In the Nordic countries, more and more people dislike the unions. Their fight was 100 years ago, but today laws protect the workers, even those that are not in a union. So they have out played themselves. I read that of 150 Tesla employees only a handful wanted to join the union and that is not enough to force a company to make a deal with the union. E.g. mechanics are in a huge demand, so they can individually negotiate a much better wage/salary, vacation etc. than they union can offer them, simply because of the competition between repair shops.

Or if they told suppliers they can't make Tesla parts with union labor.

unions were a good thing and necessary to advance the lives of workers, they even built and ran hospitals , however modern day unions have become corrupt and use their power to diminish the workers output for the company while raising the wages of workers to do less work , then they are involved in retirement money that goes missing many times , they should not be able to interfere in non-union companies ability to do business

I'm a paid up union member and believe unions have an important role in fighting for fair wages and conditions. Unfortunately, unions also have a long history of corruption and abuse of power. If workers have good wages and conditions and the majority of them are happy, there's no excuse for them to strike when essentially all they're doing is looking after themselves (union executive). It is certainly totally unacceptable for them to directly harm consumers.

Secondary action is the problem that needs addressing here. Unions should only be able to fight inside the factories and perimeters of the members they represent. Spreading grievances outside of that boundary is the curse of Swedish unions, just like it was in the UK. The chaos it caused resulted in the complete downfall of car manufacturing and the destruction of other businesses such as Coal Mining. Thatcher put an end to excessive Union power, probably the only good thing she did.

With 80% of the sales going to businesses, this might be more of a sign of businesses not wanting to be told what to do. If somehow Tesla wins this fight, other businesses in Sweden may be emboldened to stand up to the unions. Unions aren't all bad, just as businesses aren't all good. When a business is telling workers they have no money for raises, but execs are getting them, and making people cancel vacations to keep their jobs then unions come in handy. Those issues can't easily be solved with an attorney or asking your boss nicely, usually.
That said, I'm a Tesla fan and I don't believe every business needs to be unionized. Employees who want to, should be able to unionize or not.

    Hi Sam,
    thank you.
It's difficult from someone in Australia some 13 800klms away to comment on a country's buying habits, as regards new EV cars.
However we can draw some comparisons from Australia's motor public's trends.
We have both union and non union factories, which can influence the general public, but living in a democratic society we make essentially our own mind up.
I have friends that hate EV's others that own them, that's normal, but one undeniable fact is sales are doubling each year, also being reflected in Sweden despite union influence.
    So as you ask why?
Well perhaps like lemmings we follow each other, Australians want facts from mates they can trust , is this rubbish they are not afraid to tell it as it is even if you've bought one and now embarrassed about a poor decision.
Sweds are finding like Australia the Tesla is a good car, getting better each year, and like mates who own them are confirming this.

To understand the strike you must understand something called “the Swedish model”. Because of this model we do not have “wild strikes” as in many other countries. The union and the company sit down and come to an agreement without any strikes. This serves both companies and employees well. The “kollektivavtal” this is about is something that first of all does not stop the company to give better options to the employees. It is also so that if any employee requests the union to try to get a “kollektivavtal”, the union must try to do that. Most other companies have no problem whatsoever with this. From my own experience working at large companies, Ericsson, HP, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, DXC Technology, all of them have “kollektivavtal “. IF Metall only wants to get a discussion started, they have sent letters and mail to Musk, but he does not respond at all. The strike can continue for years, there is no lack of money. But the union wants to have the conflict solved, and they want Tesla to stay in Sweden.
Many large companies have now decided to stop buying Tesla completely. And 80% of new EV cars are bought by companies. But there are so many good, or better, cars to buy now.
I will not buy a Tesla as long as the conflict is unsolved. It is a big economical risk. But I think I would not buy a Tesla in any case. Right now VW ID.7 Tourer, BYD, or Zeekr are more interesting. I am also waiting on implementation of the new batteries like the ones from CATL.

