St. Finian's churchyard, coffins in plain sight

- Can't believe it, I found lead coffins in plain sight at this gorgeous little churchyard. dating back to the 1400s with a cross that's 1000yrs old. We will read amazing headstones from the 1700s here too.
The church building dates from around the year 1400. It has a residential tower attached to it, where the priest lived. The elaborate eastern window was added in the late 1400's. The tower in this church is the only remaining habitable tower out of the six that were located in the Newcastle area.

Beautiful with all the twisted and knotted trees. Living in America it seems amazing to hear of things dating back to 1400!
Hi Chris, oh I've found so many older pieces on my travels, I feel blessed I can touch such history like this cross x
Hello, many things older over here in Ireland and in Great Britain!
Can’t believe those 4-5 coffins were all open! Didn’t see broken lids lying around, so not vandals? How strange! Well found Sue! 👏🏻👏🏻
Hey Helen, yes very strange
It’s the second law of thermodynamics, entropy increases over time. ie decay of the wood and eventually the lead lining.
Thanks Jim
So amazing beautiful
Thank you
So beautiful and unusually small graveyard for a church there since the 1400’s. Thanks Sue.
It's so pretty with the tress and autumn colours x
Ohhh, such a beautiful day to spend on this walk, Sue , it's just a stunning cemetery and so well kept. I always thought that I wanted to be in a crypt or mausoleum when I pass, but I see so many open coffins, I've changed my mind. Just creamate me!
Hey Becky I used to too but now, no thanks mind has been changed x x
What an enchanting little graveyard and church. What a great find. Thank You Sue and Linda Ball who made the suggestion. That Vault with the coffins needs more protection than it already has IMHO. Much love from the USA!💚
Thanks Gail x
This place seems so serene and peaceful. There's just something about Irish graveyards & cemeteries that appeals to me so much. Thanks for introducing me to them and know that I will check back every once in a while because youtube isn't always great at informing subscribers of new content. thanks again, Sue.
I know Scott it's pretty annoying that they are not sending out notifications they basically tell us to tell our subscribers to make sure they have the bell icon turned on, well I know first hand I don't get my notifications for the channels I watch so it's youtubes fault
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Yeah they need to find another way of doing it consistently... but they probably won''t.
I love to hear the crunchy leaves it's a lovely little resting place for the spirit people
Me too, I love Autumn
Nice to see this small but lovely cemetery. Thanks , Sue
It was tiny but so pretty x
Thank you for the tour through this old cemetery and church ruins!! Very beautiful area!
Thanks Alan x
Stunning place and I love how the ivy blankets the tombs but isn't allowed to run amok all over the place. 1000 years old is that cross wow imagine the things that's happened during its stand . Beautiful video Serenity Sue , thank you so much x
Hey Caron, I was thinking, how many people have stood there in prayer, always amazing x
What a beautiful graveyard imagine a cross standing for a 1000yrs amazing, thank you so much sue for taking us on another adventure, God bless you & take care 🇮🇪🙏☘️
Thanks Fiona, isn't it wonderful x
Beautiful pathway up to the church at the beginning, Sue, and the open coffins - what a find! Thanks as always ❤
Thanks Cathy s
Amazing visit Sue! Thanks so much. It was so beautiful and peaceful, especially in the fall 🍂
Oh I love fall, I'd happily keep this season all year around x
Remarkable experience - that avenue of magnificent trees, as well as the ancient tombstones, church ruins and mausoleum - all so intriguing. Thank you, Sue.
Very welcome as always Shantibel it was stunning, the mausoleum is very strange left in the open like that x
I was out to dinner with the hubby, Watching Now. I missed GV too. Beautiful Cemeteries Sue . Thanks for all your time, money. & sharing with us. 😘
You are very welcome Jan
Beautiful .Seeing the coffins was fab .Thanks Sue .Take care on your travels 🙏
Hi Linda, it's very strange like that but it was super and many thanks to the Rector who gave me the code to unlock the gate x
It's nice to see that they take care of the grounds there. It shows respect to the loved ones who are laid to rest
It was beautiful Laurie x
Beautiful videography and always such respectful and appropriately sensitive commentary. Very kind of the rector to help you gain access to the churchyard. I wish that access to the church could have been possible, too. Typically in late medieval churches burials were made in vaults in the church, too, as of course you already know, I am sure. If the church building has a crypt or undercroft level accessed by a staircase of some sort, it seems that there are frequently a very large number of interments underneath the church floor virtually everywhere. I hope sometime you could explore that possibility there at St. Finian’s. Many thanks for the beautifully done work - you make it look so smooth and easy!
