- In the MLP FIM episode, Canterlot Boutique, Rarity is challenged with making her business a success, and to do so, she felt like she has to keep making the same popular dress for everyone. In doing so, she loses her creative spark and burns out. We can learn an important lesson here on how hopping on trends all the time can kill our creativity, and why we should just express who we are at the end of the day.

That is how I see Disney now. There’s more Sassy Saddles running the company and far fewer Raritys left to provide any creativity in their content.

There are still Rarities, but their projects keep getting cancelled.
They just gave The Ghost and Molly McGee the axe despite it being one of their few actively running animated shows in that demographic, and was a real quality piece of animation.
... I'm not even gonna touch on the parks and movies right now, the cartoon shows were the one place Disney has been on its game.
I'd say there are significantly bigger problems with Disney, leading to the abomination that it is now, but lack of creative talent is certainly a contributing factor.

Older games and a few new games feel like the developers put passion behind it.

This episode cut deep. Rarity is an artisan who makes bespoke works for individuals. But the truth is most of us like to be creative, and work in jobs that tragically make that impossible.
It's funny you bring that up, because the other day, I was feeling that way with my work.
Though, I had a bit of an epiphany and asked myself, "If I like to express what make me unique, then how can I apply that to my job?"
My attitude toward work really shifted. Hope that helps.
Let me just take this opportunity to say that Rarity is an extremely underrated character. People are so tempted to overlook her as some shallow "zomg someone call the fashion police!!1" character, one of the dime-a-dozen in media who is merely obsessed _with_ fashion, but Rarity actually participates IN the fashion industry by virtue of being a dressmaker/fashion designer-a profession which indisputably falls within the realm of art. As an artist (musician) myself, I find the episodes focusing on her dressmaking woes to be incredibly relatable.
TH-cam is full of videos saying how good she is and how you shouldn't judge her for being so feminine, and I've seen so many people defend her that I can't help but ask, defend her from who? Who is attacking her? Is there a group of grumpy anti-aesthetic depressives who should I know about?
@@AlejandroGonzalez-ej4lpNowadays, I haven't seen any Rarity haters, but back when the fandom was massive, I do remember seeing a ton of people just being generally petty about her. People were nasty about who was best/worst pony back then lmao
@@jesterdays So, Rarity was only judged by a bunch of weirdos as much as any other character. It's not something I would call "extremely underrated."

I can actually relate to this, I’ve had this channel for six years, and I feel like often that it’s not good enough because I don’t hop on trends, and I upload my own things, my own stories even, but I feel sometimes, like because I didn’t do trends my channel, it’s going to fail. But I realize, I like the people who support me, even if it’s few.
I felt the same way about me and my channel. It kinda gave me that feel like I’m less than, but making “trendy” videos never filled that void inside me, regardless of the number of views.
Making the videos I care about with the people who already appreciate what I make means much more to me.

YOU GET IT!! I'm glad the message is finally being seen because ever since i first watched this episode, i immediately applied it to myself as an artist. Rarity has always inspired me in terms of creativity and shaping my art to what it is today and i hope she does the same to others as well. Her unique ideas and overall creativity has always been one of the most underrated feats of her and i'm glad that it's getting the recognition it deserve
Something I've always admired about Rarity is her creativity, expressing her true self, and learning how to be generous to her friends and in her artistic endeavors.

That is a fair point you make there. Though if I recall toward the end of the episode, I think she was annoyed at making an assembly line for the same dress. Correct me on that if I’m wrong though.
As a fashion designer and artist, I can say that fashion designers have their own goals and desire to be as hands on as much as possible with all of their works - some designers who love to illustrate and create designs may relegate the process to other assistants (if she has any) while other designers who loves the sewing or draping process etc may have the reverse process. Many independent designers though would be most likely to do the entire thing from start to finish adding her personal touch and will keep it that way as it IS what she loves doing regardless of the demand.
Another thing to note is that Rarity is a designer that focuses on haute couture, meaning personalized, one of a kind design (which the assembly line is turning her brand into a mass market line instead). This makes her involvement even more so integral as haute couture design requires her expertise and it's unlikely any assistant or help would be able to follow or assist in the creation itself to the way rarity does. Hope this explains a bit of the process!

@@heathersky333 Yeah. We even see in the show how even after "finishing" a design for a client/her friends, she actively changes and improves the designs on the spur of the moment.

This is why I like Rarity as a character so much. She loves addressing each pony as an individual case rather than just making a cookie-cutter design that is a “one size fits all” dress that’s popular or “trendy”.
I would absolutely love to meet Rarity or a person like that Irl, especially someone who is a fashion designer. I’d be so excited to look through their work and find something that really speaks to me personally, and that the metaphorical Rarity feels would fit me the best, with my own input of course.
I love helping my mom pick out her wardrobe and advising my friends based on what styles and colors look good on THEM, not on everyone else. It’s part of what makes my sense of style shine, and what I love when people compliment it. Saying “Yes, I did that.” Not “Oh that looks so IN!”

