      36 cables for 5 racks, 5 inputs, and a mixer is nothing! AC/DC has over 120 cables in their rig just for monitoring

      This is true, but it's also a decent amount for a person who's not playing stadiums & arenas, or has a road crew, or who has a gargantuan budget for such things.

    Having my own system was the best decision I ever made. Pretty east too. A digital console (I have an X32), a splitter, and personal mixers (PM-16) and you're set.

    We have been running in ears for years now.. My advice is to still do a sound check. I wouldn't recommend just setting up and calling it good. YES your in ear mix will sound A+ to you. But what are the audience hearing. I would still use the time to do sound check with the sound guy even though your hearing it perfect in your in ears....

    • @AdamCasada
      @AdamCasada 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Robyn Dolezsar I agree, although as I was watching I figured he surely didn't mean skip the house check. Just that you don't have to do a monitor check.

      They have an ART S8 Splitter so that one signal goes into their X32 for monitoring and another signal goes to FOH for the FOH mix.

    My band also have a ghetto super cheap wireless IEM system: two returns from front house(monitor and click) then those go into an small mixer on stage and then we connect FM radio transmitters(cheap ones) to the outputs and we use our phones as recivers using the radio app. It works, specially to hear the click :p

  • @OllieNCS
    @OllieNCS 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wonder if you could've bought a bigger patchbay, skipped the art s8 and committed just the patchbay to both signal splitting and foh sharing? Would this have worked?

    Hey Fluff, I’m currently building my bands iem system and found this video super helpful. Am I right in thinking, for monitoring purposes you just use a single mic which is part of the IEM mix? If so, what mic are you using, and have you found this solution satisfactory? Thanks

  • @christopherheadcase6886
    @christopherheadcase6886 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Fluff.. Love the video super helpful. This may be a bit of a long winded question. A year ago we started rehearsing using all line in on a mackie cfx12 and my drummers td11k works great for us. So we decided to build an IEM using a behringer x air 12 and a couple of galaxy audio as1100's with mee pro in ear monitors (cuz the ones that came with the transmitter were rubbish) So we put it together and here is where I finally get to the point. There is no bottom end to anything. It all sounds low fi like there is no response below 200hz so all Im working with is mid range and treble trying to fine tune a single monitor mix and even somehow try g to create 1 decent stereo mix for everyone or at worst a good mono mix but its difficult with no low end to hear kick and bass.. Any suggestions would be very grateful

  • @JK_35

    We have this same system and we always have to deal with shit at the small bars from sound guys that have no idea what we are doing with a splitter snake and always fight with us

  • @spoiledsk
    @spoiledsk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Local band in my area apparently has WAY too much money to spend:
    They did a similar set up (Kemper, Darkglass Bass DI, X32), but they included drum mics in there too, so the sound guy literally just plugs into their rack and doesn't have to do shit but adjust levels.
    Wtf is disposable income, amirite?

  • @imdartson3679
    @imdartson3679 7 ปีที่แล้ว +381

    I think we should take a moment and appreciate the fact that musicians spend years learning their instruments and vast amounts of money on the necessary equipment to carry out their goals only to sell the music for pennies, which people wont pay for and just pirate.

    • @perpetualgrimace
      @perpetualgrimace 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Yep, only us musicians are stupid enough do dump so much money and effort into something for so little reward.

    • @imdartson3679
      @imdartson3679 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Wanting to make music and not doing so would ultimately be even more stupid, though. I guess it depends on how you define "reward".

    • @perpetualgrimace
      @perpetualgrimace 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Well, it's ultra rare for it to be financially rewarding and it often isn't socially rewarding either. Haha. I think our society which values money above all else is horribly broken. And yet, knowing all this, I still pursue music because writing and playing music is its own reward. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • @imdartson3679
      @imdartson3679 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Exactly. My motivation is being an old man regretting not making music because there's no money in it. It's also frustrating when you tell non musicians you want to do music they assume you mean platinum selling artist on the radio winning grammy's. Doing it and it simply being out there is reward enough. It just sucks how the modern world has stripped us of our ability to make a living on it. Now everyone is making gear demos on youtube to compensate.

