    Nathan, thank you so much for such an incredible video. F is actually the true flat setting on Atlantis. It is essentially the capsule straight into the transformer, whereas Neutral and Gentle have their own signal paths with dedicated capacitor and resistor values. Funny enough, during development and testing with Fab Dupont, we weren't listening to or testing against the 87 at all. The "387" designation is related to capsule size (38mm) and transistor code (7) 😃

      Wow! I didn’t know some of that! Fascinating! I’ll be adding that bit of info in the short that I’m making this week for this mic, and also in future videos where I’ll be bringing this beast out.
      Thanks so much! And thanks for being just the best company ever! Cheers!

      No way! I've had an Atlantis for almost a year. I thought the Forward was mimic'ing the C800G this entire time. I had no idea that was the "flat" setting for this mic haha

    Your review was fun, inspirational and spoken like a TRUE EQUIPMENT JUNKIE! I should know, having been buying "TOYS" since 1977! Just HAD to HAVE this mic or board or tape deck or guitar ETC. ETC. ETC.! Thinking back, there was no internet, so trade magazine subscriptions were mandatory! All continued just fine for decades until the Mrs. finally put her foot down and dragged me by the ear to an EJA meeting. (Equipment Junkies Anonymous) I went to the meetings for about a year but I must admit, I sneaked in a phone to the last meeting and happened to see your video. Seeing a TRUE E.J. drool over a new mic was just too much to take! I slipped out the back door, raced to my studio and ordered the Atlantis clandestinely! Will have it right after New Years and can't wait to...YES, PLAY WITH IT!!! Problem is, how the heck do ya HIDE such a beast!?! Well, I have a dinner reservation at an upscale restaurant planned and will let her know I fell off the wagon
    and it was YOUR fault! Nah Nah '-) GREAT VID MI AMIGO! Keep it up! (Hey, have a feeling we'll meet at one of those meetings soon) '-)

      @@TheRecordist And a Happy New Year to You! Yes, let's hook up at the next EJA meeting. I'll smuggle in my new Tascam DX-40 in my raincoat pocket so we at least have something to play-with while listening to the horror stories of other Equipment Junkies. BTW......Took delivery of my new Lauten Atlantis today! Put it through the paces (VO only, Male Baritone) and I'll say this to you: Started in "Neutral." Loved it! Then switched to "Forward" and at that point, yes, I started drooling. (They should provide drool wipes in the box) (Haven't even tried Gentle yet) You were OH SO RIGHT! What a microphone! I've been through a lot of Sennheisers' and Neumanns' through decades of voice/production work and now, I have but two select words for my old "Freundes" across the pond............"Auf Wiedersehen!!!" (Insert group chants here: USA USA USA! Fade to black. '-) Cheers!

      Hey thanks, George! The 2035 isn’t a bad mic. Unless you have something as terrible as the Røde NT1A, you can usually make anything sound good with just a little EQ. It’s in the voice, room, skill - not just the mic. But a high end mic doesn’t hurt! Haha.

      Hey thanks! If it were me, I would remove the TLM 103 from the running. Aside from the bragging rights of the Neumann name, the TLM 103 is exceptionally bright. It’s got some sibilance issues that will almost always need to be addressed in post. But that’s my own take. You may think differently.

    Thank you, The Recordist! Because, "I closely bond with things.” And people. The thing is a microphone, which we did discover together as you claimed, and in not an insignificant manner. You discovered it first, and then I bought one, 3 months later after eating tuna fish sandwiches and selling dusty gear to afford it….while I returned several times to your playful virtuoso. I wouldn’t say virtue, because it’s a microphone, but I found your evaluation of the Atlantis at the vey least accurate, at the most honest, and abundantly entertaining. The FC-387 is in transit now like a new best friend I’ve never met. I have no delusions that this thing will cure my lack of talent or make me sound like my favorite crooner, yet I do love that thing.
    But the point of this post is the people part. You, my other friend I’ve never met, may never imagine, unless we poke out a text, the reach of your work, if we can call it work, perhaps a composition, which I shared with dozens of my friends who enjoyed it like so many of your silent viewers who appreciate your youtube presence which extends a far reach past just material kit. We see how true that is in your flood misfortuna which you graciously embraced.
    Bravo, for inspiring me to grab this mic to paint my wagon with recorded memories. Thank you!

