I liked the guest appearance on this video - how cool! Can't pay for that kind of production value haha. IT is my #2 favorite behind 11/22/63 - I hope you love it too! I'm looking forward to GGK.
Ooooh, GGK's Sarantine Mosaic! One of my favorites of his. He is my favorite living writer, and that duology is remarkable. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it!
I haven’t read GGK’s Sailing to Sarantium, but I would guess the title is likely an allusion to the poem “Sailing to Byzantium” by William Butler Yeats. It’s worth checking out the poem for thematic links, perhaps. I will be starting Peril’s Gate today! Hooray for Bambi, and I hope you escaped from the rain on time!
Oh, how lovely! I'll have to read that poem. I'm excited for our Peril's Gate discussion though it will probably take me a long while to finish the book. 😅 I didn't know Bambi was behind me until editing the video. It was a pleasant surprise! 😁
🏡 I love your outdoor setting so much, so very peaceful. You have noisy insects while for us over here 🇬🇧 it’s the bird sounds that makes up the background effects. I am getting ever more tempted to try Wurts’ “…Light and Shadow” to see how I get on with the prose. Definitely excited for that prospect. And when you held up the Ishiguro book I was reminded that I have had “Never Let Me Go” sat on my shelves since 2011 😱 Basically I’m saying I watch BookTube and want to read all the books you plonk in front of me 😁 But endless TBR, you know how it is…
We have two species of cicadas intersecting this year, so it's super noisy! I love bird sounds and used to hear many of them in the morning when I lived in the southwest U.S. I hope you enjoy whatever book comes up next in your ever-growing TBR! 😁
The Sarantine Mosaic duology is excellent. Not my favorite GGK novels but definitely worth reading. Make sure you read Children of Earth & Sky and A Brightness Long Ago after the duology. They are set in the same shared world and adds to Kay’s near Italian Renaissance world. The Bluest Eye is a very sad book. Heart-wrenching indeed. If you make it through that novel definitely read Sula, Song of Solomon, and Tar Baby. Morrison has been a writer that I’ve admired more than loved. However, Sula is one of the best novels I have ever about the dynamic of female friendship. Happy Reading Joanna!
Excited to read more GGK. I'm currently reading "A Brightness Long Ago" with my GGK buddy-read group and already hooked. I hope to get to The Sarantine Mosaic soon but heard it is best to read back-to-back as one. Looking forward to your thoughts! *cue the deer* 😆 - Cheers 🍻
Good luck with the Fall TBR and enjoy the reading. I don't really follow a TBR anymore but just read whatever bright and shiny new thing grabs my attention or for the mood I am in at the moment. For example, over the past couple of weeks, I have been reading Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series again along with a bit of a dive back into some Agatha Christie books. Who knows what the next few weeks will see me obsess over?😄
The Bluest Eye was the second Morrison that I ever read and despite how sad it was I enjoyed it. I need to read more from her. I'm also glad to hear that you're enjoying Klara and the Sun. When it first came out I mainly saw mixed reception but perhaps that's changed. I've only read Never Let Me Go and The Remains of the Day; both are favorites. P.S. I get deer visitors quite often. They are lovely.
Thank you, Marianne! I've noticed the same thing about the Klara and the Sun reception. I'm okay not starting with Ishiguro's best because I'm hoping to get to all his books eventually. Glad you loved the deer! 😊
A fantastic TBR! Also is that your backyard?? Looks like paradise, and the perfect reading spot! Cant wait to start Wars Of Light and Shadow and Bakker next year. I’m reading my first GGK this month with Lions of Al-Rassan. Can’t wait to hear what you think of IT!
The Lions of Al-Rassan was my first GGK last year, and it is a perfect first GGK! A Song for Arbonne is my favorite, and as a fellow musician, I'm pretty certain you would love it as well. It is my backyard! Thank you! 😊
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on The Bluest Eye! I've only read Beloved from Morrison but I definitely plan to read more from her in the future
I plan on tackling Bakker some time soon. Maybe not this year but hopefully early next year. I am reading Lions of Al-Rassan next month and Sailing to Sarantium will probably be my next GGK read after that. I really want to make time for reading Janny Wurts as well. My TBR needs to stop growing 😭. When I finally get around to reading another King novel it will be Salem's Lot. I am letting the used book gods decide my fate. I will read it when I finally find a nice physical copy for my collection. Looks like you are gonna have a great fall!
Maybe we can align our Sailing to Sarantium reading! Janny Wurts considers The Lions of Al-Rassan one of her favorite fantasy standalone books, by the way. 😊 Salem's Lot is good in how it depicts the town as a character. I enjoyed it, but I also think King has grown a lot as a writer since then. Happy fall reading!
@@JosephReadsBooks Hooray! I know Josh and I are trying to coordinate as well. I've tried with Allen too (he threatened me to wait for him but doesn't reply to my follow-up messages 😂). I'll open a section in the Fireside Discord!
I'm confident Sarantine Mosaic will be a win with you. I think its some of Kay's best character work as well as political intrigue. Great Ordeal is wild to say the least. I've decided I won't be continuing my Wars of Light & Shadow journey until after I'm finished Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings (started Rain Wild Chronicles last week) and that's the only reading places I have. Love the cosy outdoors vibes.
I'm so excited for Sarantine Mosaic and The Great Ordeal! I completely understand focusing on Realm of the Elderlings. I'm sad that I've had to put that series on pause but there are only so many long epic series I can have on my plate at one time. Thank you so much!
Deer! 😃 «Sarantium»! So excited to hear your thoughts (and don’t you worry, of course I have a list on references locked and ready!😆): «Sailing» is my personal favorite of the two (the Prologue is awesome just as short story on its own!), to not spoil too much, it is true that the main character do not sail, but others might! 😉 Hope to get to Dostoevsky in the not too far distant: Have «The Brothers Karamazov» ready on my shelf! This August I will finish three series: Currently reading «To Green Angel Tower» book #3 in the «Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn» Trilogy by Tad Williams (Epic Fantasy), next is «The Thousandfold Thought» book #3 in «The Prince of Nothing» Trilogy by R. Scott Bakker (Epic Dark/Grimdark Fantasy, will definitley be re-visiting your discussion and then watch your «Aspect-Emperor» discussion with Professor Chase!) & finally «Leviathan Wakes» of «The Expanse» series by James S.A. As I have gotten some longtime TBR bog hitters on my Belt this Summer, I plan to be bit more freewheeling this Fall, but I do have on my TBR this Fall: «Lustrum» by Robert Harris (Book #2 in the «Cicero» Trilogy, Historical Fiction about the Roman Statesman), «The Power Broker» by Robert Caro (Investigative Journalism/Political Biography Classic) & «Dreaming the Eagle» by Manda Scott (Book #1 in the «Boudica» series, Historical Fiction about the Celtic Queen’s Rebellion against the Romans). Also some Michael Moorcock: «The Eternal Champion» and his Alt-History Multiverse Steampunk «A Nomad of the Time Streams» Trilogy! On my Fall MBR/Winter TBR List, I have: «Alamut» by Vladimir Bartol (Historical Fiction set during the Crusades about the Hashshashin/Orde of Assassins) «Unfinished Tales» by JRR Tolkien «After Rome»by Morgan Llywelyn (Historical Fiction set in Post-Roman Britain) «Augustus» by John Williams (Historical Fiction)
