Open valve clearence to 0.25mm on intake and 0.30-0.40mm on exhaust, because valves tighten up during first 1-5tkm causing valves to have too small clearence, casuing oil film to be wiped from camshafts causing camshaft failures... Best Regards!
I’ve got a 2019 790 Adventure with 18000+ miles on it. I bought it brand new and ride it almost every day. No cam issues. Only thing to ever go wrong was a crankshaft position sensor (aka pulse generator aka crankshaft speed sensor -KTM calls it a couple different things) last month. Found one on eBay for $16.50. Took me an hour to fix it. It’s been a great bike. I don’t ride like a mad man but I commute on it a lot on interstate and in town. I hit the trails when I get a chance. Again, I haven’t had any major issues. I change the oil on schedule on my own and spray off the bike when it’s filthy and lube the chain every once in a while. So many people dog KTM for being unreliable but it’s been plenty reliable and cheap to maintain in my personal experience.
By the way, I've an 890 R, 15000km, no problem at all. Ok I think I went once or twice in red rpm, otherwise I cruise but in Europe lot of TET, equivalent your TAT. No issues so far. I've 2 friends, same bikes, ex hard Enduro riders, with some oil leaking... Not camshafts. They are quite often in red... Ready to race perhaps, but needed lot more maintenance if race
I have a 2020 790 R, at 13k miles, new cams. The cams installed are 890. Ktm confirmed that 2024 890 are good. Well,,, I will find out after another 15k miles 😅
I don’t have an 790, but an 2022 890 adventure. Long trips on and off road. Have now passed 18000 miles with zero problem and by far the most fun bike I ever owned.
"Eh... it is what it is because I get to go fast." Ben, you just summed up perfectly why I keep buying KTM's! Great review! The 790 is an amazing value.
@BigRockMoto Do you think it will last in the long run though? You guys don’t keep these bikes long enough for it to affect you. I really want one but am hesitant. Would really like to have it long term.
I've ridden the original 790 AR, 890AR, 890 Rally etc. They are super fun bikes when they are working. Just like how much I loved my 990 and 690, I just never trusted them. My T7 I trust, and in 65,000 miles I have never once questioned if it was going to start.
I own a 2020 790 R. I did have the recalls completed, rear brake cable and front master cylinder spring. Beyond that, i have had zero problems. I have 12k miles on the odometer. 4k of that is off road on gravel, logging roads, farms, and the Appalachian Mountains. I am also a motorcycle mechanic. This bike is easy to work on and maintain. Most importantly, you dont need a factory diagnostic device to reset any maintenance. It is all owner capable. On most new bikes like BMW, triumph and etc., you can do you maintenance, but you can not reset the service light. I know because when customers cant get their bikes into a dealer and come to our shop, we complete the maintenance. I hate turning over a completely serviced bike to a customer with the engine light on. Dont believe everything on the internet.
I just ticked 4,000 miles on my Norden 901 (purchased in January), and they’ve nearly all been dirt and off-road. I’ve always been a 25+year Honda/BMW guy, and 8 months in, I can say I’m blown away by the offroad performance. There’s simply not a comparison on that front. I’m eyes wide open on historical issues, but I have a great relationship with my dealer, and so far under regular maintenance and checking everything regularly, it’s been flawless. Time will tell, but in pure performance/weight/center of gravity terms, nothing else comes close to KTM (and Husky).
HIs summary at the end is the best exposition on the ownership of these KTM twins I have every heard. My friend has an older 790, totally reliable and gets up to 25km/litre on easy terrain plus he always goes on solo trips, nothing too hard though. He has a DR650 so knows about total reliability. As for me, a KtM 500 and 690 owner towards the end of a 50+ year riding career, I would not buy one of their twins for all the reasons he mentioned. I don't want to have a breakdown on a ride ( I often ride solo on quiet roads) or risk having camshafts wear out prematurely although I would love the ride comfort/position and highway manners. I also don't believe that unreliability is inevitable with class leading performance. It must be a choice by the company to cut corners in many aspects of design and construction in pursuit of market share. I chose the 500 as my adventure bike due to the overwhelming positive stories regarding the reliability of the engines since around 2013 and nothing has changed my view. My choice is lightest weight, best suspension and handling and power and I forego road comfort and long distance riding. To each their own, I'm glad he is loving his bike.
Very honest and much appreciated review I also was, still am a Honda lover, though I rented a KTM 790 adventure in Spain, to explore the area around Valencia. Did so for almost 2 weeks, mainly on paved roads, though I was so impressed by its weight, better said lake of it and it's power at low revs, stability and precious cornering; its as you saying; this bike is given its rider a lot of confidence. So same as in your case, stepped over the came shaft issue, while the fun with this bike it beyond I experienced ever before. I'm living in Rotterdam in the Netherlands (Europe), off road is hardly available, though also in the city the bike has a big edge over many others: instant power, very easy to maneuver threw traffic, great comfortable seating position, not too much heat producing, able to see over cars though also allowing for riding at a slower comfortable pace and with the cruise control able to avoid nasty speed tickets. Surely I'm going abroad to ride a bit off road and on the mountain roads soon. My Honda VFR is still a king in making many highway miles easily and fast, never selling it (Its a 1991 still in very good condition, only failing once /one coil went bad, in 33 years) though taking the KTM sure this will bring way more fun, in greater comfort, perhaps a little slower (on the highway) though at destination providing all the options available which I never considered before.
Great review!! I’m convinced if ktm just improved the reliability of the 790/890 engines instead of releasing new models every couple years these bikes would absolutely dominate the adv market. I recently traded my 890AdvR with the upgraded 270mm Xplor pro sus in for a 1290 SAR. I loved that bike!! They’re the best adv in the world hands down…when they don’t have camshaft problems. At36000kms mine didn’t luckily. But the way ktm have/have not handled the situation they created has really turned me off. I chose the 1290 because it was discounted, came with a 4yr warranty and the best trade in offers I got was with ktm dealers. Love the 1290 though and it’s still a blast off road with no bird on, but any slow techy stuff and you really feel the weight difference. God the power is addictive, but the 890 was easily fast enough on the road/highway, had better fuel range and was way more fun off road.