      @@TheRecordist Thank you...for taking your time to reply back to me. Much appreciated - with heart. I have a worthy follow up to my microphone antidote which is a jolly good tribute to a Time Preservation and eulogy to a recorded voice community. Our FC-387 was procured, the room was amused - hit record - and memories were archived, happily. I was tad bit anxious with this precious Atlantis kit and when project was done, I found some comfort as it lay in wooden box and I returned to my practical SM57 for my daily driving with reckless abandon. I see you using same Shure mic in recent video. That's cool.
      Lay in wooden box is a metaphor, with my apology for the somber turn, our old friend and new voice talent for the Atlantis, finally lost his brave fight to Parkinson's with grace and humor. This is worthy of posting here - - knowing that the purpose of this space is to celebrate human record.
      Mindful of the joy in illustrious things procured to do the recording, but also to compliment your equally practical message to grab what ever kit is at hand. It's the doing and the playful trying to archive recorded voices that is abundantly entertaining. Cheers! I will find you to share some fun pics and thank you properly, Nathan.
      As for the gear...I've been an early fan and advocate for the SM7B setups I've delivered, but which have become a too familiar flavor to my ears. I enjoy the sound from a collection of nostalgic old microphones from the 70's. And I was on the path to invest in a microphone locker of modern favorites - but instead, for similar price range , I decided to end that journey and embrace the Atlantis due to its versatility and high build quality. I use Lauten Audio FC-387 in combination with the Universal Audio Apollo for spoken word mostly, and for some hopeful vocalist, and that kit is adored so much that I share that it with all my enthusiastic friends on tight budgets. It's wonderful! For live improve and random band acts, I equally enjoy more suitable Shure and Sennheiser hand held mics that take a beating.

    I've said it before and I'll say it again, Lauten Audio is my absolute favorite microphone brand that my studio relies on every single day. We have most of the classic holy grail legacy branded microphones. More and more I find myself begrudgingly setting up one of the vintage mics a vocalist insists on tracking with, because I know the Lauten would get me the perfect result effortlessly while basically being mix ready with only a minor tweak here and there. Sometimes I can spend an hour or more just trying to get a U67 or 251 to even roughly fit into place, and those are supposed to be the "OMG, I'm unworthy!" microphones. The Eden, Atlantis, and even the Clarion typically work the first time even when I just slap a mic up on a stand forgoing all of the extensive measuring and elaborate gain staging. Even their super affordable workhorse stuff like the LS and LA lineups have a role to play even in the most equipped studios.
    I love Lauten.

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@patricklaurin7272 hey Patrick. I just had a listen to Stuck and I have to say, great stuff!
      I 100% think the Atlantis would do your vocals proud - especially in the FORWARD setting. It’ll bring your top end into focus and the honking transformer in the mic will add some wonderful saturation.
      The truest answer is that anyone can make anything sound good with anything (within reason). You don’t NEED a $2000 mic to make your voice sound better. If you’re skilled with EQ or mixing, you can generally make anything sound good. Hell, Billy Eilish recorded Ocean Eyes on an Audio Technica AT2020, which is a $100 mic.
      But the reason the pros use expensive mics like the Atlantis is because far less needs to be done in post. It just sounds great right out of the box. These are handmade mics that are tuned to perfection.
      Now, that’s not to say that you shouldn’t need EQ with the Atlantis. Every mic needs EQ, but far less of it. Far less hunting for problem frequencies. Far fewer plugins to emulate saturations and natural compression and all that good stuff.
      So, bottom line, having the Atlantis won’t make your music any better. It won’t get you a hit song. It’ll just give you those goosebumps when you’re mixing, know what I mean?
      But seriously though, you’ve got great music!