    • @perpetualgrimace
      @perpetualgrimace 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      100% agree. The one upside of our time is that practically anyone can record their own music, given a bit of money to spend on gear and the time and willingness to learn. There are so many learning resources available, and entry level gear is ridiculously cheap. The flip side, which you mentioned, is that recordings have been devalued. Now listeners would rather pay for the convenience of a Spotify account than financially support the artists making the music they love.

      been there... toured with a band that played there many years ago. I was the band's touring sound engineer and all I got was major attitude from the sound douche there. I think he was all tuned up... sniffle sniffle. Pretty small stage and not very high up off the floor... maybe 2 feet. Even if those nasty beatup old ass monitors would have taken a digger it probably would have shaken loose some of the dust and dried up beer in the horns. What dick that guy was. LA sux... it has since the late 80's when I started playing there. Venues think their doing you a favor by allowing you to play their shit hole club on nite with 5 other bands, playing 40min sets, and your playing the 7pm slot, in front of 6 people and the bartender for FREEeeeee... Reminds me of Nashville !

    I'm an FOH Egineee and I travel out with a few bands. One of the bands I work with have an IEM that I designed. These guys wanted it to be very cost effective so I suggested the behringer x-air 16 with a Seismic audio 24 channel split. The only thing that goes to the X-air is kick, snare, bass, 2 guitars, 3 vocals, tracks, click, and an extra AUX send if time doesn't permit for the guys to run their entire split . The x-air 16 has four AUX outs which I run for lead vocals, bass, and two guitars while the main out I run is for drums so he can have a stereo mix. They all run galaxy audio IEM's because they are inexpensive but I highly recommend replacing the earbuds with something like the Shure se215's if your budget is super tight. That IEM rig costs about $1000 US and works very well, the band has complete control over their own mixes with their phones

      My band run a similar system but with X18 (also acting as our main mixer) 3xLD Systems IEM (drummer isn't wireless) in a 4U Gator shallow rack case with mixer sat on top. It's not as high end as Fluff's rig but for a function band who don't want to take floor monitors to save space and everyone having control over their own mix onstage it's great and I think cost us about £1000.00.

    So for my band we have a super ghetto super cheap IEM system. We have everything going direct to my audio interface into a laptop, and we have a 4 channel headphone amp with headphone extension chords to run to our earbuds. The entire show is run on our laptop and we don't need front of house at all. Then the main mix goes to our pa which is actually a big home stereo system, but hey, for a small high school band, it works!

    Literally working on our rack today so great timing! We've been building one of these for our band, motivated especially after our first tour and the huge variance of sounds guys and house monitors at different venues which affected our performance at some stops. That and we sound a million times better when we can all hear each other and the click :) The rack is almost complete but as of now we only have wired connections to our in ears (I can imagine that would be a mess live) so we've been looking at different wireless options (budget buster!), was not aware of Galaxy so thanks for that info we will look into them. Great video, you've helped us move one step closer to getting this thing a reality. Hopefully in time for the next show...

    • @nicksigman3266

      Honestly, why aren't more people just looming their guitar cables and 3.5mm cables together? Just get a female to male 3.5mm as long as your guitar cable and plug your headphones in now your wired in ears are clean and are only restricted by the length of your guitar cable. I only see this being an issue with guys who play wireless.
      I'm building out this same rig but wired IEM to my drummer bassist and I. I'm using the Soundcraft UI16 $399.99. I generally wouldn't recommend sound craft but for in ears it does the job. You Dont need Midas pres for your ears although I'm sure it's nice.
      As far as I'm concerned the seismic audio split seems fine its okay if it breaks over time. You should be handy with a soldering iron if you are going to do a self contained setup because you will want custom length cables.
      Honestly though people loom your 3.5 with your guitar cable it makes a lotta sense.

    • @quintmasta14
      @quintmasta14 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Peter Thorogood I’m a drummer..... I’m also wireless, I’m also very animated when I drum though. I jump up sometimes, stand on my drums, walk to the front of the stage at points, we also walk off and on stage To start and end our set while a track is playing. It’s also amazing to be able to control my own mix and not have to rely on someone to make my mix sound the way I want it. It’s not necessary but man is it convenient.

