It looks like Luka is leading a defensive strategy where his 4 teammates need to cover 5 opponents, and he himself is a zone defender responsible for the free throw zones
Actually if he played zone defense it would be Ok -- it's like a free safety in football. But he's not putting any effort in playing the passing lanes, doubling at key moments, etc. Which is what you meant of course .....
Great video, good to see someone break it down like this. Sadly though, bottom line is his fans don't seem to care, and commentators/journalists around the league don't seem to care.
He won't win a championship until he learns to play hard on D. There are lot's of great players who can put up numbers. Championships are won by great players who can hold their own on D. The last two decades were dominates by two way stars. Only Steph is questionable here but even he is a decent individual defender and a good team defender (i.e., make effort, plays to the plan, good communicator, etc.). Luka is lazy, whines, and blames teammates. Not championship material in the NBA.
Right. Shaq in 2000 was nearly DPOY, then it was Shaq and Kobe in 01 and 02, Tim was a monster in 03, Pistons won in 04, Tim again in 05, Wade was at least a strong defender in 06 but most dominated offensively with speed, Tim+Bowen and them in 07, DPOY KG in 08, Kobe strong defender in 09 and added Ron in 10, Mavs strong defense in 11, Heat was near DPOY Bron, Spurs were near DPOY Kawhi plus Tim, the Cavs were still strong defensively even if stronger offensively, Raptors had Kawhi, Lakers were strong overall with Bron/Rondo/Dwight/AD/etc., Giannis near DPOY in 2021, Joker at least tried in 2023, and Celtics were elite of elite in 2024. The Warriors won once in 2015 not being super elite with Curry, but Bron’s teammates were out. Then they win twice with DPOY Draymond and then otherwise a god squad. Then by 2022, they still have strong defense surrounding Curry with Dray/somewhat Klay/GP2/Wiggins/etc. You don’t win being an outright loser on defense, or even not good. AI didn’t win 2001, baldy didn’t in 02 or 03, Dirk didn’t in 06, Suns as a team weren’t elite in 2021 and could’ve went further if especially Ayton could’ve went higher, and Luka just lost even though he was “the best player” last season

Dude got praised for his defence and made the finals last year, and now he's back to his old habits even worse than before, culminating in his worst season ever. Thought he grew up, but I guess he's still a kid.
I mean we saw that last finals, what Luka did to Gobert is what the Celtics did to Luka. I mean, there is a version of this where they go all in on Offense a la D'antoni Steve Nash/James Harden. But then they don't have the personnel to do that. This team is just last years team w some tweaks.
i hate this narrative that guys like Luka don't play defense because they have to do so much on offense. For one, they don't "have" to do so much, they choose to dominate the ball and create everything for themselves, because they don't like playing off ball (Trae Young, Luka Doncic, James Harden, Joel Embiid, Damian Lillard, Prime Westbrook, etc). And also, people keep pretending like Luka pulling a lazy stepback 3 every other possession is so taxing on the body that we just simply can't expect him to try hard on defense, when guys like Steph are literally sprinting around the court for the entire game, and still competing on defense. Look at prime Lebron, he carried the entire offense, and was still an elite defender. Prime Michael Jordan, same thing. Prime Giannis, Prime Kawhi, Prime KD, and so forth. You have some of the most lethal offensive players of all time who still compete on defense in spite of the offensive burden they carry. Luka is just lazy.
If something doesn’t change, and pretty significantly, you’ll never be able to win a championship with Luka on your squad. He put up some of the worst defensive stats ever (literally) in the finals last year. He’s such a liability on the other end of the floor it’s going to start killing him

