I'm about four years into studying Japanese. I recently started teaching my wife how to read Katakana and Hiragana. At first she couldn't understand what I meant by hiragana is more rounded and katakana is more square, but after a few days of cram and practice she finally sees the difference. I'm so happy
@@theeleventhhour8959 if you have some vocabulary (as in you know what a word means by sound) you can try reading young children books that are solely hiragana.
Katakana is older than Hiragana and was used originally to sound out the Chinese words from China, which is why it is still used for Loan words to this day.
Thought these were rules until I played a game in Japanese that used katakana for particles and endings for some characters just to make it read like the person had an accent.
From what my Japanese teacher told me, women come up with hiragana because they were not allowed to learn to read or write the current alphabet of the time, which I believe was kanji from China. Katakana was invented after hiragana by men.
hiragana is used for grammatical particles and suffixes as well as words but katakana is used for foreign words and onomatopoeia So in general when you encounter a word written in katakana it's either a foreign word or an onomatopoeia And if you see hiragana it could either be a grammatical particle/suffix or a word/part of a word
Oh so thats why i like katakana more.. it's only natural I am currently learning pronounciation but idk what to learn next after mixtures of 2 such as ちや=Cha or the ° and ``
I’ve recently tried learning Japanese, and I want to know, should I focus on only one, or both? Personally, I like katakana more and the characters are easier to write(for me).
all three! hiragana and katakana and you'll pick up more and more kanji as you go along too, they're all used commonly. romanji is fine too, great for learning words and sentences as you fill the rest in. if you're starting with one, i'd pick hiragana.
Unfortunately not all katakana are obvious, some are completely different to the foreign word or have a very vague reason for their name. Sometimes I find myself guessing words 😂
i love japan and the japanes elanguage but the signs are... cancer. i mean first you invented an alphabet... like hiragana... dunno if it was really first but let's just assume it is. and then you think yourself. "hey, why don't i just invent the same alphabet again, just with more corners?" and then, someone had the desire to ruin this language for everybody and said "hey, why don't i just make a painitng of every word i intend on using?" And suddenly you have 9.000 different Letters. How did this happen?! So for everyone who's also frustrated... there are tools out there that can live-translate japanese characters from your camera. you can use those tools. you should use those tools. Japanese is actually an easy language. just like english. so don't be scared and never. never. ever. try to learn german.
You are misinformed. Why blame Japanese for not having words invented overseas? It’s not part of the traditional language. And I don’t know how you think English is an easy language, how Japanese is easier than others, or why you shouldn’t learn German. With the time taken to master Japanese as an English speaker you could learn Italian, Spanish and German in that time.
@@catmerchant8699 you definitely cannot. or let's say the average person cannot. there's an objective complexity in every language that can be quantified. english is one of the easiest language because it almost has no grammar. and japanese is almost the same. there is almost no grammar. only thing japanese has is quite the politeness. which is managable, but making it slightly harder than english. and now german on the other hand... is one of the most difficult languages. because not only has every word a gender attached which is in no way matching the gender you would think like "chair" is male and "sun" is female. but we also have 4 cases (times 2 for singular and plural) that can change words ending. english doesn't have this and japanese also doesn't have this. japanese also doesn't have an idea of gender and there is not even a plural. you just use count-words. like if you want to say i want 5 apples you just say "ringo wo itsutsu kudasai" there is no plural of the word "ringo" and in english you have the plural but you only append an S. in german it's: der Stuhl - die Stühle. but die Sonne - die Sonnen. this is why i'm saying japanese is a relatively(!) easy language and it's rakning among the easiest languages known to me. feel free to correct me. because i'm not a native speaker in japanese yet. but that's my impression as a basic speaker.
@@cxsxnxvx I suppose, I didn't mention English in particular though. Just if it's a loan word from another language I wouldn't know what language. A little beyond my linguistic knowledge
