Very nice to see a motorcycle racing photographer doing reviews, rather than the vloggers that just complain about whether the stats on a camera will suit them. This is a great example of real world review in my opinion and it could be the reason I would move over to Sony.
Oh my god I've been trying to find this exact review for a week now. THANK YOU. As someone interested in moto/sports photography almost ZERO reviews go in depth enough about how the Mk2 handles the speed!
Mathieu, This is one of the best explanations of the the A7rii's focusing and lens options. Thank you for taking the time to research and share the information with the photography community. Superbly done!!!!
I like that this video focuses on specific features of the camera/lenses that many users may be concerned about rather than what features many accept the given cameras excel at. Keep doing that.
Wow! Excellent video. I am considering moving from Canon 5D Mark III to the Sony A7RII and really appreciate the detailed information concerning the focus options and their pros and cons with the various lenses.
GREAT OVERVIEW! Love all your videos, they're really well done, and packed with relevant info. I'm going to check out your more recent videos to see if you've updated this one, perhaps with a focus on the more eccentric street photography lenses, like the Voiglander 40mm; the Leica Summicron; and the older Nikkor manual focus, especially with this new TechArt adapter I've been hearing about. This Sony camera and system seems to have an unlimited potential. The E-mount may be the first "universal" mount for SLR photography. Thanks, again, this is all extremely useful, and helpful information. (BTW love your photos, too.)
+Craig Whipps thanks. I haven't tried the 40mm but you can find some articles with other Voigtlander lenses like the 12mm and the 21mm here: www.mirrorlessons.com/2015/09/22/voigtlander-vm-lenses-sony-a7r-ii-chapter-i/.
Excellent comparison. Thank you. I would only like to comment on your statement that choosing the Canon EF version vs the Sony A-mount version of a given Sigma lens is the same thing. Personally I think that ceteris paribus it is better to opt for the A-mount version compared to the EF version, when they are both available. Because 1) the LA-EA3 is a much cheaper adapter than the metabones and 2) A-mount lenses communicate distance settings to the camera so the IBIS stabilization system works in full 5 axis as with native FE lenses, without need to manually set the focal length, whereas this doesn't happen with the EF version where my understanding is that you only get 3 axis stabilization. And this is of much importance especially for video shooting. A shame that Sigma doesn't produce all the Art Series in A-mount! As a side note, personally I have almost sold all my Canon lenses and I am investing in A mount lenses to use on this camera, as I shoot both video and stills. And this is because, apart from the very limited range and higher price tag of the native Sony FE lenses, their major defect is the ridiculous fly by wire focus, which is unusable for consistent manual focus pulling in video which makes them "photography only" lenses...
+Kostas Petsas I think that the distance settings are also communicated with the EF adapter as long as its support autofocus. I don't have to manually set the focal length when using the Art lenses (EF-mount) for example. Anyway if don't need EF lenses for other cameras, investing in A-mount is not a bad idea. And yes the LA-EA3 adapter is cheaper. P.S.: I think that all the Art series from Sigma is available in A-mount as well.
The Sony A7RII can't track to save it's life and before anyone comments, I own the A7RII and it's the greatest camera I have ever used - except when it comes to tracking. Sony G lenses suffer from focus shifting i.e. the focus acquired when the lens is wide open shifts when the lens closes to a smaller preset aperture. So they "solved" this issue, via a firmware update, by changing the focusing system. It now acquires a basic lock wide open, then closes to the preset aperture, refocuses and then tries to track. Unfortunately at f8 the awesome phase detection AF disables and the camera hunts like you wouldn't believe! I was using a 200mm lens at a fashion show and at under 30 feet the area of focus is less than 3 feet using f8. So to ensure I got the clothing sharp I set the aperture at f8 and my lens hunted and missed the focus time and time again! Remember, the models were walking at less than 5mph and it could even track that speed. I switched to my other telephotos, all top lenses and it happened with each and every one of them. Sony are aware of the problem and have been for over a year since they have been inundated with compaints about this. The majority of owners have requested a firmware update allowing a choice of focusing either wide open or closed - and they've done nothing. Don't believe me, try it and see what happens or if you haven't the time go on the net and look it up, you'll find lots of complaints on the subject. So if you want an awesome camera for motionless subjects get the A7RII but if you shoot subjects that move, forget it and buy a DSLR. One last thought... I was considering buying the new A9 and then I realised if Sony have wrecked the A7RII with this via the firmware what's to stop them doing it with the A9? Be wary buying either of them. In the meantime I and many thousands of others are stuck with a camera that's fine as long as what we shoot is basically dead and not moving until Sony get there finger out and fix the problem. One unhappy A7RII owner...
