That drummer was lit. Stevie surrounded himself with top notch musicians with as much passion for playing as he had. SRV is one of the best guitar players we have ever known.
He literally to I believe, was sent to this earth, to experience, pain,& joy, recognise, his maker above, pleading for his help, to get him back on the right path to happiness..now we still love him, for his wonderful gift, playing through his guitar, how he ,, literally felt..I love his music, his raw hard hitting, talent..it speaks words to me, it's like he is the preacher, preaching the word thru his , wonderful guitar, skill set..he plays what he feels, I feel it personally, happiness, sadness, life in general, good, or bad, he was ever so humble, to..a gentle giant, who, left an amazing legacy, to enjoy, even today , All those years, later, when he left us..God bless him, I'm sure he is with him, thankyou, so very much..🙏❤️
It shows how good he was that he broke a string at the end and had to improvise in a split second, *while the guitar was behind his back*. If you know the ending of the song, you catch it, but it does nothing to take away from it whatsoever. He could do endless improvisation in the same octave and never mess up. He was truly one with his instrument.
Trivia....this was filmed at Starwood Amphitheater in Nashville Tennessee around 1987. Mr. Vaughn was one of the guest on Charlie Daniel's "Volunteer Jam" held every year in the eighties. Unfortunately, along with Stevie, Charlie Daniel's and Starwood are both gone. Mr.Daniels died earlier this year and Starwood was demolished in the early 2000's to make way for a strip mall that never happened. Nothing left but the Starwood parking lot.
SRV is one of my favorite guitarists of all time. Thanks for featuring him on your channel. Fun fact: His drummer is now drumming with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, another blues ace.
He basically used power cables for guitar strings. Extremely heavy gauge. That is one of the ways he was able to get that tone. He still managed to manhandle those strings, too.
This is my favorite version of this song by the GOAT. He never plays a song the same way twice. I saw him playing guitar while shaking hands with fans.
Saw stevey 5 times live ad this was the last time I saw him:-/ it was at the Pine Knob Music Theater in Clarkston, Michigan. What a number morning:(( Happy to see over night!
Definitely one of the top 5 guitarists of all time. I saw him live twice, the second time just weeks before he died. What a terrible loss. The Blues almost died with him.
The insane thing about playing behind his back, is that because he unclips his strap, his guitar is no longer hanging across the back of his shoulder so he’s holding the guitar and playing those massive 13 gauge strings. I think that’s why when he slings the guitar back in front of him, that he plays it on his hip for a bit of a rest. Insanely talented 💪🏼❤️
You've surely heard the story of Clapton picking up Stevies guitar and not being able to play it. He looks over and Stevie is just ripping it on Eric's guitar. Stevie must've hand incredible hand and wrist strength.
Guys I'm a huge SRV fan but somehow haven't seen this performance before. Thanks for this! Be sure you check out a few docs out there on his life and death.
Hey it's the 77 year old grandma, like I have said before Stevie was an expert at improvising, you can find duplicate song video's of all his songs, and each time each one is different, his band I give much credit to, as they were able to keep up with him, once I saw him break a string on his guitar, and change guitars in mid performance with out the band orhelicopter
One of my dad’s cousins used to go on and on about these Live Volunteer concerts. If my math works out I believe this one is from the late 80s since that’s clearly the Starwood he’s playing in and SRV dies in 1990, but Charlie Daniels has thrown those things ever since the early 70s.
🤠His brother, Jimmie Lee, said Stevie never played a song the same way ONCE, much less TWICE! When asked about his playing style, Stevie said, "I play like I'm breaking out of prison!" 👍🎸♥🎸♥🎸♥
@John English. That's perhaps one of the most impressive things about his playing. He was improvising and just making it up about 95% of the time, and yet it always sounded good AND still fit the song. People usually list him or Jimi Hendrix as the greatest guitarist ever. Both were amazing and played different styles of music, but if I was forced to pick which one I think had more pure and raw talent, I would have to say SRV (although Jimi Hendrix was absolutely amazing!). Have a good one.
@@joshuaburba2905 🤠Thank you, Joshua! I agree 100% with everything you said. People always want to compare the two, and there are many similarities since Stevie idolized Jimi, but they had VERY different playing styles. I love them both, too, but Stevie will always be the greatest in my heart♥. 🎸🎸🎸
@@johnenglish1955 My pleasure sir, and well said yourself. Definitely VERY different styles, you're right about that. Jimi was definitely going for a rockier, heavier vibe (especially for those times), while Stevie was all about the blues. Thanks for the response.
