Hi Julie. Have you thought about the possibility of painting the hood the same color as your cabinet doors? To me, that gives a cohesive look to the area then you can find an objet of a light color, maybe a beautiful large plate, to hang there . Or you can bring out the brass of your tap with a patina’ed ornamental piece. Just love your videos. You are doing exactly what I plan on doing in about 5 years when I plan on bouncing between Canada where I’m from, the US where I currently live, and Italy where my husband’s family is from. Huge thanks for all the inspiration! Maybe one day, we can meet if we ever find ourselves in Tuscany at the same time!
I think you can fix the starkness of the white in the kitchen, simply by choosing lighbulbs that are warmer. From the video, it looks like your bulbs are more on the "cool" range, maybe around 5500 lumens, and what you would need is about 3500 to 4000 lumens. Warming up the light will also make the kitchen more cozy in the evenings, and make dining at the table with friends more intimate. 🙂
@@annaleebeverley2763she said at least four times the shades are too small, they are ones she already had on hand and she’s going to get different ones.
Julie- Paint the vent hood green to match the cupboards, and hang a beautiful large plate on it, but the plate can’t be too small, it needs to be extra large or it will look contrived. You could also tile the vent hood and make it a feature. Another suggestion, there’s a rule of thumb that you should always hang a large painting over a sofa horizontally. It’s hard on the eye to see a vertical painting over a sofa. I realize your friend painted that for you, but it will work better if you flank it with a couple of SQUARE mirrors, not the horizontal ones you showed. Mirrors on either side of the painting will give the elusion of a long horizontal expanse above the couch. The lamps can stay, but they won’t solve the issue. And yes, get large simple drum shades for them. The kitchen is lovely!!
Hi Julie! Love your channel 🫶🏻 From a designer’s eye, I would paint your extractor hood in a light taupe colour that pulls from your backsplash tile. This will warm the space and help better reflect the light from your chandelier. A simple wallpaper print look cute also but nothing too busy so that it takes away from your beautiful tiles. Great job on your entire renovation! 🙌🏻
I’m an American living live in France and currently in treatment for melanoma. Whenever I have a treatment or appointment, I bring homemade treats. Since it’s Christmas, I have made Christmas goodies and I always get a smile! So glad you got your water sorted!
I think you should leave the kitchen hood the color it is and have an artist paint a colorful Italian rooster like on your dishes on it. Also, instead of mirrors find some large beat-up copper cookware to hang on the walls. And while a sofa in the kitchen might not be the norma it makes so much sense in that house.
Remember, if your water gets turned off, you always have one flush left in the tank and can use bottled water for drinking and hand washing. Having survived weeks without utilities after hurricanes, I confirm you can even take a full body shower with just a half liter bottle of water and a wash cloth if you have to. Plus you can flush your toilet with a bucket of water from a ditch, pool or pond.
It’s so kind of you to give the ER staff a little treat of appreciation, and, from Harrods no less. Thank you, too, for the easy Italian recipes. I’m always looking for something new to quickly cook up. Bon appétit!👩🍳
You are a renaissance woman of talent, pluck and grace. Even on a beastly day, you can tackle anything and then nourish yourself with a good pasta. I admire you, Julie M.
The exhaust fan hood is just fine! No need to repaint or fuss with it. The beautiful plate will soften the perceived glare of light. Much ado about nothing! Think hard about having mirrors in a kitchen! Cooking will create a film of 'kitchen residue' and mirrors will become a bear to keep clean! Your idea of the wine jug lamps is fabulous, except I would go for much larger bottles -- about three times the size of the ones you found! Those appear to be too small to balance out that area properly! Love the idea of the French linen toweling or grain bag fabric for the horsehair chair. Wonderful kitchen!
In Spain when you sell a property the solicitor holds back some of the money to make sure all the utility bills are paid before the new owners move in. Once everything is checked and all the bills are paid the residual money is returned to the seller.
For the hood in the kitchen, I agree that the top should be painted green, same color as the other cabinets next to it. But that band at the bottom of the hood could be highlighted and painted a different color, perhaps something that matches the natural wood or tile tones, linens or a color in the painting on the opposite wall. It would’ve been great if it had been left natural wood like the small shelf above the sink to continue that line and to tie in the warm colors of the gold and woods on the opposite wall. It’s a lovely functional room. Great job!
