    I think the Crossed Keys might be after the church's dedication: St. Peter. Traditionally he was given the keys to the gates of heaven. Saint Peter was also a fisherman. Lovely church and village. Fascinating history and the links to The Magic Roundabout.

    I remember reading many years ago that at one time churches were obliged to plant yew trees in order to provide the wood to make the longbows which were the mainstay of English armies at the time. There was never enough, though, and much of the wood had to be imported. It's good that we're still left with many of the trees.

      Sounds along the lines of Henry VIII's men planting oak trees in Richmond Park for the future restoration of Royal palaces, some of which are still there.......

    Interesting village, Simon called Peter was the first Bishop/Pope of Rome - hence the crossed keys. He was also a fisherman before being an apostle - hence the ship and nets full of fish.

    • @RichardVobes
      @RichardVobes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That was even more confusing - I assume Simon called Peter using the phone box in the village.

    • @ramibu239
      @ramibu239 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh thanks for that. I got the boat reference to the scripture where Peter wasn't catching any fish. So Jesus told him to throw the nets over to the otherside of the boat. The nets became so full that they were tearing, & they filled the boats up to overflowing.
      Had never heard the the other in regards to the keys.

    Years ago a teacher of mine told me that Yew trees were planted for their wood which was ideal for making Longbows. They were planted in Churchyards because their leaves are poisonous. In ancient villages the Churchyard was the only fenced/walled communal area and that prevented grazing animals from eating the poisonous leaves.

    The trouble with Saints is that they often have curious back stories. Peter, who changed his hame from Simon, was a fisherman and later became the gatekeeper of Heaven. So keys are nearly always associated with St Peter, and sometimes fishing iconography, as he was "the Fisher of men", harvesting people into the Church.

    I believe that the boat with the nets full of fish is a reference to John 21:11: "So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn."

    Lovely to see this. I was born and grew up in Chailey, was in the choir at that church from the age of 9, married there, and my Father's remains are at the corner of the chancel. There used to be a huge tree in front of the church, came down in a storm in the 70s, and there's the grave of the butcher, who's headstone tells the story of how he died.
    Definitely go back for more exploration. There's a roman road in south Chailey, also St Peter's school is interesting, there's a story that a sweep's boy got stuck in the chimney and died, his skeleton was found up there in the 60s/70s.

    Chailey looks a lovely little village. I only know the village from going down the A275 from East Grinstead to Lewes. Always like going along that road. Nice bit of East Sussex. I must check it out further! Cold! you must have been out early! Really warm yesterday around lunch time.
    Today I was at Brockham to the East of Dorking - ensuring a road race change was accurate. After I had a nice run East to Betchworth A lovely unusual church there, might be worth checking that out at some stage if you have not done already. Then up to Box Hill and back down to Brockham via Brockham quarry. Very interesting, in fact there was reference to this quarry at the Amberly Chalk pit museum I visited recently and that was brilliant. Really extensive quarry there again might be worth checking out at some stage better in the winter when you can see much more.

I learned that on a ghost walk in York , you actually get some good historical info on these type of walks . ( I also enjoyed it in the Cross Keys ) 🍺

    Yew trees were (and still are) sacred to the Pagans because they compliment rebirth beliefs of the old world. They're evergreen, had both male and female and seemingly lived forever. Our descendants could sit under the same tree hundreds of years later and your forbares hundreds of years before.
    When we decorate the Christmas tree, I think instinctively we are decorating the Yew.

    St Peter was a fisherman. On one occasion after a night of catching absolutley nothing Jesus met him and told him to cast his nets once again into the water. A bit disgruntled Peter does this and his nets come up full to the brim with fish. This was the beginning of an amazing adventure for him with Jesus. Jesus then told to him 'l will make you fishers of men" indicating a new direction for Peters life. Later Jesus also told Peter ..."I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. To bind and loose things in heaven and on earth".
    Peter is an important member of Jesus disciples and the picture on the church notice board sums up the very heart of his ministry. Jesus builds his church .... casting a net of the good news of the kingdom of Heaven across the whole world. The good news is.... 'God loves, God makes provision for us and God saves us. Peter's encounter with Jesus changes not just his life but countless others through the ages.