It’s infuriating how he raises his hands after every bucket from the other team, when sometimes it’s clearly his fault. Obviously a very talented offensive player, but his mistakes and non-effort won’t win him anything if he’s serious.
You say this like 3ND players grow on trees. If anything Klay's resume is one of the greatest 3ND players to touch the basketball and he still has juice. The issue is Luka takes more 3pt shots per game than Klay. Then add in Luka's liability on defense and its led to this. Klay still is a good defender just not as fast which isn't the problem with the Mavs scheme it's when ppl(Mainly Luka) forget to box out or guard the corner 3pt shooters. As he is fishing for rebounds instead. Luka cleans up his 3pt obsession and shows better maturity on defense then the Mavs look like a different team. It starts with Luka.
@beastscale1892 Klay doesn't have the D anymore & he's inconsistent with his shooting. I can see Klay getting traded. They need a player who is good at defense & a consistent 3pt shooter.
one LUKA needs to pray about is that he doesn't miss like 5 games in a row,,,, because a line-up of kyrie klay/grimes marshall pj lively/gafford is so complete to compete with who is who,, better than with Luka on the floor, he might be an offensive juggernaut maybe the best in the league when it comes to getting baskets,,,but the current mavs team isn't that 2021/2022 team which relies on Luka to make baskets, it has too many weapons and two pgS besides luka who can organize the offence ( kyrie and exum) also both can speed up the offence which is beneficial to players like KLAY ( when Curry said you better stay here, I knew exactly what he meant in GSW klay didn't have to stay at the corner watching Luka run the whole position without sharing the ball run back to defence, and then run the same play again and maybe when Luka is blitzed maybe the ball is passed to you),,,, MY POINT BEING( for luka to thrive and be appreciated he needs to be in a bad team, which is okay defensively)
Tough spot man. If you’ve played with ppl who complain about everything and exhibit this kind of body language, it’s genuinely draining to play with. Especially when he gives zero effort on defense and blames his teammates for not helping over as he gives a free lane to the basket. But who’s going to check him? It’s Luka, like he’s already solidified himself as a top 3 player in the NBA. Does anyone on that team have the respect to say something to him and have it be heard?
It just sucks cause he's so good of a player but I don't think there's any1 in the Mavs staff that actually call him out and start teaching him to lock in more on defense, yes he is slow footed but he is a big dude, he can at least use his body to block lanes and his length to contest shots but I don't think any1 is emphasizing his lack of defensive awareness within the organization cause he's such a megastar
I’m so glad this video was made, if the opposing team is playing whoever offense on your best player i still refuse to believe that’s championship basketball 😭😂
"Luka has to do alot offensively" So does LeBron, Jokic, and Trae Young yet they're all expected to play defense and when they slack off you never hear the end of it. Yet we should overlook this when it comes to Luka?? NBA fans biases are ridiculous
I'm not a big Tatum fan, but damn, he plays both sides of the ball. You never see him give up points on lazy effort and he also takes the lead on offense. What is the point of a heliocentric offense when that same star gives up 30 points alone on defense. I can't believe that they can't play team offense for even a few possessions to take the load off Luka so he can play even competent defense. You'd think he'd have learned that lesson after his terrible defense lost them games in the finals last playoffs.
Great video and analysis! It sucks cuz hes such a good offensive player but he will never understand that if he doesn't work on his defense, he will never win a championship. Great shot making and offense will only get him to the deep playoff runs we have seen from him but defense is what pushes teams to the finish line
I don’t respect any player who is lazy on D. That’s why I don’t have Harden in my top 10 SG of all time and it looks like Luka won’t be in my top 10 SF of all time if he keeps this bullshit up
Not having Harden in your top 10 all time SG is one of the craziest things I've reas this week I got him top 4 lmao. He had his defensive lowlights for sure but he wasn't as bad as people made him out to be
Painful watch as a Mavs fan but it's entirely fair criticism. I'm glad you mentioned that it's 99% effort because Luka really is a solid defender when he tries, but he just doesn't a lot of the time, and it's infuriating to watch
Bro only 25 and already load managing on defense?? Michael Jordan and Kobe always knew they were gona carry the offensive load but thay never used that as an excuse to avoid defense as much as possible. Jordan and Kobe took PRIDE in playing defense

