  • I have come back to East Sussex, and this time, the rural village of Berwick. The church is fascinating - see the link below - and the countryside lovely, especially with the South Downs looming yards away to the south.

I am in search of what England means to me. Others will have another concept of this country and that is for them. These videos are about My England.

Congratulations Richard for another brilliant video. I started watching your videos to train my English, I am Brazilian and I love to study the English language. You speak very well, I can understand everything you say. Now, from being a simple student, I became your follower. I watch all of your videos. thanks.

A particularly beautiful walk Richard, with the greenery finally beginning to emerge . Much as I love our great Cathedrals, Berwick's Church is about as close to perfection as it gets The mystery mound in the churchyard was an unexpected bonus.

The old coach Road is, I think, part of the Lewes to Eastbourne turnpike that ran between Glynde, Beddingham, Firle, Alciston and Berwick (parallel with the A27) and on to Alfriston. I see you were also back on the pilgrim trail walk at one stage as well as Vanguard Way. Lovely to see Berwick and its environs beautifully depicted and I like the idea of you 'wheedling' your way back at the end!

Berwick is a place I've never been to but have been to Drusilla's park the other side of the A27 when my 'kids' were younger.
Lovely views from up there of the South Downs, hope you took some photos too.

What a beautiful area! How amazing it must be for those that live there!!! Lovely old church & church yard! All of the old cottages, farmhouses & barns were extraordinary!😍 Though not a fan of of the crop, the yellow of the rape blossoms on the landscape were quite stunning!💛

So worth being able to get out early ! Rape or cow parsley, both beautiful in their way but cow parsley wins out for me. First sound of a skylark for me this year. I love the church, the light is amazing through the plain window glass which replaced the stained glass after bomb damage. Thoughts are that the mound is indeed an ancient burial mound and used as a Moot later.

IN YELLOW TO DROWN (verse 1 of 5)
    Yellow rape crop pungent high
Carried along on the cool breeze of Easter
Vivid a splendour that drapes the miles

We have visited The Cricketers many times and also the church. The village is lovely particularly at this time of year when everything is coming into bloom. I was wondering if you have visited Milton Street which is just a little further on from Berwick. It has another very nice pub, The Sussex Ox. It really is nestled at the foot of The Downs and quite breathtaking. A superb video as always, Richard. Many thanks.

So beautiful to not have the hum of traffic and the encroachment of housing developments it was wonderful to hear chirping. but the farm land must be degrading from farming practices that leave the land reliant on chemicals fertilizer and weed killers and subject to erosion. I am sure that a rainstorm will wash away topsoil and silt the streams. Oops I couldn’t resist whenever I see a bare field those thoughts pop into my head. I shall no erase them. I will make efforts not to make them in the future🍀. 🤷🏼‍♀️🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖👍👍👍👍👍👍😘💞🙋🏼‍♀️

This shows Sussex county, the church and dwellings to be in such harmony. Farming methods may have changed, though it still shapes the landscape. The only way the viewer could improve on enjoying all shown here, is be there in person, and this may well provide the stimulus.

The vanguard way is a Roman road that ran from Newhaven to the Dicker to the pottery in Roman times, Part of this road still exists undisturbed at Chalvington and runs parallel to the road between Chalvington and Golden Cross