I love your reviews. Looking at this one and the Olympus OMD EM1 mkII review you did, which one would you recommend for bird photography. Keeping 8n mind weight with lens, image stability, final cropping for detailed pictures? Or would you chose a completely different camera for hand held birding?
Good review, in my opinion mirrorless systems are still not there for sports or wildlife unless you use native lenses. All the adopters and non E mount lenses shown in this video have AF speed issue
If I were to get the LAEA3 with Tamron 15-30mm F2.8 for my A7Rii, will it be able to keep a face in focus while the person moves when doing a video? Or does that only work with native lenses?
+shaolin95 in my experience the AF is slower with A-mount lenses in comparison to the native E-mount lenses. I guess it depends how fast the person is moving and at what distance from you.
+George Stone Thanks. On our website www.mirrorlessons.com/ you can find many articles on the A7 series. And if you have other questions, feel free to ask.
Still rocking that a7rii that does the job fine in photo. However I have a question for you: what is the best lens performance in terms of af to use on it? I'm mainly using the sigma 35mm1.4 v1 but seems to give random results, sometimes catches the focus perfectly sometimes completely misses the target. Best video on the a7rii I've seen so far, eveything one needs to know🤝
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons yes with the old af taken from dslr's. In video you have that smooth transition, and doesn't perform that bad however in photo that's another story. I know the a7rii has an old af so I was wondering what lens performs best with it. Thinking the 55mm1.8 maybe?
Is the LA-EA3 better overall for A mount lenses vs. Metabones adapter? Also, when is the LA-EA4 used over the LA-EA3? I"m guessing certain lenses that don't have autofocus motors built into the lens, like older lens systems that are only manual focus. Thanks!
+Tom Rosencrantz I didn't notice a particular difference between the LA-EA3 and the Metabones. Actually I think that the latter can do better also because of the firmware updates. The LA-EA3 didn't impress too much to be honest. With the A7r II, you need the LA-EA4 only with old A-mount lenses that lack the SSM motor.
Amazing video! I would like to buy the tamrom 70-200 2.8 vc, with the a7rII, would you recomend to buy the laea-3 adapter and go for the a-mount lens, or buy the methabones mkIV and go for the canon mount?
+Cesar Harretche I haven't tried the Tamron lens so I am not really sure what to advise you. However this photographer seems to use the Tamron 70-200mm VC on the A7r II with the LA-EA3 successfully. On his Facebook page he also shared some sports picture taken with that combo. Perhaps you can ask him for some advice directly: facebook.com/JaydeAlemanPhotography/
Good informative video Mathieu. I have a Sony A7R, and to re-centre the flexible spot I simply press the C3 (litter can) button. Presumably you can do the same with he Sony A7Rii.
I discovered that on the Sony A7Rii, which I now own, you re-center the flexible spot by simply pressing the C4/delete button. Can I ask you Mathieu, which 'lock on' focus area setting (center, wide, zone, flexible spot, expand flexible spot) have you found to be the most reliable for tracking, and keeping focus on, a moving subject?
Using long A-Mount sigma or Tamron telephoto lens will not focus properly using the LA-EA3 but work with the LA-EA4 but the focus is noticeably slower than using native e-mount glass
+nolaPIC Yes the A7r II is definitely better for stills but also video. You can see some examples here: www.mirrorlessons.com/2015/11/06/sony-a7r-ii-vs-a7s-ii/
great video. I find adapted lenses a great option for a standard zoom considering the poor reviews the FE 24-70/4 OSS always gets. +Mathieu is that why you use the 24-105 art sigma lens?
