  • We install the new gear box on the 60 inch mmm (mid-mount mower) deck 60D. After getting the input shaft and the output pulley in place, only 4 bolts hold the gear box in place.

    Wonderful Presentation. I thought those boxes would last longer. I have a 425 that has a 60 inch mower with 800 hours and I just serviced it last night. I will periodically inspect the mower of my 1025R...

      I hope you have good luck with it, the replacement box I bought is doing tons better than the OEM box. I change gearbox oil every year and this one always drains out extremely clean.
      Have a good one!

    Use Loctite on the little set screws. They will back out and can make it extremely hard to remove the deck from the tractor.

    Would you recommend changing the oil in the gearbox? Or should I just add oil? I was going to go with the John Deere oil keep it factory specifications I bought the tractor used and I’m going over the deck now.

      If you have easy access to it, I would go ahead and remove the gear box. Let it drain real good and refill with your fresh oil.
      That way you'll know what you've got. Then just keep an eye on oil quality as you check it on occasion.

    I cant say thank you enough.Long story short,,,,its Saturday Im doing deck maintenance (60D) and dumped old oil out of gearbox.I looked in manual and nowhere did it indicate oil weight. Of coarse JD stealership is closed.I just happened to have a bottle of 80W90 on my shelf and now I can continue with my deck maintenance thanks to this video and all the comments left by other TH-cam viewers. Thanks again pal,,,,you saved my day.Hot damn,even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍

    good video. i think the use of Amsoil 70W-90 and the failure of the lower pulley bearing on the gearbox is likely coincidental. It appears the 80W90 is more viscous but hard to tell. On my simplicity legacy XL 60 inch deck calls for 85W-90 in its gear box. Could find any around so I ordered on line. The gearbox has 500 hours and other than the oil looked black it seemed fine. An petroleum engineer I am not so if possible I'll try and stick with the stuff Simplicity said. Thanks for sharing...

    Have the same issue with my Cub Cadet/Yanmar SC2400 deck (MM60RSe) gearbox. Gearbox is made by Peerless but only now available through Yanmar for $500 or rebuild bearings and seals for around $95. Nice vid. Really like that drive on deck action. Lot better than man handling. Thx ⚙️🔧🚜

      The drive on deck is awesome! It saves a person so much hassle it would be hard to put a value on it.
      My dad had to buy a deck drive gearbox for his 13 year old Kubota Diesel ZT and it was $750.

    Thanks for the video. Very useful. I also had to replace my gear box as it was leaking oil. The coupler on mine had both set screws backed off and one of them was destroyed. I had a hard time finding the part number for the coupler and the set screws. Finally found them, they are listed in the universal drive shaft assembly. The instructions for the assembly notes that loctite should be applied to the set screws and the coupler needs to have 1/16" clearance to the gear box. Set screw is 22M7072. Coupler is M170762.

    • @pmtips4482
      @pmtips4482  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for those part numbers! When I replaced my gearbox, I noticed that both set screws were tight. I don't think I used loctite on them, I'll clean them with brake clean and loctite them.
      Thanks again, it is appreciated!

      I can't say with any certainty, but I think the lower bearing of output shaft is the weak spot.

    My box went yesterday. Orders another from John Deere this morning. Tried to remove the bolt on the pulley. Can’t break it looses. Know it’s left hand. Will have to wait until get air wrench and see if works. Also the input shaft had one set screw that had backed out and was damaged. The other was not tight. My bottom seal went out and oil spun out and caused bearing failure before new oil was leaking.

    Great video. Got my new gearbox and removed the old from the deck, but can not unscrew the bolt on the pulley. Yes, turning clockwise to loosen but cannot get the bolt to budge using a 18 mm wrench. What else can I try?

    Now he tells me. Was going to town with impact wrench on a puller trying to get that darn thing off. Tried everything. Had to literally cut the old pully off! Now, I'm worried I killed the bearings. Maybe, I'll just order new parts. Seems baby smooth to me though. So, maybe I lucked out.

    • @pmtips4482

      If it feels smooth I would put some good gear oil in it and run it. With sharp blades, she is a cutting beast in big stuff.

    Have you had any problems with wear on the deck that the front stabilizer bar mounts and has the two locks to hold it in place. Mine has deck wear and slack that the two locks won’t keep the bar in place when back off deck. I bought two new locks and made no difference.

    • @pmtips4482
      @pmtips4482  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, not at all. If you are talking about the front bar that just slides into the front hooks (by the axle), mine has an adjustable bolt the entire bar and support arms rest on. That way you can get the height to where it needs to be.
      Good luck!

    • @pmtips4482
      @pmtips4482  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ron, on gearboxes like these, I fill to overflow on the side plug.
      My 48 inch bush hog is the same.
      On the replacement MMM box, it came with a really strong magnet built in the fill plug.
      That kinda impressed me.
      This box is holding up very good. Even the gear oil stays super clean with Lucas 80W-90 going in it, but I evac it out and refill every spring.

      Gerald, it looks like 60D and 54D take the same gear box.
      It's when old part numbers get superseded by new numbers that can be tricky. One online store had the old part number at $664.00, but they also had the new part number at half that price, and both in stock.

    Did you need puller to take pulley off old unit

    • @pmtips4482
      @pmtips4482  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it should come off fairly easy. If it is over 5 years old, I would spray the pulley shaft with PB Blaster or similar product, let sit overnight, then pull it off with a puller or light tapping around the center hub part.
      Thanks for watching!

    I am dissatisfied with the two front deck arms wearing the deck causing the arms to slip out of deck. I purchased two new lock bolt Things and made some bushings to slip over the bolt things to take slack out so when you back off mower the two arms hangers don’t jump out and lodge underneath tractor.
    Any experience with this problem?

      Yes! I had the same issue on my 1023E. I ended up welding brackets on mine up front to permanently mount the front arm. . John Deere actually redesigned the assembly on the newer decks.

    • @BillSpohn

      I had the same thing happen to me. I just found out that I was supporting the mower deck by riding on the deck wheels. That is NOT correct. Deck should hang and wheels are NOT for adjust cut height.
