This is one of the most underrated Mac laptops. I have seen so many reviewers trash this thing and I cannot understand why. Most people do not need a beast of a machine for their day to day tasks. I just picked up one of these used for traveling purposes and I cannot be any happier. It is a full MacBook in a 2-pound device that is light enough to travel with and has a full keyboard. Yes, it has one port, but dongles are readily available. This is my new favorite part of my "portable office." Thank you for making this video.
I'm a professional writer and this MacBook has been perfect for me. I use it for word processing and web browsing (research), plus media after work, and it has been nothing short of brilliant. You're right that it's not for everyone, but for a guy like me who values portability and ease-of-use over power, it's spot-on.
Just remember, you're paying about a 200-300% premium for the Apple-ness. But your workflow sounds like one that needs a netbook/chromebook which can be had for sub $300 so it's more like a 500% Premium for Apple for your needs case. It's more about OSX vs Windows here since portability isn't an issue when comparing as there's plenty of Windows machines that pack as much if not (a LOT) more power with the same form factor... but same goes for the price. Buuut all that matters though is that you're content with what you purchased, many others won't be for the $1600 price tag.
I agree Reuben. My last MacBook lasted 7 years although had about 20+ years use for business. Just superb. They work well and last. They are dependable!
Barcelona's Hot Crowd ... "MacBook lasted 7 years although had about 20+ years use for business." Are all Mac users that bad with numbers? lol, not trying to make the divide but you do realize that most people use their hardware for 8-10 hours at work then 2-3 hours at home. There's no way you can make a higher than 300% multiple in regard to normal usage...
I am watching this vid while shopping for a used 2017 MacBook on eBay for around $350-$400 just for writing papers for school, web browsing , answering emails and occasional movie watching. I think it's a good choice for portability since I spend a lot of time at Starbucks and Barnes&Noble writing essays for school ....plus I'm so used to Pages on my iMac at home.
I'm going to get a new laptop and I was wondering what do u recommend I need one that's able to handle games and video streaming I'm not a huge gaming fanatic for the PC but they are releasing final fantasy ten and final fantasy ten two and I want a laptop or a PC that can play those games mostly good with streaming videos from Netflix that don't require tweaking or replacing in a year and I was thinking on an HP but I need to make a good choice since the last time I got a laptop it was a horrible choice but at the time it was good but now its so out of date its dead so please let me know what u think I think ur great when it comes to technology witch is why I asked u
i happy that you emphasized that it suited your requirements out of it.......but goddamn apple trying to be make there board, Supervisors Billionaires with this pricing and i would love to try out one there laptops but its illogical to put myself under financial strain Nice Review tho!!! :)
I bought one of these and it's a joy to use. The keyboard is one of my main likes along with the great track pad. Battery life is brilliant and it sleeps without killing the battery unlike the SP4. The USB-C is a major plus, why MS didn't put it in the SP is shocking, I have a large battery pack so it's easy to charge when it runs low. The display in the sunlight is clear unlike the SP which was very disappointing. I only use it for office stuff and it is fast with no lag. Once you have spent time with this, even the Windows fan club will be impressed, as long as you are not a power user. It is obvious why, despite haters, this has sold very well and the second hand price remains very good. I have tried hundreds of laptops and this is my favourite by a distance, though costly, it is worth it.
andyH_England how is it so far for you I’m thinking about getting it I have a MacBook Air 2013 11 inch and on eBay there for about 550$ is it worth the trade
Glad you're feeling better! This was a great video. I'm still enjoying the hell out of my 2015 rMB and always happy to see other enjoy the fun computer.
i got mine for P50,000 at ATC. the guy said they were disposing the silver ones because rose gold was on the way. ask them if they still offer that. :)
Thank you Erica for answering me. I finally decided to give it a try and I love it. It is perfect for everyday use, easy to carry around, leaving on your lap, taking in and out of your pack or just lazing around on your couch and bed. Don't be misled by what anyone says just get one and try it. My only gripe is the price.
The reason for Apple not adopting Thunderbolt 3 in this computer is of purely technical nature. In contrast to Thunderbolt 2, which uses PCIe 2.0 x4, Thunderbolt 3 uses PCIe 3 to double the bandwidth. But the Core M chips do only have 12 2.0 lanes (due to lower power)
it wasn't a complaint, just a speculation. I didn't say I wasn't grateful for the content that's been offered, as it is hard to infer much about my life from your eyes, or your life from mine, through the Internet. as far as you know I do the same thing that you do, I am just simply making a speculation about the way that it is done. it wasn't an attack, I was merely noticing a common trend.
Im glad you like this MacBook as I’ve bought a refurbished 2017 12” model, this is my first MacBook, been thinking about it for ages and my windows laptop has stopped working, so it of to see if it can be mended and then I will sell it…
Definitely agree with everything said. I have the 2015 space gray model which I got after I returned my Macbook Air. It's definitely not for everyone, but for most students or individuals who travel and want a compact sized laptop, this is the perfect option.
Saw came across the video. I as well have a MBP and the 12" Macbook. I love both and use both. I am using the 12" right now. The MBP is my main system and the 12" is my on the go computer. I have a Windows PC for gaming but it does not get used very often.
ouch. yeah, I was wondering why my budget asus vivobook e403's screen looked better than my dad's MacBook air, I thought it was just his background that was washed out.
i've bought it a month ago and i was a bit afraid it wouldn't be as powerful as i needed, it's safe to say that i really love it. I had a 15" inch MacBook pro and i don't miss it that much.