Yes, I'm one of those KTM rider from way back. All dirt until my 2021 890R. I have 33,000 miles on it without any issues at all. Still love it! I've done 2 BDR's and lots of hard dirt and camping with it. I'm just sorry to hear so many people have had issues. Good video Ben on why we get hooked on them!
@@atticushexcel9567The haters are not full of shit. I’m sorry you bought a ticking time bomb. Hopefully the dealer gives you a juice box and cookie when they replace your cam shaft
6k plus on my ‘23R so far and it’s been a blast. Minor niggles are a leak by coolant tank (not the typical lower hose clamp) , cruise control stopped working, front brake master cylinder weeps. I bought a side stand switch bypass because my boots hit the side stand when standing off road causing the engine to cut out. The headlight was shooting low and I had to take apart the front cowl to access the adjuster - it was assembled incorrectly so the adjuster wasn’t accessible thru the hole but clocked at 3 o’clock. I’ve added the usual bits - pegs, handguards, gps mount, racks, levers, rally seat , etc to personalize it. I’m on my 3rd set on tires - I weigh 265 so they tend to grind down faster. I love the beast and it’s way better off road compared to my old 990.
One great feature is the tubeless rims. Flat repair without removing wheels is awesome. It also gets great gas mileage and has a huge range. The air filter holder can be put on backwards and dust will leak past the air filter(bad design - Ktm you can do better!). It is not pretty, but it is so tough. I have crashed mine a bunch and I pick it up and off we go. I've got 33.5k flawless miles on my 2019 790R (40+% dirt) and think it is amazing. 100k miles here we come.
I have a 2020 KTM 790 Adventure S and just turned 20,000 miles. Luckily i have had zero issues with mine. I've ridden several other mid-sized adventure bikes and have the feel of the KTM. I guess it's easy to be a fan boy when you own one, had zero issues and grin ear to ear every ride
Just a note about that Facebook group, I joined it to see if the MY23-24 was affected and its obvious that many of the commenters doesn't own or haven't owned a KTM, they just dislike the brand. The most common posts are from people asking questions rather than reports on the issue. People with a bad outlook gets highly upvoted, those with a positive outlook gets the laughing emoji. It's an echo chamber united by hate for the brand rather than facts. That's not to say people haven't been affected, or what you say in the video is wrong. But ironically, the group made me less worried and made me realize that just like me and my friends with KTMs, the silent majority are happily riding these fun machines without problems.
I'm not saying it's a reliable source or anything. Just saying the fact that it exists means that the problem is at least somewhat common. But yes, there are a lot of haters in there.
Haters or not, perrier deserve all the hate it gets. Is all greed, corporate games , total lack of responsibility. They know very well they are in deep s... With this issue so they try to do some damage control and it's laughable to see their "effort". All just to avoid responsibility and paying for own mistake
Well, I don’t own a KTM but I’m in that group because I was seriously considering buying one [ultimately abandoned that idea]. I also happen to have two friends who have already replaced their camshafts on their 790s, and none of them is in that group. What does that tell you? 😂
Great job Ben. I think this 790 came out slightly later than the Transalp. I looked at a 23 KTM 890 to replace my Africa Twin. But I went with the Transalp. Glad I did because I know the guy who bought that 890 and it’s been in the shop for over a month. He was so frustrated he just bought a 2024 AT. I agree with you 100 percent that performance wise KTM is the best. But to me the reliability issue was too much to overlook. Especially since I take a few multi day trips a year and want to trust my bike when I’m in the middle of nowhere Arizona. So reliability to me was more important than performance.
Exactly, that's why I always repeat, ktms are toys, not adventure bikes. Sure they lot of fun and best performance, but what's the point of having adv bike that you can't trust? There's already many things that can go wrong and u have to worry about on multi-day travels like flat tires, lost gear, injury etc... why add stress of bike not even startin up ; And if u don't plan to ride long distances and just play around local tracks then why even bother with adv, just get stupid enduro bike it's at least easier to repair :D therefore killing whole point of existence of 790 imo
Hi, I have the 2023 890 adventure (I bought it from Ian Big Rock Moto) I already have 11,000 miles, two trips to Baja, commute daily and I have not had a single problem I just kove this bike.
As a previous owner of a KTM and current owner of a Husqvarna I'd say it was a fair and honest review. I just hope you keep it around awhile and put more miles on it so maybe we can see a 5,000 and 10.000 mile reviews. Thanks.
I've put almost 12,000miles on my '23 standard 890 Adv model. Agree w/ your comments on the 790, pretty much same/same for me. In 12k miles these are the problems I've had: 1) The front rim won't hold air w/o a tube - I use a HD tube.... 2) One time (only once) I got a weird thing where the dash blinker indicators were flashing and wouldn't turn off. Cycled key off/on, problem went away 3) One time (only once) the kick stand was up, but bike died when put in gear as if it were down. Restarted several times, problem repeated each time. Cycled key off/on, problem went away. 4) about 6 times the cruise control won't work (it comes on, just won't accept a set speed). Cycle key off/on, problem goes away. The little electrical gremlins are aggravating, but not that bad. I'm riding on the trailmax raids and find this thing rips on & off road. Get my annual svc done at dealer, buy oil change kit and do it myself about 1/2 way through the svc cycle - 9300 miles is too long for an oil change IMO.