And yet with IF Metall being beholden to Socialdemokraterna, a staunch incarnation of the establishment uniparty, was it entirely accidental that they decided to initiate the conflict with Musk when they did? Tesla has not ever had a "kollektivavtal" but IF Metall previously let it slid apparently. Was there a request made which IF Metall simply complied with? With there being open season declared on Musk and all that. I just find it hard to believe IF Metall would do anything for their members unless their hand was forced by said members. In this case, did not the initiative for this conflict come from the leadership of IF Metall? Maybe this is a legitimate conflict rather than a hit ordered on Musk. I just would not take it for granted.

Sam, has a percentage it looked outstanding, but numbers not so much, similarly in the U.K. the percentage sold looked great against 2023, until you saw the numbers and impact on market share, which was down because overall BEV sales had increased. This week Autocar found a company which to move its Tesla Model 3’s was offering them at £283/month that is cheap, very cheap, given the older contract are over £400/month. On the face of it looks a bargain, particularly because they are now being used has taxes.

Companies sign to avoid the blackmail tactics otherwise used by the union which by the way has strong links to the socialdemocratic party. In my opinion this Tesla ”strike” is an striking example of misuse of power from the union. They seem not to care about the workers at Tesla at all, it is just a matter of making a statement. I am normally not in favor of unions. Since I had some bad personal experiences. But the Swedish Model where two parties has agreed on salaries has worked quite well. Both the employer organization and the unions are in agreement and we have had less strikes in Sweden compared to other countries.
I’m not saying that the union is right in this case. But the matter is far more complex than it may look at a first glance.
My personal opinion is that the Tesla sales has no correlation whatsoever to this conflict. Swedish people and businesses are not that engaged so they will make their purchases based on their stand in this conflict

This have negatively affected Teslas sales. The “big” months for Sweden has been Mars, June, September and December. Increasing a the low sales numbers of January and February is not so hard. The test comes in Mars.
By the way, if Tesla get it their way the number of strikes here (which is very low with the collective agreements) will rise substantially.
Looking at statistics from Norway, Tesla lost quite a lot there too in Nov+Dec, and Norwegians are not directly involved in the conflict, though they watch the news. Tesla is managing to destroy their reputation in Scandinavia. Now that is something they might be able to afford as long as they make the best cars in the world. But the Chinese, German and French have almost caught up. When that happens, you cannot afford being seen as you fight against the population.

EVs are substituting vehicles in Sweden and Tesla kind of the only one working okey in the cold because thy learned from Norway when it was substituting Tesla, and IF Metall’s main goal is not to stop sales; it’s to ensure that Tesla workers receive the same standard of salary and safety as all other workers. what a surpris some existing employees chose work over the union, perhaps because they had no other option due to the risk of losing their jobs... Tesla has the authority to kick non-union workers unless they explicitly accept the union. As a member of IF metall you have to kick the last guy you hired first However, this situation has likely impacted expected sales significantly.

It is not because the individual employee can agree on a salary with a large company, it is because of the trade unions. It is not just salary but holidays, pensions, working hours and sickness. The collective bargain agreement is wanted by the workers. The genereal popuplation agrees with the unions. Many of the cars are bough by small business, they dont like unions. Allmost all workforce in sweden have collective bargain agreement. Tesla is definetely in the wrong here. Most of the unions in sweden are progressive, and are not against electric cars. But the way Tesla is acting is giving more firepower to people who sees the transition for electrification as an "elite" project. Tesla is destroying the security for poorer people for the good of electrics cars for richer people - is the way many workers will be looking at this. And they are not that wrong.

Maybe, tech is too smart? I kind of would love to see Microsoft and Google go Union only to see their stocks tank like Ford losing $37K on each EV sold and cutting production way back as their unions make more money only to be fired. Swede here. Our unions generally have a good reputation, since they’re in general very cooperative and takes responsibility.
In this particular case, the media is trying to spread the view that Tesla is losing business because of the few striking in the service centers and those companies that refuses to handle Teslas stuff (everything from shipping to waste management). Not sure if that is true. The union IF Metall has been very secretive around how many in the service staff that is actually on strike. I’ve heard 13 out of 300.
I think IF Metall has chosen a counterparty a bit to large this time. Tesla is not going to sign.
Since the collective agreement is voluntary from the company to sign, I pop popcorn and wait, hoping that IF Metall will give up.
