One night my dad called me into his and my moms room. He was sitting on the edge of the bed and had on Austin City Limits, SRV was the concert that night. He told me I needed to sit down and watch this with him. It absolutely blew my mind and was an important moment in the development of my musical taste. Its one of my favorite memories with my Dad, RIP Dad.
On a Sunday afternoon in 1980, Iwas channel surfing, and watched him do this on ACL. My mouth flew open, and I couldn't breathe. My dad came in, and asked what was wrong. I said I have never seen or heard anything like this. I saw SRV 3 times live, the last one was 2 weeks before he died. Your dad was right. in my mind, the greatest of all.
Stevie Ray Vaughan was awesome. He went to Stockard Jr. High as I did then on to Kimball High School. I attended his Funeral at Laurel Land Cemetary in Oak Cliff in Dallas where he and I are from. Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Brown and Stevie Wonder were there. I'm so glad I went. Wish there had been no funeral and he was still playing.
I was fortunate enough to have my wife buy tickets to his concert at the Gorge Amphitheater for my 35th birthday. This was a month before he died. So grateful to have seen him live before he passed.
SRV is definitely a rabbit hole to go down. They say the spring rains here in Texas is her crying for her lost sons. The years when it floods are when she has been listening to Stevie on the wind.
Yeah, very crowded top, depending on personal chemistry and style one likes. But SRV is def. at the very very top if we go by just pure skill and sound
I have come to the opinion that trying to come up with hard ratings list is corrosive to actually enjoying sh*. So I'll just say they're in the top range or otherwise... no need to get picky.
@@Songfugel I agree. Stevie is my personal favourite, but Eddie Van Halen also had some tremendous skill and helped evolve guitar playing - just like SVR. He doesn't get the recognition he deserves, imo.
Your next experience should be "Texas Flood" performed at el Mocambo, followed by "Little Wing" at the same venue, then "Life Without You" performed at the Capitol Theatre. If you study him, he played with very heavy gauge strings and had them lifted high so that he could get the sound he was looking for. He was also "musically illiterate" as he could not read a lick of music. He was truly special.
Had the great fortune to see him play in ’89, only a year before he died in a helicopter crash @ the age of 35, still not completely over it. Amazing, one-of-a-kind guitarist. RIP SRV.
I agree little wing live at El Mochambo is the acid test the Benchmark that guitarists have to reach I seriously don,r think any will surpass this performance
I was fortunate enough to have seen SRV seven times before his untimely passing. This Austin City Limits show definitely illustrates that the world lost another great guitar player before his time. "The Lord done called another blues player back home". RIP SRV

I was there also. BAD fog. He came out and played "Sweet Home Chicago" with Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, his brother Jimmy Lee Vaughn and Buddy Guy as part of Clapton's encore.
Jimi Hendrix was his idol, he went to Jimi's father and asked permission to do this song. Rumor has it Mr Hendrix gave Jimi's foot pedal to him. My favorite is Look Little Sister.
I grew up with his music, it still shocks me that people don't know or haven't heard it. Thanks Dad and Mom for introducing me to all your music and letting me introduce you to mine. From Jazz to Folk to Punk to Country. All genre were in my house. Dad especially likes Texas music.
This is a Hendrix song but Stevie has added his own special Texas special sauce to it and made it his own with his amazing band along for the ride. It's obvious he loved Hendrix.

I think Gary and Stevie are the only two that do Hendrix covers justice. I've been obsessed with Gary's live version of Voodoo Child lately, completely mind-melting.
B.B King said, “ I play in sentences, Stevie plays in paragraphs” ! The base player & drummer are phenomenal! Homage to Jimm Hendrix neither could read a single music note! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Incredible talent. And his band kept up with him, they were great talents, too. Texas Flood is one of my favorites-- aw, they're all my favorites anything he played! ❤
🙌👏‼️yeah! Stevie Ray🔥‼️. One of my favorite reactors finally witnessed a sliver of the greatness of my favorite artist🎸🎶‼️ It shows how deep is your musical knowledge and experience that within the first minute you said this was a master class and he came out of his mother with this talent. Truth💯 This is a great version but I encourage you to watch this song by him performed in Toyko in 1985. Even without reacting to it, you owe it to yourself to watch. Next level in free flowing creativity, and stellar musicianship. So Stevie is at home in the blues. He grew up teaching himself to play by listening to records by Albert King, BB King, many others. He doesn't read music but it doesn't matter cuz music reads him. He is an open channel that music flows through. He loses himself in sweet surrender and gets swept away in musical bliss and takes us all with him. More please✌️ always live performances as witnessing his playing has the most magic in it. As a kid of the 80’s, not a month goes by I don’t regret saving a couple of weeks of drinking money to go see SRV live at MSG before he passed. Top 5 guitarists of all time EASILY.
