Thank you for the tips on running. I am definitely gonna give that a try. Well it is winter here. I will use my treadmill or just my rug downstairs.

Great to hear that the video has inspired you to give it a go Mary. Remember to start low and go slow. Don't be afraid to do less than you think you are capable of :)

Hey Jack. Great video as always. I am 56 and currently run 25 km a week. I have no arthritis in my knees or hips. I've been running for almost 20 years. Going to park run would be a great start for beginners - because you can walk run or just walk. And best of all you'll meet a lot of lovely people. I agree. It's never too late to start :-)

Thanks for your reply Libby. Great to hear that you are doing lots of running :)
I agree - park run is a great place to get started - also offers some accountability!

Thanks for your work on keeping us oldies fit for fun. I used to run a bit most mornings until I was told in my 40's it was wearing out my knees... I am now 65 with 2 full knee replacements (the last 6 months ago) and would love to get back to a bit of occasional running. Is the couch to 5 km program the place to start or are there other things to consider when you have 2 titanium knees?
    Thank you

Hi Jenna, thanks for watching. The couch to 5km is a good example of slowly building up your running, but it should be used as a guide instead of a concrete plan to follow. For example, if you found that after the 1st session, you had some pain, you might reduce what you did for the second session, and so on. But other than starting low and going slow, there's not really anything differently we woul recommend for running with knee replacement. Just remember you can't start too slowly :)

I tried the couch to 5 k, but in week 2 developed pain around my knees and had to stop. I’ve not had another go because I’m worried of the same thing repeating. I’d not really run since childhood

Hi Trish, good on you for giving it a go - I'm sorry to hear that the pain forced you to stop. I'd encourage you to try again, but start at a lower level than what is prescribed in the couch to 5k. For example, you might start with a quarter of the running distances and do more walking instead.

I presume swimming has the same benefits to general health. I find running hurts. I had Osgood Schlatters when I was about 10 as a result of falling and banging my knee on a big old block of bluestone. My tibial tuberosity region hurts most days and running and bike riding makes it ache all the more. I can do squats with just some low grade discomfort. Should I try to run as well as swim, which I love. Go figure. I can swim up and down a pool following a black line and not get bored but I find running tedious. My dogs would love it though and if you feel it would help my knee, then I'll give it a go.

Hi Cathy, great to hear you are doing lots of swimming and loving it - definitely great for your health.
If you don't want to run, there is no need to. You can live a full, happy and healthy life without running. I don't think it has benefits for your joint health beyond other land based forms of exercise - like the squats you are already doing :)

Hi there, strength training is beneficial for your bones, but there may be some other reason your doctor has made this recommendation. You might try getting a different opinion.

Does fast walking have the same benefits?

Absolutely! Whether you choose to run or walk, make sure it's challenging :)