Greg in Florida, USA (unless we get blown away by the next hurricane in a week or so!)
Oh Greg, please take care, we are fortunate here we don't get too many hurricanes and certainly nothing like you get, so stay safe, yes our churches Catholic and church of ireland all have crypts but over the yrs they are sealed no way down, a pity for sure, well when I say crypts it's probably more like a tomb slab just under the church. I visited the only underground crypt in St. Michan's and I've yet to find anymore but I'd certainly love that idea x
Beautiful
Thanks Wendy x
So great to see you and GV visit those who are now long forgotten.
Thank you x x
Thanks for making the trip Sue. Such a historical find. Love how well manicured the grounds appear to be. Very respectful looking place considering the age of it.
Thanks Phil, the traffic was a nightmare, hard to believe this is even here, just stunning
Lovely video Sue, i really enjoyed the walk you took us on, that cemetery is beautiful and well taken care of.. hugs from wisconsin ❤
Hey Regina I subbed to your page hunny
Seeing the stones that are 1700s and are legible was amazing. A beautiful graveyard with the big trees and the path coming in. I love the old church and how the are using it for ashes. So many young ones in there for it being so small. Beautiful care given on the grounds. The coffins exposed was really interesting.
Thanks Rita, actually now you say it, yes so many young people considering the Size of the graveyard
The church was beautiful from the first walk up. And that 1000 yr old cross, wow! Another great video Sue ☺️
Thanks Cathi x
So peaceful and quiet. Love the arches. Good job Sue. Just beautiful ❤️
Thanks as always Suzie x
Absolutely beautiful cemetery. Ty Sue and Gv for sharing this video. Blessings to you both, Kathy.
Thanks Kathy ❤️
Thank you Sue...and Linda Ball. What a great fine. Sue the one stone that you thought was 1719. I thought it looked like a 14 instead of the 17. The 1000 year old cross...was a crazy moment. That definitely was a wreath on the one coffin. The coffins that were open, do you think it was just age that caused it. Loved this walk. Thank you so much
Thanks Sylvia ❤️
I thought it was a 14 aswell
Oh really, now that's amazing 👏
What a beautiful little church and church yard. Thanks Sue xx
Thank you Lisa x
Wow the 1400's, just amazing and oh so beautiful. Thank you Sue, that was quite an adventure. Cheers
Thanks Jen, such a relief the Rector was so nice to give me the code for the gate or it was a wasted journey so I'm extremely grateful to have got in as it was so beautiful
I love what they are doing with the old church ruins ... very unique for the ashes. ♥️
Hey Janet, it is lovely x
Stunning place what a great video
Thanks Jason
Amazing! 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks Tony
Thanks Linda. Cool place. Well kept. Love what they are doing with the old part.
Hi Brenda, yes I loved it too, so neat and pretty x
Wow amazing, God rest their souls 🙏🙏🙏🌹
Thank you Fiona x
That's certainly a lovely spot. Very calm and serene. Thanks for sharing your experience with the rest of us. Another fine video.
Thanks Ron ❤️
Wish it was autumn here in southern Illinois. It was 99F. Todsy
Wow, I'm not going to lie we had a very hot summer in Ireland and I could not take it and it wasn't that hot either, it wears me out, I prefer the weather like I had for that video x
What a beautiful church & ruins, lovely video❤
Thanks Lisa
Beautiful. The coffins were the lead liners for inside the coffin. The coffin itself rotted away. They believed that the lead that way sealed up with the body in it would preserve the body. Queen Elizabeth coffin was sealed in the same way. That is why they had 8 pall bearers.
Thanks Silvethorn, you are correct, I could see some pieces of wood on the ground x
Hi aue , catching up this was an amazing find those 3 coffins , the cemetery was beautiful and the church , you know our oldest marked grave here is 1790 and the tombstones in that cemetery are far older , really reminds me how young a country Australia is
Thanks Julia, it was small but very beautiful 😍
Another beautiful place and lovely video and those open coffins ⚰....😯👻
Hey Rob, beautiful place
This place e is beautiful and so quiet. Love the fires singing. Thanks
Hi Joni it was stunning for sure
Nice to see such an old place well taken care of.
