  • Welcome to this episode of Menopause Conversations with my guest: Professor Joyce Harper
    Author, Educator, Academic, Scientist, Podcaster.
Joyce Harper is an award winning Professor of Reproductive Science at the Institute for Women’s Health, University College London. She is head of the Reproductive Science and Society Group and leads the International Women’s Day events at the Institute.
She has worked in the fields of fertility, genetics, reproductive health and women’s health for over 30 years. She is passionate about education and discussion of all aspects of women’s health but especially at three key stages: the menstrual cycle, the fertile years and the menopause.
Her latest book - Your Fertile Years - was published in 2021. She is founder of Reproductive Health at Work and the International Reproductive Health Education Collaboration and co-founder of the UK Fertility Education Initiative.
She regularly appears in the press, on radio and TV. She is the mother of three sons born through IVF. Joyce is a keen open water swimmer and an ambassador for This Girl Can.
I first met Joyce in person last year at a stakeholder meeting for the new National Menopause education and support programme. I instantly knew Joyce would be a great guest to have on my series - Joyce's energy is phenomenal - she gets very excited about things and its this energy which is manifesting in projects such as the The UK National Menopause Education and Support Programme whose objective is :
To improve menopause awareness, education and support, for everyone.
Underlying principles : This will be a non-commercial programme of holistic support and education about menopause, co-designed with stakeholders and the public. The content of the programme will be evidence-based. There is a strong emphasis on diversity, inclusion and accessibility. The programme explicitly recognises that people already have skills, resources and resilience to manage their lives through menopause, and takes a strengths-based approach.
Overview of the project: The UK National Menopause Education and Support Programme will be aimed at the public and delivered face-to-face in community settings and online by trained facilitators. Courses will be able to be taken by individuals, or commissioned by employers.
Aims: to empower people with menopause information and build supportive communities, by providing a range of courses and support tailored to specific groups.
Project partners include: Wellbeing of Women and the Sophia Forum. The British Menopause Society and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists are supporting the project.
The project is well underway and there is still time to contribute your thoughts to the programme. The first survey and focus groups have already identified that of 8,000 women - the results were that women just didn't know about menopause and were not educated on it. This underpins why Joyce and her team want this to be 'co-designed' - taking the publics views and creating something meaningful.
So how about you get involved:
