Safari Pedals Camel Strip - An Impromptu Look
I've been doing some tests with the H1E, I've made a recording with a dummy microphone plugged into the external mic socket, to eliminate the internal mics, and room noise. In a spectrum analyser, the noise at 1000 Hz, is at -114db, the worse noise is at 25Hz, -74db. If I listen to the file with the volume turned up to maximum on my Roland interface, and good headphones, I can only just detect the noise. At normal listening levels the noise is inaudible.
Very funny.... I Totally agree with your analysis and conclusion as well as your philosophy about not buying cheap cables, total wate of time and money and I hate them too
You can pipe in air from an inline fan and a baffle system as it enters your booth. My wife has a ton of cut up jeans in our attic we've had for 14 years which she has done nothing with. Maybe I'll build a small booth. Thanks.
The V47 sounds ok and sounds even better with a Flat K47 capsule. I built a K47 around a donor mic, the micparts V57 kit and a K47 capsule made in Canada.
Where did you get the Vermouth 2ndborn cable? They don't have them for sale anywhere.
Hey there. I do have a link in my description, but since I did this video, it seems they may not be selling the cables anymore. I’m not actually sure about that. If you find out, let me know. It’s www.v2cables.com. I think you need to email them to order and they custom make them. But, like I said, I’m unsure if they’re still in business.
@@TheRecordist Yeah, I have been to that website. They don't list any dealers, or give prices. just an email address. I guess I'll try emailing them. Oh another question while I;m here, have you tried the Lauten Ckarion/ If so, do you think there is a setting on the Atlantis that might be close enough to the Clarion to use them together in a Blumlien configuration?
@ hey. Well, the clarion is the one Lauten mic I haven’t tried. It is next on my list to grab. But, for the Blumlein technique, they shouldn’t be that different to pull it off. Perhaps in the Neutral position.
How Do You feel about the se x1 [original discontinued version] ?
You know, I have never tried that mic. So sorry about that.
@TheRecordist I got one at the pawnshop for $20 lol It quickly replaced my at2020 , which replaced my mxl 770. I feel like it's the better budget mic between the 3 imo
@ oh I don’t doubt the X1 would be better than those other two. I’ve found that sE Electronics makes some killer mics. I think I’ve loved every one I’ve tried.
I have a question: i saw that this mic always record stereo and one channel is the vocal and the other channel only ambient noise the dlx plugin needs both to emulate microphones but how is the mix done ? Because mixing a stereo track with noise in one channel it’s impossible. I can’t find any answer for this anywhere you are my only hope
Yes. It’s listens in 360. It requires the included 5-pin cable that converts to two 3-pin XLR cables. These cables plug into your interface. Then the plugin will convert the signal to dual mono. So each side of the recorded track will be the same. Then it’s only a matter of choosing one of the tracks and then you’ve got mono. So to be clear, it requires the plugin. Then it silences that other side if you choose the cardioid options. The plugin is like a mic polar pattern switch that you can choose later. So you can choose omni and it’ll combine both sides of the mic. Or you can choose cardioid and it’ll use only the front. Etc. So the plugin makes the mic mixable. Hope this helps!
@ Thank you very much i searched about this everywhere i also contacted UAD support they didn’t answer and you made all this long explanation thank youu 🥰 you are an amazing person and an amazing youtuber love your videos and thank you again
@ oh. Haha. Thank you very much! I appreciate that!
I agree with you. The NT1a is a bit harsh and takes a lot of work to make it sound good. I have one.
Yep. It’s a really bad mic.
i love your videos man!
Hey thanks so much!
Hi , brilliant information , I love this channel, any chance you can do a video on how to test / troubleshoot a dynamic mic ,eg SM58, and say a Behringer C3 with AUDACITY ? ie a visual test to confirm the mic /element is OK. Thanks in advance. Peace.
Hey thanks! I don’t use Audacity. I did try it one time for a client and then quickly advised him to get another DAW. It is quite limited. Visual test? I don’t know if any to test the cartridge. I just need to hear it. I can tell you pretty quickly. Dynamic mic cartridges are pretty resilient. They’d need some serious damage to stop working.
