When I was a college student I suffered a trauma so bad that I became deeply depressed to the degree I developed psycho-motor retardation & could barely talk (almost mute).
My Nursing instructor that year (because I was unable to give presentations needed for clinical; I felt like I was swimming in molasses) and she referred me to a 'Communication Therapist' to help me, which only confused & terrified me. My depression ~ that slowed my brain ~ made me think I was losing my mind.
Both of my parents, were in the Medical field and neither picked up on my symptoms. My depression, went undiagnosed, slowly resolved over the year; the trauma never acknowledged. And, even though I was in deep emotional pain, I never knew to ask for help?
This is just one version of what trauma can look like. In retrospect, never having an intervention to process the trauma cost me big time. Thank you Dr. Paul Conti for recognizing the huge cost of not helping to heal victims of trauma ~ especially our youth when an immediate intervention has the best outcome.