@@atticushexcel9567 I appreciate the reply. The rim quit holding air on a trip to Big Bend, slow leak became a fast leak (about 8 air refills to make ~80 miles back to Alpine. The one man motorcycle shop there hadn't dealt with this issue before, so I just got him to pop the valve stem and put a HD tube in. I agree, it could be fixed, but I'm probably too lazy to get it done!
I just got a 790 in March no problems so far , I did have the light issue and did the same as you ( cycled the the key) I also had an issue with the cruise control, it would disengage but I couldn't get it to shut off with the switch ( the symbol would just stay lit up on the computer screen) but cycling the key removed it , none of this stuff has happened since
Hello. Beginning 2024, I travelled through the silk road during 4 months (total 30'000km) with a new KTM 790 adv model 2024. The bike had 5000km when i left my country. It is really the best bike to ride ...when the bike is agree to ride !!!! I had so many issues...... 2 times right fork leaking, changing the crankshaft position sensor in Almaty (KTM Kazakhstan), many Control traction issues and engine stopped. I needed 4 times a tow truck (for a total of 1800km). When i turned back at home the lambda sensor burnt andthe engine was running in degraded mode. Issues are not fun but manageable in USA or Europe but it is not the same story when you travel worldwide in remote areas. Never again KTM
I’ve got 35,000km on my 2020 790. I’ve had to replace the cams , thermostat and map sensor. Disappointing for sure but still love riding it. Every time I think of getting something else I just go for a ride. Instantly I decide to keep it for another season.

Welcome to the club, hard to get past the fun aspect. I have ridden bikes for forty years and no bike has ever been close in terms of the smiles the 790/890 can generate. The cams issue is actually a design flaw in the head that means one end of the cams gets less oil, you notice they only have wear on one end when they fail which cannot be a hardening issue.
I had a '23 890 s. Everything you said about your 790 is true for that bike too. Incredibly fun, powerful, capable, etc. If I had room for more than 1 bike, I would have kept it, but the little things that kept breaking just pissed me off too much. 2 rear brake light switches, a valve cover gasket, intermittent "turn signal errors", cruise control that worked only when it wanted to, and screws cross threaded from the factory - all kept my ownership down to 6k miles. If ever I get room for more bikes, I will buy a motorcycle lift, and another KTM 890/790
Cams and thermostat $1000. Map sensor was $600 because I had the dealer troubleshoot the fault code for me. Time? Not sure, I enjoy wrenching so never keep track.
Great review Ben, concise and informative. The KTM proposition is akin to jumping into a glacier fed lake on a hot day. You know it’s going to feel great after you do it but it takes serious commitment and thought before the plunge:) I have in excess of 4000 miles of mixed riding on mine now……no issues and it is a hoot. Time will tell, but in the mean time I’m going to continue to enjoy its exciting personality. You do need to keep an eye on the air box if you’re in heavy dust conditions. Thanks for the video and keep us posted👍
8000+ km so far on the new KTM 790 Adventure and absolutely love it !!! It’s very comfortable for all types of riding: 800 km highway in a day, short trips to the bakery, mountain twisties, dirt roads, … More than enough torque and power, perfect clutch, excellent brakes, super agile, super stable (at all speeds: from slow walking speed to very high speed), excellent suspension and excellent tyres. Driving behaviour is fantastic, it is easy to ride and you always feel like you’re in total control. You are absolutely right about having to restrain yourself to not ride like an ***h*l*…the motorcycle lets you do it with ease. This motorcyccle likes fast cornering and playfull riding (with a nice roar if you want it to), as well as calm cruising (with a sweet humming sound). With the (optional) windscreen spoiler the wind protection is excellent. Very good (optional) panniers with a lot of space make it very suitable for travelling. The TFT display is fantastic and the excellent switch gear guides you through the user friendly interface with ease. The (optional) cruise control is perfect. This motorcycle also has tons of very useful electronic safety features (with optional MSR). Vision at night with the (optional) auxiliary lights is very good. Excellent rear view mirrors. I am quite new at motorcycle riding (started on 125 cc Fantic Caballero Scrambler in april 2024) and I gained quite a lot of experience in a short time: 7500 km on the scrambler in ten months, motorcycle riding school on Yamaha MT07, 8000+ km on the KTM in the past six months and some occasional test rides (Triumph 400x, Honda CB 500x, BMW F900 GSA, BMW R 1250 R, BMW K1600 GT, HD Road Glide, BMW R18 B). This motorcycle is certainly the best (for me anyway, everbody is different) I have experienced so far. My dream collection is (already there for one third 🎉): KTM 790 adventure Fantic 125 cc Caballero BMW R18

did you like 790ADV more than F900 GSA? I've ridden GSA and to me it seems like a perfect tarmac adventure bike, nice torque, very stable (coz 246kg weight) and comfortable. Now wondering if I should get 790ADV
You are so right, I didn't want to purchase a KTM, i didn't want to purchase a 790, i didn't trust the Brand but I had an opportunity to purchase a brand new one with a big discount and i said to myself whatever reliability issue i may have it is already covered by the discount. I have roughly 1000 miles on my KTM and every time i drive it i am in love with it. Even in heavy traffic, it is ok thanks to the low center of gravity. Wether you are offroad, in corners or on the highway, it is fun and confidence inspiring. There are some stupid things like the fuel gauge or the non adjustable suspension but it doesn't change the fact she is super fun. I agree 100% with your video. I suspect too that reliability can be vastly improved if you don't overpush your bike as KTM are pushed to the max. unlike Japanese which are always with a huge safety margin. The difficulty is there is that she loves to be driven to the max. and it is difficult to drive conservative,.
I have 24,700 miles on my KTM 890R riding lots of dirt and BDRs. The bike has been rock solid with no issues. I love the bike and would purchase it again. Most but not all of the camshaft issues were in pre-2021 models. No worries here about KTM reliability.