Rarity was and still is one of my all time favorite characters and a role model look up to as a fashion designer, illustrator and artist to this day. To find that I can find myself represented in a way as a creative without it being shallow while being passionate and feminine is such a rarity these days when the fashion industry hides a lot of its ugliness.
Rarity showcases the beauty and love for fashion design, the arts and creativity with her business savvy touch -- as a haute couture designer for sure she is one that would pioneer fashions and be a trend setter rather than any follower. Ultimately she also represents artists and designers like myself and many MANY more irl (we are just not that easy to find online!) Who wants to love what we create and love the creative process behind things while giving back and helping others feel and look good about themselves in fashion. After all, fashion is ultimately about self expression and being yourself 👌

Yes! I absolutely hated the episode where she spent hours making and then REMAKING the dresses for the gala for the rest of the mane 6 - like she put so much effort into her original designs, from individual taste, physical preferences (boots, frills, embellishments, fabric type, cut etc), the formality of the event, and comfort, only for the girls to complain and ask for complete redesigns (which if they'd just TOLD HER what they wanted in the first place instead of letting her have completely control and then whining none of them would have had to go through the tedious remaking process) which made it so rarity had no time left to make HER dress.
Tbh it was straight up selfish and a dick move on all of their parts (special shout out to my 2 favourite characters rainbow dash and twilight for being too vague and too highly specific respectively) and tbh that would have been a friendship-defining if not destroying experience for me 💅🏻
@@doctorwholover1012 I understand where you're coming from, but at least it was a nice episode teaching about how you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth and at least the main six did feel bad about what happened after they had their fashion show. Not to mention each of the mane 6 when they were complaining to rarity about their dresses and what they wanted to change is a different format of clients and what it's like dealing with them, which is something a lot of people in the creative field can relate to
I do agree with you. But also sometimes trends inspire you. Not to necessarily copy paste it, but maybe put your own spin on it with your own idea, punchline or style.

That’s a fair point. Some people do just want to be original, and some want to follow trends. We can be creative with trends, it’s just not natural for some people, like me.

Honestly I agree, trends helps with new ideas an stuff. The main problem I see, honestly, is that unless you are always following trends you have a huge hard time to grow in social media because of how the algorithm works. It sucks.
But of that's the case, you'll get inspired regardless of whether its a trend or not.
You'll just find your inspiration, if you have your own spark inside you already.
Honestly I don't really like trends. I mean yes they can be cool and interesting, but they are all just so cookie cutter. There is no individuality, no creativity! That's why I love Rarity so much, she's relatable. And I like your videos! It's always important to do what you want to do and make things that make you happy 😁 no matter what anyone else thinks.
I like the analogy you made there about trends being very cookie cutter, that pretty much sums it up. While it is possible to be creative in those bounds, it's much more difficult.
I never really liked trends myself. I just never got them you know. They just feel like something that will come and go and lose their meaning quickly.

I agree! I like to change things up to express myself. Trends can be nice sometimes but i usually just use them as a base to what i like.
Trends are only really fun when its really just the start of a tradition.
Like for bronies, "brohoof" was a permutation of a fistbump via a silly label, but its stuck around as a slightly silly but mostly wholesome greeting
I love that in the first few minutes of her making the dress over and over again that the wings of the dresses sometimes look deflated/aren't straight up and that the saturation in the visuals gets lower and lower. Very good visual story telling
TL;DR Rarity is an artist, not an industrialist, and it's a character strength of hers.
i love this episode because it also reminds you that if you dress the same as everyone else just because it's trendy, you're conforming and letting go of yourself with the shots of what the city looks like with every mare wearing the same dress
As a person from the gacha community, yes there are a lot of trends , yes barely any creativity.
There is a good side to setting trends , the level design for 2D Sonic games was a trend.
What would DK Country or Super Metroid have been without rolling over slopes?
The problem is trying to live up to expectations , which can happen even for a short time.
Everyone fails at being who they are expected to be , reality is not in anyone's mind.
That’s a fair statement. Mario and Sonic more or less set the trend for 2D platformers, which I don’t see anything wrong with.
It’s just like what you said where we try to live up to other’s expectations on meeting demands that could require us following the same trend.
What I hated was Sassy Saddles was clearly being selfish and desperate. Rarity was not the only person she ran out of business with the exact same strategy, and yet she didn't learn a damn thing until Rarity. I question why Rarity even hired her if she was part of so many failed projects. How was she hiding that? Sweeping it under the rug? Sounds hella suspicious to me.
I mean she clearly knows how to run a business or get the sales which is what Rarity was looking for, the failed ones must have been caused by other factors cause you can see she had no work etic what so ever or a very poor one, maybe because the trends died too as well and she couldn't move on, or she was just fired.
Yeah, this episode hurts so much. Especially to those of us who are both artists and use social media as a way of getting our artwork to be seen. Sure. There is an audience that will love your art. But often times, everyone is hopping from trend to trend. Making it incredibly difficult to gain any form of traction.
Heck. Most social media platforms *don’t* reward artists or anyone else with unique ideas of their own in general. Making it very easy to just throw in the towel and quit.
And it’s even more disheartening to people like me who have worked years to perfect their skills. And are thinking about either sharing their art for the first time or maybe turning it into a job of sorts. But more often than not, trends pay off more. Trends get recommended to more people than original ideas. And like Rarity. People get sick of it and want to just give up.
I probably would’ve had an audience by now if I didn’t have anxiety about sharing my art. Especially since 2015 with all of the witch hunting in the art community. And it’s had it’s long lasting negative effects on the art community. Which is worsened by social media’s treatment towards creatives.