back when the drinking age in Texas was 18, then got raised to 19 for a few years before 21...sneaking in the bars to see Stevie play was a lot easier then. Trying to explain to my parents how I was going to put nearly 2k miles on the car just to go see the man play in Houston, not as easy... But what a treasure to have those memories now.
he stopped in occasionally to a lil blues club I worked at in Louisville called "Stages" he would pop in and jam for fun.. He was in there just a few days before the Helicopter accident that took him away from the world much too soon
I saw him twice. Class of '86, SRV saved the 80's for me with a few other artists. The show I saw had Jeff Beck open and they jammed together a long time at the end.
There has been a gorgeous and intimidating portrait of SRV hanging on the living room wall at my mother's since I was a child. Now that I've moved out of my mother's place and she's moved to a smaller one herself, the frame is now up on my own wall. The man was an absolute legend and was taken from this Earth too soon. Inarguably a #GuitarGOAT and one of the best to ever pick up the instrument. Please check out more videos from him, but you have to watch live to really appreciate why he was such a legend. #RIPSRV #RosesForStevie \m/
I am mesmerized by this man's style: his hat, the way he manipulates that guitar, his passion, confidence, endurance, and on and on!! It's been said he started playing the guitar at seven years old. I think not. I think when he was in his mamma's belly he got a head-start and was strumming the umbilical cord. He's self-taught, too. Gifted as all heck! I'm sad he was taken from us so early in life. Can you imagine had he still been alive how is music would have branched out like nobody's business.
When you are growing up as a teen, you get exposed to the greats from the earlier generations, and sometimes you get jealous and start to wish you had your own greats. I , as someone who was a teen in the 80's, often looked upon Jimi Hendrix with awe, and it was he who I based my lament upon. He was a mythical creature. Yet it was Jimi who led me to another. I had heard of a guitarist who did a cover of "Little Wing," so I went to seek this man out. It turned out to be SRV. My lament soon disappeared, for in our midst, there was another great. One my generation could claim its own. But sadly, SRV was not long for this world, and he too would enter the realm of the mythical creature.
The candle that burns twice bright, burns twice fast. Unfortunately for Hendrix and SRV, it was fate instead of their own actions that made that hold true. Yet more proof that this world (and if there is a God, he as well), hates us and refuses joy to spread and flourish.
Stevie played with so much feeling its insane. You could literally be playing the same exact chords and notes and it would sound NOTHING like SRV. Cuz he had that groove, that touch, that sound!
Rude Mood and Mary Had a Little Lamb. Check out both of these by SRV. I remember when I was around 6 or 7 asking my dad who the greatest guitarist ever was. He answered without hesitation Stevie Ray Vaughan. I had no idea who that was at that time. Sadly I didn't listen to my first SRV song until probably 10 years later, I was stuck on Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Eagles, CCR, and AC/DC, and since that moment I've never once doubted that SRV was the greatest ever. Ever time I watch this man play a guitar I'm blown away by how effortlessly he creates magic. Lost him way too soon.
Perfection! Loved your reaction. Stevie was as kind, gentle and humble as he was talented. Please react to his version of “Tin Pan Alley” featuring Johnny Copeland, and then “Mary Had a Little Lamb” from Austin 1989. Thank you so much for giving my buddy his due. Donna G❤️
Life without you, is one of his most touching songs. Written for his good friend after his death, and played on the guitar that good friend made for Stevie.
I love watching people hearing music I've always loved for the first time. Especially folks like you who understand what makes music good. It's like hearing it for the first time again myself. After your first reaction, mine was, "Oh, dude, just wait." So thanks for this. :) SRV was a legend. I still miss him and always will. Try his version of "Little Wing." Another Hendrix tune he made his own.
I agree! His face says sooo much! It gives me a thrill just seeing his reaction! Am so glad I found this guy and can follow him. It has renewed some of my long-ago infatuation with some legends!😊
WOW!!! First reaction video That actually spelled the song correctly I am correctly I am so amazed. This song was originally done by Jimi Hendrix. However this is the only version That sounds like the original. He does embellish a little, but is keeping with the original intent. In fact it was like Jimi Hendrix himself was channeling through Stevie Ray Vaughan
One reactor couple listening to this recently said "You know there is no sheet music to this. He's just playing it off the cuff." Could you imagine trying to read this on sheet music?