At least you can RIDE it! Not much “value” in the KTM when it’s in the shop and waiting an eternity for it to be fixed…again…and KTM dodging liability.
@@derache123 Yeahhhhhh... I don't know about the whole BMW being reliable part... Both BMW cars and bikes always were and always will be both expensive to buy and expensive to maintain aka. unreliable... The ONLY and I repeat the ONLY exceptions are the old F650 GS, the older K1600 GT and GTL models and the 2004-2012 R1200 GS/GSA, which are on par with Japanese bikes when it comes to reliability but when it comes to cost, even these three are quite expensive to fix and maintain compared to their Japanese counterparts.
I love riding my 2023 890AR. Last weekend, I rode Section 7 of the ORBDR. I had a great time. My lack of skills was the only limitation. Two weekends before I rode Section 1 of the WABDR with a 150 mile non-stop sprint to get back home after reaching Packwood. I would have never tried the non-paved stuff on my Super Adventure S and my EXC 350 couldn't have handled 80+ on I-5. For me, the 790/890 platform is the ideal bike for riding BDRs and attending rallies.
You're gonna get many people telling you they love their KTM 790 Adventure bikes. There is a real reason why, and you captured that reason in this review. Great review Ben, keep it up sir!!!
I’m laughing out load at the comments from KTM owners that say how many miles they have on their bikes and it’s been reliable. “I have 8,000km on my 890R and it’s been rock solid!” Jesus Christ I hope it’s rock solid after only 8,000 😂😂😂😂
Appreciate the full review. As someone who is skeptical of KTM reliability, I’ll need to see how this holds up over the course of thousands of miles and multiple years. 1000 miles and a few months, the bike is practically brand new still.
Thanks for an honest review. I was always a street motorcycle rider until the start of this year when I moved off of the paved road to gravel. I bought a 2023 KTM 390 ADV. I still like asphalt roads. The wee ADV gets me from gravel to pavement just fine. I moved to East Tennessee where all the roads are fun, and they may turn into gravel logging roads without proper notice! HAHA! I've owned 2 Honda's, 1 Kawasaki, 3 Yamaha's, 4 BMW's, 1 Triumph now the wee bike. 44 HP of smiles. I've had as much as 160HP and too much throttle made me smile like the Joker.
Great vid Ben and solid overview. I bought a 24 KTM 890R in March. Sold my other 3 bikes 2 months later. Never been a team Orange fan boy but after a few offroad rides you understand why guys are so passionate about KTM. So far so good with the issues, and have 3k miles. It is so capable that you forget sometimes that it's not a dirtbike...lol.
I went from an africa twin to an 890 r and love it. Ktm is reality thoughtful for aftermarket parts. It feels closer to riding my crf450x than my old africa. Im glad you covered the bad air filter. I think it is more of an issue of the stock air filter not being installed correctly, but you can't tell until it's too late. I plan on upgrading to a rottweiler in the near future.
I see you have come around to enjoying the new KTM. I have a 2021 890R and so too does a riding buddy and another has 2023 890R. All three of us have 350 excf models. We are all amazed at how capable these 890 machines are. We've ridden in the Mojave sands and Sierra trails. Come down to Central Cal sometime and we'll show you around. The cam issues others have experienced don't bother me. And they have my sympathy. I'll buy a new cylinder head if need be. However it's my understanding that KTM in many countries, hopefully USA is one, has contributed to the repair. It's not soft cams IMHO it's lubrication to the specific parts of the head being compromised due to poor drilling of oil tunnels. KTM has been mumm. On your new bike if I were you I'd dig below the tank and check the induction system for rubber boot misalignment which can cause ingestion of dirt. Enjoy the ride.
My friend had many issues with his 790 the last 3 months. Amazing bikes when they work but for the price it’s not worth the anxiety unless they fix them. And yet my X300 Kawasaki the one they all made fun about hasn’t skipped a beat.
Didn't even look at this when it came out, Chinese, etc...but the 450 CF Moto/Ibex has really changed my thought process, and now that KTM are in a financial crisis at present (too big to fail, someone will step in),the prices have plummeted, under £7500 here in the UK, that's like $7500 out the door in the US as the Pound has the buying power of a single Dollar! It's made me finally look at one, my plan was to fly to the USA and buy a KLR650(not available here),and fly it to Buenos Aires for my trip through Sth America, but given what needs spent on a Kawasaki, the KTM 790 makes more sense, just fly it directly from London...ideal for an American looking at similar, have a European tour first, and a cheaper freight cost!
The high fender kit is a $150 bolt on. I have a 23 890r that I put the low fender on. They are an easy swap and the kit comes with the different length screws you need. The 890 is so much fun.
3900 miles on my 2024 790 and it’s been really reliable other than I just noticed the output shaft seal weeping a little oil. Luckily it’s a $50 part and easy to change (dealer is 1hr away and it’s a 10 minute job so I’ll just replace the seal) I’m riding mine on a 5k mile trip next month. I love everything about the bike other than the constant wondering if the cams are melting! Great video! But yea, I’m starting to “Get It”
Garage full of KTMs and zero hassles to date. Owned a 22 890 Adv and now have a 23 890 Adv R. Both solid. Had a bunch of Yamahas over the years and wanted to like the T7 but that thing never really spoke to me like the 890 does. What a great time to be a moto enthusiast - so many great options out there...
Do you guys notice the heat at the ancle area? I just have tried the 2024 790 adventure at the dealer and it was amazing and fun. The only downside to me is the engine heat in the city.
