I just bought a 2011 Sportster 48 with only 811 miles. Driving it back home running 75 mph on the highway it smooth sailed. Best Sportster I have ever owned.
I bought a 2003 sportster back in March for just under 2k and the seller was moving to the east coast. It was dropped on the right side but the damage was just a scrape on the exhaust and the right grip, and everything else looked in fantastic shape and all things considered was a great deal, I serviced the Harley and had it inspected, I purchased several after market parts, the bike is one mean sporty. I'm always looking for deals to possibly flip, but this bike for some reason I kept this one, its just a blast to ride.
Wait? Wait? People do that? I did that my first time ever getting the bike to move. I freaked out and grabbed the front brake and it fell. I was so scared of it but I knew I couldn’t stop. I watched a few videos of getting the bike moving. Clutch friction point and duck walk. I got it to move the second time and I didn’t stop riding it in a parking lot for 2 hours afraid to stop. Took me 3 days to go on the actual road and it was 300 feet to the stop sign and turn. I signed up for the MSF COURSE and using their smaller bike I gained confidence
Nah yeah, it happens, my experience was when I not only went off an embankment, but I had to leave the bike till the next day and came back to discover it was stolen. It took me a week to shake the feeling. But I eventually got another bike, but parking in public took me a few months to get used to that again.
@@Arizona_rider You're in good company. The great Henry Winkler is terrified of motorcycles. You can read all about it. Kudos to you for staying with it.
My wobble at 65+ mph turned out to be the stock Michelin Scorcher tires,at 5500 miles I switched to Michelin Commander II's..omg the difference is amazing ,no more wobbles.
That little clanking noise is should be the chrome exhaust pipe covers, my nephew has same type of Harley with that same noise issue no matter how much we try to adjust it, it keeps coming back.
Yes I drove 2 hrs to look at a bike that I was told was “perfect” with new tires. Get there and it’s all scratched up and lights where busted and tires half gone.
You inspired me to finally take that leap and try to flip my first bike. I bought a 06 1200 sportster for 2500. The same situation happened to me. The guy posted it saying it just had a “fresh oil change” but when I showed up, it had oil all over the bike. He claimed it was from the oil cap not being able to close all the way and it needed a new one. I drove over an hour so I was pretty disappointed he didn’t mention that on the post. But cosmetically the bike was in excellent condition and ran great so I didn’t want to pass it up. I’m waiting on the oil cap to come in and praying there isn’t an oil leak
Hey man are u sure the oil caps no good? I've seen 3 people with sportys say the same thing but they just didn't push down and turn hard enough on the cap.. mine did that and I put some muscle into it and it went down into place
I'm old, short and have a bad lower back with sciatica. Forward controls force me into a hunched over position when I reach for the handlebar and cause extreme pain. Forward controls also give worse handling. However, I can ride my Standard Sportster with mid-controls all day long with no pain during the ride or afterwards. Forwards may look cool to some people but not to me. When I was younger, I had a few bikes with them but I never liked them even before my back problems.
Mids may be better for handling (unless one happens to be tall, then mids on a low cruiser are a nightmare) but that hunched forward is more like a handlebar problem. Either mini-apes or pullback handlebars, anything that allows you to sit with your back straight is usually the fix. The clamshell posture (feet forward, low T-bars far away from you etc) may look cool but you will feel it in your back on prolonged rides no matter how young or old one is. 😅
No deal breakers with that one, for the right price. I personally hate a bike that shakes it's handlebars like a dog trying to "pass" a peach pit, but I am picky like that!
Jon, I'm willing to bet that all it needs to fix the bar wobble is the fork stem nut to be tightened a little. It's a pretty common issue. There adjusted using the fall away method. It's pretty easy and something you could do yourself, just find a video on TH-cam on how to do it. Edit: A link to a great video demonstrating the fall away test and adjustment. Maybe slightly different spec on the Sportster. Can't remember off the top of my head. th-cam.com/video/Q5-adV_SA74/w-d-xo.html
@KAY D I agree. That’s why I stopped watching him. He rarely creates anything originally his, and he posts several times a day. He is all about the money.
I think DDFM channel is not very useful for two reasons. First, the "instruction" he gives is common sense for anyone with - wait for it - common sense. Slow down in traffic, don't go fast around blind corners, always watch your blind spots and the blind spots of others, etc. Duh! Second, the people who are actually going to listen to his "instruction" don't need it, and the people who need his advice, aren't going to change their a-hole ways because DDFM tells them to. Oh, and one last thing. Every time I see some anger-issue richard-head slap someone's car mirror, I want to find them and kick them in the dick. Maybe I am the one with anger issues.
You did better than a lot of us would, especially where you’re trying to make cash on your buys. Good luck on the touch ups. We actually had a 48 come in as a trade that also went down, not sure what it is about folks not replacing the little things like levers, grips, and turn signals. Especially when that’s the only thing that shows signs of a “down” and when the damage on those parts looks light enough where those were probably the only damaged parts. Talking mostly about the 48 we just got, that lever looked trashed in comparison.