  • @henrinortunen9285
    @henrinortunen9285 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hello Ryan! Your system is cool and i know why you created it way you did. But i want to point out that cheaper way to do this is to buy everyone in band headphone amp. (Like behringer etc 50$/player) then just locate the amplifires next to guitar amps etc.
    Guitarist can buy cable where is guitar cable and headphone cable glued together. (20$) Wireless is often useless cos stages are so small or guitarist has guitar cable anyway :D.
    Drummer can always have wired iem cos 1. drummer dont walk during show and 2. its more stabile than wireless. ( think about battery.)
    So. 5 member band (2guitarist,bassist, drummer and vocalist) can have this system about 700$

  • @pauliusmscichauskas558
    @pauliusmscichauskas558 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here's how you could go a lot cheaper and far more compact for a three member band:
    1 IEM transmitter with two receivers. The both receivers get their own mix, but they are mono. basically, stereo left goes to one receiver and stereo right goes to the other. The drummer gets a headphone cable. He doesn't have to move, after all!
    Behringer Xr12 as the mixer. It has plenty of inputs and wireless control.
    Basically, this setup is like 600-800 bucks...

      Ah finally found it, took a bit of scrolling on mobile app haha
      Ok fair enough on the builtin router and the dependence on the app, I'm fairly certain that you can flip the rack ears on the xr18 to have the connections face inside the rack rather than outside. Didn't realize the aux outs were only mono, so I suppose really dialing in the mixes to emulate instrument and vocal positions is easier on the x32 since the outs are stereo I guess

    Hey Fluff! Been watching your channel for a few years now and i love it! I am in the process of building one of my bands an IEM rig. Im using my 5150(3) 100w into the TC elctronic IR loader pedal. I have sound in my in ears but it doesn't sound amazing in my ears and it sound kind of messy (hard to explain). Could this be due to EQ-ing in my mixer or something else? I have the behringer x32 mixer. Could it just be that that pedal is junk? Im really not sure. PLEASE HELP!

    • @chucknguyen5531

      No. The splitter is to take a single INPUT and split one to the IEM and the other goes to FOH(isolated) for the PA system.

    • @riffism
      @riffism 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can split internally if you have few enough instruments...but there are only 8 physical XLR outs. You would need to get your outputs to FOH for EACH instrument AND get your outputs to each IEM transmitter. With a 5 piece band, thats a tall order...even if you use the AUXes. I needed an S8 splitter for my 5 piece band....and I still have to use a couple of physical.outputs from the X32 for FOH.

    I hate when an instructional video is inaccurate in the first 30 seconds... An “IEM” is not the monitoring system, it’s just the earbuds (in-ear monitors) themselves. You’re building a monitoring system. This system happens to specifically be using all IEMs instead of loudspeakers. You also happen to be using wireless receivers with the IEMs, which could also be wired instead (typically for stationary performers like a drummer).

    I have a question i know its been years since this had been posted. We have a problem with 2 iem units interfering with each other. They are the cheap t bone 100 and tbone 75 both running in the 863-865mhz range. No matter which channel we use it is impossible with ton of mush and garbage and loud noise. Do we need two completely separate units say one at 700 the other at 863? How do ppl do it with say 6 systems? Does each run at a completely far end of the range?

  • @Spidouz

    Sound guy get pissed because Fluff puts his foot on the monitor and screws with sound. Then Fluff get pissed of not having sound, therefore he builds his own monitoring system in a way the sound guy could go screw himself for the next shows...
    Long story short: never rely on someone else for your monitoring... and: don't mess with the Fluff :)

    One thing no one talks about in these videos about IEM’S. is the interference you get from the wireless packs. I’ve just spent a fortune on a rig very similar to this and the interference for all my band members is awful. There must be a solution? what unit was your friend using that the guy broke his buds by having such a high send level? As far as I understand the sennheisers I use have an automatic protection mode to prevent that. I have send a overly high signal a few times and its always lowered the signal to protect itself and your ears. I realize most people are not gonna spend the kind of money that sennheiser requires. So its obviously not a solution for everyone.