@@TheRecordist thanks for the reply.. Much appreciated.
What microphone are also interesting is a in Germany hand make weissklang v17 or v13 or L1, please test once of them :)
Hey there. Sure. I’ll try to get those. Cheers!
Another video of yours that I loved. You pushed me to the edge of a cliff, I am still there considering a jump :) But in reality I am happy with my Zoom F8nPro and Tascam X8.
Hahaha. Thank you, sir! You don’t need to upgrade the F8n Pro. That’s a great recorder! Thanks again for the compliment!
That plugin is spot on
Isn’t it though? It’s crazy!
I don't like all the extra funny stuff, I don't have time for it and it's cringy, but still good content.
So sorry I didn’t make this video to your preferred specifications. Thanks for the comment!
After reading up and watching your video about this tuner i have now ordered one today and i am now looking forward receiving it, Anybody looking to buy a cheap snark 😅 cheers John
Hi John. That’s great! You’ll never look back! Snark is history! Cheers!
Did you turn noise reduction off?
Hey there. Whatever was on the screen is what I did. I think I did.
I wonder how this compares to the Takstar Tak55. If you ever plan to review it.
I didn’t have plans to review it. I’m trying to stay away from cheaper marketed junk mics. These mics will end up in a landfill at some point. Hidden cheap mics from small companies are good. But these mass marketed Chinese mics are just not what I would ever recommend. Sorry about that.
if line audio made a shotgun mic i would be a happy man
Oh yes! Now that would be something!
I went from finding you on a rabbit hole about mics to subscribing and looking forward to every different video you’re gonna make. My compliments to the chef.
Oh thank you very much! So appreciated, my friend! Cheers!
In the early days of radio they only had omnidirectional microphones so they always picked up the room sound. This provided some pleasant liveliness and space, even on AM or shellac monophonic. Very natural and honest. I'm not sure whether it's always a good idea to avoid any room influence and leave everything to the plug-ins.
@@h.c.7799 that’s how it’s done. And it’s done this way for a reason. Time is money. A clean and dry signal to work with is always preferable to a wet one. Now, if we’re talking about film sets, then it’s sometimes a different story. Sometimes getting the sound of the room helps sell the story. Podcasts, radio, voiceovers, and voice acting prefer a dry signal. Is Disney doing it wrong?
Olden days harsh PA or low quality PA require SM58's. New Hifi PA will do your voice so much better with a modern mic (Sennheiser E935, SE V7, etc)
I disagree. Mics and speakers remain virtually the same now as always. Mic choice is subjective. An sE V7 might feed back or cause signal-sourced harshness just as much as an SM58. At the end of the day, both are dynamic mics; a moving coil design. Same thing.
The SM58 is flexible in the studio as you can easily unscrew the grille for a more airy sound.
Sure. You can do that. It doesn’t become a 57, but it will change the sound for sure.
I suddenly realized that I am done with the SM57 sound. 😂Thank you for this video. Time to move on to a new sound 😊
Might I suggest moving away from dynamics and on to large diaphragm condenser mics? Give the sE4400 a try.
Now that's a fekkin' trailer! BTW - I also struggle with the shame of Mismatched Washer & Dryer Syndrome (MWDS or M-wads). See you at the next meeting.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Hi. Great video!!! Could you pick one betwen this one an the Dachman Audio 87? For you, wich is better? Thank you!!!
Hey there. Well, both are fantastic mics. For me, I’d pick the Dachman DA 87i because it has more options that I would use (polar patterns, etc). It also has a really nice saturation due to the giant transformer in it. However, if I was looking for a clean all round use-for-anything mic, it would be the Mini K87. It’s smooth and rounded and has a really nice bottom end. Very pleasing to listen to. Remember, you can always add saturation but you can’t take it away. So, it would be up to you what you’d rather. They’re both great mics but totally different.
@TheRecordist thank you!!!