The lack of a fan is really what sold this little guy to me. I can't stand it when the fan spins up in my Air even for a little while and moved my gaming PC to another room just to get rid of the sound of the fans (and drives). None of them make a lot of noise but the persistent sound gets on my nerves. The lack of moving parts should make it last longer as well.
Thanks, Erica. This video helped me determine that I'm getting a Macbook for college, due to its excellent portability and versatility. I'm not a gamer like I was before, so this laptop is just what I need.
yeah I took the macbook 12 inch on holidays with me last year was great using it in honolulu, hong kong, singapore and new zealand this is the prefect companion for uploading or editing photos on the go and even uploading videos on the fly, it saved me so much time getting getting all my photos from my DSLR to the cloud store options i use e.g. iCloud flickr etc etc. but I never then used it after i got back from my trip I switched back to my 15 inch macbook pro because its my main development machine and it has a bigger screen to work with that was all about just better work flow but for portability I love the 12 inch macbook its perfect for that.
Awesome review. Totally agree. I have always had larger MacBook Pro 15" (and 17" when still available) but found the 12" suited me perfectly, with 80% of use with external monitor. Cheers
Not a gamer computer, No good with premier or after effects, Bad camera for face time. With Final Cut X Only good for 1080 if you are not running multiple video lines or graphics on it.......so, should I buy this just because it looks cool or pretty? This is like having a iPad
I really appreciate the review. I'm glad to have found a TH-cam product reviewer that speaks clearly, isn't completely biased (or at least admits when she is biased toward certain elements of the reviewed product), and knows has to explain herself and the technical pieces of her review and about the product. I'm glad you enjoy the MacBook; I was looking into purchasing one myself, however I believe that based on my needs from a computer (I am a software developer and amateur designer), the best thing I can do is wait for this year's new 15-inch MacBook Pro. You just won a subscriber because of the stupendous review. Keep it up! I'm interested!
I got my Macbook Air 13 about a month ago and like you I like the lighter weight and being on the short side i appreciate that. Its is my main computer and it handles everything I need to do as a photojournalist.
this is basically ipad with keyboard...do not expect to do any heavy duty stuff... great for watching youtube, using office and emails...cheaper option is a chromebook, does exactly the same..
+XaznwarriorsX i agree with you but this new macbook just have one port which ridiculous and i dont want to spend 80 $ for such adaptor / third party adaptor, macbook air / pro just so better than this -_-
XaznwarriorsX Certain expensive watches retain their value, sure your macbook have longer value to them but they still degrade. If you're paying that much for a laptop, you better hope it has a longer lifespan in terms of value to them.
OK! People who buy Apple products after 3-4 years, probably don't care about RAM, Hard drive, Core processors, Graphics, etc. Its like someone buying an iphone 4 or macbook pro(2011) in 2016. Well they obviously don't care about specs at all. I gave my iphone 4 to my granny and she loves it. She doesn't care about speed, graphics, screen size etc. People who say apple product resell 3-4 years down the line should rethink what world they are living in.
Good review Erica. This Macbook has its pros and cons, but I was particularly interested in your review when I heard you comment that you use it for voice over work and that you appreciated the fact that it has "no fan noise" because there is no fan. Fan noise is a major concern for me as well (as it relates to VO). And as much as I like the fact that it has no fan, I am concerned that this Macbook will have sufficient power for audio software. Can you tell me what DAW workflow you use for audio (e.g., Pro Tools, Garageband, etc.) and if you have experienced any issues (dropped signal, jitter, etc.)? I would really be interested in your feedback on this. Thanks!
Great review. Around 12 when you mention price, don't forget all the free software (apps). This is my first MacBook after using PCs since the early 80's and I saved several hundred dollars by not buying business software I would have had to buy with a new PC, because it comes free with this MacBook 12. I love mine and just wanted to say thanks for a comprehensive review. It's spot on.
I'm just in love with this laptop. Portability is so important, I'm not really into gaming or anything so this is perfect for me. The way it looks and feels makes me wanna do my uni work😂 love it but the only thing is the priceeeeee. I'm still Gona buy it though. Try it out. If I feel like it's not worth the money after I've tried it, it's going backkkkkk to apple.
I think it's a design limitation with Thunderbolt 3 from Apple on this one, as it requires a controller for it so will make the logic board bigger and requires power so probably couldn't get the same battery life.
Don't like the keyboard :( was excited when the 2015 model came out, but was turned off with the keyboard feel. My hands/ fingers are large and cumbersome.
That was my beef, too. Should've known better, though: I just adore mechanical keyboards. For me (a touch typist) the typing speed is just the same, but I make a lot more errors. And the feel of the keyboard is so much worse.
As someone using a Skylake Zenbook (Core m3), I have to wholeheartedly agree! I might get a better typing experience, slightly larger footprint, and 2.6 pound weight, but if you wouldn't consider them to be the same laptops, then they're at least different takes on the same concept; since I also lack Thunderbolt and USB 3.1 gen 2, the extra 2 USB ports hardly matter to me... the HDMI out is a nice touch, though...
