I seem them every year - that year I was lucky with a amazing video (right time right place...) btw. I live in Norway too but not in Oslo or like that...
I'm from Alaska and never saw them until this year here in Washington state and they looked more like moving foggish kind of things. It was pretty. Someone told me the colors are seen best through a camera. It was then i realized the last few years when I've seen green on the lower parts of the sky that I'd been seeing Aurora.
Wow ! Awesome picture Chuck. 😄 You painted this 7 years ago and I just found it like recently.haha But no problem there it's still an awesome painting. It's 2024 now and the Northern Lights are going crazy(sun flares, spots) with colors I haven't seen before.Have seen them many times ,Live in Canada so the new brilliant colors are just mind blowing. Hope you are watching them, very inspiring indeed. Have been painting my whole life but got away from it for a few years.Been painting up a storm again. The Northern Lights paintings I have done have been exzelerating (?) But sure do love your work. ❤Hope to see more.👀👋
hi, I'm a Filipino and I'm a developing artist, recently, I'm frustrated because of some issues in the family and I stop doing anything that involves art, especially painting. But, looking at this stuff, I think it's the best and you inspires me the most... thank you for that...
This is beautiful! I was born in Canada and have lived in Australia since i was a child. My dream is to visit Canada again and see the northern lights. It doesn't look like that will happen any time soon! I think I will have a go at painting this and put it on my wall to keep the dream alive.
I started painting after retirement an have followed you an a few Luther artist i am turning 80 next year i paint as much as I can an love all of the lessons
It would be really helpful for us beginners if along with telling us the style of what brush you are using, you can show the actual brush, so we can see the size & shape and maybe fan the bristles so we can see how stiff or soft it is. Many of my mistakes are in using the wrong brush (I think!)
By far the best northern lights I have ever seen, my husband thought it was a photo when I showed him just shows how amazingly you have brought it to life.Breath taking
It was a very clear and cold night one winter while stationed at Grand Forks, AFB, North Dakota, that I saw the northern lights. It was breathtaking and it was my only time seeing them. I live in SC now and dream of another beautiful sky as this displayed. I just wish the process could be simpler. I used a fine mist of water first then a very thick bluish white and with a soft 2 inch brushed the "curtain" upward and came back with a green wash over the top with darker green and magenta hi-lites. I appreciate the tip of using your wet finger to blend the edges so they don't appear too hard. Thank you.
Went to UND for 4 years, small world. I first saw them myself there as well when we were driving around north of there. Glad I could help, it's probably one of the most difficult things to paint.
I was looking for some winter themed inspiration for paintings to do with a group of assisted living residents as an activity and this it IT. Beautiful: Not insultingly easy, and not so hard that they will be intimidated.
I'm determined to do this if it takes me a month!...your absolutely one of the best artists on TH-cam..your explanations are really easy to follow...Thank you for this amazing video..
You are such an inspiration for me as a beginner painter, I always watch and follow your free tutorials and I have learned a lot . Thank you for sharing your talent.
This is truly breathtaking. I have been looking for a northern lights painting I love as inspiration for my own and this is by far my favorite depiction I've come across! You did an awesome job!
Hi, I can't find light blue permanent, brilliant yellow green, or primary green online anywhere. Could you please tell me where I can find them or maybe possible substitutes? Thanks!
I have to apologize, those three colors are all Liquitex soft body brand. I mix the liquitex in sometimes as they are pretty much the same thing. There are some equivalent colors that Golden makes but I can't remember the names
I agree! I looked at tutorials by several other artists and the painting of the Northern Lights done by Chuck Black are my favorites. I'm in the middle of attempting to paint this but can't find all the colors mentioned so have improvised. I'm American but live in Ireland and there are no great stores like Michaels and Hobby Lobby that carry almost everything color and type of artist paints imaginable!!
This is amazing. I recently did a northern lights painting and although it was pretty, I love love love your style! I might have to try this tutorial! Thanks for your awesome video!
My nieces name is Aurora, named for aurora borealis. I really, really want to do a massive painting like this to symbolise my baby niece in my home. I haven’t painted in a long while because my children and I have been going through so much, but I want to get back in to it and become decent enough (I’ve never been good at landscapes of any kind) so that I can do something like this and have it look half way decent! I love my beautiful niece so much, I never got to have a daughter of my own, and I want to symbolise my live for her by making something that not only will be good enough to display in my home, but good enough to one day actually give to her, I’m hoping. I don’t care if it takes me a year to get it right, I’ll do it again and again until it’s perfect! Thank you SO much for this informative video I think it will help me immensely!
So THAT is how you make those tiny stars! I use a small brush and make tiny dots that takes a long time to make it the way I like. (I'm a novice) Amazing painting depicting my favourite thing to watch at night. :) Thanks for making a video on how to do northern lights.
Short introduction then straight to the point, love it Ive just finished drawing a piece and looking at applying paints this weekend, this video is a god send, thank you very much sir EDIT,ODIN send*
So using acrylics and tying to follow along, my problem is that my paints seem to dry extraordinarily fast compared to yours. I see the colors still blending 10 minutes after being laid down. Any advice on that would be extremely helpful. TIA
Maybe you have a higher indoor temperature? You can use a product called Acrylic Retarder. It doesn't make your paint thin, like what happens when you mix paint with water. You can also use a spray bottle of water, if you keep enough distance while spraying it on your canvas, the paint on it stays a bit longer wet!