+Greg Thurtle The 24-105 Art was loaned to me from Sigma UK. It is a nice alternative and the IQ is excellent in my opinion and it has more reach at the telephoto end. However it is heavier (880g vs 426g) and longer in size with the adapter in the middle.
+Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) cool. I look forward to giving it a go. Not that impressed with the Canon 24-70 4 is. You tried the sigma 24-35mm? It's stunning
+Greg Thurtle I heard lots of good things about the 24-35 but that could be a little bit too large for the A7r II ergonomics. I am looking forward to try the new 20mm 1.4 Art. That could be a killer lens for astro photography.
Great video! For me it just shows the limitations of the A7 series. While one can fiddle with adapted lenses as a hobby photographer I cannot imagine doing serious work with them where time is limited and reliability is required.
+Tamas Varga I think it depends on what kind of work but in general I consider the use of adapted lenses as an extra. It can be a nice addition for certain applications but an adapter is not always 100% reliable.
+Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) I agree and I appreciate the reviews like this when you point out the shortcomings of each adapters. Seeing this I know the A7 series is not for me yet it's better to wait until there is a wider range of native lens selection - but of course it's already perfect for many.
I am getting older (almost 80!) and am shooting with the Sony A6400 and A6500 both of which that I love. I am selling my full frame Canon DSLR gear. Since I have and do occasionally use the Canon 6D Mark-2, I would like to get a full frame Sony. My reason for using a full frame camera is not necessarily for any added quality but primarily to increase the focal range versatility of my lenses. As an example, I love both the Sony 85mm f/1.8 and Sony 70-200mm f/4 lenses for shooing female models... With the these lenses, the effective focal length is, of course, 85mm and 70-200mm on a full frame camera but increases to 127.5mm and 105-300mm respectively. I don't really want to invest a large amount of money into a full frame camera and I am seriously considering buying an A7Rii as my full frame model. I don't shoot video and can use my APSC cameras for action. Most of the subject matter will be models, landscapes and still life with native Sony lenses. A used A7ii is about half the price of a new A7iii (about $1,000 USD as opposed to $about $2,000 USD).
with the sequence of the runner...Are you keeping the subject on the AF points yourself? Or is the camera tracking the subject and following the runner moving the AF point from right to left automatically?
I usually keep the central point or the flexible large point and track the runner by keeping it at the centre of my frame. You can use Zone AF and let the camera choose the AF point automatically but I don't find it necessary for runners but for more difficult subjects like a bird in flight or a motorbike.
hi mathieu , i have the same set up as you (sigma f4 24-105mm , sigma sport 150-600mm ) but i cant get the tracking focus to work nor can i access the af micro adj with both lens ................ both the metabones and A7Sii have the latest firmwire , i had the same issue before i updated them , am i just being thick or is there a problem with the metabones ??
+8ballsblack the A7s II doesn't have phase detection AF so it will be much slower with the Metabone. The AF micro adj. are only for Sony A-mount lenses and the LA-EA2 and LA-EA4 adapters.
I just bought the A7RII and I come from Canon. I have the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 optical stabilizer, and was wondering what you meant by it not working? Do you think Metabones/Sony will come with an update to fix the issue you so briefly mentioned?
+chaugan it didn't lock focus at all when I tried it with the Metabones mark IV. Since there has been a new firmware for the adapter (version 1.8) but I didn't have a chance to test it again.
+Qwadis Kiskis it's not available yet, and I would advise to wait for some reviews online to make sure the adapter works fine. Hopefully I will be able to test it soon.
+Ryan Reyes there is less to say about the a7s II because without phase detection it doesn't have the same capabilities with A and EF mount lenses. Also the performance are not as good as with the A7r II. You can see a quick comparison on my A7r II vs A7s II video here: th-cam.com/video/h-aJby2XzX8/w-d-xo.html
Great review! I remember watching a video where someone uses a Canon lens with metabones and the A7rII detects the EYE ? or am I wrong and I was dreaming?