I feel a bit similar. I finally got into creating an Instagram to shave my art about 3 or so years ago. Although I rarely upload, I am happy that my stuff has intrigued a couple of people who aren't my family, even if it isn't that many. frankly, I think it would make me very anxious if I had thousands of followers. I think creativity is on a heavy decline, but there are artists out there with some truly unique pieces/styles. It is very true that it's difficult to stand out when social apps are not entirely designed for that. Even if your art would take off from a trend, you'd basically doom yourself to keep following trends until you're done just enough that your original stuff can stand alone. And even then, who knows how many trends you'd have to participate in to even get to that level , yknow?
The guy who reloads random stuff like they're FPS weapons has had this recently- just serious burnout from people only demanding the reload videos
As someone who’s been in the gacha community since 2019, I can definitely say that trends have been killing the creativity of the community. Prior to tiktok gacha trends, gacha videos were mostly original (albeit with the occasional animation meme or hated child video, but even then there was a lot of creativity in those videos.) But now, a lot, and i mean a _lot_ of the community just resorts to trends. it’s the same thing over and over and over again, but with slightly different characters. Take for example, the “if you ___, you die.” trend. This trend plagued the community for months. And every time… it was the same thing. It was so repetitious. But the thing that annoys me is that the trend videos amass thousands to hundreds of thousands of views. Meanwhile, original gacha mini movies get maybe 100 views if they’re lucky. It’s sad, really.

I haven't been in the community for a few years now and this is one of the reasons I decided to leave (well that and suddenly there was so much drama near the middle of 2019 and after),the only creative things ended up being jumped at and turned into trends as well,music freaks as a whole series needs time to recover from that...
@@LycanMOON this! i absolutely hate it when a creator actually makes something creative for once, and then suddenly everyone is copying that idea, especially when the original creator stated that they dont want their work being used that way.
(i never actually paid much attention to the drama in the community, although, recently theres been so much drama with lentotally, wise wolf, nehema rahman etc. that i’ve just been avoiding the community altogether. it’s such a pain, im here for cringey mini movies and fan-content, not for 5 seconds of content and video after video on drama)
I almost got into the gacha community once, but it was so stupidly repetitive that I just couldn't enjoy it. I never found anything creative with original ideas, and the never-ending repeating of worn-out ideas just sucked all the fun out of it.
Wouldn't mind giving it another go if I actually found a good original creator. Got any recommendations?

- rosyclozy (her series ‘the music freaks’ is really good, it’s fully animated and has voice acting)
- seym_dna (she has a lot of original series and they’re pretty good. she also does miraculous ladybug videos sometimes.)
- beowulf (she’s a gacha vtuber, and she also makes gacha mods and stuff.)
- gacha vida (he generally posts animation memes, but they’re super high quality. though, he hasn’t posted in 3 years)

Wow. I can definitely say I’ve been there before. Creating the same stuff over and over can definitely be cumbersome. It’s sad that on platforms like TH-cam and TikTok, you’re rewarded for falling into trends and not (and sometimes punished) for pursuing your own creative ideas.
But I think creating work that you’re passionate about is very crucial to one’s creative journey. I find if I’m burnt out, taking time to create something meaningful to me reignites the spark and motivates me more to create for others.