Love the sofa without throw on back:) Maybe just casually have it in the seat-arm.? Horsehair chair will be lovely. Ornate long mirrors on each side of artwork would be fabulous.
Consider painting range hood the same color as the cabinets so that it doesn't stand out at all. Flat shade vs pleated shades would suit kitchen better
So nice you got your water back! It’s quite common that an old bill belonging to the former owner shows up…. I would have painted the extractor in the green color of the kitchen, I think that’ll harmonize better with the rest.
Hi Julie! So sweet of you to bring a gift to the hospital! They really appreciate seeing a patient that they have helped ‘all better’ and in ‘regular people clothes’, trust me, I know! I think the entire kitchen is fantastic, I really 😊love it. So many families all gather to the kitchen so why not have a couch in there!
On the exhaust fan hood, I wondered about putting tiles on it, like more of your border tile with the blue. That would coordinate with the sofa, etc., across the room. It all looks amazing. 😊
I'd paint the hood same colour as cabinets.....adding the plate will give you the pop of colour you need...otherwise it makes the hood too obvious. I agree with your family about leaving the sofa in the kitchen..it is the main gathering spot in the home, also when you have a lot of family and friends ,people will migrate between the two rooms...everyone will still be connected , yet there's more seating, and a quiet spot if someone wants to read or quietly chat and still be part of the goings on. Perfect! I'm so happy with the fabrics you've chosen to soften the sofa..they immediately soften the blue and creates a cosy ambience. Yes, to mixing the French linen with the Italian elements...❤ another option is to have a dimmer switch installed for the overhead chandelier so you can control the degree of brightness.😊
I would have suggested to paint the hood to match the cabinets, but the plate there certainly did the trick. It makes so much sense that it's white now, and looks fabulous & on purpose!
The plate on the hood, ready, did take care of the problem. It looks really cute! Linen shades give a nice, warm feeling to the kitchen when the lights are on. I even like it as is, with small shades, so the beauty of the green bottles is exhibited so well. Nice job hanging pretty paintings! And of course, you made me hungry as well! Thank You for this episode, I have been waiting...
Love the idea of the mirrors on the wall behind the lamps in the kitchen! Think that will make a beautiful glow from the lighting. Just love everything you’ve done so far! So cozy and lovely ❤
I would paint it the same colour as the cupboards. It would blend and thus be unobtrusive. You could still hang your lovely feature plate there for a bit of colour and contrast.
I really like those shades, even if they're a bit small, I wouldn't change them. I have a damigiana like yours in my living room, I've put small lights inside of it and they create a really cosy atmosphere. Complimenti per il tuo italiano! Sei bravissima!
I love the paintings you put up in your kitchen. Find me some! The lamps turned out beautifully!! If you put one of those jimmy jars up by the window, the sun will shine through and could possibly see beautiful images on the walls.
Another option for the extractor hood could be to clad it in copper or an antique bronze sheet , you can order sheet online in say a 28 or 30 gauge, just throwing ideas out there for you .edited to add - the sheet is actually metal, not paper 😊
I am so glad you water is back on. Having no water is a major stress. I think you should decorate the vent hood. Maybe with a wreath or small tapestry. 😊
I'm the only one in my family that loves this simple but tasty pasta dish (I live in Italy ) but, when I prepare it for myself I cheat and add a little acciughe (anchovy) and a sprinkling of finely chopped parsley for the colour. Go easy with the salt because the acciughe are salty. 😋By the way, your small Italian house is delightful. I love your attention to detail. 👍😍
The color on the sofa is a knock-out! The blah gray throw sucked the life right out of it. Gray tends to do that. Interesting pillows and perhaps the seat cushions wrapped in swaths of cool vintage fabric? A green vertical stripe - 6-8" wide - down your stove hood. I adore how who've pulled it all together! The picture over the kitchen sofa is beautiful, but it is too high. It needs to feel connected visually in a proportional way to the sofa. Maybe see if a local artist could paint a mural on the extractor fan area using your colour scheme in the kitchen? Just a thought. Thank you for your content, which I love watching from Tasmania Australia 😊
Your kitchen just keeps getting lovelier with every addition! A mirror behind one of the lamps would be great! Since the tables and the lamps match it may be too much to do the mirror on both sides. It might also be a fun project to give the extractor hood expanse some subtle texture by mottling the paint, wiping on a thin coat of a slightly darker colour, maybe picking up on the floor. It’s SO MUCH FUN to go with you to the shops where you source the treasures in the house!