My northern lights painting looks a wreck-tried another before I saw this vid. Also I’m using glow paint on top of the colors and put Leo constellation stars in background- that’s glowing so I’m happy there😂 though with light on, not a good painting 🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ I’ll try yours next. Beautiful 💓
Ok let me start off by saying that the final result looks stunning. Not that I would know. Because although I followed your instructions, you seemed to be unable to make up your mind about not only the sky, but everything in this video. Why did I have to draw trees in the beginning, only to demolish them for hills, which miraculously sprouted trees? I want you to know, that a simple painting you drew three years ago, has become my demise. I cannot sleep. You can expect a message from my therapist. Good day. I said good day.
HI CHUCK ; Northen lights and night stars ; wow Chuck another surprise,Amazing , I could watch your painting very informative all day ,and I thank you for this moment , this is Magic in your Art ,and I wish I was at this level Chuck , cheers your Fan GUY from st-hubert , P Q ;
Wow is all I can say. Well...I can also say I LOVE it too. I am new to painting I do portraits like Marilyn in my profile picture. But to paint like that would be wonderful. That won't happen...lol But I will enjoy watching you do your wonderful work. Thanks so much.
I tried this but for some reason really struggle to blend. My paints seen thick so I added a little water and they turn into the same mucky colours. I'm so frustrated with art lol. Gawd knows how you get that kind of pastel soft blend. I feel like I'm painting with poster paint. Good on you though, you have awesome skills!
Its so important to Let ur paint dry between sections. Then slowly lighten and darken your base colors. Its layering and layering and practice. Don't give up. Keep trying.
wow man this is amazing! you have a real gift here!the color choice is amazing and you did a really good job explaining it and being yourself! keep it up man!
I got nervous in the beginning of the video because the colors started shifting on the board ... I am sick and I need help :( Thank you for the tutorial I was doing my first northern lights painting and I did not like it so I wiped it off and I was looking for a good tutorial .. your video was all that I needed with the color palette I had in mind .. I will try you method with oil color though wish me luck 🙌🏻
Hi Chuck! I love this painting. We are doing a painting retreat and the theme is "Alaska." I am going to try to paint this to teach, but I was wondering if you have a video of this that the group could follow along with. Thank you so much for sharing this!
I've never done acrylic painting before as I use soft pastels. I thought I would give this a try. Oh my god I've made such a mess, I just want to cry. I've now got so much paint on my canvas I think it's now bullet proof. 😪
Hi! I tried this painting... Couldn't get the blending part at all... I thought I'll wait for sometime and then continue but by then the painting dried up and ultimately had to paint the entire canvas white . Please help😭
How is it that you can paint so much with one load of the brush. I can't seen to get a line without it being to dry to blend. I keep the paint wet on my board. What am I missing..
I have very little experience but these are things I've noticed.. Is the room you are painting in warm/hot? Maybe misting the back of the canvas may help, or even the front a little bit if you are trying to blend or have something look softer. There are some good mediums to help acrylics to dry slower, I forget what mines called but I have a Liquitex retarder that keeps them wet for a good amount of time. Hey there. I love your painting. I'm legally blind and painting myself. Learning from videos like this one we're honestly I'm pretty much imitating what your teachings in order to learn. I am legally blind, do not have a steady hand, and my eye hand coordination sucks. Is there any advice you could give, because I'm almost out of my navy blue which I am currently using in lieu of cyan because I don't have science. I have about four other medium to light blue colors but not that one and none of these colors mix well together whatsoever! I don't seem to do anything right. I don't want my painting to look exactly like yours when it's done because I prefer the slightly blurry lights in effect. Can you give me advice? Because right now I've got a whole bunch of really solid nasty looking streaks going every which way
Your paintings contain magic :-o Seriously, I've rarely seen something so beautiful. **Hits subscribe button and will be watching your every brush stroke from now on**
You're most welcome once again :) There are barely any painters out there these days who create images like yours. I'm always desperately searching for those because I love that style of art ^_^ And besides that everyone's painting with oils here on youtube, and when you're painting with acrylics like I do it's hard to find people you can learn from. Your videos also helped me with my struggle in painting northern lights that always turned out crappy here. :) So also a Thank You from me to you for putting up videos here :)
Never too old! They are called scrumbling brushes or round blender brushes, then I use smaller round brushes and liner brushes. Brand and stiffness isn't always important to me. Thank you!
@Chuck Black Art I’m still going through all the comments...trying to find a full list of the paints I will need before I begin. Your teaching style and blending light to dark to bring the canvas to life are awesome. I’ve never watched you before but I will search out your site once I complete this one. My 15 year old grand daughter asked me if I would paint the Northern Lights for her birthday in 10 days... yikes! We live in Florida so it seems an odd request but if mine comes out half as good as yours, I will be happy. thank you...now back to searching for the list of paints,
I lived in Norway for nearly ten years and never got to see the lights. This is stunning thank you.
Wow, reaaally? Its on my bucket list to go see it! Was thinking from Norway possibly too.
Having lived in Norway for almost 30 years, I've only seen a bright northern light once, but nowhere near as bright as the painting displays.
I lived in Alaska for a year & some them a few times in February.
I seem them every year - that year I was lucky with a amazing video (right time right place...) btw. I live in Norway too but not in Oslo or like that...