It was beautiful Hazel x
You never disappoint Sue!! Thanks for sharing these beautiful places!!
Hey Russell very welcome
What a gorgeous church, so peaceful as the birds are just tweeting away, lovely.
Oh I love this one too
Amazing old tombs and crypts!
It was fab Ben
Beautiful place thanks sue lovely old stones
Thanks Hazel x x
Wouldn't it freak you out if you had someone staring back at you from inside one of the mausoleum?!
Hey, I found a full skeleton in mount jerome, it didn't scare me, think I'm so intrigued by it all..actually if it was a real person I'd actually be more scared
If you own a house, you know how much work it is to maintain anything. I have stairs that don’t last ten years, and these stones are still beautiful after 300 years. Incredible.
It is incredible Pete, absolutely stunning workmanship
Thank you for taking us along Sue…beautiful just beautiful
Thanks Robert, always feel blessed to walk these gorgeous graveyards and cemeteries
I was just in awe at the beauty of this place. Just WOW.
Hi Dreamseer, thank you so much ❤️

Thank u again Sue 🙂 love watching ur channel. An awesome experience and I can only imagine how it feels to be there for u. One day I hope to visit. Even tho I'm born and bred Kiwi, I always have a feeling of wanting to 'go home'. Much love from NZ 💙
Wow Mel, so many say the same here, a feeling of home in Ireland, so I hope you can't visit x
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Its my dream to 'go home' to Ireland and Scotland Even tho my ancestors moved to NZ, I still feel Irish/ Scots in my bones so to speak. So wen I get to watch ur ch, its a blessing💙
Its amazing with the cross is 1000s years old and the church and grave yard dates back to the 1400s .The beautiful leaves that carpeting the ground of the church yard . The souls and spirit of the deceased lifes was fleeting on the path of life like the leaves where green and strong on the trees and they are now brown and blowing on the whim of the wind.
Hi Wayne, what a beautiful comment, I really love these little graveyards, the more I visit the more I love them all x x
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Its great that you try to reply to the comments on your great fantastic tour of the cemeteries in your green country xoxo.

Beautifully put to words. What a lovely little grace yard. Thank you!
..typo...I like "grace" yard, I'm leaving it at that 🥰
Hi Sue...Great video, I love seeing these old places. You would love the old graveyards in New England USA. Some are as early as 1620. Happy day to you Sue! 😊😇
Hi Cary, thanks so much
Hey Sue ! I'm still watching and loving your channel. I had an almost breast cancer scare . It was a benine tumor. I had it removed and I'm on the mend.
Oh Annie, how terrible to have gone through that but I'm glad you are on the mend, sending my love 💓

Wow, fascinating video. Thank you
Thanks Paul x
You have very nice filming. Such old graves and vaults.
Watching from Missouri USA.
Fortunately recently had a lot of ancestry and family tree, graves locations in my family. Going back to New England, England, Wales, Ireland.
Fascinating that so much is available nowadays with internet and family records, enhanced by DNA and ancestry merging together.
Love your channel. 🙋♂️🐈🐈
Thank you so much, lovely comment to read, can I ask what is the surname that you have ancestors from Ireland?
@@SerenitySueGraveyards O’Toole and Scott,
I've heard of both names in Ireland for sure x
Beautiful graveyard! Many old graves. I could not believe that mausoleum with the coffins in the open😮 sorry I missed the live 😢. Unexpected company! Great tour Sue. Thanks 😊
That's OK Liz, I appreciate you here and watching it, it was stunning x
@@SerenitySueGraveyards hi sue ....those open coffins are they made of stone or wood could you tell? I feel sorry for the people in them having their coffins broken into
Very good Sue enjoyed that have to get one day x
Cheers Andy take care
Love your videos keep up the great work love to you x
Thanks Karen x
Very beautiful! Open coffins are amazing.
Thanks, yes it's a gorgeous churchyard
Very peaceful thank you for the tour.
You're very welcome Rosalinda ❤️
It amazes me how many cemeteries there where you can essentially see and or access the "coffin". It is rare that happens here, my guess would be we do not have many and even any at all that are as old as a few you have shown that are no longer used. Sadly many here that are old are not even accessible and not located on current maps in a few instances.
There is for sure a certain tranquility and reverence, which is very charming. Thanks as always for sharing.