Lovely Julie, you're so very right. The kitchen is the hub of the home, & that sofa works wonderfully as a destination, or a stop-off to catch up with each other & have a chat, keep whomever's cooking in the loop, or just sit and admire this lovely room on the way to the living room. The demi johns are just the thing, BUT I truly think the modern frameless arched mirrors are incongruous right there. The pictures look gorgeous, you clever thing, & Luke's plate looks stunning on the range hood cover. I just love the way you gave the emergency room staff a genuine English treat. I have a 39 year-old Harrods plastic covered apron that's always a talking point. We love Harrods in New Zealand. Sigghhh. Living my dream!
Oh my goodness you were heading home to work. I would be heading home to take a nice nap after that pasta and tiramisu so enjoy your channel so enjoy watching you. Enjoy yourself.
Julie - I love your little Italian house. Perhaps painting the extractor hood the same color as the cabinets so it blends in rather than making it a feature. Then adding colorful inexpensive piece of art or your beautiful bowl. Italy is a country of color - embrace it! But remember, whatever you do , you love it- don’t rely on us! It’s your little house! Perhaps there is a pump of some sort to increase the flow of water in your kitchen.
p.s. if you hang mirrors above the lamp tables, consider what they will be reflecting. If it’s the kitchen stove and cabinetry, you’ll want to see uniformity in color. Again, my vote is that you paint the hood in the cabinetry color. Thanks for welcoming input.
If you want the right colour- take you paint back to the paint store and ask them to add more of the tint to your paint can. Or look at your original paint swatches- there should be one that is just one shade darker. As decorators we sometimes mix five different shades for clients for a home to get the correct match in changing light conditions. For the lampshades you should consider a fabric that has elements of your painting just to tie the room together- like a patterned peachy terracotta and cream geometric. Good luck. 🌺
I agree with Celticlass about using warmer lightbulbs; I think the cooler ones are just NASTY - but unlike Celticlass I wouldn’t use anything above 2700 lumens. That will be as close as you can probably get to the warm glow of tungsten lights. After all, it’s a cozy kitchen that you want, not a laboratory! It’s all looking great; I love to see what’s new in each episode!
next time you go for the weekend by yourself, let me know. i could fly in from NYC. possiamo parlare in italiano, fare la pasta, fare lo yoga, e fare shopping di antiquariato. sarebbe fantastico!! :)
Good morning Julie , there is a saying and it is oh so true, LESS IS MORE, your`e kitchen could start to look too cluttered. Merry Christmas, Carol from New Zealand.
I think it would look nice to paint the extractor hood the same color as the cabinets. The big dish looks great hanging on it. I'm glad you got your water fixed. Imagine trying to accomplish that task if you could not speak Italian! It was very smart of you to learn the language!
May I change my mind? I’m further along in your video, and now that I see your hood fan with the plate affixed I think it looks great and you shouldn’t change a damn thing IMHO!
Loved the demijohn you found and the sofa looks great with the linen throw and cushions ,can I say I’d like the cooker hood painted in the green to match your cabinets x
I think having a sofa in your large kitchen is a fantastic idea. In many homes in America the kitchen is the centre and heartbeat of the home. It is the gathering place. I don’t think your nice bright blue sofa needs to be toned down. It adds a wonderful splash of colour to a largely beige toned wall. If anything an even larger sofa or more chairs for just hanging out would be great. 😊
Is the extractor cover a different material that the walls? Different textures reflect light differently. I’d paint it the same color as the cabinets since it is actually not a decorative feature to be highlighted. I would do a more gathered, draped thing with the linen throw. It would addd more texture and also not look like you are trying to hide the couch.