Totally agree with you. 6 years ago I bought a hp pavillion laptop that cost probably around $1000 to $1200... The battery lasted 2 hours.... not enough for a college student and freaking heavy as it was a 17 inch laptop. It didn't last me a year... I had to send it to the company 3 times for fan and battery problems.... and 3 years later, I couldn't use the computer without it being plug.... You see the picture. And this is why I only stick with Apple now... I have my Macbook 2012 for 3 years now and it is slower and I have a hard time to run 2 applications at the same time since it has only 4gb of memory. And the battery last me overall 3 hours. It was a little bit more when it was brand new of course. So in the long run in my experience, Apple computers last way longer than pc. I have a friend that got the old macbook model , the one that is completely white and in plastic. It's been 6 years and it work fine but she can't run 2 applications.
Aleqandre Hi Aleqandre, I am leaving a comment just in case YT doesn't send you notifications on my today's comments directed to you. Once again, just in case: zenon2086jack gmail
But she did later mention her interest in the Razar line. I mean, I switched to macs 13 years ago and am a somewhat happy "mac person". But even I am tempted to try out the Surface-type products.
+leiya107..Windows is not like it used to be. I recently purchased a Surface Book, and I absolutely love it, Windows 10 is brilliant. This coming from a Macbook Pro user for past 6 years.
Yeah, I know. That's why I'm tempted. If it wasn't for the need to run Logic Pro (mac-only) I'd have switched to a Surface when the 3 came out. Surface Book feels very overpriced though; how does it differ from a Surface Pro 4 apart from dedicated graphics and obviously a "proper" keyboard?
I purchased the SP4 first, it is a fantastic machine. Unfortunately I returned only as I prefered the traditional keyboard on Surface Book. The type cover on SP4 is really good, but needed something better Also I preferred the larger screen, and better battery life, and of course the dGPU It was very expensive, but I like that I can finish my work, and then detach the screen to use as a tablet for entertainment. Try it out for yourself. Like me you will love the change. It's also something different. Let's face it everybody owns a Macbook these days. 😂
Nice review. One comment: "ecosystem" typically refers not to your single desktop experience, but how all compatible devices function together: your phone, apple TV, ipad, desktop, this laptop and in addition the standardized software availability - such as app store, itunes and etc.
Thanks for this, I was thinking of getting a Macbook Pro but I don't really edit videos and was getting it for college. This seams like a better option and its sleek and beautiful.
I'm possibly biased because I spent 4 years of college hauling a 6 pound Dell Studio 1555 plus at least 1.5 pound charger on my back (plus textbooks) every day, so to me a 4.5 pound 15" rMBP ain't no thang, so I never really got the whole bag-ability angle of these new ultra-ultraportables. Certainly I'd still push more people to the 13" rMBP at least, for similar RAM and storage the price is very similar and you don't get dongle hell, do get a cushier keyboard, and significantly more sustained performance for all that. The extra pound for the 13" shouldn't even be feelable on a back unless you have a horrible disease. And my 15" will leave my cold dead hands :P
Actually difficult to find reviews of the 12-inch MacBook here in late 2018 when the new MacBook Air has been released. So nice to see this quality review with an extremely fair assessment of it's capabilities. Much appreciated!
The CPU is actually not nearly as fast as they say. It is very slow because of the termal throttling. Very nice computer other than that, but I don't know why anyone would buy an expensive laptop that has a CPU that throttles all the time. If you are OK with a slow processor, buy a cheaper computer. That is why this computer sucks, because THEY DIDN'T PROPERLY COOL THE PROCESSOR! No one should favor a computer's looks and quietness over THE ACTUAL COMPUTER PART. Sorry for being a troll.
+Daniel Oppenlander have you played with this computer or just watched speculations and Benchmarks? It's just fine. I know it throttled under heavy load and it's obviously NOT built to sustain performance. What matters though is how it performs in daily life. It's MORE than fine and I don't sense any slow downs. When I edit it's totally fine too. It does background rendering which is largely bursty. It's absolutely fine for that.
Erica Griffin It is probably fine. Mostly I am just mad that they did not cool it for heavy load. They should have used some progressive, quiet, small cooling technologies like ionic wind or piezo bellows cooling.
All the things you mentioned and being very positive about them was nice. You didn't mentioned about temperature. This thing runs hotter than my previous MacBook Pro 13" even under much lower usage.
Lets just say its uncomfortably warm if you are not using this computer in grandma's way. Or applications get optimized keeping this thing cool. Chrome is a nightmare believe me or not! Have a good day!
@@pat_solo any of the "butterfly keyboard" ones had minor issues of having hair or debree getting stuck under the keys and the fact that you needed to blow air inside them to take any excess items out.
THANK YOU! Jesus Christ! What for you could use 12" laptop otherwise than for "googling"? 15" is for serious business. 13" is fairly ok too. Everything below is simply too small for anything serious.
I'm in the same situation. Have a retina MBP 13", but wanted to "downgrade" to this. Is there really that much of a difference between the '15 and '16 models? Nothing wrong with my current setup of course, but I'm always in search of something more portable, yet capable. Nice video.
8:18 15 minutes to export 24 min video?! I edit in 1080p. Can someone show me a light and portable Windows laptop that can do this? I might have to get a Mac otherwise.
Final Cut is one of the best editing software out there, because it uses faster on-chip encode-decode. So for video editing on the go, MacBooks are nearly untouchable. At least when using Final Cut.
Purchased this because of my RLS. I had the 15" Pro on my lap and my legs were going wiggy cause it's too heavy. The 12" is so tiny and light it's almost not there! I love it so far.
the sad part about apple products are overpriced to the max. I understand the ecosystems is few of the reasons why people stick to apple products.... but the fact that they overprice everything is just ugh. Also, that laptop has 480p in 2016.... which is a potato.. just a thought.