+ViralSocials maybe they were using the flexible spot small and the camera used 1 phase point only on the eye. I tried with both A and EF-mount lenses and every time I try to activate Eye-AF the camera says that the lens is not compatible :)
Hi Mathieu, This a very detailed and interesting video, thank you. Could you give me your opinion on the following, please? I have a Canon 5D Mark II with the following lenses: EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM, EF17-40mm f/4L USM and EF85mm f/1.8 USM. I intend to change my camera and reading articles and watching videos on Canon cameras I am tempted to go with the Sony A7r II instead of Canon 5D Mark III and IV or Canon 5DS / 5DSR. Do you think it could be a good choice? BTW I shoot a lot of landscape and night, I do also love street photography (people, buildings, ...). I also do (less than than the previous ones) concert and action photography. Anyway , thanks in advance for you answer!
Hi Mathieu, Thank you for answering. If I switch: the idea is that I can first use my Canon lenses and then, over time, purchase native lenses. Cheers.
Even with the best adaptor, the AF won't be as fast as with your 5D mark II especially for action. The best thing probably would be to start using the A7r II along with your 5D II so that you can see how it behaves and you have your Canon body to back you up.
Maybe I can first try to see if I can loan a A7r II body even if it is with a native lens and see if I love playing around with it. Anyway thank you again for your time and keep on the good videos. Cheers, Lilian
I forgot....One last questions! I understood that the AF is working Canon lenses manufactured after 2006. Ok but even if the AF does not work with a Canon lens, you can still use MF right?
Wonderful vide thanks , do you guys think Sigma 70-200 f 2.8 A mount works with LA_EA3 on Sony A7rII ? is there anyone can answer that , I appreciate that.
+Arsalan uljamil you can get some slight misfocus behaviours after 400mm but overall I find it to be quite good. I don't know if the Sport version is better.
Hi i just bought an a7r2 & I found a 16 35 f2.8 & 70 200 f2.8 with x2 teleconverter both ssm 2 with a good price . 4000 usd Should i buy those lenses ? will they work without adapters ? I have a sigma 24 105 art with EA3 adapter & the focus is bad i use it manualy for landscapes ...
+Attallah Hichem I guess you are referring to the Sony 16-35 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 a-mount lenses. You will need the Sony LA-EA3 adapter to use those lenses. They are bulky and heavy so you could find the balance uncomfortable with the A7r II. I haven't tried those two lenses personally so I can't comment on the performance.
+Attallah Hichem I see. I am confident that they will work, but the AF might not be fast in all situations, especially when tracking very fast subjects. Are those two lenses version II or I?
It still is a good choice today for image quality mainly, the 42MP sensor is a very good one. The A7 III will give you a faster and more reliable autofocus, a better body design, a better battery and a more capable image processor.
The A7 III is better at high ISO, dynamic range is pretty much the same. The R2 has an advantage with sharpness and fine details because of the higher megapixel and lack of AA filter.
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons Thank You very much! What will You choose? Photography is my hobby I don't earn money on it. I shot everything. Take picture on holidays, family events, portrets, landscape, astrophotography, makro photography and wild nature like birds. I use Raw Therapy. Nowadays I use old Sony a37 and autofocus and quality is not good for me.
Where are you from? France? I'm in Quebec here but your accent sounds more European than mine speaking English =D. (I'm not criticizing your accent at all, just curious)
The Fotodiox Pro Canon-Sony adapter is very good also and wayyy cheaper (170$CAD). I tested it with a Canon 24-70mm F2.8 I and it worked like a champ. Cheaper solution for a quarter of the price ;)
The video's content was very helpful and educative, but many times it's really difficult to understand what's your saying. Not only the accent, but also the voice sounds a little....small? I think. Not quite usefull, show video, how af works with low light conditions and light lenses. Then i will see how fast/slow and accurate it works. p.s sorry for bad english
errr...that AF continous shot of cyclist is out of focus.... Too many shots out of focus. You should get regular DSLR to do a side by side comparision of cyclist coming at you. Then you get a better feel of what is possible.

