  • This video is to test Face detection of Sony a7rii while shooting video. What I observed if the face in the scene is well exposed then the camera does a fantastic job as you can see in this video. Even when I went out of the frame as soon as I came back, it locked on to my face immediately.
    Note: This video is a recording of my HDTV, which was connected to a7rii so this is not how the a7rii footage looks like. This is just to show how well Face detection works in this camera.
    Lens used on sony a7rii: Sony 55mm 1.8
    I’ll be doing more tests with sony a7rii so please subscribe :)!

    Thank you for this information ! I am using sony a7r iii with a sigma mc 11 adapter / canon 50mm 1.4 , it works great ! Focus set to AF-C and face detection on !

    my Lock-On AF: Wide mode is not working when shooting video. It says "this operation not available in Manual Exposure" but then I get the same error when changing the shoot mode of video to Program Auto, Apreture Priority or even shutter priority.
    Lock-on AF works only when taking pictures for me not video. Please help.

    Very cool. This feature would be so good for interviews where the subject has that annoying habit of moving around all the time. The Panasonic GH4 has face detection and continuous AF, but not as good as this. Thanks for the test!

      @ankitsinghfilms  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're absolutely right. for an interview this feature is a must have because in interview situation you'll be having a good lighting. And in good light Face detection on a7rii works like a charm.

    This is fantastic. Which lens were you using? I assume something in the 50mm range?

    • @ankitsinghfilms
      @ankitsinghfilms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      :) Absolutely right! was using 55mm 1.8.

      Awesome! Have you tried it with the 16-35 f/4? That is the one I'm realllllly curious about!

    • @ankitsinghfilms
      @ankitsinghfilms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually I don't own 16-35. I recently attended Philip blooms workshop and he was very impressed with 16-35 autofocus performance on A7Rii. And he said he shoots his video with autofocus when using this lens ...had no problems. My 35mm 1.4 which works really well. But 90mm 2.8 struggles sometimes in tricky light situations but that too works very well in most of the situations.

      Thanks for the info! I was so disappointed in the a7s that I switched to a 70d for now. Maybe I'll have to get the a7rII to test it out!

      +Michael Sasser ya definitely try a7rii once. its high iso performance is also quite good in video specially in APS-C mode. So I find it a good all purpose camera.

      it ain't trust me ! Have you received yours ?

    • @formattester6
      @formattester6 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Pierre Belanger damn. sorry to hear that! i bought the A7sII and its FD is pretty good although i know the AR7II is better. i was hoping the FS5 would be at least equal to the A7RII. I still use the original C100. i was pretty hot on the FS5 when announce but lately not so much since FD isn't very good and also wish it had IBIS like the A7SII. I'm going to cool my jets (no rush for 4k) and hope that the C100mk3 will have that kick ass dual pixel FD like the C300mkII.

      +formattester6 Hey ! Lowlight is pretty good on the fs5 though tested iso 10000 and looked really nice !

    Do you know if this function works with any Canon lenses with a Metabones adapter? Or does it have to be native Sony glass?

    • @ankitsinghfilms
      @ankitsinghfilms  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Face detection does work with compatible canon lense with a metabones adapter.

  • @raredreamfootage
    @raredreamfootage 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just did the same test with my A7S and it locks on 90% as accurately as the A7RII. The difference is in the focus drive speed, the A7S drives it slower with no way of adjusting the speed. There is also no AF Duration setting.
    The key to how tightly it locks is in the exposure, a face with more darker shadows will make it tough for the Face Tracking system.

    • @ankitsinghfilms
      @ankitsinghfilms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +raredreamfootage I doubted that A7S would perform as well as a7rii so this is a great news. I will give it a shot. And about the exposure, I completely agree, face needs to be exposed well for face tracking to work well.

    • @raredreamfootage
      @raredreamfootage 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes my A7S performed quite well. The focus rack wasn't as instant as the A7RII but it does look more organic, as if a person were pulling focus.

    can you do a video on how to register the face and also enable the face detection function?

  • @NomadByFate
    @NomadByFate 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    please explain me one thing...you are recording video with the camera aswell right ? which mode ?
    so the camera keep AF and following your face while recording video right ?

    • @ankitsinghfilms
      @ankitsinghfilms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nomad By Fate So on a7rii Focus was AF-C mode and wide focus area with face detection enabled. (Sorry for the late reply, for some reason this comment was marked spam so didn't see it earlier)

    Hey, Im using metabone mark4 with sigma 50 85mm and canon L 1735 but cannot get the auto face detecting while taking a video. Any step by step instruction?

    • @ankitsinghfilms
      @ankitsinghfilms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't use metabones but try this, go to Menu > Custom Settings > AF System and select Phase detection AF. After that choose autofocus mode as AF-C and focus area as wide. And now just enable Face detection from Smile/Face detection option in the menu. Let me know if this works.

      +Ankit Singh hi, so i tried with a7r2 metabone mark4 with signma 50mm and canon L lense 17-35 and both of them only get the facial detected but focus doesnt change. the white circle moves around along with faces but they focus is off...btw your lens, i noticed they are manual focus. and can sony still do auto focus ? my decision is, if the canon doesnt work along, i would rather get sony lenses. lmk what you think. thanks

      +박혜주 No I am using mostly Sony fe lenses. And for this video I used Sony 55mm 1.8.

  • @raredreamfootage

    Can you show what happens if the face has more darker shadows and see if the system can track still?

    What if you have more than one face? Can you select which face you want to have in focus?

    • @ankitsinghfilms
      @ankitsinghfilms  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes there is an option to register multiple faces and have a priority order.

    • @ankitsinghfilms
      @ankitsinghfilms  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Kaitlyn Elizabeth.. You just need to set auto focus mode to AF-C and then enable Face detection from Smile/Face detection option in the menu. Let me know if that doesn't work.