Love your channel Julie...for what it's worth here's my suggestion for the kitchen rangehood/exhaust...I would source some pressed copper (ideally aged with a patina) and install this to the cabinet facade . Love your enthusiasm for Italy - and that was a lovely gesture gifting the hospital staff with a little gift . All the best from Melbourne, Australia 🦘
Hi Julie, thank you so much for sharing your Italian life with us!! I love it. The baseboards in your kitchen look to be about the right colour for the front face of your stove hood. I'm not sure if it's the right type of paint, though. I love all of the decor details you've brought into the kitchen. I have a beautiful hand painted tiny Portuguese lamp base that I bought on a trip there, I'm wondering if I can find a similar fitting here in Canada for it. Great find! As to the slow moving water at your kitchen faucet: sometimes there's an aerator (strainer) built into the end of faucets which collects minerals and detritus, eventually slowing the water flow. The aerator is located at the end of the faucet, so if you insert your finger into the end of the faucet, you will feel the screen. The piece holding the aerator is threaded on, so you may only need to grasp the end of the faucet and twist. They should be hand-tightened so that you are able to remove them without tools. (If you need to use an inappropriate tool - pipe wrench, vise grips, etc., make sure to protect the faucet with several layers of a cloth or something soft!) Always check online for your particular make of faucet for information, as I just discovered there are tools made specifically for this which may be designed for your particular faucet!) The blockage can be rinsed away on removal of the aerator and when you put it back on the faucet, your water flow should have increased. TA DA!
I think painting it the trim color would be pretty. Probably with the lighting, it would warm it up just enough. Love the paintings in the kitchen. I like the linen shade color

Hi Julie. Your little Italian house is gorgeous. Thanks for your enthusiasm and so much positive energy. I can’t wait for the next one. ❤
lol I live in Sicily, and almost every home I have visited has a sofa in the kitchen! It’s very Italian. ❤
Right 👍🏻
Oh my goodness you were heading home to work.
I personally would prefer the extractor hood cover be painted the same colour as the cabinets.
🤔 Maybe add distressed copper on the extractor hood would look nice. Love your videos! ❤

p.s. if you hang mirrors above the lamp tables, consider what they will be reflecting. If it’s the kitchen stove and cabinetry, you’ll want to see uniformity in color. Again, my vote is that you paint the hood in the cabinetry color. Thanks for welcoming input.
The pillows absolutely soften the blue couch!! Whole video is fun!!
I love that little shade! It’s so cute! I like how you can see how narrow the neck is. It’s very dynamic and whimsical.
Have you thought about painting the extractor hood in the same green as the cabinet doors?
Hi Julie, I think you should paint the range hood in the same green as the cupboards so that it blends in?????
If you want the right colour- take you paint back to the paint store and ask them to add more of the tint to your paint can. Or look at your original paint swatches- there should be one that is just one shade darker. As decorators we sometimes mix five different shades for clients for a home to get the correct match in changing light conditions. For the lampshades you should consider a fabric that has elements of your painting just to tie the room together- like a patterned peachy terracotta and cream geometric. Good luck. 🌺
Found the perfect lampshades - can't wait to share!
I think the white is fine. You are so good at choosing wall decor. Maybe something special to hang there?
I like the plate over the vent hood! I think you should leave it, and the color like THAT!!
Good morning Julie , there is a saying and it is oh so true, LESS IS MORE, your`e kitchen could start to look too cluttered. Merry Christmas, Carol from New Zealand.
Parts of a door. The center is called the panel. It is surrounded on the top and bottom by the rails and on the sides by the stiles.
I think it would look nice to paint the extractor hood the same color as the cabinets. The big dish looks great hanging on it. I'm glad you got your water fixed. Imagine trying to accomplish that task if you could not speak Italian! It was very smart of you to learn the language!
lovely framed artwork, Julie!
Drum shades & I vote yes to the mirrors behind them
May I change my mind? I’m further along in your video, and now that I see your hood fan with the plate affixed I think it looks great and you shouldn’t change a damn thing IMHO!
Loved the demijohn you found and the sofa looks great with the linen throw and cushions ,can I say I’d like the cooker hood painted in the green to match your cabinets x
A dimmer switch will be the perfect fix for the kitchen ❤️❤️❤️
TA DA!
I would paint it a similar colour to the cabinets, would blend the whole area. Lovely to see the house again, I dream of my own little Italian place
Paint the range Hood the same color as the cabinets. The hood is very plane and should not stand out as a focal point.
Paint it the same color as the cabinet doors, give that whole area continuity.
I feel so happy watching you remodel and shop for interiors to fill your Little House. Thank you.
I think painting it the trim color would be pretty. Probably with the lighting, it would warm it up just enough. Love the paintings in the kitchen. I like the linen shade color
