Thanks for this video, I had this same conversation a few days ago. I can understand the frustration of talking to foreigners in Taiwan who have never been to china. It usually ends up in all attack and no understanding. it's really nice to see a level head when talking about both. also, If it makes you feel any better I have yet to find any good 麻辣香锅 or 麻辣烫 in Taiwan. there is an ok play for 麻辣烫 now in Taichung but still miss it so.

I'll be leaving China this summer but I know for a fact I'll be returning for vacations in the future. I can pick a province, make an itinerary and go for it. If you approach the country with your eyes open and an exit plan in mind, you can avoid a lot of BS whilst also getting the positive experiences of seeing everything there is to see.

I lived in Shanghai for four years. I really miss LanZhou Ramen, it's cheap and it has its own flavour. Also you can watch they making noodles. My opinion is like yours. Living in China is not that bad. Things are cheaper there, construction is really fast and education is more efficient (my English would still sucks if I didn't do there.). Although some might disagree, we can actually find some manners from Chinese that Taiwanese lack. For example, teachers in China are being respected by students, which is rare in Taiwan nowadays.
Being a teacher in Taiwan now is hard.

As a Taiwanese, I don't hate Chinese people either. I always feel great intimacy and cultural similarity while chatting with Chinese friends. What I'm unable to bear with is the CCP government. China, a country with such a profound history and human heritage, could really be an awesome country and having a promising future without the inhumane treatment of the autocratic regime.

    • @TheECSH
      @TheECSH 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

sometimes it's hard to make that distinction. Most Chinese people I met don't talk about politics much, but if you get to know them a bit deeper and talk to them on these issues, they'll still defend the CCP and have generally antagonizing views of the Western world (in terms of politics). It's indoctrinated, and I understand that it's hard to pull oneself out from that.

I’ve heard many shockingly inhumane opinions from Chinese people. These are ideas that the communist party teaches them. I know that China is not really a nation of psychopaths. Some of the people are that way, but most are not. But even the people who have a natural empathy are trained to dehumanize people who are not like them.

I watched your videos while living in Shenzhen and am now in Taipei.
Living in a free society despite the inconveniences of slightly older systems is 100% worth it for the small civil liberties like spontaneous street performances/concerts, not needing an ID to buy a train ticket or sign up for an app, not seeing propaganda signs in my apartment, not needing to go through security everywhere. I'm grateful for having experienced China, but I'm even more grateful for moving to Taiwan. Small things make a huge difference.
I do miss Taobao and all electric (aka quiet and less polluting) vehicles, but damn, no VPN/firewall is great.

What I am trying to say is that in some stores, you can use something like taobao or wechat wallet to pay instead of cash and coins.

One thing that annoys me in China is how most small businesses are only short-term operations. The owner runs the business for a short time just to save up some money, then closes the business and moves onto a new project. Whenever I find a favorite restaurant, I know that it will only be good for a few months. The quality of the food will degrade, because the owner cuts costs to temporarily boost profits. Then people stop eating there, and it closes. I wonder if this phenomenon is the same in Taiwan. I’ve heard that Japan is very different. I’ve heard that the Japanese like to run a business for a long time and try to perfect it. But I’m not sure how accurate that is, because I haven’t been to Japan. I haven’t been to Taiwan either.

That was how i found you and your two other youtuber friends in the first place, because you actually had some positive things to say about China as well.

It really is peculiar how difficult it can be to find certain foods even in supposedly worldly-metropolitan regions.
When I was in Hawai'i, I tried to find Italian ice cream. Forget it. Was cruising around with a local in downtown Honololu and even there we couldn't find that. Only Super-sticky, heavy Murk goop, average overpriced fancy-shmancy stuff, tons of frozen yoghurt or supermarket ice cream. But fine Italian self-made ice cream parlor stuff, nope. I remember when I came back to Germany I appreciated having my favorite foods again. ... ALSO fresh-pressed fruit juice preserved with vitamin C to last months uncooled. They didn't have that there, but the absurdity of concentrate-watered-down crap in a fridge, best-before 3 days. ... Some things in Germany seem so simple, yet the USA make it seem impossible. (4-ply toilet paper was also a rarity.)
And why do people obsess over ramen? It's a noodle meal that is being drowned in a shitton of watery broth. Talk about disharmony.
5:34 "the c-word that I can't say" ... communism?? 😜 Yeah, that must be it. SURELY that is very demonetized. ... Or was it demonized? 🤔
As for not trusting the CCP ... Well, DUH! It is a wise thing not to trust ANY government. That includes the Taiwanese one. I always wonder whether people like you are so happy in Taiwan compared to China that maybe you do not give an insight into what political grievances might exist and how strong critique gets. ... Poverty in Taiwan, now that would be an interesting topic. Or if you want to really be daring, ask Taiwanese whether they feel their country is a missile catcher for the USA. 😆

The main purpose of any government is to serve the people right.....
So when I look at China and how the lives of the average Chinese have improved so much over the past 40 years.....it’s really amazing. On the other hand when I look at America and how life is getting tougher for the average American.....it’s really sad.
What about foreign policy?....should we trust a country that has dumped 7 trillion into fighting wars with other countries or a country that has dumped 3 trillion into building infrastructure for trade and development with other countries.....
The media, politicians and my cognitive biases are telling me not to trust the CCP however my brain is telling me it’s the US we should be worried about.....

Frankly speaking, our primary objective in life, notwithstanding all the temptations to pursue after material gains, and power, and to hope that "our country continues to project soft power," should rather be to do the right things in life. "Meritorious deeds are performed by righteous men; nefarious ones by the wicked"

Hate to say it but Taiwan, HK and Japan are quite similar in their attitudes, manners, cleanliness and hygiene.
Japan probably preserved most of the ancient Chinese culture by incorporating it into their own.
Any thoughts about the popularity of the expat CCP loving TH-camrs?

Totally, China as a place full of beautiful natural scenery and various cultures is indeed having their good parts. But sadly, the education and policy that CCP enforces literally ruined everything including the reputation of China and it creates a huge barrier between Taiwanese and Chinese. I wouldn't blame either side for judging each other since the given circumstances is like this. I'd like to invite people to open up their mind, but there are somethings worth mentioning. Raising the acceptance of Taiwanese to Chinese culture and stuff would benefit the unitation plan of CCP. So we have to find a balance to embrace their culture and people but not fall into the trap of CCP. I believe that people are more aware of the difference between CCP and Chinese people, I also have no idea what's gonna happen next but we'll see.