I don't use my macbook pro's camera for anything really. Even though it's 720p, I use my phone and upload it to the laptop. But then again, other people might use the camera on the laptop more than I do so, yeah I guess a little spec bump for the camera would be nice.
Over priced is very subjective. If a person is willing to spend that amount of money on a laptop, it clearly holds more value to them than the money, likewise with Apple, the money is worth more to them than the laptop. This is standard economics. This is exactly the same for anything you every buy in life. You buy a product because it's worth more to you than the money, if it's not worth more, you don't buy it and claim it's overpriced. This is just in your eyes though.
Then get a used Apple product that's cheaper than a new one, and then get a 720p-1080p third party webcam. Worst case scenario if you can't get a USB-C one you can just get a little "cap adapter" that turns a normal USB to a USB-C. All of this cheaper than you could get the laptop alone for brand new. Problem solved. Apple is always going to overprice their stuff due to the fact that they're a "premium" brand. It's like buying a Lincoln vs a Ford. Doesn't mean you can't find a used Lincoln cheaper than a new one ya know?
I bought the same mid-tier model and felt a bit of remorse for pro shortly thereafter. Now I'm glad I got it for the portability, and have gone back for the pro for more everyday stuff.
That is one beautiful looking computer, the rose gold version looks amazing with that Dbrand skin you got there, great combination. I usually go for the black/gunmetal grey versions, buy my next computer is definitely going to be rose gold. So classy and so unlike me I think I could actually pull this off.
@Erica The reason Apple didn't make it Thunderbolt 3 is because it requires a separate chip. Skylake (even Kaby Lake?) doesn't have the feature built into the chipset. Rather than use a third party chipset, like Windows laptops are currently implementing, Apple decided to use the space for battery.
I like your point and agree with and see the benefit of this mac book being fan-less and thus silent. I am impressed with your mac books' core-M5 processor's power to do things, like surf the web, do photoshop and video edit, at the same time. I absolutely love the screen resolution and retina display of your mac book. I am impressed with the speaker output being high quality loud and clear sound.
Hi Erica. Wondering whether you've had any second thoughts or whether you continue to be happy with your decision? As a second computer I'm considering the Macbook - largely for its portability - so thought I'd check in to hear your thoughts. Cheers.
I love it. I am a teacher living overseas. My workflow is very light (documents, web, a little photo editing) and I travel a lot. This computer is the best piece of tech I have ever owned.
Nice video, but a real geek love power techs, never a 12 inch mac is going to be better than a full PC. My wife have a macbook pro but for easy or small task. If I want a good laptop XPS 13 is way better or Surface Book. Display is better.
lol then why do many professionals prefer macs over windows? Let's be honest mac os has the better operating system and that's why people prefer to use them.
umar azam You know how many user have MS and MAC...? Do a really good research and replay me back... I'm a Net tier 1 and all my coworkers use Windows or Linux. Mac....... just maybe for easy tasks...
Dell XPS Quad +HD is 3200 x 1800 pixels with touch.... XPS CPU Core i3, i5, i7 vs Macbook CPU Core m3, m5, m7, XPS Ports, 2 USB 3.0, 1 USB-C, SD card reader vs Macbook Ports, 1USB C, For me i can do more in the XPS and is not loud... Still was a nice video....
The Dude more pixels doesn't mean a better display. Also the reason this laptop uses core m is because it's the most power efficient processor per performance yet. Basically it does what most people want with their laptop ie surf the web, edit, write documents perfectly and if people want more performance they should use a desktop since laptops aren't meant for the best performance anyway.
About the pretty everyday computer argument: I switched to a 13" rMBP a year and a half ago for exactly this reason. I work in IT and it is not unlikely for me to use my Macbook 16+ hours a day. It helps a lot if you have a nice, well-built machine.
anyone would prefer a MacBook pro it's cheaper than this piece of shit and faster and more performant than the new MacBook. only an Isheep would this good for nothing laptop
Bobby Jay its gonna come with only 4 usb type-C port which won't be a huge deal for me cause my nexus 5x is already having a usb-C port but connecting other peripheral would be a huge pain also I hate Tim Cook he is removing glowing apple logo from every other laptop just to make it small which sucks.I don't mind carrying an extra pound for such a gorgeous back logo
pratham kesarkar He's removing the glowing Apple logo? That glowing Apple logo looks awesome. Tbh, I've always wanted to try a Mac but the price gives it away. I hope the 2015 MacBook Pro version is still on. Apple removed the i5 versions.
One thing I've always liked about macs is that it's more visually appealing and the OS X works really well but that's where it ends, they often use outdated hardware, charge you a bundle, and some software doesn't work as well as on a PC or Windows based laptop, i.e. Office for Mac.
this experience nonsense is just down right pathetic. Why do you people buy into that marketing bullshit?! Throw those money in the toilet and flush - that will be better money spent. Core m5, $1600. Nice joke.
i loled at this. The funny thing is that people will actually buy these laptops and make entire videos justifying their poor choice citing reasons such as 'build quality, experience, innovation'. Yeah right! there are laptops with freaking core i7's for less than 800 dollars and they're really well built and offer much much more than this over-expensive and over-hyped piece of crap. the ideapad 710s or the zenbooks are good examples of this
Nothing is perfect about that crap laptop! Don't fucking act as if that is the only fucking option in the market. Please don't lie about video editting on a hardware that is weaker than my smartphone. You compare it to a tablet, well with the amount of ports it has and the hardware, it might as well be a tablet. How can you sit and talk about something you know shit about? What windows PCs did you try that did not meet your requirements. Hell any slim windows machine can blow that crap toy out of the water anytime. I am no fanboy, I would understand you if you said that you used macbook pro for your editting work, but come on a fucking ultra low voltage M processor for work??? Gotta be fucking kidding me.
