      That the other 'smartest tech company in the world' has thrown in the towel is a clear sign that no one can catch Tesla. All that stuff about some new EV being 'a Tesla killer,' is nothing but hyperbole. No one can catch up with Tesla, they might survive, but they can not catch up.

    Good thesis. This is fresher and more interesting than I expected. The Stellantis CEO said there were only be 5 companies that will survive. Which is just like what happened in the 1910s and 20s when the American auto industry consolidated into (primarily) the Big Three. What this video makes me wonder is What was the profitability of all the automakers in the 10s and 20s as this shakeout/consolidation took place? Was the early GM ever in a position where as it grew it lost significant sums of money while Ford was hugely profitable?
    Everything we were told to expect, and what seemed obvious in about 2018 is coming to pass, just not in the order we thought. I expected by now that my Model Y would be less than a year away from full FSD, but I didn't expect Tesla to offer to license their system to other companies.
    The only thing missing here is batteries, scaling up, current constraints, how fast can raw materials be scaled up. No doubt that's on your ToDo list, and of course you've discussed it. I see a future where there will be more than a few EV makers in competition with Tesla, but those vehicles will have Tesla's charging system, FSD and other software, and maybe Tesla/Panasonic batteries. Tesla will make the most profits, but these older companies will survive and be profitable.
    By far the greatest achievement to date is: Tesla has killed the Internal Combustion Engine.

    I’m curious how they plan on making early generation Teslas fully autonomous if they’re running on old hardware? Aren’t only about half of the total fleet on the road capable of FSD potentially? For instance my 2017 Model S 90D doesn’t even do auto lane change in autopilot on the highway.

      Tesla transitioned to Hardware 3 in March 2019. The vast majority of the fleet has been produced after this (Model 3 production wasn't ramped until 2018 and Model Y introduced in 2020). Tesla has produced about 5 million vehicles since Hardware 3 was introduced. From 2012 to 2018, Tesla produced about 530K vehicles.

    We will see. I think you're completely buying into some of Tesla's lies and exaggerations while underestimating the competition.
    But the situation with the other traditional American carmakers really doesn't look good.
    But if you look at Europe or China, you will see a much more competitive market that is much further ahead. There is a healthy supply of charging station operators and also car manufacturers (China in brackets).
    In Europe, there are already two good electric cars available from this year, the Citroen EC3 and the Renault R5, for around $25,000 and you can be sure that they wouldn't sell them if they weren't going to make a little profit in the foreseeable future at least.
    I'm still curious to see how the US market will develop, as both the Japanese and the other American (except Tesla) car manufacturers are in a bad position. Maybe the Chinese and the Europeans will manage to increase their market share

    Farzad great informative video. The one area I’m still skeptical is on FSD. Can teslas AI software solve for every edge case in driving? I feel there are infinite cases that have used human judgement to solve or crash. You should do a video on edge cases and challenge the solving of FSD and play with a pessimistic viewpoint. Thanks

    • @brianp8384
      @brianp8384 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Maybe the same way humans deal with weird edge cases? If FSD can be trained with millions more miles than any human has in their individual experience, it should presumably stand a good chance even in one-in-a-million situations. I think Elon said there will always be some small number of crashes, but several orders of magnitude less than humans.

    • @ssing7113

      How do humans handle edges cases today? They have previous driving knowledge they can put to work to navigate said case. Mostly these are rooted in “don’t crash, avoid things that could hurt the car, make yourself predictable.”
      Neural Nets will allow the car to navigate the world using these types of fundamental points. After a certain point, the car will not need to see every situation to navigate thru it, just like a human.