I miss how the internet used to be. Not everyone was hanging out online like they are today 20 even 10 years ago. It used to be a place where people were sharing what THEY are passionate about. It was a hodgepodge of people being authentic, usually because their authentic selves were often rejected in their real lives. I remember the whole TH-camr boom in the 2010's; everyone suddenly wanted to be a TH-camr and make money off of it. To me, that's where it started going downhill.
Being a content creator became more about making money, then smartphones got smarter. Now, just about everyone has access to the internet, and just about everyone lives on the internet. So, people are trying to make a living off of being online. Therefore, following trends is the best way to keep up with the hustle. And I feel that mindset has trickle to the newer generation and they're just kinda doing it cause that's what they know, that's just apart of being on social media platforms (which is where people mostly spend their times nowadays, it used to be forum sites and people's rinky dink homemade websites, but those ain't too relevant much more).
The internet used to be like another wild west lol. But it's been taken and morphed into a factory where everything is monetized. Nothing wrong with wanting to make money, but I just don't like seeing everything revolve around cookie cutter trends, they're so empty. It makes the internet feel more empty than ever, even though it's packed with more people than ever.

You really hit the nail there. I've felt that way about people online when chasing trends. I don't feel like I actually get to know the person. I just feel like I see the same exact thing everywhere. It's pretty annoying imo.
Seeing someone be genuine in public is a rarity these days, no pun intended, but it makes it all the more enjoyable when you find those people.
Ever since i was a little girl, I’ve always loved Rarity. She was always my favourite because she was just so graceful and silly (and i may have had a crush on her as a kid 😭)
And now, as an artist myself, she speaks VOLUMES to me. The need to be creative, the feeling of someone directing you to do your art the way THEY want being so frustrating, she’s just so underrated 😭
My childhood best friend and I wanted matching face paintings so we got matching face paintings but when comparing we noticed they weren't actually matching face paintings so we confronted the lady about the face paintings and she said "because if I do the same thing over and over I may go insane" we both said fair and went our way
Yeah i don't like doing trends because there's a lack of creativity, and if I do participate in a trend I like to somewhat change it up. :3
In many ways with writers this works the same with changing your story to fit the standards of someone else. I began writing fanfics, and at first just wanted to tell a fun story, but a toxic friend I had talked me into changing characters saying they weren't diverse enough. I agreed, and at first was fine, but then she kept imposing her ideas onto my characters, but after we parted ways, I realized a lot of the changes I had made in order to please an audience I didn't even have because she told me I needed to, began to feel like completely different characters. I fell into the exact same trap that a lot of shows nowadays are, where I changed something that was good as it was, and ended up not liking it because they were no longer the characters whose story I wanted to tell, so I ended up reverting a lot of those ideas.
I really feel like this is a good comparison to how G4 was made and how G5 was made
G4 while at its goal was made to sell toys was in the beginning seasons creatively driven
G5 just feels like it's chasing trends and trying to be popular by doing what's popular rn. But it doesnt feel unique
That they had to change the name of the dress in question to the "Princess Dress" is meaningful to the history of the show. It's a Take That at the executive meddling that caused Queen Celestia to become Princess Celestia due to marketing concerns (assumption that little girls only want to play with princess stuff, trying to compete with the Disney princess brand, etc.)
MLP should be mandatory school curriculum at this point xD

I wouldn't just limit it to pony though, there's educational opportunities in a lot of places
@@Birdsflight44 of course. Id make a point saying not many modern cartoons would be as good for such things. But more pre2000 cartoons would have such content.
I loved Undergrads growing up prior to MLP but it wasnt for kids. Not in theme and message at least. I just stayed up late. Haha.
Ahh, this show bring back so many memories. It's really interesting how close it is to real life this episode is. The community I'm in lives on trends and channels will grow super quickly from doing it. I did that in the past and still do now in hope of catching up to people, but now a lot less. It felt like burnout to do something so quickly to cater to the masses and my other friends also felt the same way so they just do things that they wanted to do, even though they won't get much traction.
Super brave of them to, knowing what they already wanted. I guess after taking a long break to think. I'll have to choose between burning myself up from trends or taking it slow and easy. Haha, a hard choice. Good luck on your videos though! Inspiration helps people and some who didn't know they needed it. It's nice to reflect once in a while

I'm actually glad this episode aired when it did. Mostly I'm a writer of fanfiction and I try to branch out new ideas by adding in original characters, but over time following the same pattern as other people do really saps creativity down to nothingness. So I'm attempting to branch out with other ideas like video reviews to build up my confidence not just with my writing, but also my vocals and maybe change things up a notch in my life.