Sjeng Kwee "more power" are you kidding me? That thing has No power at all. Any type of work would require you to buy better hardware than this. Well if you only surf and don't mind the slow speed then you're alright I guess.
Sjeng Kwee I would say no. The price is too damn high and the product is not worth it. If you're only going to use it for those tasks, you don't need much power that's true, however any other laptop can do it, so what is the point of buying this device?
Man don't be ridiculous. "Any other laptop can do, so what's the point of buying this device" the simple answer is : Mac OS. It's about the overall experience (hardware+software), not the raw power of the machine. Yes, you can edit video on this machine with Final Cut (probably not with Premiere). People even do 4k on this little things. This machine beats largely my macbook pro 2010 which I still use for audio and video editing. Yes you get PC with twice the power for half the price. Let's see how they will age, and how productive one is with those. I know I do more in mac than windows/linux. As most of the mac users. Apple is highly priced, and it has always been. Just get over it and enjoy windows 10.
Today, I just watched your video and I was able to find a used Macbook 2015 for $749 plus tax in NYC. I need it just for like you said in your video, portability, and simple tasks and some editing. I was very pleased with my purchased and when I went to set up my new MacBook at Apple Grand Central Station, I came across the USB converter you mentioned and I am all set. The guy at the store said I saved 55% on the price and come to find out it was only charged 6 times when reviewing the battery condition on the computer. I basically got a brand new computer! Anyways thanks a lot for your help. Greatly appreciated.
Hey, dont know if youll respond but I hope you will. I was wondering if the laptop has efficient cooling since it doesnt have any fans. Im planing to use it as my daily driver to watch movies and browse.
Don't know if its too late, but I use it for the same things. I usually have 20+ tabs open with a mixture of safari and chrome, spotify and itunes, email, facetime, imessage and microsoft word open at the same time continuously (plus a few more programs) and the hottest it has ever got was waaaay cooler than my 2015 hp laptop when I had the same programs open. It feels like a metal door handle after someones held it for about 2 minutes straight if that helps
Ive had a few iPhones and a few months ago I was looking for a mac finally after only ever using windows. I love the flow of mac and how it never freezes and everything is so smooth. I only really use it for word processing, youtube, fb and listening to music along with FaceTime. I was looking at the new Macbook but the low quality camera and lack of ports along with ridiculous price is what made me buy the 13" air. I just need 2 USB ports and an sd card slot for what I do, especially since I only have 128gb HD. I paid $1100 CAD on sale and its really all I could afford. The lack of ports on the macbook also defeats the purpose of having an ultra portable laptop when you have to carry a bunch of adapters.
+Chia Hau Lim thank you. I really cannot live without the ports, I don't know how anyone could. But I guess I'm pretty ocd and like things a certain way. I hope future generations of MacBooks don't all get rid of ports all together
Excellent review of the 12" MacBook. Very honest review, and it makes me consider it. I do have the 13" MacBook Pro, and I do see the advantages with the 12". I saw a brief glimpse of the Zoom H2n. Is this the recorder you use? Have you done a review of how you use it for your recordings? Thank you again :-)
I very much enjoy this sort of detailed review, done by someone who's actually used the device they're reviewing for work for a significant period of time.
OS X Pro tips: Erica you should start using the trackpad gestures for exposé (four fingers drag up), much easier than pressing f3! Also enable three finger drag, it's much easier! (Settings -> Accessibility -> Mouse and Trackpad -> Trackpad Options -> check enable drag and select "three finger drag". Now when you want to drag anything, just touch the trackpad with three fingers. Also, Install Spectacle, it's a must have for multi-tasking! It's open source, learn the shortcuts and your life will get 50% easier. Thanks me later! Bye!
What do you think about the base 2017 Model with Kaby Lake processors? They are on par and sometimes out perform the MacBook Air. I'm finally upgrading to a MacBook because of this video showing me last years mid tier option can do your needs...and knowing that this years model is even better.
I'm sure I read somewhere that the Intel processor inside the 12" only has built in support for USB C so Thunderbolt was never an option. I could be mistaken.
Erica, your videos are great. I am really confued between macbook 2016 (m7) vs macbook pro 13 inch. I see you had macbook pro 13 inch. I believe macbook is your daily driver. Do you miss the extra inch in macbook pro? I don't travel as much so portability is the top factor. Considering macbook pro 13 (refurbished) is indeed same price as macbook, which one would you recommend?
This is one of the most underrated Mac laptops. I have seen so many reviewers trash this thing and I cannot understand why. Most people do not need a beast of a machine for their day to day tasks. I just picked up one of these used for traveling purposes and I cannot be any happier. It is a full MacBook in a 2-pound device that is light enough to travel with and has a full keyboard. Yes, it has one port, but dongles are readily available. This is my new favorite part of my "portable office." Thank you for making this video.
THIS!! not *everyone* needs a gaming pc!
I agree I bought me one and earlier this year a IMac 2017 on eBay
I'm a professional writer and this MacBook has been perfect for me. I use it for word processing and web browsing (research), plus media after work, and it has been nothing short of brilliant. You're right that it's not for everyone, but for a guy like me who values portability and ease-of-use over power, it's spot-on.
how can you type on that keyboard?