I started painting in 2016 when I broke my ankle and was stuck at home. Mostly I do pet portraits, but your northern lights are inspiring!
I'd love a tutorial on that!

You are such an inspiration for me as a beginner painter, I always watch and follow your free tutorials and I have learned a lot . Thank you for sharing your talent.
Это самое красивое северное сияние из всех, что я видела у разных художников. И оно не стилизованное, а реалистичное. Очень красиво!
Sie sind ein absolutes Genie,unschlagbar!
Love this painting and you do great videos. I like that you tell us what brush, paint and technique you use.
I love the way you paint. I especially love your northern lights. I have always been a fan of the Alaskan landscape. I really enjoy your tutorials.
I haven't seen the video yet but I can tell it is one of the amazing things I have ever seen just looking at thumbnail
This is truly breathtaking. I have been looking for a northern lights painting I love as inspiration for my own and this is by far my favorite depiction I've come across! You did an awesome job!

Born and raised Alaskan. Moved away six years ago. I miss the lights. Man! I miss Alaska.
I still live there. 23 years now in AK. Yeah, the Northern Lights never get old.
So using acrylics and tying to follow along, my problem is that my paints seem to dry extraordinarily fast compared to yours. I see the colors still blending 10 minutes after being laid down. Any advice on that would be extremely helpful. TIA

If you ever come to Dallas I want to go on a coffee date with youuuuu. You are admired from far away! -H
Really awesome painting..i love this types of art..
Thanks Eddie!
Wow, absolutely incredible 😀😀
I love your Artwork, my Friend!
I got nervous in the beginning of the video because the colors started shifting on the board ... I am sick and I need help :(

So beautiful thanks for sharing your talent
you are such an awesome guy!!..New subsciber here!!!from the northern light capital of the world!!!YELLOWKNIFE!!
This is fantastic. Thank you for sharing your video and your talent!
Hi Chuck! I love this painting. We are doing a painting retreat and the theme is "Alaska." I am going to try to paint this to teach, but I was wondering if you have a video of this that the group could follow along with. Thank you so much for sharing this!
The most beautiful one I've ever seen.
I really learned a lot from this video - thank you!
Thanks Susan!
Amazing tips! I've been trying to get my northern lights just right and this will help so much! Thanks! :)
I've never done acrylic painting before as I use soft pastels. I thought I would give this a try. Oh my god I've made such a mess, I just want to cry. I've now got so much paint on my canvas I think it's now bullet proof. 😪
Thanks for sharing your talent, that was awesome! 👏🏻
Wow that's really amazing!❤
Hey -Bob Ross- Chuck! Nice painting!
Fabulous painting. Your work is awesome. Thank you.
It's beautiful!!!!! Awesome job!
This is absolutley stunning! but I can't find primary green anywhere, what other green can I use :) thanks
Beautiful painting!
Multumesc pentru lectie, imi place mult .
Lovely, have you tried using liquid clear or liquid white on your canvas prior to painting, so that the blending of the Colors is easiest?
Hi! I tried this painting... Couldn't get the blending part at all... I thought I'll wait for sometime and then continue but by then the painting dried up and ultimately had to paint the entire canvas white . Please help😭
I love this its so beautiful, looks like a photo, necer used some of your colors !
Thank you Angela!
Fantastic painting
So nice and stunning
The painting is awesome
I love it
I am making this wish me best of luck
How is it that you can paint so much with one load of the brush. I can't seen to get a line without it being to dry to blend. I keep the paint wet on my board. What am I missing..
If you buy slow-drying medium to blend in the colours it will help you.
If you are using too little paint it may dry a lot quicker as well.
Love this painting!
You are awesome bro
Chuck, for tour brilliant yellow green color what would you use for oils?
I tried to make a line green but failed.☹
this is really beautiful! :D I love your paintings a lot. keep it up ❤
-from Bangladesh ♡
Beautiful! You make it look sooo easy. I wish. lol
Hey there. I love your painting. I'm legally blind and painting myself. Learning from videos like this one we're honestly I'm pretty much imitating what your teachings in order to learn. It's beautiful! I'm lazy so I do mine Bob Ross style, with oils and a black canvas lolol
Thank you !!. You explained it so perfectly!!!
Your paintings contain magic :-o Seriously, I've rarely seen something so beautiful. **Hits subscribe button and will be watching your every brush stroke from now on**
I appreciate it that a lot! Thank you again!
:) So also a Thank You from me to you for putting up videos here :)
could you list all the types of brushes you used. I'd love to learn to paint this way but my own style. hope I'm not to old to start at this.