Even though I’ve watched this episodes a few times before. I just realized the showcase of how Rarity was able to engage more with her customers with the display of uniqueness, whereas when she was making the princess dress, she got zero audience feedback leading to no ideas for the future. Basically making something for sake of making it. Excellent showcase of on often overlooked message that a lot of people would benefit from today.
I have to say, I particularly like how the dress becomes more and more in the foreground/background in the episode instead of in the center, which dilutes the colours and further shows the monotony of it. Very good visual metaphors/symbolism
i agrée! i used to be a youtuber and i constantly followed trends because it got me views, eventually i got bored of it and leaned toward content i want to create instead and i got less views which made me less motivated, i wish i could tell myself i shouldn’t have cared about that so much and just done what i wanted to
This reminds me of my journey. I'm a writer and before I learned and applied all that "necessary" writing systems (such as Three Act Structure/Pinch Points/Climax/Want-Need/Save the Cat beats/Internal-External Conflict etc.) I was just doing fine with my story. People think those systems I wrote above are necessary but they are not; for I was way more creative with the flow of my book before learning and applying them (Because every "successful writer" was doing it.) Now all of my stories will flow the same.
That's the same with today's songs.
All start slow first, then rise, there is a chorus, back to the slow part, rise again, chorus again, then there is a bridge and lastly a more energetic version of the chorus.
It just flows the same... Why do people think the reason is behind Bohemian Rhapsody being considered the best song of all time? Because it doesn't follow a particular path, it doesn't have much structural repetitives so it has its own flow...

As someone has said before, (I think it was Silverquill) Rarity is more of a Tailor then a Fashion Designer, as she makes outfits for the individual, not the mass appeal/trends.
The nerve of Sassy saddles saying 'Sassy Saddle's Boutique' an i'm glad that Rarity finally placed her hoof down an corrected her that it wasn't her boutique because it isn't, then sassy saddles said 'what?! N-n-no, oh you can't rarity, i worked too hard to make this a success' Rarity ain't your employee, you are her employee. No wonder the others failed, you probably took over the other boutiques an made them fail by making the actual owners feel burnt out.
Honestly this is why i love to see peoples AU's! (Alternate Universes) Its Like A Trend With Their Own Unique Twist! It Helps Inspire While Also Having A Personal Thought About Someone Or Multiple Things In The Universe!
One of my favorites, in this one i actually feel identfied with Sassy Saddles. By the time she placed the 100 orders and she tried so hard to make the business a success, I knew she came from a failure.
When you fail, and try again, you want the next one to absolutely do well, so you usually go to the extreme you were lacking last time.
But as someone that works with different clients, I learned they all have different requirements, so I need to be more versatile in my work style.
Some want fast results and fix them later, some want a more progressive and result. It all depends on the customer.
You mentioned the format of mass production of the same product, aka assembly line production. While generally speaking this kind of production in the artistic industry, when it comes to individual artists, is usually done with certain types of commissions such as the ever so popular YCH (Your Character Here) pieces. However, the issue in this case is not just making the same thing over and over to chase a trend, thus eliminating production of art that speaks to us personally, but the fact that one person can only do so much. Assembly line production is intended for companies with hundreds upon thousands upon millions of employees, not for by the numbers personal commissions by a single artist.
Trends can kill creativity, sure. I've known people on this very platform who struggled to find themselves or make things they really wanted to because they were either only doing what their viewers wanted or, in more recent years, having to appeal to the mistake that is the TH-cam algorithm. But in the words of an anon in "What I Learned This Time", "Mass production is the death of creativity!"
I feel like this analysis is flattening the message of the episode, which is surprisingly complex. I love these clips because there is a genuine conflict in them. Rarity is getting tired of having to fulfill the same orders over and over and essentially mass-produce dresses, but the customers could not be happier - so many ponies seem to be having a great time when the same oddly-specific dress is available to everybody and anybody and anybody can just come buy the dress they want, maybe even that one courageous male stage-performer pony out there.
this story comes across a bit more like society is changing and creating different kinds of businesses than before. there used to be individual artisans and now there is mass production. and Rarity isn't ready for the change. she fit well into a smaller town but the new city environment is disorienting because the city wants factories with unskilled workers but Rarity has always been more of a designer.
and there isn't much of anything wrong with that. in theory, there would be plenty of opportunity for Rarity to continue doing fashion design. she has just become confused by the fact that she is now in an environment that thrives on having a lot of "mere laborers" or machines. so, what would basically need to happen is they find some other pony or creature they can pay to sew dresses all day, and Rarity could think hard about what design to mobilize all the sewing creatures to make at the next shop or for the next month (we all know fashion designs rotate before long).
this episode seems like it's just about creativity or fads or something, but it really ends up being weirdly a story about social classes. there used to be an artisan class but then with the creation of cities artisans became replaced by corporations and the proletariat, leaving many people today just as confused as Rarity because nobody has explained this to them. and what to do about that does not have an easy answer. to move old-style artisans into the proletariat requires thinking hard about how to put them into newly-forming structures. if artisans quit the process like Rarity did they tear apart the process of forming new industries and cities itself, and that's not necessarily good. even on the show many of the characters love living in cities.
so it's quite a complex calculation of whether you should simply turn around and "make what you want" or "be yourself". it's not entirely an individual's own decision. it's the decision of a whole group of people forming a town or part of a city.
even with TH-cam, the tension that exists between an artisanal style of production and people fitting themselves into a designated "job" that everybody seems to need is actually a weakness in TH-cam's design. the way TH-cam does not have any real structure to it puts a lot of strain on creators and leaves them in confusion, while it _should_ be fully possible to work through that confusion just the way I showed with Rarity "accepting the proletariat". the analogy breaks down at a certain point because creating videos is not actually very analogous to manufacturing physical products like in this MLP episode. but either way, the way to properly solve this problem for everyone involves realizing that if we want to create stable jobs or stable viewership we actually have to order everyone into stable structures that fit together in particular ways in order to create communities.
sidenote? I love this episode even if it doesn't perfectly teach people Marxism. I love how casually some episodes of this show can get into such a complex topic, and get it at least mostly correct, and make it fun.
Funny fact: Rarity secretery is inspired by Emily in the movie the devil wears prada.
Love that this episode dont really have an antagonist, Sassy is a busisnes mare and make a good work selling, she is not bad with Rarity, she only know what the ponis of canterlot are looking for, and try to given to them. Rarity does´t know what they want, but what they need it, important difference.
God I really relate to this. As an artist who mainly does digital art, I’ve had MANY instances like this where worrying about what I post and worrying about numbers and algorithms and such have just killed my creative juices. I have been relearning in recent years though to draw for me and draw what I WANT to draw, but I still have some instances like this I admit. But still, this is very true and we should stick with whatever makes us happy! Life is hard as it is already, and we need our own outlets where we can just be ourselves!

