    Beautiful presentation, thank you. Many of my Halpin family are buried in Deansgrange and I discovered several in an unmarked grave when I visited in 2012. My cousin and I paid the groundskeeper to mark off the grave and place a small marker on it when I visited at a later date. It's sad that many portions of the cemetery are not as well kept as we see in this presentation. It also saddens me how the Catholic Church treated babies who died without being baptised. Little did the Church know those little ones were beholding the face of God after passing from this life into eternity.

      The cemetery is normally very well maintained but cemetery administrators now have the daunting new challenge of controlling the rapidly spreading, deep-rooted weed know as 'mare's tail' or 'horseweed'. They are in the process of trying to eradicate the weed but need to do so with caution as attempting to pull it out causes it to grow faster and careful use of weed-killer is required to protect people and the environment.

      @@DrDavidOwens Perhaps things have changed since my cousins visited and could barely find our relative's grave it was so overgrown due to absolutel neglect. We are aware family members are responsible for the grave itself but to have to trudge ones way through to get to it is of concern. I appreciate your response nonetheless and your superb presentation of Deansgrange. x

    I think I like this presentation best out of David Owens’ cemetery video series. It’s full of the most interesting people about whom we might have known nothing. The need for an Angels Plot brings shame to the Catholic Church. Well done.

    @David Owens Great video thanks. I actually spotted the grave of my great grandparents near the main entrance from one of the drone passes. It was nice to see the memorial stone for Joseph Woodall. I was privilleged to know him though I was only 9 years old when he died. His stone does not mark his actual grave though. He is is buried in the family plot of the parents of children I was friends with back then. Mr Woodall was living with the family who, I understand, took care of his funeral following a fall in his room which caused his death. I should also mention in relation to Hermann Görtz that Dr. Richard Hayes, the remarkable man who found and broke the codes the German spy was carrying is also buried in Deansgrange. His extraordinary achievements helped to shorten WW2.

    This is a very informative video, beautifully presented and orated. Many thanks. Just one question, why is the graveyard in such disrepair...not even the paths are swept, collapsed graves, pallets strewn about and trees overtaking graves....such a lack of dignity for the departed and their living relatives.......

    • @DrDavidOwens

      As with all large cemeteries, it is a constant struggle to prevent weeds from smothering extensive grounds and restoring the ever-growing number of monuments as they are weathered by wind and rain and sometimes damaged by vandals. More recently, cemetery administrators have the daunting new challenge of controlling the rapidly spreading, deep-rooted weed know as 'mare's tail' or 'horseweed'. They are in the process of eradicating the weed which is difficult as pulling it out causes it to grow faster and weed-killer has to be used with caution to protect people and the environment. And, of course, Covid-19 temporarily disrupted maintenance activities.

    • @DrDavidOwens
      @DrDavidOwens  ปีที่แล้ว

      At the time of recording the cemetery was faced with an invasion of a rapidly encroaching weed. I visited the cemetery recently and the administrators have done an excellent job of tackling the weeds.

    • @bahoonies
      @bahoonies ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DrDavidOwens The issue of the weeds was raised on Liveline sometime back. There was also talk of starting a Friends of Deansgrange cemetery group with the idea of people adopting graves and keeping them free of weeds. I would have been delighted to join the group as I always tidy up a few graves when I visit the resting places of family and friends in Deansgrange. Sadly nothing has come of the group idea to date.

      Unfortunately we did not have time to list of the lifeboat men who drowned in the Palme tragedy. However, a few years I worked with Cormac Louth to make a video dedicated to the Palme tragedy. It's titled 'The Lifeboat and Palme Tragedy of 1895' and it's onTH-cam.. Cut and paste this to go directly to it: th-cam.com/video/OcSrRRVytUk/w-d-xo.html
