    Cool!! Thanks for the quick reply. I came over fro Jeff Lindsey’s channel. I saw yours about a year ago and I am finally able to work on my car... 73 Firebird that I will be restoring. It looks like mine is rotted on the same panel as well as the roof panel. I am sure the trunk pan will need replacement. Whoever had my car in the past must have replaced the vinyl roof cover then they half assed it back on, they didn’t even use matching screws that they drilled through the trim. Really bad job that allowed water in and rotted the areas out. I used to own a 71 formula, but that was burned in a garage fire while I was overseas in Iraq while I was in the USMC. I will be frequenting your channel and Jeff’s for the next couple years.... Thank you for doing this.

    Nice work, I'm a tech by trade. U said your weld area looks ugly with the burns & splatter. what I find is right after I spot weld I run a small toothbrush size fine wire brush by hand over the weld. It makes it look better & allows u to check for pinholes & penatration.

    I have a 1977 Trans Am that has bad rust where the trunk lid hinges mount. Are they similar to your car? I’m pretty good at mig welding but I just don’t know how big a job it will be to replace the metal. I’m looking in a catalog for panel. Thanks, great video!

    • @DoubleRRestorations
      @DoubleRRestorations  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't think it was too bad of a job. The biggest part is just getting it down to where you can replace the panel, getting the inside and outside trim off and the glass out etc. Thanks for watching

    hey Russ, did you get the Steeljaw sticker. I don't know if I told you but I had bought my Camaro in Norfolk Va. back in 1983. Good luck. Jeff

    Where can you get that rear trunk hinge panel that you welded the hinges into? I need that same section and can't find any where.

    What do you coat the bare metal with after sand blasting prior to doing sheet metal repairs? What would be good options? Epoxys? Sealers? Something easily sandable would be prefered when it comes time for body work. You seem very by the book and like you do your homework and if I was going to take advice, it be from a person like yourself.

    • @DoubleRRestorations

      Thanks for the kind words. I like to use SPI epoxy primer. It a great primer. It actually has a gloss to it and sands very well. With it being glossy it acts as a built in guide coat when you first start to sand it. Also the black really let's you see the condition of of the metal when it comes to the highs and lows. Prior to epoxy I clean the metal with SPI solvent cleaner, followed up with their waterborne cleaner per the tech sheet. Also they offer it in several colors. In my latest vid, restoring my bullet mirrors, I actually show me spraying the grey epoxy primer. There is a learning curve to spraying their primer, but it's a great product. Hope it helps. Thanks

      @@DoubleRRestorations thank you. Took the time to look up some videos on the SPI epoxy primer and this one guy pushes it to the limits which I saw you left a comment on there. th-cam.com/video/-yA8q4K-_Bo/w-d-xo.html
      I'm sold on the durability of the product. I just hope the sanding process isn't so bad to where it constantly gums up the sand papers. Now to know where to order it from.

      Oh yea, Roger is a good friend of mine. The SPI epoxy sands great. Google Southern Polyurethanes. I would post a link, but it will go to the spam folder. They have a forum and they are located in GA.

      @@EddiesCustomsandRestorations I did find there phone number. Its 706.781.2220, if you try it, let me know how you like it. Also like I mentioned there is a slight learning curve with their epoxy. Practice on a few pieces before committing to your project. If you have any questions, I'll be more than happy to help.

    If you are replacing both quarters your deck lids is fine because you need to fit everything (gaps) before you weld both panels on , it gives you fiddle room ,once you got everything fitting right as a unit do the final welding that includes the tail light panel.
    your looking good but you need to get the new quarters and back panel mocked up on the car and fit everything as one and yes being careful is good , but with gaps do it by your eye once your close. And hinges can be bent a little to fit height
    this s normal with any fitting ,even the factory does this , so guess what I am telling you is you are fine stop worrying also when you put the quarters on to fit with trunk make sure you also try the spoiler on it as you do the fitiing

    • @DoubleRRestorations
      @DoubleRRestorations  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Len, will do. I do plan to fit the quarters and tail pan as a unit. Just want to get the doors back on the car first. Thanks for watching.

    Don't go by measurements you took before.Just fit everything,rear cowl panel,rear glass,etc.,etc.New panels will have different measurements.Dont try to overthink stuff.

      Albert, Thanks for the kind words. Tough to say without seeing the car. Just remember to take excellent pics during the tear down stage, bag and tag all the hardware and take good notes. A factory assembly manual will be really helpful. My email is in the about section of my channel. Feel free to ask me any questions along the way.