  • @designSentry
    @designSentry 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Tesla is great but there are too many assumptions in your thesis that could easily not apply.
    1) Competitors probably don't loose a dime on any manufactured and sold EV, the "loss" comes from R&D required, and it would turn into profit per vehicle sold at scale. They simply forfeit R&D for now, as they clearly lost to Tesla when it comes to overall car quality and engineering. When manufacturing and tech becomes more standardised they will get back onto market. Tesla's strength is in manufacturing however, but as technology advances it will become less apparent (iPhone vs Galaxy phones i.e).
    2) There is quite the possibility that to achieve necessary safety and quality of Tesla FSD, the cars will require more powerful processing units than the ones already bundled. AFAIR they are manufactured by AMD, and while greatly efficient, they might not be enough. This means the fleet of FSD cars might not be as vast as one would assume.
    3) The other side of this is, companies probably won't even need to bundle the processing software and hardware components needed for FSD (aside from cameras). There are off the shelf solutions being worked on, like COMMA AI, where you just plug a device to an OBD port and it controls the car for you. Imagine CarPlay but FSD. The FSD competition can come out from nowhere, and I would actually expect Apple and Google to be main Tesla competitor in this field, rather than any of the car manufacturers, as we all know how slow they are to adapt technology (CarPlay being the perfect example.
    4) Just to add a pet peeve of mine - the thing that is touted countless times about FSD's neural network replacing 300k lines of code in FSD V12 : 300k lines of code is nothing. A website of medium complexity with it's dependancies can be upwards of 100k lines of code. For comparison Google Chrome has 6.7 million lines, Firefox is 21 Million! MS Office is 45 Million. Guys, please, please stop using this hearsay argument as if it's something impressive.
    Food for thought, would be nice to hear your opinions on those too.

    Driving a Model 3 since July 2023. The gap between traditional car design and Teslas is about a decade. Just a few months ago there was an update that basically turned all camera views to clean crips full hd instead of a blurry, noisy camera feed. The GPU with HW3.5 is about as strong as a Nvidia 3080 and the Ryzen CPU makes the whole system future proof. And now with FSD12.2.1 in the beta and showing stellar results, full automous driving could arrive in a few months.
    What I hate about Germany for example is that about all the industries - especially cars - have become super innovation lazy and arrogant at the same time. And now they are paying the bill by loosing market share.

Nice selling point but all those 400 000 who paid for the dream and got a normal ev may have something different to say cause they are still driving the car themselves. The build quality of my M3 is not that great and to say that they will be making an even flimsier model 2 redwood can be a challenge (and do not expect a decent range or motor on that one). for 8 months now the stock went from 260 to the current 200ish cause every project is just on hold albeit mucho publicity.

Data gathered from takeovers can be used to give regulators the information required to uplevel the system to, say, L3, and then the iteration continues. They need to be very conservative though because the context these days is extreme regulator skepticism hat needs to be overcome. Even just one serious accident could set the whole program back.

    • @richardjones8395
      @richardjones8395 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have no doubt that any accidents will receive a huge amount of attention. The good thing is that when the system is good enough, Tesla will have the data to show regulators that it is safer than human driven vehicles. It doesn't have to get to the level where there are zero accidents. It just needs to be a significantly lower rate than other vehicles on the road (and the data needs to be indisputable).

    BYD's sales number reflect the number of units sold. However, BYD lumps its hi bred vehicles (not truly pure EV's) with its EV units so the numbers do not truly reflect the actual number of pure EV's sold, Tecla's numbers are for pure EV sales. It is a matter of comparing apples and oranges, it doesn't truly reflect Chinas position in the EV market place.

    I strongly disagree with the statement that Tesla is making affordable cars. Affordable cars ore ones that don't require an additional $30,000 in home solar power to charge it or cause you to lose your job because you couldn't get a charger on an overcast day. An affordable EV is one that isn't long-range, isn't self-driving, isn't a roomy 5-seater, doesn't have an infotainment center, has mechanical window controls, doesn't have enough batteries to power a house, and doesn't have a 0 to 60 time. That's what gas-powered cars are good for. An EV should get you around town and hit 55 mph on occasion. We aren't so well established in the 22nd century that we can have long-range, flying electric vehicles for everyone but that's what they're working on. Sure, it'll be nice for the streets, but what about all the excavation and the consequences of it. Let's get everyone on solar and wind power for their homes first so we have a shot at staying out of each other's way while we're preparing our car for the work day. Where I work, the robot forklifts park themselves against a charging station. This is a good use for all that automation crap they load these cars' electrical systems with. God knows we need more potential points of failure on our cars. This is why I'm building a relatively low-tech EV that does what I think they should and also serves as a simple add-on battery expansion for my home when I'm not using it. A week's worth of mileage stored on-board and won't likely ever run low enough for concern. Drive on and follow the trends. I'll be here lagging and watching my bank balance grow.