I’m waiting on an SA800g currently! A review on that would be sweet
Oh that’s awesome! Fantastic! You know, I’ve been asked many times to review the SA800G (among a few other pieces of gear) and I even emailed @stamaudio7618 to let them know. We shall see!
@ we shall se my friend!
I would like to know your thoughts on the mke 600 and how u think it stacks up to the 416 as I’ve heard there pretty close
Hey there. I don’t have much experience with the MKE 600 but I can say that I doubt it’s as close as we’d want it to be, else the 416 would stop selling, and it hasn’t. It’s still a hugely selling mic. For more than 50 years now.
Thank you for referring me to these WBC cables! I'm placing an order for them today! I don't get why TH-cam hasn't posted your videos on my main feed (TH-cam Homepage). I see you've done tons of videos since I last saw one of your vids. I'm going to geek out watching them this afternoon! I appreciate your knowledge and consistency!
Hahah. No worries! I think you’ll love those cables! They’re fantastic!
Anybody else notes that you might like one in cardio but the other one on figure 8? For me dram sounded warmer in cardio but dachman sounded warmer and also rounded in figure 8?
Yes. They all have their different sounds. It’s quite amazing how there is a clear divide between viewers of this video. Some really love the Dachman and others really love the Stam. Others still, love the other polar patterns just as you’ve said. Very interesting!
@@TheRecordist it’s like they are not sounded linear when switching the polarity, it’s what I hear 😬
Hi Bastion Baltazar Bucks. I hope I spelled your name correctly. Your furniture cushion and clothing-based booth (underware?) is well-damped and probably will sound great for critical V.O. However, I also like the "sound" of your open area where you record your videos, because it has a touch of clarity, a good balance of the room sound and reflection control. And here’s a tip: Keep your basement at 60 degrees fahrenheit or lower so as not to be trapped by a fart. The fart air, being much warmer, will quickly rise and filter out through the ceiling.
HAHAHAHAHAHA! Good tip! Hahahahaha
Very important point about the SM57 is that it has almost no bleed from a 45deg angle, this makes it monitor friendly if your using it live. They used to come with a paper template to show you this.
That’s great information! Thanks!
I've said this once before however, I will say it once more! You have the best YT channel and production in the cosmos.
Oh wow. Thanks so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to tell me that! Cheers!
I have a question. What do your leather strap holsters hold?
Hey there. That’s a good question. They hold my Apple AirPods 2. I crushed my last pair in my pants pocket. Then I kept them in my coat and would always forget them. This works out well. I also can stick my phone or items like flashlights or other things I need at the ready when I’m either on a shoot, or field recording, or anything really.
@@TheRecordist That is handy indeed. I could use something like that myself.
@@winnipegbandog I’m all about being prepared. Hahaha
You’re great. What drum samples / designer are you using? Great sounding samples in there. Super tight. Snare hits.
Hey thanks! The drum VST I used was Steven Slate Drums 5.2 or something. It’s ok. I used all kinds of compression, EQ, and saturation to have to sit properly, so they don’t pop out that good. Haha. But thank you once again!
I think you and Bridget have done a wonderful job! Hope you get to enjoy long and often! And of course, thanks for the inspiration.
Hey thank you very much, Manuel! I really appreciate that!
Is there anything sacred about the dimensions you chose?
Absolutely nothing sacred whatsoever. It’s the size of the room I was working with and the amount of padding I had to add. The measurements came after the room was sufficiently deadened. Haha.
Ayo I also built my booth that is around my desk for around 200$! I bought a bunch of PVC and a pack of 7 3.4m moving blankets and made a frame with the PVC, hung the blankets so they doubled up and finally put some of my old acoustic panels over the top to make a floating ceiling type effect. And I left some opens in the booth so it doesn't sound boxy and wallah! Great to see the nice cheap booths we can just make and it doesn't even take alot of effort <3 love your videos as always!
Oh wow! See now that is a great idea! Thanks for sharing! Cheers!
You are the best. New color, new lut? Looks gritty. Good too.
