That was a concert recorded by our regional tv station WDR (west german tv). I was nine years old then and only saw a part of it on our black and white tv device then (we only received three stations then). But what I now know as "Complainte pour Ste. Catherine" was then one of those moments in childhood when you don't know what you hear but you want to hear it again and are afraid of probably never hearing it again because you have no clue what it is. About twenty years later I got their first records and immidiately recognized it, happily. And at the same time it is scary to see what a deep and life lasting impression just a bit of some special music and singing can leave in a child's memory and soul. Paradise lost, from the beginning to the end.
Very well expressed! I didn't know 'Complainte' or the McGarrigle sisters in 1977, neither was I aware of something like "Rockpalast" then, but I know how you feel. I only got to know this peculiar song much later (through the Dutch Top 2000) . But later in the 1980s I discoverd the Rockpalast concerts (because living close to the German border in the Netherllnds we received not only two Dutch tv-stations, but an aditiional three Germans as well 🙂). These broadcastings always were the creme of the crop. So glad that TH-cam offers the opportunity to see things like this you weren't even aware that you had missed them! 0.
Complainte pour Ste. Catherine is played on Canada's Ici Musique, and when they had a new album out in the early 90s, they got a lot of radio play on CBC. Their ties to Emmy Lou Harris and others shows how music is its own passport.
So pure and so unpretentious and the guy on the harmonica only made it more so... great, great great. Love Kate( may she rest in peace), Anna, and the whole group.
I saw them around this time at Convocation Hall in Toronto. The band was Gerry Conway drums, Pat Donaldon, bass, piano and a hammond played by a then unknown fellow from Quebec, who played excellently. No fiddle or accordion as i recall. Their other sister, of whom we knew nothing, sudden appeared about half way through and sang as sweetly as her sisters. T'was the 70's of course, when gigs were awesome and endless, - rock, folk or jazz.
So true. I wish I had not read the comments. It was 1977, likely recorded off TV on VHS. A world of thanks to whoever recorded it to begin with and even more to whoever uploaded it. A pure treasure from start to finish.
Wow I thought I'd seen all available videos of Kate & Anna. This is a real gift! Thanks for posting. And this version of Mendocino is absolutely beautiful, even with the sound problems and old recording.
Thank the curator at your library! I grew up in a blue-collar industrial hellhole, but someone at the local library had impeccable taste and turned me on to so much amazing music even with the library's limited offerings - and set me on a lifelong path of seeking out great music. I wish I could thank that person because she or he one of the most influential people in my life!
@@tobypuente8841 just stopped at 33:33 and wondering if that was the fiddler's lament... just a guess, but these instincts are well honed after such good musical influences!

How shamefull ... these sound technicians in Germany -- how bad these fine artists were treated. And how gracious the McGarrigles solved it... Yet - the Event was Not washed out from the recording tapes.
Great music. Kate and Anna are amazing. Too bad the sound engineers weren't up to the task. Camera work, direction and lighting were pretty bad too. Can't hide the great performance though.
There's probably some truth in that. There are zillions of virtuosos out there who are "accomplished musicians" but couldn't hold a candle to the purity and soul of these sisters.
@@wjl2601 Did La Baez - with her background - really bash these Sisters...perhaps because of their background? I'll go check these memoires - if you have a title + year, i'd most pleased.

Oh in the seventies we BOUGHT THEIR RECORDS and played them over and over!!!
What an authentic and beautiful concert. How come things became so plastic since these days. Thanks McGarrigles - bless you
I COMPLETELY AGREE!!!

And what exquisite SWINGING a version of "Be my Baby"... the rythm and splendid banjo duel.. how precious!
OMG..how heavenlyyyyy The Sisters did perform my most favorite "Talk to me of Mendocino" -thank you!
Dave Mattacks (drums), and Pat Donaldson (bass) were part of the Fairport Convention family.
So many negative comments. It’s a live performance the minor imperfections are what makes it interesting

While live shows are "fun" for performers and listeners, it shows up just how superbly polished Kate and Anna's studio work was.
Insanely brilliant.

The first song in this concert is prominently featured in the 2017 film, "Lost in Paris." It was touching to hear their two voices, again. 😢

Love these sisters. My sister and I accidentally found them via the public library 20 years ago. A true highlight and good influence 13:17

Their father was, but their mom was pure Québecois! Mixes are always better :)
Definitely a seventies concert. Technology was still in it's infant stages but this one has definitely stood the test of time. It sounds so real.
I love this!
Elles sont adorables et si naturelles.
Great song ....if only I was in a beautiful band like this ❤️
Fantastic
What a joy
I love this concert. Where else can you get good sound malfunctions on magnetic tape these days? Nowhere! They are so sincere. How could they lose?
How amazing it must've been to be there in the audience to witness this concert...And how horrible it must've been to be the sound tech!
Can I smile with u all?

The Richard Thompson Rockpalast recordings from 1983 and 84 suffered from dreadful sound quality as well. I've heard better audience recordings.
"How do you like us as an instrumental group?"
Fucking Kate! 😆
What a shambles
@geert cautereels Please provide a link. I would kill to hear that.
But they got through it. And it still sounded very good. Kate should have taken the male singers mic. and said there. Fixed it.
you mean the issue with the monitor?
they are troupers. They carried on ....the show Must go on!!!!!
Who is the young man, please?
Sorry for the late reply. I've only just discovered this. So great. The young man is Chaim Tannenbaum.

Omg, such a dodgy sound set up. Should NOT happen to such professionals.
Joan Baez wrote in her memoir that she didn't think they were particularly accomplished musicians.

It's proven many times: You don't have to play or sing perfect to make great music.

They made me think of Joan Boaz. Maybe Joan saw them as one of her greatest competitors. 🧐😄
