrived in the Midwest prairies - a place to water their horses and rest in the shade.

The bigger they get the more lightning likes them. We had one well over 120 feet tall and had an eyewitness who claimed (RIP) it was a mere sapling when he debated hand sawing it down pre1910. Massive excavator project when it got fatally struck. 8 foot wide limbs 40 feet high. When the 2/3 of the tree hit the ground the operator said the trampoline effect jumped the 40k lb excavator off the ground. A lot of regret no one got pictures of it going down. I somewhere have pictures where it made a 1000 bu cart and 300 hp tractor look comically small. I have never seen another tree in the Midwest close to how big this fenceline weed got.

My uncle always had a few sticks of dynamite stashed for periodic tree and stump removal/relocation.
Neighbor: Dang! You barely missed dropping that stump in your pickup bed. Tough luck on the truck roof.
Uncle: ya, but was trying to land it on the wood pile on the other side of the chicken coop.

Man it must be nice to not have to worry about salmon migration when hogging into a stream. We generally use HDPE plastic pipe for underground water utilities. It can be plastic welded and strung out along the edge of the trench and then dropped in and back filled. It's nice to see how you flatlanders get it done.

Nice to improve the land and getting rid of that massive tree. A big job, even with a large excavator to help you. I used to help my neighbour cutting trees on his property many years ago, but never came across such a huge trunk. Cut mostly pine or spruce trees in those days. Congratulations on the first tooth loss for your girl.

I personally use Howes Lubricant instead of WD-40. Ive found with dealing with 40-50 year old classic cars that Howes is the best for Rusty junk!!

A very interesting channel. A chainsaw secret, always have 2 chainsaws when cutting, if 1 gets stuck use the other one to get it out. No 2 cuts at once on a large tree especially a softwood. I can admit to learning this the hard way, just like in your video...