I love my 890AR. A 2021 purchased new in 2022, now with over 21k miles on it. The headlamp and front indicators got dampness in them, so were replaced under warranty. The cams are on their way out, so I need to buy a new 890AR 😊
I've got a 2022 890 ADV R with nearly 15k miles and I love it but this love is not without issues. Coolant leaking from a bad/stripped hose clamp on thermostat. Had a significant oil leak from valve cover, just not enough RTV silicone to seal the half moon's from factory. When I resealed the valve cover gasket, I checked valve clearance and looked at the cam lobes and all was well inside the engine for now. I've had a intermittent no cruise issue which pointed to the brake switch failing that can cause this, and well that means my brake lights don't work unless I apply emergency brake force. I hope I'll get all the kinks worked out eventually but I'll buy another one when this one's ready for greener pastures!! Haha BRAAAAAAP!!! @DorkintheRoad
Meester Dork...watch your videos lots really good stuff. I ride a 2013 1190...now have 135,000 kms plus. Yes pre filter, use only good oil and change 10,000kms or roughly 6000 miles. Made for the hooligan in us all. Smiles per mile I see your getting it....enjoy, Ride BC Canada again keep up the good stuff.
I own a 2019 KTM 790 adventure. 50.000 km and perfect camshaft, tranquility comes from riding as you said, the most enjoyable bike also according to my opinion. This group in Facebook you mentioned is crowded with non ktm owners, being there just to pick someone's bad luck and feel better because they have choosen a boring bike 😅
You are wrong about that group. Happy you have a working bike. But many of us do not and have been screwed by KTM. So, maybe just speak about what you know personally.
I am in a WhatsApp group with 700 members and also in a telegram group with another 600, so I am in contact with around 1000 owners let's say. I am 100% sure in those Facebook groups there are 70% of non owners. And according to the cases here in Spain, les than 1% is the actual percentage with those camshaft priblems. I agree that KTM should take care of all of them, and because they didn't this has become much more expensive. They've made a mistake from not calling everyone for inspection and showing big company manners. I understand if your bike is affected you want to burn to the ground de company
Really enjoyed you angle on this vid! Love it actually!! A solution worth mentioning is to get a model that is at least 1 maybe 2 years into its life-spann. Like you did. By then KTM will have, hopefully, have sorted the any niggles. Haters will say "it shouldn't be that way" and I will fully agree but let's face it, you are more likely to get a more sorted and better bike. Many producers release products too early (cars, bikes, mobiles), work that into your purchase! I agree that the Japanese bike producers are better in reliability but they tend to be a bit bland...
I’m a KTM guy for 30 years. Yes I’ve had all the KTM gremlins but never major engine issues. I want a 890r but those cams are stopping me from a purchase. T7 with upgraded suspension seems like my choice. Still deciding.
My friend did the same thing. He’s been riding KTMs for 30 years, recently sold his Super Enduro and 1090R, and was choosing his next bike. 890R/Norden was the obvious answer, but our mutual friend just found the remainings of the camshafts on his 2021 790R, and this curbed the enthusiasm quite a lot. So, T7 Extreme it is, and he’s been incredibly satisfied so far.
20:20 excellent point at the end. Thas why i bought AT. Its solid reliability, but also very good performance, the best out of japanese adv bikes. So is ljke the best mix imo, best of both worlds. Sure its not as good performing as tuareg or 890, but reliability wise its in another universe, i dont even think that my bike have engine, just press button and go, no worries. Andi still can bomb foredt trails, do 120+ on gravel and ride like maniac because theres still lot of power
Hey Dork, I know someone has probably told you this already. You do not have to buy an aftermarket high fender. The stock 790R/890R fender bolts right up, the bolts are already in the fork. I went to KTM World and looked at the parts diagram and ordered just the High Fender. Depending on year you choose you can get different colors. This was one of the first things I did and it cost me $30-$40. So don't spend your money on "High Fender Conversion kits" , its all bullcrap and a quick way they make money. Also the Brake lines fit perfect without doing anything.
I've had a '22 KTM 890 Adv and everything you said was EXACTLY right!! I've had NO problems at all, and the amazing power and fun is insane, and fun off road as well is also incredible. Just had to say how exactly right i think you were. Thanks DITR!!, always love your way of saying everything. Peace. 😁👍
I've heard the comments on lack of reliability all too often. Just doesn't match my experience. 60,000 km on a 2000 640 as my daily ride with only the bearing on the sprocket drive needing replacement, 46,000 km 2014 690 in Mexico and Central America, now 73,000 km with my 2010 690 R at home (now almost retired and used for rally only) and my 2020 890 R with 45,000 km, thereof 21,500 km on a solo trip through Patagonia in Chile and Argentina, Carreterra Austral and Ruta 40 to the Bolivian border, part of Peru and a little of southern Brasil, plus TransItalia Marathon and other events. Service the bikes, warm them up correctly and ride them as designed - Ready to Race. I have dropped all of the bikes offroad, none did suffer more than scratches on plastics. The T7 is not a bad bike and some people are able to ride the bike hard. But if you look at the current upgrade offers by GYTR, you need to invest significantly to bring that bike to the same level as the 890 R, still the weight distribution and the lack of power remains. But, there are so different preferences ....
I now have 4500 miles on my 24 790 and I have loved it. Pretty even mix use on road and dirt. I will have it on the Idaho BDR next week and I have seen all of the northern Utah sections a few times. Also hate the front end look, but I love it from behind. That sounds funny… Anyway I love riding this bike.
My 2019 790 Adv has 20k miles on the clock and required no valve adjustment in its 18k service. My first 2006 990 Adv almost made 100k miles, it was curtailed by a myopic car driver. My second 2011 990 Adv was still going well at 50k when I sold it, and my 640 Adv was reliable but a pig off-road due to its light flywheel. The only issue with the 990s were clutch slave cylinders and the exhaust H-pipe made of cheese. Strangely the rear shock did blow on my 790 at 17k but the after-market warranty sorted that. I too believe that KTM do not cover themselves in glory with their customer support, but there is definitely a group out there who take great pleasure in the denigration of KTMs whether or not it is truth or lies.