    So if Tesla can get AI based self-driving to "Waymo levels" in 1 year, what makes you think others can't do the same, especially after they've been shown what works? Because BYD has "decided that it's impossible" in public statements? That reasoning doesn't hold up. As a Tesla investor, I don't think I can count on Tesla having a monopoly on FSD for very long once they get it approved.

    This is great news and bad news.
    Great news -- I am a Tesla stock holder and this should further help increase the stock's value, currently Tesla is priced in as owning 33% of the auto marketshare, so they definitely need to take over the market for me to make strong returns.
    Bad News -- Just like Ford's dominance with the Model T back in the day, having 1 company so far ahead of the others often times leads that company to continually focus on their cash cow and less overall innovation in new models that appeal to the general public. Stuff like this focus on Cybertruck and Roadster 0-60 in

They badly need to get to large scale production and not stagnate at 50,000 EVs/yr, like they're doing now. ....We'll see.

    Not so quick... In Europe, Tesla is not that dominating. If you look at Stellantis, they are coming out with a 25k dollar car, the R5. VW is, too. The competition in the new ID7 from VW will take markedshare from Tesla. Other products are arriving like the Renault Senic, and Hyundai/Kia is also taking shares. The problem for Tesla is that only two models sell. Model S and X don't sell at all. New Model 3 Highland is not a hit in Europe when it sells like the ID3. So only Model Y sells a lot. In Norway, Tesla has only 20% share, and it seems to go down now. Then there is the Chinese... So perhaps your predictions are right in the US, but not her.
    Self driving is not a big deal. One reason is that it will not be approved before in perhaps 10 years. Her people will not buy or lease this for the monye Tesla is demanding. It's a pipe dream. People like to drive, and it's free 😂.
    For normal people, it's only a feature.. Maybe it's worth 3 k dollars when it works. Then, the take rate could be 30-40%. Think you're delusional and that you are blinded by your eco chamber...

      Make 50-75k high priced r1t&r1s a year and another 75-100k edvs at a fat profit in Illinois only.
      Instead they made per Forbes about $16,000,000,000 magically just disappear since 2019. And have produced about 80k total vehicle's.
      Ad their debts in and the GA plant bond cost and rivian is already flat broke TODAY! 😀

    I have been following EVs and Tesla since 2008 (probably earlier but that is my first memory of Tesla/Musk/Roadster) and officially admit to being a ridiculous fanboy, everything they do turns to gold, Musk is the original King Midas ha! Even when TSLA was at it's low of $100 last January, my understanding/resolve for the company wasn't swayed one iota. The disconnect between Tesla and TSLA has always been a conundrum but it doesn't change what is happening and where they are going. I find it completely baffling that it is just us in our Tesla bubble that seem able to see what is really going on with them. Tesla is still just getting started....and what a start it has been so far!

  • @galanoth17

    How are you guys not sick of hearing about FSD still? I think we'll need to build AGI at this point to have FSD. It seems like you need human level intelligence for driving. Most companies have given up on FSD. Even Tesla completely threw away it's years of code to be replaced with neural networks only 8 months ago. So it's as if they just started working on FSD 8 months ago. It's a completely new approach. So not sure how close they are. As everyone knows it's very hard to get neural networks to 100% accuracy. You can see this with the LLM models. They are mostly right 99% of the time but that last 1% can take most of the time. In the case of FSD, we can't have it regulated and on the roads unless FSD is 100% accurate. So I don't expect FSD for another 5-8 years.