*Please Top Post: I made this entire video on this little laptop!*
Macbooks are amazing.
For the ridiculous price this MacBook costs, I expect you to make a house using this laptop lol
The price is reasonable for the quality you get.
I'm going to get a new laptop and I was wondering what do u recommend I need one that's able to handle games and video streaming I'm not a huge gaming fanatic for the PC but they are releasing final fantasy ten and final fantasy ten two and I want a laptop or a PC that can play those games mostly good with streaming videos from Netflix that don't require tweaking or replacing in a year and I was thinking on an HP but I need to make a good choice since the last time I got a laptop it was a horrible choice but at the time it was good but now its so out of date its dead so please let me know what u think I think ur great when it comes to technology witch is why I asked u
i happy that you emphasized that it suited your requirements out of it.......but goddamn apple trying to be make there board, Supervisors Billionaires with this pricing and i would love to try out one there laptops but its illogical to put myself under financial strain
Nice Review tho!!! :)
It's the best MacBook made in a long time. The specs make it seem much less than it is.
*I know you are all jealous of my Twilight shirt lol. I wore it just to get reactions*
Lmao was just going to say something
Could you do a review on Twilight?
I love it, I was such a twilight fan, still love it but I got over the obsession.
And you got some...
LoL did not even noticed it until seen this comment ^^
*You'll either love it or hate it*
*Or maybe you'll just learn to tolerate it*

*Hey everyone, I had the flu and am finally recovered; hence the long in-between.*
Glad you feeling better Erica. ^_^ It put a big smile on my face when i saw a new video from you. Plus you showed off my dream laptop :D
Glad you're recovered and back on producing videos: I enjoyed your review!
Glad you're feeling better! 😊
Yayy! Welcome back :)
Glad you're feeling better! This was a great video. I'm still enjoying the hell out of my 2015 rMB and always happy to see other enjoy the fun computer.
Very good review. I totally by all the arguments, but i think that the price for such a computer, is ridiculous, at least here in Sweden.
here in Philippines this laptop cost 64,990php for the base model, exactly the same price as the Macbook pro 13 inch =_= not worth the price.
15 000 kr för den datorn är alldeles för mycket, med tanke på att en 13' MacBook Pro går för 500 kr mindre..
i got mine for P50,000 at ATC. the guy said they were disposing the silver ones because rose gold was on the way. ask them if they still offer that. :)
***** How much is that in dollars? :-)
Patrik Drevestedt it's $1,000USD :)
Michael Harris go Apple certified refurb
The way she talks reminds me of EverythingApplePro
They'd be a cute couple tbh
+Adrian Rios I'm sure she's much older than him
+Adrian Rios you need some milk
I noticed that to.
Hey EverythingApplePro here
would be a great form factor to re-release with apple silicon!
The reason for Apple not adopting Thunderbolt 3 in this computer is of purely technical nature. In contrast to Thunderbolt 2, which uses PCIe 2.0 x4, Thunderbolt 3 uses PCIe 3 to double the bandwidth. But the Core M chips do only have 12 2.0 lanes (due to lower power)
are you really deep into MacOS? why not the dell xps? I use it every day for home and work and is really amazing. I love it.
is there a single tech youtuber that hasn't been bought out by DBRAND?
+DerpMuffin is there a single viewer who is grateful for the ability for creators to make content - thanks to sponsors? Why complain?
it wasn't a complaint, just a speculation.
The answer is no. I'm just kidding it's a sponsor bro.
Well, at least Dbrand makes decent products. (Unlike these stupid "gaming chairs" promoted on almost every gaming channel (+twitch))
LOL @ gaming chairs... bahahaha.
Im glad you like this MacBook as I’ve bought a refurbished 2017 12” model, this is my first MacBook, been thinking about it for ages and my windows laptop has stopped working, so it of to see if it can be mended and then I will sell it…
take a shot whenever she says 'workflow' 😂😂
I bought mine mid-2015. Still using and loving it now! :) Love its portability!!!
I love how high Erica's eyebrows go!
Definitely agree with everything said. I have the 2015 space gray model which I got after I returned my Macbook Air. It's definitely not for everyone, but for most students or individuals who travel and want a compact sized laptop, this is the perfect option.
When you find out Erica wears a Twilight shirt... Its fine. I just need to focus on her face throughout the whole video and I should be happy.
I rather look at the tee shirt ... :P
Saw came across the video. I as well have a MBP and the 12" Macbook. I love both and use both. I am using the 12" right now. The MBP is my main system and the 12" is my on the go computer. I have a Windows PC for gaming but it does not get used very often.
"Apple really cares about the quality of their displays"... I'm watchin the vid on a macbook air 😒
Haha. Apple really cheaped out by not even putting an IPS display in it.
MacBook air's display isn't even IPS? I thought it was a 900p IPS display
shut your face! Its a 1440 * 900 resolution LCD TFT display.
The resolution is thus just acceptable but the viewing angles are TERRIBLE.
ouch. yeah, I was wondering why my budget asus vivobook e403's screen looked better than my dad's MacBook air, I thought it was just his background that was washed out.
Same XD
I've been using the MacBook as my daily computer for over a year now and I still love it. It's perfect for my needs (no video editing here).
"I love the rose gold" Says the girl who covered the entire exterior with a black matte skin… OK.
