    Henry Hank - Is a former professional boxer from Greenville, Mississippi, USA who resided in Detroit, Michigan. When he started boxing, he took the name Henry Hank out of admiration for three-time world champion Henry Armstrong. Hank changed his name to Jusuf Salaam when he embraced Islam in 1971. Hank never fought for a world title, but he fought six former or future world champions. During his boxing career, Hank worked part-time as a zookeeper at the Detroit Zoo to supplement his ring earnings. He went full-time after he retired from the ring.

    I was fascinated as a kid by his style. The left hand held so low as he bobbed and weaved, then came up firing. The Ray-Robinson marcelled hair also lent an element of drama of his moves.

    To illustrate the difference in eras, in Hank's day he couldn't even get a title fight, today you've got fairly limited, ordinary guys like Paulie Malignaggi who are multiple division title holders.

    • @Johnl1800
      @Johnl1800 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That was the biggest criticism of Hank, you never knew which guy was going to show up. The following is a good description of him:
      "Inconsistency was his biggest downfall. He was either knocking guys out, or clowning his way to defeat. He was capable of having an off night when least expected."

    Hanzagod: Thanks for posting Henry Hank and resurrecting the memory of the great earlier day “bob and weavers” from Jack Dempsey, to light heavyweight *Young Firpo, whom Jimmy McLarnin called “the greatest fighter I ever saw” to Fidel Labarba, Eduardo Lausse, Bob Satterfield, and Gil Turner, ... this was a treasure to see despite being quite short.
    *Note: Young Firpo is not to be confused with the Argentinian, Luis Firpo.
    A Portland, Oregon, sportswriter depicted Young Firpo’s style in describing Firpo’s fight with Tiger Jack Fox :
    “Firpo charged Fox and belted him an awful left to the chin. He bobbed to the floor in his famous crouch, shot up again swinging, and a right half knocked and half pushed Fox through the ropes and to his haunches. Referee Louttit evidently considered it a shove rather than a punch for he helped Fox to his feet and did not count.
    ***
    “But Tiger Jack did not keep it up and the weaving, unconventional Firpo always rallied in the pinch to drive him back and rock him in turn with heavy punching broadsides of his own.”
    Film footage is thought to exist of Firpo’s epic battles including fights with Leo Lomski, Tiger Jack Fox, John Henry Lewis, Wesley KO Ketchell, and George Manley.
    Promoter-Manager Joe Waterman was interviewed in October of 1934 in Los Angeles while managing Fred Lenhart. The Los Angeles Times captured the revealing interview:
    "Joe is just as garrulous as his pals, but in a different way. He astounds interviewers by going into ecstacies over a fighter other than his own. That's strickly against the rules and the boys will probably pick up his Union card when the word gets around.
    "Waterman is in town [and] all he talks about is ... a one-man pugilistic pestilence in the person of Young Firpo.
    "Greatest thing in boxing shoes I ever saw," enthused Waterman. "He'll murder every light heavyweight from the champion down!"
    H. L. Gregory wrote of Firpo in 1930:
    “Firpo hits terrifically and that weaving style makes him hard to solve. Many a boxer had tried to “weave” in the ring since Jack Dempsey made the style famous but with most of them it is utterly unnatural. Firpo’s weave is different. He always come out of his “weaves” throwing punches, and that knack of weaving himself into position to hit his crashing punches was what made Dempsey so effective.”
    Firpo challenged and sought for years to engage world light heavyweight champion Maxie Rosenbloom into a title fight but his efforts were in vain. Similarly, after Bob Olin won the championship Firpo challenged Olin to defend his title but this challenge, too, fell on deaf ears. After Olin had taken the title from Rosenbloom, Firpo wired a Spokane promoter: "Will fight Fox, Lewis, Rosenbloom or Olin. I fear no man."

      @eddieperez8432 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      you're right

    • @TainoMantis
      @TainoMantis 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      It's simple. And you pretty much summed it up. Today, you don't have to fight a lot and you get tons of money for 1 fight. Back in Pre-1960's eras, fighters only got paid peanuts (unless you were the Heavyweight Champ). Fighters had to fight A LOT (not just to make money, but also to develop those old school skills, beat the hungry competition, and challenge the 1 champion of the division). Today, you don't have to be anywhere near the best in a division and you get a title (along with a list of contenders for that title).
      Example: Al Singer turned pro in 1927. By the time the year 1929 was on its way out, Singer's record was 46-6-2. He was 23 years old and had already fought prime legends like Bud Taylor, Tony Canzoneri, Kid Chocolate, and top opposition like Davey Abad and Andre Routis among his crazy (by modern standards) schedule. Because he fought so often, he was constantly sharpening his tools, learning little tricks, and seeing different styles, until he was considered a difficult & crafty out boxer to fight against by the end of 1929.

      Absolutely Hank was an excellent fighter. You really have to analyse those losses because many of them were against high level opposition, some were close fights and others he should have probably got the decision in. It was a totally different era back in those days so double digit losses were not looked down upon and almost expected with the amount of times the fighters fought per year.