This episode just really give me a lot more inspiration to just continue the kind of Channel that I want to have. A lot of people in the community just keep making trends because it's trends and barely any of it have efforts in it. I prefer my self doing this trends if it's already outdated and if it actually something that I like but most of the time they aren't so yeah. Whenever I make a video I usually play her song "Rules of Rarity" to keep me be more passionate to make the actual video that I like and all.
That's awesome! Definitely, just keep making what you want to make. I tried chasing trends, and it only made me depressed. Making meaningful content really brings my spirits up, and I'm glad to see it has the same effect on you and many others.

This reminded me of the first winners of the Netflix show Next In Fashion. The winner was already successful but because of that she was forced to make basic clothes and wasn't able to show her creativity anymore which is why she went on the show in order to make clothes she actually enjoyed.

This episode remains in my top 10 all time favorites as it spoke to me as a fellow designer, illustrator and artist who adores rarity -- canterlot boutique aired at a crucial time during my fashion design runway graduation and I was undergoing a creative dilemma between my vision and what people want to see. This episode truly helped save me in those days, and I'm forever grateful to it ❤
It's also fun to see more of the artistry and technicals in fashion design explored beyond with the marketing aspects! Though I bet people who aren't into fashion would not pick up certain fashion market distinctions, branding and such, because a lot of the questions people bring up regarding the approach in fashion design vs fashion marketing, trends and distinction of target markets would have been obvious.
Sassy wanted to turn what's basically a haute couture specialty designer line into a mass market fashion line which is just the exact opposite of rarity's designer focus. When seen that way... For sure nothing will work out and it depresses every creative and artist to be put in that spot!
trends are the basis for creativity we mostly build up on what we already know, if you can express yourself better in media analysis than in news it might just be because news are not very subjective subject

I totally relate. In 2021, I made a whole bunch of demixes of Pokemon Gold/Silver's music, justifiably confident I could replicate the style of the previous Pokemon generation. On reflection, the first few tracks like Azalea Town and Route 26 really did capture that style the best, but the rest were only just good.
Unfortunately that seemed to catch on WAY more than my later videos: the Pokemon Ray/Shade music and GSC style MLP covers. Every comment I get on the older videos is something I kinda dread now, not only because of my inferior coding skills I had compared to today, but also because it's not something that'll leave me satisfied anymore. When I feel like making something, I make it, and that's something I feel good about. Even now, the GSC style MLP covers would've been on the way out if I *only* did music and assembly.
Just a reminder folks, it's not just quality vs. quantity where your work will speak for itself, but also soul vs. reach.
Look at modern micro trends. Increasingly, people are focused about keeping up with the next micro trend instead of developing their own sense of style
Yeah, that’s a big reason why I hate trendy things. I think a big reason why the general masses of people hop on a trend is because people want to try to fit in, even if the trend is something they don’t like.

I may not be a fan of this show, in all honesty I rarely (if ever) watch it. But they tend to give out some really life lessons that can stick with viewers till the credits roll. I'll give the show credit.
One of the reasons I love MLP so much is that it really touches on things that can be applied to people of every age.

