When I first heard this song in A Walk to Remember, I didn't realize who the singer was talking to. Now I'm a born again child of God Almighty and the lyrics have such a special meaning to me 💕 Praise God for Switchfoot and their ministry. God bless you all!
Yes, I agree that it's foremost addressed to God first. But I also learned going through life that the message extends to not limiting oneself from a more spiritually rich life by leaning on one's own understanding, alone. There's relieved healing, heightened enlightenment and greater alignment when we let go of the ego and fear, to be humble in vulnerability so to connect with others' souls and experiences.
But starting with God as our forefront guide. Relationship with God first, and then the relationship with oneself and everyone else. Besides A Walk to Remember, Switchfoot also openly calls themselves as a Christian band but not Christian in genre. In turn affirming that their music is greatly influenced by life values learned through God and reflecting onto their relationship with loved ones and everyone else. I wish you blessings and comfort in these times going forward. God bless you 🙏🏻❤

I had this album on tape. I listened to this song as I fell asleep. Had to rewind it. (Yes, youngins, rewind). The sharp plastic clicks of stop and rewind. I'd play it 3 or 4 times before I finally fell asleep.

I used to work for Teen Mania Ministries back in the day. One of my roles was driving the bus from city to city for our "Acquire The Fire" conventions. I stumbled onto this album back in 97 and practically wore this CD out listening to it in the middle of the night driving the team to the next city.