      Hahaha. Thanks, Paul! The LA320 is a great mic but it’s very classic sounding and not the most versatile for different things. The DLX is amazing but to truly unlock its potential, it’s better if you have an Apollo.
      The FC-387 Atlantis is the best mic I’ve ever tried. The sound is incredible. Not only does it use a transformer, but also a custom mic capsule that is literally like nothing else in the world (mic companies tend to use the same capsules from the same factories). If I wanted a mic that could do everything that I only had to buy once for life, it would be the Atlantis. Straight up. Best mic I’ve ever tried. The DLX is also incredibly special but needs more investment.

      Hey there! I prefer them the exact same. That’s because the Towsend is a modeling mic and I can get all sorts of amazing sounds with it. The Atlantis is my favorite mic ever made just as it is.
      I would say that if I had to choose between both of them and the Townsend was just itself without modeling, I would pick the Atlantis. But the applications for the Townsend are immeasurable. So I will put them both at the same level of awesomeness.
      I know it’s not a clear cut answer but that’s how I feel!

    • @tobiasjansen9117
      @tobiasjansen9117 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is greatly helpful! I love the concept the sphere can do stereo. If the Atlantis could do that, I think I would probably opt for that. I own the LA320 already so I am already a Lauten Audio fan.
      My only concerns with the sphere are 1) it takes both my inputs on the Apollo twin, 2) software may eventually die out for support, and 3) it sounding potentially “cheaper” than other similar-priced mics. In greater detail…
      1) I do a fair amount of vocals + guitar at the same time. Having that flexibility would go away unless I used my other two mics whenever using that application. Would kinda be a buzz kill for “live” recording.
      2) I worry the software will get phased out in the next 10 years. $1500 is a lot of money. With the Atlantis, there would be no concern of using the mic for much longer than that.
      3) I do not have the ability to test these mics so all I have for reference is TH-cam demos and reviews. It is difficult for me to discern who is getting a check to say positive feedback. With that being said, my intuition is they are both fantastic mics and I would be happy with either sound-wise. Some reviews note the mic sounds thinner than what it is trying to emulate, but maybe they are splitting hairs. I’ve never used $5k+ mics, so I don’t have a frame of reference. Your response gave me assurance the sphere is actually a great mic.

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@tobiasjansen9117 hi Tobias.
      Maybe I’m just too small of a channel but I have never had anyone even OFFER me money to say positive things about a product. I HAVE had just two shady companies try to tell me what to say or tell me to run the review by them first before publishing, and I politely said “no”.
      I wonder what it would feel like to be offered a bribe? Haha. Probably awesome. But I couldn’t take it. I wouldn’t even sleep at night. I was really poor for a lot of years and so many people depend on honest reviews before they spend their little bits of money. I could never do it. That’s not to say that I wouldn’t do sponsors on my channel, because if that’s selling out, then I’ll sell out all day long! Haha. But even sponsors haven’t approached me.
      As far as the Sphere, let me tell you something. That mic, as it is, with no emulations, is a dynamite mic. Even plugging just the front capsule in to one channel. It’s really a great mic as it is. But the emulations are fantastic. And the options available to you after you record are just endless. It’s worth the money.
      Also, I don’t think UA will ever discontinue the software. They would have a million very angry customers very quickly. I was a little bummed when UA bought Townsend, but then I realized, they’ve been around for more than 50 years and are the leading audio company in the world. Better they continue it than an unknown company (Townsend Labs) who might go bankrupt.
      BUT, the Atlantis is a real transformer mic (has an iron transformer in it) just like a Neumann U87. It makes this 3D sound. Really amazing. And it’ll last forever.
      Both mics are massive. So be prepared to deal with a lot of weight. I had to upgrade my mic stand to a huge studio one with a 20 pound base and wheels. My Hercules stands were no match for either of the mics.
      The Atlantis has a body resonance if you tap it. The Townsend (DLX) does not. But I recorded a lot with it and never had any issues.
      I’m a huge fan of both and I don’t think I could live without either. Haha. So sorry to not be able to pick one. That’s why I always say that the Atlantis is my favorite non-modeling mic.
      Good luck, man!