I love my 2020 790S, 35,000 on the clock with no issues other than the water connection leak from a loose hose clamp, brake return spring, rear shock fail, I fixed that with TracTive Extreme set up, now its a 790 S R
I put a high front fender on mine, and i got rid of that huge windscreen. The windscreen just gave me crazy buffeting, it was a little better with an extra spoiler on the screen. But i put the 890 SMT screen on mine and that makes it look better and no more buffeting 😎 I have ridden mine for 5000km this summer and had no problems.
Welcome to the club! My new 2007- 990 went 85k before ring failure parked it in my garage. Then,.... My new 2018-1090R is now at 24k with no issues. You said it very well. 15% more fun than it's competitors!
well again a good review , so im one of those KTM people you refer to, yes i ridden KTMs for many years , and i can say never had any major problems with up to now. at present im riding a KTM690 enduro R and its awesome ! . i had a KTM250exc for cover 12 years , a KTM500exc for 3years , KTM 520sx for 4years .KTM450exc for 2years,also a Honda CRF450 , XR400, XR250,KTM390 adventure . and many others. so you enjoy your KTM . and keep up the good work and Awesome channel . After many years of GS and GSA, I got a 2024 790 Adv. I agree with the fun factor and how confidence inspiring this bike is especially in the dirt. Like nothing else I have ridden. Now, I am surprised you did not mention anything about how much heat you feel coming from the engine and cat. I found it unbearable, especially in the summer heat. Other than the potential unreliability (tbd), for me this is the most negative aspect of this bike. Based on a lot of feedback I replaced the cat with a LeoVince pipe which has significantly improved the issue, but in a hot day you can still feel it. Just came to 1000 miles and no issues.
Well said. You reflect most of my feelings on my new to me 21 890s. I have put nearly 4000 smile miles on her. Most fun bike I have ever ridden. This former street rider has yet to find the limit on road and off pavement she begs me to push harder. The only thing I hate is the engine sound. I named her Celine because she is a singer. A prefilter is also on my very short list of upgrades.
I'm glad you liked the KTM. I have been worrying about my cams ever since I heard about the issue, but then I realized how many miles I have on mine. Maybe I just got lucky, but I am also pretty meticulous on maintenance. Now you just need to give the R model a shot!
I went from a 250L to a T7 and now a 390 Adventure. The 390 is so much more all around fun than my previous two bikes and now the new 790 has my eye but I don't want to be back in the same situation as the heavy T7. Decisions decisions. Great review.
I have a 21 890 ADV R and I love the raucous feeling, and the capability. However my wife just got an MT09 SP and after riding it I've fallen in love with that engine and that bike. If Yamaha ever makes a Tenere 900 with the CP3 engine and gives it an IMU all the customization that the MT09 SP has then it will 100% be the best in class midweight ADV bike. I hope they do because I want to see KTM clap back with the 990 ADV even harder. I'm also set to buy a 1390 duke in few weeks to go with my wife's MT 09. We'll see how I feel about that later too hehe.
@DorkintheRoad Open valve clearence to 0.25mm on intake and 0.30-0.40mm because valves tighten up during first 1-5km causing valves to have too small clearence casuing oil film to be wiped from camshafts causing camshaft failures... Best Regards!
I bought the old version 2022 model here in the Philippines. Assembled here with Austrian parts. The bike is ridiculously good off road and I might have just maxed it out on the expressway at 207 kph on the speedometer and 197 kph GPS. Fun as a mofo. My biggest complaint is low speed casual riding isn’t great. It’s a bike that wants to be ridden fast.
You're accurately captured exactly why I love my 2020 790 advR. A few electrical issues that seem to resolve themselves is all I've experienced so far. But boy, its so fun riding this bike that I know its better to fix any issue that may come up than go to a different boring brand. The bmw f900 sounds interesting, but nah
Great review, Ben! I have ~650 miles on my 2024 790. I couldn’t agree more; It’s super fun, great on and off road, more confidence inspiring than an AT, GSA or T7 and is almost as easy to ride as a CRF 300L Rally….its the fear of it exploding or simply dying on the trail and those thoughts in the back of my head that are holding me back from completely falling in love (and the dealer network sucks where I am). All that said, I’ve had 0 issues so far and opted to ‘pass’ on the extra 2 year warranty by way of dealer service/extortion. Just gonna ride it, enjoy it and cross my fingers for now! 👍😎👊
I just spent 2 weeks in crested butte. Hands down 3 dominant bikes, tie between 890r 890 790s. And these bikes were all seen running not at Starbucks and covered with mud and smiles on faces. I put 10k trouble free miles on the 1st gen 790. I miss it dearly. Way better than my current T7.
Love my 890R. It is excellent on and off-road. I had a CBR600RR, hated it. Had 2 Victory cruisers back in the day, great bikes but then I test rode and subsequently bought a K1200GT because wow was riding so much better. Also have an old TTR-225. 10 years with no (road legal) bike. Bought the 890 R. More fun, more responsive, lighter than the K bike, just as fun as the TTR albeit heavy. It’s a perfect “one bike” for me.
I have a 24 790 and hit 2k miles last week. So far I love the bike. I feel the same way you do and the reliability sticks in your head but it’s worth it and at this point I will trade it for another once the warranty runs out. I mainly ride on road and I still love the bike. I set on it at the dealer and it just fit me perfectly. That’s really what sold me on it. I did my own oil change also for $80 with OEM parts. What seat is that? After a couple hundred miles the seat starts to bother me. May upgrade it.
Dork, you absolutely nailed this review. As a longtime Ktm apologist I completely agree with what you stated here. I have a 2021 KTM 890R with 8000 miles on it and it has been almost flawless. I’ve had countless 300 and 500 cc KTM Dirt Bikes and agree that sometimes they have miscellaneous issues but the fun factor makes up for it.