We were fortunate enough to see Stevie Ray Vaughn perform in Halifax, NS, Canada back in 1988. He died in 1990. One of the best concerts I ever went to.
Stevie ask Jimi's Dad if he would give his permission to cover this iconic Hendrix song. Jimi's dad was thankful to the point he gave Stevie Jimi's WaWa Pedal which he's likely using right here.
One of the other really great things about SRV - as much as he is clearly a master of his craft, get him up there playing with someone else and he fits into their song, he doesn't take it away. Much to our chagrin at times, perhaps, but super classy. He is definitely one to always pick the liver version when available, it is always better.
Perfect rabbit hole to go down. I did a year ago, bought a guitar a couple months later and found a new passion. Stevie, Gary Moore, and Hendrix - best to ever do it. And if you plan on checking out more of his music, I HIGHLY suggest "Little Wing" @ the El Mocambo, "Lenny" @ the El Mocambo, or "Life Without You" @ the Capitol Theatre. Absolutely mind blowing performances, almost incomprehensible.
This man utterly slayed. Was a crying shame to lose him so early due to a helicopter crash. Just as he was conquering his alcohol addiction. I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news.. So much left on the table to where he could have gone. Another phenomenal cover he did of Hendrix is "Little Wing". Hope your fam blows it up in the requests!!! Pure 🔥
I encourage people to watch/listen to this song at his Toyko concert in Jan. 1985. It is next level, free flowing, creative, and long! Like 15 minutes long. It is absolutely next level.🔥‼️
Love SRV!!!!! I discovered him too late in my life and never had the chance to see him live. The closest I got to it was seeing Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Double Trouble play SRV songs for a little over a hour. That was pretty good too!!!! LOL
Stevie Ray Vaughn, Texas treasure!! You’ve got to check out his blues songs... incredible.. Absolutely Master for sure. Texas Flood is a good one for sure.
You don't wear the finish off of a Fender Strat without playing all of the freaking time. Dude was a wizard. There's a reason all of the great blues artists of the day wanted to collaborate with him.
I was fortunate to see him play in Cincinnati during the late 80s along w his brother Jimmy & Double Trouble. What a spectacular show! Absolutely insane! A month or so after the concert I found out that one of the guys I worked w was a good friend of SRV & that they were going on a fishing trip for walleye on lk Erie. He asked if I wanted to go pending Stevie's approval. Stevie said yes!!! Sadly Stevie meet his fate in the devastating plane crash before the fishing but I always thought how cool of him to allow someone he'd never meet go fishing w him. RIP SRV, legend!
He was the best & a kind and humble soul! Texas Flood live from the El Mocombo is incredible. He also has a performance with Jeff Healey, the song is Look At Little Sister & will have you dancing in your chair. For a performance that highlights his ability, his spirit & his singing & songwriting talent check out Life Without You from the Capitol Theater.
As much as I love the Hendrix covers such as this and "Little Wing", when Stevie Ray plays Blues is where he is a sheer joy to watch. "Ain't gone and give up on Love" is one of my favorites. "May I have a talk with you" is another. But I find that most anything of his reaches inside of you. He seems to take you wherever he is, and I love going there with him every chance I get.
Try this on for size. The man put on a sound check like most bands hope to end a full show. It looks like he just woke up and hasn't had his coffee yet ... until he straps on the guitar.
I'm addicted to SRV reaction videos. a lot of people put it like my man here said "he came out of his mother this way" referring to his talent. what I don't hear often is that it's the fruit of A LOT OF PRACTICE. what SRV had that helped him to reach this inimaginable level, imho, apart from talent (obviously), was his love for the blues. over here in portugal we have a saying "the runner who runs for pleasure doesn't get tired". and SRV didn't get tired of playin, they say he played ALL THE TIME. thank you for this video!
Hey it's the 78 year old grandma, welcome to the world of the greatest R&B guitarists to ever grace the stage, Believe it or not Stevie either could not or did not read music. Each song was played differently each time he played. This fantastic band was able to keep up with him no matter what, he once broke a string on his guitar, then changed guitars in mid performance, with the band never skipping a beat, it's on one of his videos. You must watch Texas flood, will blow you away.
Used to work in a small bar in Baton Rouge called Chief's back in the 70's. Stevie used to play there all the time when traveling between Texas and New Orleans. Would always do his set and finish last part of show doing Hendrix. Guy was so smooth while absolutely shredding it. He was also very cool with the staff. Really kind and gentle. Miss him
Hendrix=SRV=GOAT Simple as that. You said it well when you said his guitar is literally an extension of his being. They play with each other. Absolutely amazing. More please!!!