Hey! Thanks very much! No lut. Just got tired of the warm lighting and magenta hue. I used a power grade to transform my B-RAW footage into Alexa footage and then took some magenta out. I’m still hunting for the look I want. Haven’t found it yet. Thanks very much for noticing!
My pleasure. Thank you for your openness and generosity to share your wways! Big fan
@@pacovillalta4910 much appreciated, my friend!
Fun idea, since the colour of the interior of the booth shouldnt mater to the audio, a light colour could make it feel more roomy, if you ever come across a few rolls of a nice colour that is. just an idea. oh and onetime i found some really nice moving blankets for $10 each at princess auto. i bought a boat load of them, surely a mistake on their part. i love princess auto
That’s a great idea! When I bought the curtains, I was going for a blue color but they didn’t have any in stock. I had to build it quick so I just went for black. The light colored curtains are a great idea! And $10 each for those blankets is a steal!
+1 comment :p
Hahahah
20 bucks? Pretty good going! With those bass trap things I've read they need to be about 18 inches deep to have an affect, and be 2 or so inches off the wall. The sponge is supposed to free float and flex or something.
Yes. I got a deal on them so thought I’d try them. Total garbage. I could already tell when I received them. They’re just not dense enough.
@@TheRecordist what you can do is coat them to improve them. There are fabric latex paints (stinky though) as it might mean the air pockets/bubbles flex less. It wont do a great deal though tbf. Or soak a thinned acrylic paint/lacquer into them and let it set so they stiffen.
Very good! I puzzled for a long time about how to go about this myself, watching too much TH-cam and feeling scolded for not having a perfect acoustical understanding. Finally I just moved ahead. I framed a similar space (4' wide by 7' long and 7' tall) put in bats of rock wool between the framing. Then I covered it all with burlap. I feel like I'm in an Amazon delivery box, but it's a remarkably effective space for recording voice for podcast. It feels pretty acoustically dead, which I'm told is not perfect, but nothing competes with my voice in this space. Your videos are always entertaining, and this one was encouraging. Thanks~
Hey thanks! And that’s great! Just make sure there aren’t any holes in the burlap that can cause some rockwool to shed. That stuff is very bad to breathe in. Your method is the one I originally wanted to do. And I might still do that. I just needed something up immediately so I did this. I prefer totally dead because I can create the room sound later in post, if needed. Great comment, Craig!
By the way. Would you be interested in hearing a sample from my booth and give me your "feedback"? But not real feedback. That would not be helpful.😀
Hahaha. Sure! Send it to my email: recordist@thetps.ca Cheers!
Love it! Inspirational. I've been "building" mine under the basement stairs in my house. Congrats!!!
Fantastic! And thanks, Barry!
I have to admit, wife's approval is a turning point, a milestone in the pursuit of constructing a voiceover booth. It took me twenty years and about a month. I built the booth in total of four weeks... We are now a booth brothers, and we both are in danger of suffocation of wicked huge farts in there. So I built mine near a small ventilation window. It's a salvation.
Hahahahahaha! Well said! A booth is the best thing ever. Glad you have ventilation! It’s my next project!
Great job, thank for sharing.
Hey thanks! And no worries!
HAHAHAH wicked farts are the worst... especially with my booth door shut lol. I built my booth by cutting through the drywall under my stairs... its pretty small for a big ol guy like me. I will post a pic on discord later today.
Hahahaha. Are you on the Cult of VO Discord?
@@TheRecordist Yes I am lol. I have posted a few of my youtube videos in the for likes thread.
I've had thoughts of a fairly similar construction for a booth after I retire and move. I didn't even think about black-out curtains that also advertise acoustic blocking as well. NICE idea. Right now I am just looking for a value (read "cheap used or to construct cheap") mic isolation box for doing voice over. I don't know how long I am going to be in this house and am looking to get started in VO (already have audio equipment) and just need something to quiet things down and get some practice.
Hey thanks! Well, there are booths on Ali Baba and Ali Express. They won’t do anything for sound proofing but they’ll definitely help with reflections.