+Barton Lynch the keyboard is still pink and the sides... The accent looks cool
Where do you buy this skin ?
KabWazAr 306 - Dbrand, she explicitly said where to get it
i've bought it a month ago and i was a bit afraid it wouldn't be as powerful as i needed, it's safe to say that i really love it.
If you got bigger fans for your gaming PC, the RPM goes down and therefore a quieter fan
If you can't stand the noise, maybe you should search for "silent pc review"
Thanks, Erica. This video helped me determine that I'm getting a Macbook for college, due to its excellent portability and versatility. I'm not a gamer like I was before, so this laptop is just what I need.
is it just me or does Erica look like Ellen page?
It's just you.
😅
Not just you, she does kinda look like Ellen Page!
I think she sounds more like Ellen Page.
Umbrella academy ❤️
this has to be in the top 3 of best reviews for this laptop, addressed all questions I had and in depth. Helped me decide. Thank you so much
love those UE mega booms behind you, love mine
Boom/Mega Booms are the best!
They look huge... pretty sure the Mega Boom is not THAT big :P I am guessing those are just commercial props.
+Aleksander Hoff she's just a teensy tiny person :)
yeah I took the macbook 12 inch on holidays with me last year was great using it in honolulu, hong kong, singapore and new zealand this is the prefect companion for uploading or editing photos on the go and even uploading videos on the fly, it saved me so much time getting getting all my photos from my DSLR to the cloud store options i use e.g. iCloud flickr etc etc. but I never then used it after i got back from my trip I switched back to my 15 inch macbook pro because its my main development machine and it has a bigger screen to work with that was all about just better work flow but for portability I love the 12 inch macbook its perfect for that.
Just got one. I have high hopes coming from a Late 2012 MacBook Pro. I think this will do all I need to. Thanks for the look at it.
I got too distracted by the 2 UE Mega Boom speakers.
Rose gold with black dbrand. Looks so nice. Why didn't I think of that before putting a clear wet skin on....
You're so rich, letting the macbook pro just lie around and not caring abt it 👍👍😂
Awesome review.
+3165dwayne Agree
Finally someone making sense.
ultra portability is why i got a macbook air. but then this thing became better (at least for what i use it for) now i want one. :(
same.
Dat Twilight shirt
Isn't it irritating? =P I wanted to see how people would react heh
HAHA
#TeamEdward
+Erica Griffin Will I get a girlfriend if I wear a twilight shirt ?
I really appreciate the review. I'm glad to have found a TH-cam product reviewer that speaks clearly, isn't completely biased (or at least admits when she is biased toward certain elements of the reviewed product), and knows has to explain herself and the technical pieces of her review and about the product. I'm glad you enjoy the MacBook; I was looking into purchasing one myself, however I believe that based on my needs from a computer (I am a software developer and amateur designer), the best thing I can do is wait for this year's new 15-inch MacBook Pro.
You just won a subscriber because of the stupendous review. Keep it up! I'm interested!
could you do a review on the zenbook 3 when it comes out?
yeah!
I want the Zenbook 3 so baddly ,if it only had a 1080p camera and not VGA
I got my Macbook Air 13 about a month ago and like you I like the lighter weight and being on the short side i appreciate that.
Its is my main computer and it handles everything I need to do as a photojournalist.
this is basically ipad with keyboard...do not expect to do any heavy duty stuff... great for watching youtube, using office and emails...cheaper option is a chromebook, does exactly the same..
One degrades in value over time and one retains it?
OSX App store > Chromebook's. I don't know shit about Chromebooks but I know that ;)
+XaznwarriorsX i agree with you but this new macbook just have one port which ridiculous and i dont want to spend 80 $ for such adaptor / third party adaptor, macbook air / pro just so better than this -_-
XaznwarriorsX Certain expensive watches retain their value, sure your macbook have longer value to them but they still degrade.
Thanks!
Are you sad that it’s been discontinued? I am!
Also consider the ASUS zenbook 3, which is a direct competitor. I like the navy with gold trim model
shut your face! I just looked at it, but the MacBook looks 100% better😭
it has advantages, the MacBook is definitely a more minimalist design, which does look pretty nice.
Wouldn't say that; a lot is down to personal preference and aptitude. I know a few people that really like it. But I don't.
I have small hands but I hate it too.
I don't love it or hate it. It's just not for me.
Especially at that price point. Ridiculous. I'm still rollin with my 2011 macbook pro and its snappy and fast after all these years.
Same here! Haha
Ryan Thompson I wish more people would say this. The world would be a better place
Aleqandre Hi Aleqandre, I am leaving a comment just in case YT doesn't send you notifications on my today's comments directed to you. Once again, just in case: zenon2086jack gmail
Omg.. nostalgia.. 2015 was all MKBHD, Tim Schofield and Erica Griffin! Ive been watching reviews of the 12" and you popped up! how cool.
3:10 I wouldn't ask the obvious question. But I can already see people asking it:
Why not a Surface? Or any Windows 2-in-1?
Because Windows 😁
You're not small. You are compact! :)
+Ankit Talukdar thank you =)
Thanks for this, I was thinking of getting a Macbook Pro but I don't really edit videos and was getting it for college. This seams like a better option and its sleek and beautiful.
Final cut TEN!
+Rich Fletcher I know ;) I like saying X
+Erica Griffin lol. Just don't walk around saying it over and over again really fast. People will get the wrong Idea.