Since some people have been relating to this episodes message, I’d like to say that I too had a moment where I related to this message. Last year I decided to give myself a challenge since it was my birthday month(July), I would draw one of my favorite ocs with different characters for every day until the end of the month. The idea in theory worked out fairly well for the first few days! But after some more days I started to procrastinate and not do the drawing for that day until the point I felt the need to rush and make up for the lost drawings. This led to the decision to shorten the amount of days of the challenge to just 28 days(aka my birthday). And don’t worry I wasn’t pressured to do this or anything it was something I personally wanted to push myself to do, but after a little bit I became aware and questioned if the reason I kept procrastinating was because I was getting tired of drawing the same exact character over and over again, sure it was with a different character each drawing but after a few days and especially when I rushed to get more then one done to make up for the days I procrastinated I simply couldn’t get over it, however I pulled through and managed to complete my challenge in my own way. All this to say I definitely felt the message that while it didn’t kill my creativity it did become tiring to draw the same thing over and over again. Glad I watched this video and thank you for sharing it, hope that whatever video you make in the future no matter what the topic is something you enjoy 😁
As a creative, it is really hard to make part of a project that involves repeating the same detail over and over. If I had to make the same *project* over and over, it would be absolutely soul-crushing.

This is the first time I’ve come across your videos. This spoke to me so much… on TH-cam (before kinda moving to Instagram where I usually am nowadays) I was trying to find something that not only I liked but could share with the rest of the world. But got burned out because I lost subscribers and people wanted to see the same kind of video over and over again. (Gacha studio/gacha world videos) I didn’t like making those videos as much anymore because I’d left the fandom. And whenever I tried to post something new, no one liked it. So in a last act I unlisted all of my gacha videos. Sure it was drastic but it was for my sake. I wanted to do what I wanted, to make what I wanted. And this video showed that very well. So thank you❤

This is a Topic I have been seeing out of all things The Music I listen to. So long story short I like Nerdcore music (Music based on Nerdy things) and Lastly 3 of my favorite artist have came out saying they are not going after the Trends anymore people like Rustage Fabvl and DizzyEight are doing the music they want to make. I have a friend who has a similar but opposite problem with music. She has this one song that I absolutely love and I made that clear to her (I love all the music she makes, the one I'm referring to isn't even my favorite). But sometimes she'll find herself making a new song with a melody similar to the song. I don't have much of an issue with it, but she'll often say "I'll work on this more until it sounds more unique".
I love this take on the episode and the topic of trends as a whole. I enjoy that you talked about Sassy and Rarity having different visions and not that one was objectively better than the other, the very fact is that their mindsets and work ethics appeal to different ponies. Just like Rarity's dresses !
This really does affect many, MANY forms, fashion DEFINATELY has a huge issue with trends nd killing creativity as a result. But it may also affect writers, artists, maybe even movies, as they may get so caught up and worried about what the public will think, they instead choose to follow a trend instead of doing what comes naturally for them.
Artists may feel pressured into making fanart about a big form of media in that time because it'll offer more chances for attention, writers may stick to a generic story (especially with romances) and the story becomes empty as a result, and movies are made with much, MUCH work, but the end product can be shown as pandering if done so to aim at a specific audience.
I intend to be a writer with complex concepts, ideas, and themes regarding personal struggles and struggles of those close to me, if I had to worry about how popular it will be instead of if I liked it or not, I'd be too miserable, and I really can't live like that, I've worried about how others would respond to anything I did or made, writing is one of the few things I feel happy about and genuinely steer away from my people-pleasing tendencies. I want characters to have substance, I want people to care WHO they are, not whether or not they're hot, stereotypical, or end with a hunk for some self-insert. Make characters and plot first, THEN expand on those aspects!
As an artist, I do tend to feel some pressure with following art trends, but overall don't get to them if I just...don't care for them. My brain cannot physically or mentally make something I have no passion in, and if I do, it just...does not look great.
This episode was a GREAT lesson for creative youths for their potential future, and creative adults needing reassurance as to why their passion and creativity matters, and what trends you force yourself to follow will physically exhaust you, and there is no shame in going back to experimenting, and going back to doing things you enjoyed, instead of putting up with misery just because you've gained fame as a result, because by the end of the day...what is the point of popularity if you are not able to enjoy it and look over how you got there with pride?
As a female writer who tries to made epic fantasy and other subgenres without put romance in first place, this is unfortunately, true. Readers care most about if the story has a romantic lead and ships more than complex world or a good magic system, cof, cof, ACOTAR

this episode is very relatable lol I once tried to make a multimedia brand I had this manager who acted just like the one in this episode and making content for the brand was not fun anymore so I stopped and left the brand just for him
I feel like Make your Mark is just trending on Friendship is Magic and not trying to be its own version of My Little Pony.
Friendship is Magic was known as Generation 4 (Gen 4) in the My Little Pony franchise. That makes Make your Mark Gen 5 in the franchise. There was 3 Generation of My Little Pony before Friendship is Magic. Gen 4 was so well written that My Little Pony finally got a HUGE fan base that wasn't just little girls. But it is because of that popularity that Make your Mark isn't trying to solely be its own My Little Pony story. It is trying to be a continuation of Gen 4, while also trying or claiming to be its own thing. By doing that, Gen 5 is stuck in the shadow of Gen 4 while at the same time is ruining what made Gen 4 so special.
At least... this is just my opinion.
I needed to hear this! 🌻 As a artist I feel pressure to release as much as possible and that's created stress. I created deadlines for certian things to get done and when and while it's created a structure, it's also created a cage....
It can be hard to know how to please your audience while keeping your mental health in check. I will admit that I sometimes feel some pressure here and there to get a video out in a timely manner, but I just remind myself that it's not worth the stress.