If Stevie was still alive he'd probably be doing something even more insane by now. Maybe playing guitar with his feet. I still remember seeing the news that he had died 😭
Fun fact my uncles grew up with Stevie and his brother Jimmie and my mom actually went on a date with Stevie and I was actually was named after him. He and dime are the only two celebrities that I actually cried when they passed
As I expressed in your Gary Moore reaction, SRV and Gary are not guitar players.... they are soul conduits from wherever this stuff comes from beyond and brings it to us so we can experience this greatness !!! Great stuff guys !!! I cried on the day in August - will never forget the feeling of loss in not being able to experience him live and to not see how much greatness he would’ve been later in life and shared w us !!!
Clapton said of him, he's the only guitarist he ever heard, that the music continuously flows from him. He doesn't have to think search react wait guess, the notes chords sounds just never stop coming.
Hola Wolf , gran reacción de Steve Ray vaughan gran guitarrista dentro de mis favoritos junto a Steve Vai , John Petrucci , Saludos desde Chile , God bless you .
Stevie was a FREAKING WIZARD!!! I saw a great interview back in the day where he was asked where does he get his clothes....Stevie; "Mostly truck stops."
Hadn't seen this one until just now. 1. Behind the back--check 2. one handed---check 3. broken string--check 4. bounce the guitar on the floor---check 5. Sound epic---check. GOAT FOR SURE
This was at a Charlie Daniel's benefit concert with Lynyrd Skynyrd so you had 2 bands standing on side stage watching this stage be burned to the ground. Charlie said Stevie was his favorite to watch live because you never knew what he was going to do. Amen
That was Christopher Cross's guitar that SRV uses. It as an old, beat-up trade-in that he got from a guitar shop and rebuilt/customized. SRV said it felt right, which helped him do many of the things he did with which he couldn't really with other guitars.
I believe the guitar thing at the end of the video was a tribute to Jimmy Hendrix. It was a Jimmy Hendrix song originally or at least a cover Jimmy did. At a concert Hendrix lit his guitar on fire so I believe that was Stevie paying tribute.
you gotta check the sound track video.....he walks out in a floor length leopard coat...straps on the strat...lites a cigarette and rips thru like 3 songs....better than most other bands concerts!!
Chris Layton & Tommy Shannon ( Drummer & Bass player ) also known as Double Trouble !!! Hat off to them also for what they do !! RIP Stevie Ray Vaughan
All I Can say is if Jimi (Hendrix) was still Alive he's be happy with SRV's cover and he plays a lot like Jimi, he's almost like his clone in playing style & passion he shines thru his guitar. I've been playing over 40 years and I'm still not even 1/2 as good as he is.
Literally just commented on your other video on watching Voodoo Child! LOL Also, Stevie Ray hated the how he sang, never understood why people liked his voice...funny isn't it, how we tear ourselves down?
Also Check out his “look at little sister” I believe it was capitol theater performance but it is the best guitar transition you will ever see after breaking a guitar string
Yep that's the one. Him and his long time guitar tech Rene Martinez makes changing out a guitar in the middle of the song, without losing a beat, like walking down a street. It is amazing to watch.
Fun fact about Stevie Ray Vaughns foot pedal...It belonged to Jimmy Hendrix !!! Steve asked His Dad if he could borrow it to do this song with...Record the song and his Dad gave it to Stevie!!!!
NOBODY....could do this song and even come close to doing it justice except Stevie F...ing Ray 😎😌🙏🏼😇 I have often wondered if when SRV was born, a bit of Jimi Hendrix’ soul was passed on. For real.🤔
There's a video of him playing Life Without You. He's playing with his teeth and loses one but keeps going. You can read his lips when he tells someone during the song.
In an interview, his unique fashion was brought up and the question was asked “where do you get most of your clothes”? Stevie shrugged his shoulders and said “truck stops”
You can really hear the power of those cables he used as strings. 'Course the guitar was fueled by SRV, so there's that, too. A legend cut down way too soon.
When you have guys like BB King and Eric Clapton calling you the greatest guitarist ever that’s saying something, when you get a chance you should check out “life with out you” and “Texas Flood” also there is a video of a sound check by Stevie he looks like he just rolled out of bed but he is instantly on it it’s truly amazing. Also Stevies live performances are where it’s at.
Stevie Ray's guitar was an extension of his heart and soul.
That drummer was lit. Stevie surrounded himself with top notch musicians with as much passion for playing as he had. SRV is one of the best guitar players we have ever known.
Chris Leyton lol he’s a man worth knowing his name

My GOAT Texas Blues guitarist! His solos are so technical yet so soulful... IMO, that is where he supersedes a lot of other great guitarists.
Yes, the soul he emits with his guitar!
Listen to Mary had a little lamb from Austin City Limits 1989
SRV was a true gift from god….still remember the horrible news of his plane crash back in the summer of my freshman year of HS…my father loved him!