And my 15" will leave my cold dead hands :P
she sounded so hesitant when she said thank you to dbrand
Most people that buy them have no idea what you are talking about. If they did...they would still buy it cuz windows laptops are cheap and not trendy
Why do you add those black sticker on the macbook? Isn't going to block the heat dissipation?
+TRF_Clan no
All the things you mentioned and being very positive about them was nice. You didn't mentioned about temperature. This thing runs hotter than my previous MacBook Pro 13" even under much lower usage.
I did mention it actually... it measured 115 at worse... It's not that bad though and only happens after a long while of editing video.
Lets just say its uncomfortably warm if you are not using this computer in grandma's way. Or applications get optimized keeping this thing cool. Chrome is a nightmare believe me or not! Have a good day!
+حسن نور interesting that doesn't happen to me
it's just not worth that price, that's the end of it. I'd buy it if it was 800$
Mik Wind you can buy it second hand. It around 700 and it still like new.
@@ThuongNguyen-yk1zs exactly i got one from ebay for like $650. DEFINITELY worth the price.
Does this MacBook have the keyboard issues that I heard about or was that in a different year
@@pat_solo any of the "butterfly keyboard" ones had minor issues of having hair or debree getting stuck under the keys and the fact that you needed to blow air inside them to take any excess items out.
@@Abel-Alvarez so it wasn't a big deal?
The thumbnail did so much justice to the beauty of the 12 inch Rose Gold MacBook!
Great review Susan!
I'm a buyer at 13 or 14 inches
Yep, Final Cut Pro is is known for it's export speed.
Kieran Smith thank you...simple economics 101
Apple magic works. People overpay atleast 800$ for just logo. Unbelieveable how Apple can make money.
That is one beautiful looking computer, the rose gold version looks amazing with that Dbrand skin you got there, great combination.
I usually go for the black/gunmetal grey versions, buy my next computer is definitely going to be rose gold. So classy and so unlike me I think I could actually pull this off.
I don't trust her. She's wearing a Twilight tshirt.
+Suman Mitra it was a joke =P I did it just to get reactions
well... its working :D xD
+Erica Griffin yup it's working
@Erica The reason Apple didn't make it Thunderbolt 3 is because it requires a separate chip. Skylake (even Kaby Lake?) doesn't have the feature built into the chipset. Rather than use a third party chipset, like Windows laptops are currently implementing, Apple decided to use the space for battery.
Erica long time no see - any cracks in your marriage yet?
You know where to find me - shoulder to cry on and all that...
+Mr2pint nope Jon and I are great. Married for life.
Erica Griffin Good to hear
I like your point and agree with and see the benefit of this mac book being fan-less and thus silent. I am impressed with your mac books' core-M5 processor's power to do things, like surf the web, do photoshop and video edit, at the same time. I absolutely love the screen resolution and retina display of your mac book. I am impressed with the speaker output being high quality loud and clear sound.
Can I have your old mac??? Lol
Hi Erica. Wondering whether you've had any second thoughts or whether you continue to be happy with your decision? As a second computer I'm considering the Macbook - largely for its portability - so thought I'd check in to hear your thoughts. Cheers.
Yo Erica wanna get married? I promise I won't steal your mac.
+Ryan Pierce I'm already married....
Erica Griffin guess I'll have to find another way to get imacs 😭
Married at 14? Is that even legal?
Erica is 14?
***** still doesn't answer why someone said married at 14
Never said this is better than a full PC lol I said just the opposite. It's just powerful enough and that is all... XPS display is not better. Sorry.
I'd prefer the MacBook Pro
me too
anyone would prefer a MacBook pro it's cheaper than this piece of shit and faster and more performant than the new MacBook. only an Isheep would this good for nothing laptop
pratham kesarkar I 100% agree with you. I hope the new MacBook Pro doesn't come with one port only.
Nice joke.
Believe or not there are worst things to spend your money on. For example a $1000 audio cable...
Chia Hau Lim ah, right, i heard of this one. Good point.
i loled at this. The funny thing is that people will actually buy these laptops and make entire videos justifying their poor choice citing reasons such as 'build quality, experience, innovation'. Yeah right! there are laptops with freaking core i7's for less than 800 dollars and they're really well built and offer much much more than this over-expensive and over-hyped piece of crap. the ideapad 710s or the zenbooks are good examples of this
You dont understand who its for and it also has a pcie 512 gb ssd, however it would definetly be better to get a surface pro 4
hr1100 lol
Good looking out on dbrand. I just ordered copper for my iPhone and Mac. Exactly what I was looking for.
Ahmed Tha King what kind of work Needs more power?
Sjeng Kwee "more power" are you kidding me? That thing has No power at all. Any type of work would require you to buy better hardware than this. Well if you only surf and don't mind the slow speed then you're alright I guess.
Ahmed Tha King if you just use for instance word safari and Spotify at the same time at most is it okay then?
Sjeng Kwee
I would say no.
Have last year's version and like it. About to see how it does with an external monitor. Thanks for your review.
My computer is like 400$ and a lot more powerful than this garbage
Thank you! at least there's a little bit of common sense around here.

I fully agree. I have been using this wonderful piece of hardware since last year already, switching to it from MacBook Pro..
I think the MacBook is desired with wireless in mind. If you needed the ports than the air or the pro is the right choice for you.
Final Cut 10, Final Cut 10. Thanks for your opinion. Considering buying a used 2017.
OS X Pro tips:
Erica you should start using the trackpad gestures for exposé (four fingers drag up), much easier than pressing f3!