Both the 85mm and 70-200mm lenses have a focus hold button which I can reprogram for Eye-AF...
Great video, thanks. Do you know if the sony 24 240mm or the 70 400mm I, which one is sharper on a7r2?
The 70-400mm. I wasn't too impressed by the 24-240mm.
Thanks a lot
I will start to find a good second hand 70 400mm I on ebay.
Matieu what camera did you use to shoot your video?
+Al Gardner we used the Panasonic GX8.
with the sequence of the runner...Are you keeping the subject on the AF points yourself? Or is the camera tracking the subject and following the runner moving the AF point from right to left automatically?
I usually keep the central point or the flexible large point and track the runner by keeping it at the centre of my frame. You can use Zone AF and let the camera choose the AF point automatically but I don't find it necessary for runners but for more difficult subjects like a bird in flight or a motorbike.
Mathieu Gasquet thank you very much!
Awesome review!
+Al Gardner thanks!
hi mathieu , i have the same set up as you (sigma f4 24-105mm , sigma sport 150-600mm ) but i cant get the tracking focus to work nor can i access the af micro adj with both lens ................ both the metabones and A7Sii have the latest firmwire , i had the same issue before i updated them , am i just being thick or is there a problem with the metabones ??
+8ballsblack ps just saw your reviewing the A7Rii but im guessing they are basicly the same cam
+8ballsblack the A7s II doesn't have phase detection AF so it will be much slower with the Metabone. The AF micro adj. are only for Sony A-mount lenses and the LA-EA2 and LA-EA4 adapters.
Thank you! I'll just carry on pulling focus
Thank you this video was extremely helpful!
You can more information about Sigma 150-600 f5-6.3c with Fotodiox through EF adapter? I want to buy it? .thanks :)
+Qwadis Kiskis The Fotodiox pro has too many issues with that lens. Wait for some Sigma MC-11 reviews, that could work better.
+Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) Yes I know about it. when to exit sigma mc-11? I saw www.jessops.com can buy?
+Qwadis Kiskis it's not available yet, and I would advise to wait for some reviews online to make sure the adapter works fine. Hopefully I will be able to test it soon.
so I think so :)Thanks Mathieu
Thanks for your great video!
Great video! Can you do the same test on the a7sII?
+Ryan Reyes there is less to say about the a7s II because without phase detection it doesn't have the same capabilities with A and EF mount lenses. Also the performance are not as good as with the A7r II. You can see a quick comparison on my A7r II vs A7s II video here: th-cam.com/video/h-aJby2XzX8/w-d-xo.html
Sony will release a firmware update 2.0 for the a7II that will enable raw 14-bit and 117 point phase detection, can you look into that. thanks
+Ryan Reyes I'll do my best ;)
THX a bunch, mate! Very, very helpful indeed!
Great review! I remember watching a video where someone uses a Canon lens with metabones and the A7rII detects the EYE ? or am I wrong and I was dreaming?
+ViralSocials maybe they were using the flexible spot small and the camera used 1 phase point only on the eye. I tried with both A and EF-mount lenses and every time I try to activate Eye-AF the camera says that the lens is not compatible :)
very good review. thank you
Hello, can you use sony a mount lens on canon eos r ?
No, I don't think there are any adapter available.
Hi Mathieu,
This a very detailed and interesting video, thank you.
Hi Lilian, do you plan to do a complete switch (replace your Canon lenses too) or to use the A7r II with Canon lenses via an adapter?
Hi Mathieu,
Thank you for answering.
Cheers,
Lilian
I forgot....One last questions!
I understood that the AF is working Canon lenses manufactured after 2006. Ok but even if the AF does not work with a Canon lens, you can still use MF right?
Will the 5 axis work with this adapter as well? Currently, Metabones only support 3 axis. Thanks
+Aj Ramirez Which adapter? Sony LA-EA3?
+Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) the sigma m-11
Not sure yet but hopefully I will be able to test a final working sample soon ;)
+Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) DO you know when it will released? thanks
+Aj Ramirez should be in April but don't know when exactly.
Wonderful vide thanks , do you guys think Sigma 70-200 f 2.8 A mount works with LA_EA3 on Sony A7rII ? is there anyone can answer that , I appreciate that.
Does the Sigma 150-600 focus all the way at 600mm without any issue?
+Arsalan uljamil you can get some slight misfocus behaviours after 400mm but overall I find it to be quite good. I don't know if the Sport version is better.
Hi i just bought an a7r2 & I found a 16 35 f2.8 & 70 200 f2.8 with x2 teleconverter both ssm 2 with a good price . 4000 usd
Should i buy those lenses ? will they work without adapters ?
I have a sigma 24 105 art with EA3 adapter & the focus is bad i use it manualy for landscapes ...
+Attallah Hichem I guess you are referring to the Sony 16-35 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 a-mount lenses. You will need the Sony LA-EA3 adapter to use those lenses. They are bulky and heavy so you could find the balance uncomfortable with the A7r II. I haven't tried those two lenses personally so I can't comment on the performance.
thanks for answering me
I already have the LA-EA3 but to test them I should travel for 2000 km :(
+Attallah Hichem I see. I am confident that they will work, but the AF might not be fast in all situations, especially when tracking very fast subjects. Are those two lenses version II or I?
Mathieu Gasquet
version II SSM II the last version
+Attallah Hichem Ok, well the version II should be faster so that's a good point.
Is it good choice in 2022? I would like to buy used one. Maybe a7 ii od a7 iii is better?
It still is a good choice today for image quality mainly, the 42MP sensor is a very good one. The A7 III will give you a faster and more reliable autofocus, a better body design, a better battery and a more capable image processor.
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons Is the image quality in a7iii worst than in a7rii?
The A7 III is better at high ISO, dynamic range is pretty much the same. The R2 has an advantage with sharpness and fine details because of the higher megapixel and lack of AA filter.
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons Thank You very much! What will You choose? Photography is my hobby I don't earn money on it. I shot everything. Take picture on holidays, family events, portrets, landscape, astrophotography, makro photography and wild nature like birds. I use Raw Therapy. Nowadays I use old Sony a37 and autofocus and quality is not good for me.
great video !
Where are you from? France? I'm in Quebec here but your accent sounds more European than mine speaking English =D. (I'm not criticizing your accent at all, just curious)
+DilPower Yes I am half French, half Italian.
Thank you :)
this guy is a genius.
The Fotodiox Pro Canon-Sony adapter is very good also and wayyy cheaper (170$CAD). I tested it with a Canon 24-70mm F2.8 I and it worked like a champ. Cheaper solution for a quarter of the price ;)
+MaximumDiver I used the Fotodiox Pro as well but it doesn't work well with every lens.
Non pas toutes les lentilles, mais bon ca marchait bien avec ma 24-70mm :)
MaximumDiver which camera do you have? Sony a7r2?
Nice cam
Сони, выпустив эту камеру, опередила всех еще лет на 100.
+Savva Morozof почему не на 1000? Чего уж там.
The video's content was very helpful and educative, but many times it's really difficult to understand what's your saying. Not only the accent, but also the voice sounds a little....small? I think. Basically, I need to really focus to the video if I want to listen what your saying. and most of the time i watch youtube, I normally relax.
+1Jean K. Well, since I also spend a lot of time answering every question on my youtube channel, why you don't just tell me what you didn't understand? ;)
Not quite usefull, show video, how af works with low light conditions and light lenses. Then i will see how fast/slow and accurate it works.
p.s sorry for bad english
555!!!
errr...that AF continous shot of cyclist is
out of focus....
Too many shots out of focus. You should get regular DSLR to do a side by side comparision of cyclist coming at you.
Then you get a better feel of what is possible.
Just get a DSLR :-)
+justin holding naah, this is more fun :D
how does DSLR do when they HAVE TO USE AN ADAPTER?