I was at this game in person, and it was apparent to everyone in the arena just how little Luka cared about playing defense that game. Easily the worst defensive effort I've ever witnessed
Harden was also not a playoff riser on offense come playoff time. I guarantee you if luka had played the 18 warriors he closes them out up 3 to 2 even with cp3 hurt.
This is every game 🤦🏾♂️u think us mavericks fans be trippin on Luka for nothing 😂😂he barely plays defense and barely pass the ball 😂😂but someone that watches stats and highlights would think he going off 😂
I would really be interested to see whats going on in Lukas mind. Why cant he bring his usage rate down a bit to preserve energy for defence? What is his main goal/drive playing basketball? Why does he throw his hands up when he doesnt box out and his man grabs the offensive rebounds?
The only thing worst may be his poor body language. He's reaching GOAT status in that category. Face it, this is happening because he isn't in better shape and if that doesn't change, last season may be the closest he ever gets to winning a title.
As a Kings fan, the more I see Luka play horrible defense, take hero ball shots, and cry, the more I’m happy we don’t draft him. He will leave Dallas before winning them a ring and Dirk will always be the greatest Maverick ever.

I’ve been saying this for years, but people thought I was crazy due to his offense. Now you can clearly see every team that plays Dallas is playing 5v4 on offense.
Saving himself for offense...No, don't buy that. What separates GOAT's from very good players is guys who give 100% in all facets of the game. Jordan, Bird, Jabbar, James had, or have, motors that don't quit. They were in shape and didn't loaf on defense "saving" themselves for the offensive end. Maybe Doncic wasn't put on this earth, in the word of Charles Barkley, to be a stopper but Sir Charles gave you a lot more effort than Doncic does. What you do if you want to be the best is do the best you can with what you have. Unless he gets lucky and the Mavs can supply enough talent to make up for his lapses, he'll likely have a James Harden like career, a guy that puts up numbers on offense but whose laziness on defense hurts his teams too much to win a title.
He's terrible on defense, but I think your point about him holding the offensive load needs to be reiterated. This early in the season it's tough to tell if he's fatigued or lazy.
I think a far better footballing comparison is Bruno Fernandes I don’t just mean the constant moaning 😉 an excellent player that joined a team beneath them without established stars or managers to hold him to account and curb his worst excesses so is uncritically indulged resulting in a player who puts out elite offensive numbers but isn’t disciplined enough in defense to ensure that his team will win the big stuff
The fact that you even say its understandable he'd want to rest in defense given his offensive load, shows how far NBA culture has fallen. It's not understandable. No leader prior to the Lebron era picked and chose when to play hard. Lebron started this trend late in his Cavs run, and now it's taken over the league. Unwatchable!
Lebron has actually been playing good defense this year every stat backs it up lol. And Lebron knew to play defense when it counted especially in the playoffs. Luka can’t do even that 😭
Luka is a team poison, he always blames his teammates for his own mistakes. he’s still immature and can’t take accountability. he’ll never win a ring, not like this.
He has a 1 year old, starts every season out of shape, but maybe he’s just sick of basketball having played his whole life. This season so far is the worst I’ve ever seen him, lazy, dumb decisions, out of it, three techs already I think. He won't win a championship until he learns to play hard on D. There are lot's of great players who can put up numbers. Championships are won by great players who can hold their own on D.
You don’t win being an outright loser on defense, or even not good. i hate this narrative that guys like Luka don't play defense because they have to do so much on offense.
@@LuKaa316 🤡
@LuKaa316 Klay had 1 block and 2 steals last night. Clearly he still is okay on defense. Not bad nor inconsistent just average.
one LUKA needs to pray about is that he doesn't miss like 5 games in a row,,,, because a line-up of kyrie klay/grimes marshall pj lively/gafford is so complete to compete with who is who,, better than with Luka on the floor, he might be an offensive juggernaut maybe the best in the league when it comes to getting baskets,,,but the current mavs team isn't that 2021/2022 team which relies on Luka to make baskets, it has too many weapons and two pgS besides luka who can organize the offence ( kyrie and exum) also both can speed up the offence which is beneficial to players like KLAY ( when Curry said you better stay here, I knew exactly what he meant in GSW klay didn't have to stay at the corner watching Luka run the whole position without sharing the ball run back to defence, and then run the same play again and maybe when Luka is blitzed maybe the ball is passed to you),,,, MY POINT BEING( for luka to thrive and be appreciated he needs to be in a bad team, which is okay defensively)

It’s Luka, like he’s already solidified himself as a top 3 player in the NBA. Does anyone on that team have the respect to say something to him and have it be heard?
This is why Rick Carlisle hated him. He was lazy and showed up every year fat and out of shape.