Thanks Chubba, I suppose in a sense we are lucky we are able to see such things here, this on is intriguing thought with just a gate as the entrance
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Indeed it is very cool that you have them. We are a young country and Native Americans never buried there dead, they where put on wood or woven cloth and where placed elevated in open air. The purpose was to not confuse the soul and by being in the open the soul could travel freely as the wind. So no remains after a very short time. There are a few places in N.E. US, around Boston area that are still preserved but to the best of my knowledge, very few that are dated prior to early/mid 1700s.
Sometimes these things can really make think and speculate on things. Again thanks for sharing.
Thanks x
The coffins in the vault look like the remains of the interior lead lining. Originally there would have been a wooden outer coffin with a lead interior which the deceased would be placed and sealed into for an above ground interment in a vault or mausoleum. Over time the timber would have decayed and simply rotted away and the lead casket, whilst it doesn't rot does tend to lose it shape through the vaguries of expansion and contraction from the climate. Lead is heavy and dense but also very malleable and soft- the lid will tend to bowl inwards under its weight.
Hey Benny, thank you for the information, I've found some lead coffins that look like they had melted, some that looked like grave robbers had gone in and messed them around
Such a beautiful cemetery, just loved the walk with you. One can never who the actual count of those entered in those ground and vaults around the world. Thanks for your walk about again...
You're very welcome Elizabeth ❤️
👏👏👏great walk sue,yes sometimes the smaller cemeteries are more interesting, and the open mausoleum ,that was intriguing ,wonder it hasn’t been bricked up ,still a great find may they R.I.P,thanks sue stay safe and well from ballarat in Oz,👋👋🙏🙏👍🇦🇺
Thanks Peter x x
Very nice thanks!
So welcome Sally
I love this place. So peaceful and beautiful.
It really is x x
Just beautiful just to walk around and breath 😍
Yes it's so peaceful, considering the traffic I drove through 10mins away ❤️
I love those kind of bolts that look like the tops of houses. We have a lot of those on the east coast of the states. Very cool.
Very beautiful 😍
Beautiful place !
Thanks Glenn
The massive old growth trees are beautiful as well. Lovely cemetery
Wasn't it just amazing, such a beautiful place
Beautiful resting place.. The coffins open do make me feel sad, to me it an undignified way for some one to lie for eternity, especially as people can see through the iron gate at the front. It's just the way I am 😔. The old church part was stunning, what a beautiful place to have loved ones ashes interred.
They way I feel about it now Carol as I've found it so many times is this, their just empty..their souls have moved on to a better place, so now I don't feel so sad x
NOW, that's a cemetery! I700s ,I love the old tombs .The older the better. The ruins are so,so, beautiful!
Glad you enjoyed the video

Wonderful well kept graveyard love the autumn path under the trees. Ty Sue for history in who life we read of in stone. Don’t understand the open coffins to be about
I'm not sure on the coffins, maybe once they had beautiful doors, who know, I do love the autumn colours x
Autumn is my favourite time of the year with all her colours!
I love it and I adore a crisp day as we say here in Ireland x
Thank you Sue!!! I wished I were there!
Kelli x
Very beautiful, centuries old, graveyard; still maintaining so much dignity, grace and peace. Awesome ruins and a very old mausoleum containing remains of those who lived so long ago. The Autumnal setting and trees so lovely to see. thankyou Sue, I very much enjoyed the video; God Bless ♥
Thank you Irene, that means a lot, I just love Autumn
👍👍👍thank you
Very welcome x
Definitely one of the prettiest graveyards ive seen its stunning
Yes it's a beautiful place
This is certainly a really picturesque churchyard. The headstones are a good age too,but I would not be surprised if there aren’t burials from the 1400 . Obviously any markers would be gone by now.But you can feel the age there .It’s very peaceful. The mausoleum with the gate on ,that was built for the family and only four got buried there. It’s sad really.I wonder why the lids were missing ,perhaps they were worried about being buried alive and decided to have the lids off. It’s an old ne for sure. Those coffins looked too perfect for wood were they stone ?..It was a nice walk around, thank you Sue I thouroughly enjoyed it ..Love n Light 🥰
I'd say they were lead Christine, yes what a fantastic little churchyard
Wow those coffins are REALLY old!
They must be Lauren x
A very nice old place, but strange that there was no door in that mausoleum.