"I'm starting to get it " love that phrase. I've owned ktm's since forever. I thought I was brainwashed or something, but yeah, I am not alone in "getting it". Excelent reveiw and salutations from Romania !!!!
Man, I really wish I could get past the perception of unreliability. Ive had 3 KTM/Husq/GG products, an EC300, a FE350, and now a 701. I've never had an issue--but it is an ever present concern every time I start the 701 or pull the clutch to shift gears. I think the 790/890 might be the unicorn bike I'm trying to find, but I'm not sure I can stomach the reliability anxiety.
Fingers crossed that you dont run into any issues. I had multiple. 1) Cold Start 2) LCD screen failure at random times during serious off road riding 3) Factory tires leaking air with less than 3000 miles on it and not warrantied apparently. One thing I didn't check were the cam shafts that has plagued this model platform. When it worked I loved it, but the reliability issues made riding the bike really annoying and thats when I knew it was time to go back to a GS.
Thanks Ben for the awesome review always wondered what those bikes are like much like yourself, I love Hondas why my channel is called ADV red bikes, but the amount of features on that bike for the price is attractive, nice to see that chewy has an opinion and that you allow it on the channel. Great video. Looking forward to the next one.
I have a 2019 790 Adv R with 56k on it. Cams were replaced at 50K. When I'm not riding the bike and watching YT vids or reading post on the FB camshaft group I want to sell the bike. When I'm riding the bike I say I'll never sell it. The bike is so perfect for me but that reliability feeling is haunting. If I ever make up my mind with what bike to replace it with I'll part ways.
I appreciate your non fan boy review. I have owned a KTM 450F (2006) and three BMW touring bikes. They are expensive to own and maintain, if you are on a tight budget DO NOT BUY any European brand! They are awesome when they are running great. In truth my BMW never left me stranded and my last one ('12 R1200RT) had 46k on the odometer since new with just normal maintenance. It did need a new front shock$$$$$, but I replaced it with a fully rebuildable aftermarket unit which was better than OEM!
Ben and everyone, I would like your opinion. I have owned a 2005 KTM 950 Adventure for 12 years. Done five BDRs on it as well as the original Oregon routes. I love the bike. I am keeping it even after I buy a new bike this winter. My question for you is which bike would I be most happy with after loving the 950? I am torn between a T7 and a 24/25 790. Which do you think I’d be happier owning?
I recently purchased a 2024 690 Enduro R and am now regretting not giving the 790 a closer look, thanks to you. Two completely different bikes, but the 790 looks far more versatile.
Agree with Big rock Moto! It is unfortunate that we have some doubts about reliability, I have owned 3 V2’s, now on the latest (blue) 1290R and it has the best suspension, NO need to upgrade, it has addictive power !! I have had great reliability and service for my local Dealer is Port Elizabeth! Super electronics aids, the best traction control in the business!! 😎👍🏻
There is a very odd reoccurring problem with KTM and top end component issues. CAMs on the original LC8s rocker arms on the LC4 09-14. Flywheel bearing on the 01-07 LC4 (not top end but still). Now cams again on the 790. As with anything, know what the weakness are and plan for them to fail. I’m in the market for a 640 and I’m already sourcing parts to horde for when they break 😂
I think its important to own both euro and japanese adv bikes to understand both worlds, and that theres no right answer, its just whats more important to u ; I loved my ktm looks,.sound and performance. Today i enjoy my AT being super solid, indestructible bjke, care free experience and still very, very good performance. AT maybe 30% worse performance than 890 but its MILLIONS times more solid, longer lasting and cheaper to maintain
I’m glad you said it was ugly in front, because it doesn’t make me feel bad about saying it. That’s one thing that I really dislike about most modern KTM’s, the headlights are ugly.
I absolutely love mine. I have the same exact bike the black one even, it is so fun to ride. I only have 300 miles on it so far but I’m working on it. I have two or three big rides planned. Can’t wait to get out there. Cheers all.
The KTM singles are rock solid reliable, so the 350/500/690/701's. I've had a KTM 990 and an 1190 in the past, the 990 was problematic, the 1190 was totally solid. I flirted with buying a used 2021 KTM 890 Rally recently but ended up picking up another 701 instead, just due to the type of riding I do. I didn't want the extra 125lbs of weight, plus I was concerned about the camshafts on a used bike outside of warranty.
I'm at about 2200 miles (3500kms). I've had my coolant tank replaced due to the cap not actually sealing and it leaking a bit of coolant out on rough rides. I have a turn signal fault that has yet to be fixed. The screen will throw a fault code up for a split second every now and then, even though the turn signals are operating as they should. I've busted off the tail plastic right above the license plate (I have sw motech rack supports mounted there), although I'm not sure that's ktms fault.... maybe poor design from sw motech. Other than that, it's a blast, and like you, I've found I'll take it on roads etc that I would not bring my previous adv bike up (africa twin).
Two comments: 1). Great unbiased review of the 790! I really got a lot of value out of your review. 2). I’m not being sarcastic when I say this. That was seriously the best advertisement! I so need some prescription riding glasses. Going to take advantage of your code with Flying Eyes!

We need you to put 15k miles on that thing ASAP so we can see if the cams survive. Have fun. BRAAAAAAAAP!
@@WeAreChad I’m from Europe and done 10.000km so far without any issue
Dork won't have this bike that long.
Would like to see a super Tenere review. Seems to also be a good value albeit a completely different kind of bike
Dork and Big Rock. 2 of my most favourite vloggers. Down to Earth and honest. You would fit right in here in South Africa.
@BigRockMoto Do you think it will last in the long run though? You guys don’t keep these bikes long enough for it to affect you. I really want one but am hesitant. Would really like to have it long term.
I buy my 2023 890 to Ian from Big Rock Moto and after 11,000 miles in odo I can say this bike is solid.
Ian sez , “ The Elephant In the Room….”