spaceflight101 thanks for the reply! I actually changed my mind and went with the Dyna Low Rider. I realized I just liked the look of the 72. Not practical like you mentioned.
The Sportster 48 has 3 MAJOR problems that prevent it from being a practical motorcycle. One, the front wheel/tire is so big that it has a serious negative effect on handling and braking. Two, it has wire spoke wheels with tube type tires, so that WHEN you have a flat (and you will) you're not going anywhere. You will have to call a tow truck, and that could (and probably would) cost you an absolute fortune. Three, the gas tank is so small you have a range of under 100 miles. That is simply ridiculous. I can't help but wonder who came up with the idea for this bike. At least the newer models have tubeless tires. My 2006 1200L solves all those issues. It has a standard size 19" front wheel with a motorcycle sized tire, cast wheels with tubeless tires, and a 4.5 gallon gas tank. But best of all, it has a CARBURETOR. No computer crap to fail and cost a fortune to fix.
It was a bust because after you did a triple lindy off the side of your house onto the bike, the front end didn't reach for the sky all the way to Joshua Tree
Put a thundermax tuner on that thing with a set of V&H short shots and a big sucker air cleaner and then get to us with a real review, your bike is not putting out like it should.I have a 2010 48 with the above mentioned items and my bike would eat that one for lunch and pic up the tab.The thundermax can tune the idle for a real nice potato, potato, potato idle that is a lot more of what it should sound like white waiting at a stoplight.
naa he gave him an opportunity to repost and reduce his asking price a little reflecting on the problems jon spoke about... jon must have offered him -1000 dollars but said he could sell it for -500 if he reposted it.(numbers are made up) the guy decided he'd rather just take the current lowball offer, which sounds like a good deal for jon and the channel.
It seemed like something’s wrong with the front end, could be as simple as a crappy or out of balance tire. But it could also be blown out head bearings or a bent wheel or other costly items... I’d stay away from a flip, wouldn’t want someone to get hurt on it because it’s really a POS and you unknowingly sold it to them. That would suck! I’d only buy it if it was for personal use ( & a good deal) and actually take time & go thru and fix everything correctly.
Thanks for that info James Mike IV! Glad to hear that assessment from a professional source. I love sportsters (have 2) and trying to learn as much as I can to help diagnose problems! 🤙🏻

Good luck, I agree cool bike.
Young man you rock.
It's good to buy when you don't have bike fever and you're willing to walk away.
Sick bike tho, looks and sounds great.Would love to have it :D
LOL REVERSE GAS LIGHT LOL
yeaaahhh I agree this bike STINKS! YEAH!
With that setup...forwards and apes...is this a tall person Sportster?!
How tall is tall? Anyone around 5' 7" ish and over should be perfectly fine with that setup. Which is still short.
You selling it still?
That was dang nice of you esse. Smooth move.
The 2010 48 in my garage isn't a bust...
Cool machine. I would rock the beast for a min. We watched Jackie ride it she didn’t like the bars
Wud u offer him?
Great vid man. I had a 48 myself, they defiantly have to be nice condition looks wise. Other wise you are just buying over priced sportster!
Kinda bummed out that you made a counter offer, he accepted it and then you said no?
naa he gave him an opportunity to repost and reduce his asking price a little reflecting on the problems jon spoke about...
jon must have offered him -1000 dollars but said he could sell it for -500 if he reposted it.(numbers are made up)
the guy decided he'd rather just take the current lowball offer, which sounds like a good deal for jon and the channel.
👆what he said...
Most likely the fork stem nut needs to be tightened. I'm a HD tech and that is a very common issue.
Thanks for that info James Mike IV! Glad to hear that assessment from a professional source. I love sportsters (have 2) and trying to learn as much as I can to help diagnose problems! 🤙🏻
@@aaronczapski6681 not a problem bro. Here's a link to a great video demonstrating how the adjustment is made. I highly recommend you get a service manual if you are going to do repairs and maintenance on your bike.

Great bike man
If you don't want it give it to me. I'll ride the hell out of it
Super nice bike!! Love the channel
Sporties aren't great bikes for flipping unfortunatly. Can always find one cheap because there's a million of them. Always see people asking too much for them. But I do have a 96' 1200 myself I got for $1500 in great shape. At that price I have room to make some money but wouldn't buy a newer one unless it was insanely cheap and left room on the table for a profit.
3k, sold
