It's pathetic because when Brent was manager he stupidly believed Gareth actually respected him. Here Gareth proves he was nothing more than a duplicitous worm all along. They really turned up the pathos for that Christmas special as Brent realizes what a pitiful figure he is.
This shows the difference between the UK office and the US office. The US show made the boss a lovable goofball; when things start to get a little cringey they always soften the blow. The UK show made the boss deeply pathetic, and they lean into the cringe mercilessly.

US version 9 seasons, 201 episodes, whereas British went for 12 episodes and 2/3 specials. (I don't think the 2013 one counts). Either way massive difference, in the UK one Tim and Dawn finally kiss at the end, whereas their American counterparts get married halfway through. I dunno, personally I like how we're left to draw our own conclusions, I bet if you asked there'd be load of people who said, 'Yeah, I bet they're still proper happily married, sending the kids off to uni and deciding what they'll do when they retire' and other people that are totally addament they'd only last a few months and realise they were actually really incompatible.

Im Scottish and absolutely love Steve carrel and the American version John kranski and rain Wilson are two of my favourites plus pretty much all the cast are brilliant but there's something about Ricky's office that just hits different and even thou it doesn't have the longevity i prefer it 🫶🫶absolutely top notch and up there with the best 👍
For any one who doesn't know, this is actually funnier because Gervais irl was part of a band for a couple of years, it had one semi-hit that did break the top 100, but they never broke the top 50 and the band fizzled out soon faster. Also, as part of a 2013 charity benefit Gervais in his character as David Brent did actually produce a collaborative single with UK artist Doc Brown titled 'Equality Street', and I can't remember if it was chart rated but it's actually not bad, the song has a catchy ring to it and "David Brent's" vocals are good enough that it makes you appreciate Gervais' musical background.