I've ridden the original 790 AR, 890AR, 890 Rally etc. They are super fun bikes when they are working. Just like how much I loved my 990 and 690, I just never trusted them.
My T7 I trust, and in 65,000 miles I have never once questioned if it was going to start.
👆🏼 x10000! lol exactly
t7 is boring as hell and crazy top heavy...life is too short
@@mototrailz couldn't disagree more.
@@MeerkatADV the T7 is the new de650 crazy reliable but oh boy i could fall asleep while riding it…73 HP for 220kg on the road 😂
if an adventure bike is not reliable, it is not an adventure bike
If you have physically looked at the cams you probably should. I just checked mine at 11k miles and they’re bad.
Very honest and much appreciated review
I also was, still am a Honda lover, though I rented a KTM 790 adventure in Spain, to explore the area around Valencia.
Totalmente de acuerdo, aquí en España hay grupos de auténticos odiadores de KTM, su impotencia sobre las motocicletas los une en el discurso
There's already many things that can go wrong and u have to worry about on multi-day travels like flat tires, lost gear, injury etc... why add stress of bike not even startin up ;
And if u don't plan to ride long distances and just play around local tracks then why even bother with adv, just get stupid enduro bike it's at least easier to repair :D therefore killing whole point of existence of 790 imo
Open valve clearence to 0.25mm on intake and 0.30-0.40mm because valves tighten up during first 1-5km causing valves to have too small clearence casuing oil film to be wiped from camshafts causing camshaft failures...
Best Regards!
How much did these repairs cost you in money and time?
You know it’s going to feel great after you do it but it takes serious commitment and thought before the plunge:)
I have in excess of 4000 miles of mixed riding on mine now……no issues and it is a hoot.
It’s very comfortable for all types of riding: 800 km highway in a day, short trips to the bakery, mountain twisties, dirt roads, …
More than enough torque and power, perfect clutch, excellent brakes, super agile, super stable (at all speeds: from slow walking speed to very high speed), excellent suspension and excellent tyres.
My dream collection is (already there for one third 🎉):
KTM 790 adventure
Fantic 125 cc Caballero
BMW R18
Open valve clearence to 0.25mm on intake and 0.30-0.40mm because valves tighten up during first 1-5km causing valves to have too small clearence casuing oil film to be wiped from camshafts causing camshaft failures...
Best Regards!
did you like 790ADV more than F900 GSA?
I’m a bmw guy. Being raked over the coals and having an empty wallet is paramount to me!
lol everyones a masochist at heart...
At least you can RIDE it! Not much “value” in the KTM when it’s in the shop and waiting an eternity for it to be fixed…again…and KTM dodging liability.
Former BMW guy here too. BMW parts are expensive but they're dead reliable! Can't say the same about KTMs. (and yet now I somehow own two KTMs)
My Guy!! LOL
“I have 8,000km on my 890R and it’s been rock solid!”
Jesus Christ I hope it’s rock solid after only 8,000 😂😂😂😂
@@IRLtrollsEstúpido acomplejado 😢
You say 15 percent more fun than the competition, I would say 30 percent more. Cheers
Glad you are enjoying your KTM 790 !my wife and I ride a KTM 2023 890s and love it just over 2000 miles
34k km with my ktm 890 adv. Great fun, not issues (cams have been checked)
#LOWFENDERTEAM4EVA
Almost 15k KM on my 2023 790. I would buy it again, no questions. There is no way a Transalp is this fun, no way that a Tenere is this comfortable.
2024 has cams made out of cheese.
You are wrong about that group. Happy you have a working bike. But many of us do not and have been screwed by KTM. So, maybe just speak about what you know personally.
@@31nerf bad luck. Is that what you call getting ripped off for thousands of dollars for a new top end after 10k miles?
I am in a WhatsApp group with 700 members and also in a telegram group with another 600, so I am in contact with around 1000 owners let's say. I am 100% sure in those Facebook groups there are 70% of non owners. And according to the cases here in Spain, les than 1% is the actual percentage with those camshaft priblems.
I agree that KTM should take care of all of them, and because they didn't this has become much more expensive. They've made a mistake from not calling everyone for inspection and showing big company manners.
I understand if your bike is affected you want to burn to the ground de company
Has dado en el clavo.
Tuareg 660? F900GS 2024? Both are very potent, sporty dirt bikes. Or an 690 with a tower....
Consider buying a used 790R. It'll smoke a T7 all day long.
That sounds funny…
Anyway I love riding this bike.
You can get the high fender from ktm. It comes with the fender and lower fork guards. Plus 3 colors. Black , white, and orange.
Add a Wings exhaust muffler. Buy direct and save. We put them on our 1290’s and we love them.
I recommend doing the cat delete too, much cooler but more noice and performance.
The stock fender is 2 parts. You can leave the fork guards on and put the high fender on from the 890. That is what I did on my 890s.
I have a norden 901 with the lower 790 suspension. Great combo.
I have a Duke 390, and the reliability is top notch. A perfect machine. ❤❤❤
Great review. You're either ready to race or not. And all that may come with that. I'm always ready to race.
Preventative change, or there was wear?
You are getting real, real good at videos man. You have been good for quite some time, but dang........you're good.
I think its important to own both euro and japanese adv bikes to understand both worlds, and that theres no right answer, its just whats more important to u ;
I loved my ktm looks,.sound and performance.
Cheers all.
Great review! Love that Chewie showed up and put his $00.02 worth!🤣
Two comments:
1). Great unbiased review of the 790! I really got a lot of value out of your review.
2). I’m not being sarcastic when I say this. That was seriously the best advertisement! I so need some prescription riding glasses. Going to take advantage of your code with Flying Eyes!
I got rally mode and I’m very novice but it’s super helpful. It lets you control how much wheel spin you want. Which is amazing
