An Epic Voyage of West Africa 2013

  • This is a video chronicle of a Lindblad Expeditions/National Geographic voyage of West Africa. 16 countries in 34 days starting in South Africa and ending in Morocco. I shot and edited this video onsite as the trip was happening and finished before the trip ended. I had no control over the locations we went to and what we did. I simply made a video of our guests experience.

I met Ben Lyons in the 90s when we were both members of a New York cruise ship and ocean liner organization. The real Africa is so much more than this touristy and often cliche version of it. If you want to explore Africa, meet the young (or older) intellectuals, go to the nightclubs, restaurants, find someone you know to show you around. I'm tired of the wildlife and markets and villages of Africa. That's just scratching the surface.

I lived in Africa over 15 years, 7 of those were in Guinea, Gambia, Senegal, Namibia, and Morocco. Videos like yours remind me how much I miss it. Thanks Sarah Culler.

Africa, the homeland of my ancestors. The beginning of life and rebirth. Or homeland will always be dear to our hearts even if we are miles away. we shall always remember the land where we were ripped from and one day we will return rejoicing. Never to leave again because we have made it back safe and sound.

not safe for the ship to anchor at Lagos because of pirates, also high risk of kidnapping of tourists for ransom. Because of insurance reasons the ship cannot go to ports deemed high risk and the tour company cannot take tourists to countries that the US State Dept warns are not safe for tourists. Nigeria is nice but not an easy place to organise a ship visit with 150 wealthy Americans who make prime targets for kidnappers.

    RIP everyone everywhere.
In disasters, the body is destroyed, but the soul is released and with us forever.
This will pass folks for all of us. Stay strong and ready to defend yourselves always, if the need arrives.
Listen to Marcus Aurelius for your mental help. Stoicism rocks. All of them.
Celibacy rocks ladies. Close your legs, mouth and sleep on your back alone. Never shack. I married at 27 and 31, and was a virgin. I never shacked, and I married. First hubby was 8 years older and the second husband was 22 years older, and he died at 67 of a heart attack.
We had one daughter, that I raised from conception at age 37.
I worked for my income , and my life never depended on a man. I had plenty platonic friends all over the world, and I was raised to have morals. I thank my great grandparents, who raised me
to care for my body, and do not be a whore, or have a baby out of wedlock.
I am not rich, but I have helped individuals and families in my 81 years here. Please adopt families and put them in a studio apartment away from the disasters around the world. Tents will not do. Stop being GREEDY and STINGY!!!

Well, I'll be darned - Jerry Rawlings himself! Group touring isn't my thing, but I might make an exception for a Nat Geo tour. Just a note for Nat Geo Tours to consider: stop taking tourists to the animal parts market, this encourages poaching and the general tendency to kill everything until it's completely wiped out. Seeing those stacks of primate skulls is a nightmare.

Mama Diane, dearie, Nat Geo Tours are so YESTERDAY, as Africans can do safaris better, because they know who they is, plus y'all loves you some wild exotic animals. And since I mentioned the double-entendre in the room, I need to point out that Mr. Rawlings, many claim, was as wild as any; argue amongst yourself. I needs for people to overstand that Africans can speak for themselves. And Black and African anthropologists and photographers needs to travel to the U.S., Europe and Australia, fo' example, and observe those of a lighter hue, cuz too many think they be mo' better than Africans and Blacks. OK? Humans have to do better, because they might can be better than they've been -- ever the optimist riffin' madly. With due respect...or something like that.

Lagos Nigeria was probably intentionally skipped because it was deemed unsafe for wealthy people (but especially if they kinda 'stand out', if you see what I mean) due to several instances of abductions for ransom and terrorism. Just check Foreign Office and State Department travel advice for the country. Especially back in 2013 when this was filmed.

This is TOURISM, people ... not politics ... these tourists are all old, did their part in their life, most likely working hard all their lives, and NOW sharing some of what they made with the POOR countries they are visiting. They are visiting because they LIKE and SYMPATHIZE with the poor / no matter where, and are trying to help by coming, by visiting, by spending, by giving at least some help and showing they care .... HOW DARE YOU, COMMENTATORS HERE, misinterpret TOURISM in such a stupid and malevolent way. Shame on you.
