I really like the fact that you are uploading such long videos compared to other channels, it makes it so much easier to understand everything. Keep it up!
Amazing! I'm doing a 3D course which includes unreal engine, but I keep being frustrating that they keep on focusing on photorealism while never showing methods on how to make stylized/toon looking meshes and foliage. This helps a lot, thank you!
Finally someone who writes down and makes a video about all the steps! As a beginner I have been struggling to find good content that doesn't skip parts just because they think I already know everything. Great work I love the style!!
I had a problem where I kept getting darker blades of grass appearing between the others which looked bad. I worked out that "tangent space normals" needs to be turned off for the normals to work (in the material details>material>advanced) I also had my material set to two sided which caused some darker blades, so I turned that off. You don't notice the grass being one sided to it's fine. Great tutorial. :)
I'm learning unreal as hobby, it was very difficult to make grass. Thank you so much for showing all the process related in detail. please keep uploading you explain so nice and make easy to understand for beginner like me.
"Grass will be black. НУ not black but..." Это так мило, когда проскакивают такие слова 😍 Очень красивые сцены ! Очень восхищаюсь и вдохновляюсь ! Спасибо, что делишься знаниями и опытом !
Guys if anyone is having issues with distortions on your grass color, like small noises, it solves by making your 'wind line size' bigger, way bigger! Also, using levels to make your wind noise map with more contrast, that will solve issues too!
thank u very much for the detailed explanation !!! the best tutorial on TH-cam!! plz can you do a tutorial on how did you set the light and the clouds ❤
Great tutorial Victoria, thank you for taking the time to do this, it's very much appreciated. I have a small issue in that the grass doesn't take on the colour of the landscape, even though I have the RVT setup and assigned in the grass material. It's updating too, as I can see the colour in the rvt colour swatch (I did have to use your trick of sculpting and then flattening again). My project settings have virtual textures turned on and I've restarted. Have you any ideas why the grass might not be adopting the landscape virtual texture? I'm using UE 5.0.3. Thanks again for a great tutorial, the final look is really nice. Interstingly, it works fine with megascans grass assets (it adoptys the colours once I assign the same material to it), but not with the one I created myself in Maya for some reason!
@@SeanForsythTutorials If you ever plan on picking your project back up, try sculpting anywhere on the landscape, then use the flatten tool and start from where you sculpted at and flatten the rest of the landscape so everything is flat again. After that, all you need to do is click set bounds for color and height. I hope this made sense 👍
Hey, I posted a comment and then deleted it because I didn't read the other comments. However, I did solve my issue propper by increasing the contrast in my Wind Noise Texture. Essentially the Values where to similar, and too high so it was always applying a bump to the colour offsetting it from the landscape. Just make it super contrasting to see if that changes anything and then tweak it from there! Hope that helps!
Just throwing this out there but I think the wind-line, while its cool, I cant seem to get it to work in UE5.3. In practice it didnt work, but I understood the concept of what you were getting at with adding a wind-line and I think adding it would definitely add some value to grass. I think the problem is something with the masking setup, or the divide before the mask... if i switch that divide to a multiply I seem to get 'some sorta result' even tho its not remotely like the windline you have. I wonder if that windline references a different texture coordinate?
Absolutely fantastic tutorial. I don’t know if you read the comments but do you have an opinion on mesh based grass vs using alpha cards for grass in UE5 for a video game project?
Love this tutorial! Don't know why, but my color grass don't match with the color of lanscape, but i will try again and maybe find my mistake. Thank you so much, wind noise color is just geniuse part.
My virtual texture for the grass is purple, do you happen to know why that happened? I rechecked everything and I match everything you have in the video but it still looks purple. Basically, the grass is grey with no texture but the wind blow shine is there except it is purple.
If anyone else has an issue in Unreal Engine 5 where you cannot seem to get the RVTs to update: Double check the landscape streaming proxies, make sure that none of them have draw in virtual textures checked (you can select them all at once). Then after being sure that none of them are checked, add in the array elements to draw in virtual textures though the landscape that is like the 'folder' to all the landscapeStreamingProxy things.
Hello Victoria Virtual textures are not created with set bounces. I also deformed the terrain in landscape mode, but no virtual textures were created. "Physical materials required" appears in the viewport finder when sculpting a landscape. Could it be because of this? Are you aware of this issue? Thank you for the good video!!
Hello hello, at 15:15 when I drag my landscape material instance into the landscape, nothing happens. The landscape does not turn black like yours, and I don't see any of my materials in Landscape paint under layers. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, any help is appreciated.
can this work with realistic grass as well? this question is for the other tutorials as well, does the same principle apply and you can make it from stylized to realistic?
Awesome tutorial! Love the style, I was trying it in a sunset time, But the grass gets illuminated a little weird in that light setup, What could be happening?
Optimization happens when you profile your projects specific needs. Its very difficult to say if this would be "optimized enough" as thats entirely subjective to your project. This grass creation process outlined here seems to be relatively inexpensive for my project, and I'm making a FPS/3rd person game. IT really all depends on how much resource you want to use, polygon, texture sizes, UE4 vs UE5, etc.

Thanks for these amazing tutorials! Can you make a "how to create stylized lightning" tutorial later on? I always struggle with shadows and lightning!
Thanks! I will think about creating a lighting tutorial) As I understand, it is a hot topic for many people.
Yes +1 From me too!
For does who has a weird shadow issue, you just need to unplug the "TwoSidedSign" node from the normal map output. (UE5)