You just fell down the SRV rabbit hole. Have fun. Best guitarist that ever graced the planet. RIP SRV.

His cover of Little Wing (again a Hendrix cover) is absolutely insane, and should be required listening for any music efficionado.
And he went to Mr. Hendrix senior and asked for permission to do Jimmy's music. Mr. Hendrix's Sr. gave him Jimmy's pedal which he used in his cover .
My favorite. Little Wing is a must-listen!

He had magic
Yes we did. I heard someone say that his guitar had a direct line to his brain. Truth.
Eric Clapton gave his seat in the chopper to Stevie....we wouldn't have missed Clapton one quarter as much.
He is definitely masterclass.
Donna G❤️
If I had to pick one song to listen to the rest of my life it just might be that version of Tin Pan Alley.
Agreed, with one side note: as amazing as the version with Copeland is, personally I prefer his life in Tokyo version, it's just incredible :D
Life without you, is one of his most touching songs. Written for his good friend after his death, and played on the guitar that good friend made for Stevie.
When I was 16 yrs old, 35 yrs ago, I got home at midnight, and this concert was just start ing
R.I.P to the greatest to ever hold a guitar. The soul and groove this man had was next to none in my opinion.
Love it when young people discover great musicians like SRV. My heart swelled up with pride.
He's just playing it off the cuff."
Could you imagine trying to read this on sheet music?
He was a wonderful guitarist...sad he is gone. Great Hendrix song covered by SRV!
His cover of Hendrix's "Little Wing" is pretty unbelievable.
When man & machine are one !! 🔥 THE GOAT !!!! We all miss u Stevie !!! 🎸🎶
Pure 🔥
One of the best covers of Voodoo Chile that exists. He payed Jimi Hendrix respects. When I get a guitar I’m going to be learning this one ☝️!
I encourage people to watch/listen to this song at his Toyko concert in Jan. 1985. It is next level, free flowing, creative, and long! Like 15 minutes long. It is absolutely next level.🔥‼️
A Texas legend and one of the baddest to ever do it! RIP SRV. A super tight trio.
Life without you live is my favorite srv song/performance. Simply amazing!
Love SRV!!!!! I discovered him too late in my life and never had the chance to see him live. The closest I got to it was seeing Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Double Trouble play SRV songs for a little over a hour. That was pretty good too!!!! LOL
Hard to believe that anyone hasn't heard this???
"Texas Flood" live at El Macombo
"Life Without You" live at Capitol theater
Stevie Ray Vaughn, Texas treasure!! You’ve got to check out his blues songs... incredible.. Absolutely Master for sure. Texas Flood is a good one for sure.
Texas Flood Live at El Mocambo, you won't be disappointed. Stevie owns that room and his showmanship is outstanding during that gig
You don't wear the finish off of a Fender Strat without playing all of the freaking time. Dude was a wizard. There's a reason all of the great blues artists of the day wanted to collaborate with him.
The smile on your face says it all. SRV, another artist taken from this world too soon in life.
One of the best tunes EVER
I had the privilege of seeing Stevie many times at Antone's in Austin, Texas years ago. Truly great.
SRV is an absolute legend. His loss was a Rock and Roll tragedy with the likes of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and Leonard Skynyrd.
Try this on for size. The man put on a sound check like most bands hope to end a full show. It looks like he just woke up and hasn't had his coffee yet ... until he straps on the guitar.
He left it all out on the stage. The best ever!
How I wish I could have been his drummer.. Could watch this man all day every day
Stevie really killed it when covering Jimi Hendrix's ,VOODOO CHILE. Both are awesome in their own way.
Got to see him live twice. Amazing talent, very much influenced my early guitar playing.
The man from Dallas, Texas /// Oak Cliff Hood ,,,, lives ON,,,,, TEXAN FOREVER
Tin Pan Alley live featuring Johnny Copeland with SR: is one of the best things you'll ever see in your life
Used to work in a small bar in Baton Rouge called Chief's back in the 70's. Stevie used to play there all the time when traveling between Texas and New Orleans. Would always do his set and finish last part of show doing Hendrix. Guy was so smooth while absolutely shredding it. He was also very cool with the staff. Really kind and gentle. Miss him
Hendrix=SRV=GOAT
Simple as that. You said it well when you said his guitar is literally an extension of his being. They play with each other. Absolutely amazing. More please!!!
This is Stevie's tribute to Hendrix. Someone, in my opinion, who Stevie learned from, and surpassed.