It's also important that trends can die out. And many things aren't considered trends, either. It depends on what it is. I do something called diamond art painting, something a lot of people are doing, and it's still going out strong, so I wouldn't call it a trend. I don't personally try to follow trends because I'm always late for it, and that I'm not interested in the trend others are into.
This was kinda of one of the main reasons why I wanted to start writing. I’ve seen a lot of similar trends and troupes which is fine but I wanted to do something a little different. Happy endings are everywhere and I can’t find a book where I will cry my eyes out with other troupes and genres I like. Happy endings, great yea but I also want to cry my eyes out.

I won’t get into the details but I’ve been writing some stuff for a fandom I felt obligated to take part in, and keep at it because it’s what people want right now, but I burnt out so fast.

I remember feeling like that too. One example is Fortnite. No shame in being a fan of the game, it just isn't for me. I tried playing it a couple times, and even though it's very popular, I personally don't find it entertaining, but that's okay.

Bruh I can relate. I have a TH-cam channel but I rarely upload videos, but back then, I uploaded whatever I wanted until this video I made blew up. It was good, but then I felt pressured to make content similar to it, which made me uninterested in my channel.

I totally understand this. And a warning to people who hop on trends, you should also consider the audience that you are attracting to your account! If you make a trendy post about characters that you dont really like, your account will end up attracting people who like those characters regardless. If you gain a following that does not fit you as a person much at all, you might actually end up getting hate instead of the support you needed as an artist. Think about this: You post art for a fandom that doesnt really rub you right for 4 months, and gain 4k followers. That seems really cool right? 4k followers! But if that fandom was a really bad fit for you, there will 100% be some kind of backlash at some point when u start posting in another fandom, or posting OC content, or whatever it is u want to post.
I understand all of this.When i have my own channel ,i tried to make my own trend ,ideas ,but the view are always low .So i tried to follow the trend , that are populars ,but sometimes i still wanted to make my own ideas😢😅❤
I feel the same way about my videos. My very small audience only wants one thing, and when I do something else they don't really care.
But for the 4th birthday of my series (which is what they ask for), I really felt inspired, and made 3 videos (the third one releasing a few days after the birth date).
These three videos were part of the biggest videos I made (and the third one literally is the biggest). They tied together a lot of plot points that were loosely connected on purpose waiting for that moment.
They concluded two character arcs, one of which started 4 years ago when the series started, so this was a big deal.
It ended the first era of this series and now we're onto a new one. But there's just one thing. If the first video had pretty decent results, the other two... not so much.
My biggest videos ever and of what they ask me the most, remember ? They didn't seem to care that much, even though I put everything I had in these videos.
But on a happier note, I may have found something else outside of my series that they like. Finally.
One thing that I haven't seen mentioned is that it's not just Rairity's creativity being killed but also the customers.
Is it creative to wear the exact same thing as every single other pony? At what point does it start to become a uniform of sorts? I have to wear this to not stand out, I have to wear this to not get bullied or exiled. Shit like that.
At one point when they showed the ponys on the street every single pony was wearing the dress, how does that say anything about you at all besides the fact that you look the exact same as every other person?
In fact for ponys in particular I'd say wearing the exact same thing as everyone else makes you stand out less! Because they all have unique hair and colors but with the dress everything else stands out less.
I didn't know my childhood show has life lessons and i didn't know the exist but oh well at least i know💁♀️

Yeah trends can be more harmful than helpful. My mother for example wants that I stay updated on the trends to know what people actually wear currently a lot or what is often seen. But I have no problem with just clothing myself with something I feel comfortable and normalinstead of what many people wear for whatever reason. It is more important for me to dress me in order to present myself or with clothes I genuinly like. I know my mother means it well and wants that I am mre like but I prefer my indivudality more than some social norm which has nothing to do about who you are.
i’ve never been a fan of trends or following something simply because it’s “in” or “popular”. sometimes i’ll like a trend but it’s because it’s something that genuinely speaks to me and i’ll take it further and put my own spin on it, but i fully reject the idea of liking something purely to fit in, at least for myself.
I feel like she would do well in designing for runway models, the dress isnt always the same and theres always something different, variety.
