‘Script for a……’is for me the standout album cover for the genre. It’s still as captivating now as it was when it was first released way back in 1983. There’s something about 2112 too, it’s brilliance lies in it’s simplicity. Can’t remember an album cover appearing on the back of so many denim jackets in the late 70’s/early 80’s and beyond.

The pyramid that appears in the near center background of Topographic Oceans is the Kukulkán Temple a the Pre-hispanic city of Chichen Itza, state of Yucatán, Mexico (at Jon Anderson's request), one of the biggest cities of the Maya civilization (between 8th and 12th centuries AD).

    H.R. Giger
Fun fact: The Dead Kennedys included a poster insert into their Frankenchrist LP; the poster image was made by Giger and caused a lot of uproar in the PMRC-era USA in the 80s. I'll leave you to find and view...

IMO, no prog album art cover can be compared with Jethro Tull's Stand Up. The engraving is superb and the centerfold with the pop-up figures is genius. Top notch job, certainly in 1969.

I kept telling a friend of mine that the Meddle album is an ear under water and she either couldn’t see it or was just trying to annoy me the more I told her ‘IT’S AN EAR!’ 😄. Admittedly I didn’t ‘see’ it originally when I bought it back in the early 70s, and it was only when I opened it up and turned it end on that I saw what it was.

As always I enjoyed the video on the covers very much. It is amazing to see that even today ELP and all the other bands have the same emotional impact on people as on me nearly fifty years ago. Kind regards to your father from Europe and you may listen to Spartacus by Triumvirat when you like ELP.

As a package, and in it's totality ? I love The Lamb !! Just so much to absorb & get into.... But artwork ? Yes' Roger Dean artwork, hands down. I had the pleasure to speak to him via phone at the 1st Yes Convention, along with Alan White. This was in Cherry Hill, NJ, what was it ?.... 1984 or 5 ? 9012Live was the current offering at that time.....

I couldn't remember at first, either...H.R. Giger! I think ELP captured the whole Post-Apocalyptic and Steampunk vibe before we had movies and stuff like that. BSS is definitely one of my top few covers and I really love "The Lamb" cover, but I think my VERY favorite cover, from my semi-official favorite album, is Quadrophenia, which I consider to be pretty Progressive. Other awesome covers from other kinds of early '70s music were the early Elton John and Cat Stevens albums. Another favorite cover, from the '60s is Magical Mystery Tour! I actually think Stevens/Yusuf was pretty progressive in creating "World Music" in songs like Peace Train and Angelsea LONG before almost anyone else. I just view the late '60s-early '70s as an extremely ambitious musical time...

The sleeve of the Meddle-album shows an ear. Just open up the sleeve and hold it upright. And you will see it.
My favour of the Pink Floyd album covers is Dark Side of the Moon. I like this symbolic prism. But I also like the cover of Atom Heart Mother. This cow is somewhat freaky.

Great show once again. I like Yes’s cover for Close to the Edge (maybe the definition of a simple but effective prog rock album cover). I have always loved the Foxtrot cover. Crimson’s Discipline would be my pick. The Caravan cover reminds me of one of my favorite novels, and a very proggy book by Mervyn Peake, which I recommend highly- Titus Groan. Oh, and I always see the head of a giraffe when I look at Meddle.

Great choices. Some others I truly love:
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a blank planet
    King Crimson - Leviathan
    Mastodon - Leviathan
    CAN - Tago Mago
    Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt.2
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
T2 - It'll All Work Out in Boomland
    Opeth - Sorceress
    Beardfish - Mammoth
Genesis - A Trick of The Tail
Riverside - Love, Fear and the Time Machine

"Seek for the sword that was broken,
In Imladris it dwells" ...Whoops! You guys have time warped me back over 50 years to my college days with the Lord Of The Rings references, and I'm loving it!! Must confess to never having managed to get a round entrance door to my humble abode though. I was struck with the nice green shade of your "Selling England By The Pound" album. Much nicer than the light beige of my copy from back in the '70's on this side of the water. The Gentle Giant "Octopus" cover has major differences depending where/when you got it. Mine, again from back in the '70's and sourced in U.S. shows what's clearly an octopus contained in a jar, all in an institutional green color, none of the bright red and such as Dad held up. Suppose that's a big reason that collectors seek different pressings and countries of origin for their vinyl collections. I've blabbed long enough. Wonderful vid, thanks much. P.S. Very fond of the Japanese pressings.

I think Atom Heart Mother is a really nice cover, actually -- not specifically because of the cows, but because the pasture scenery nicely fits the atmosphere of the acoustic pieces on Side 2. I live in Wisconsin, which is a state with a lot of dairy farms, and I often put on the second half of this album whenever I'm driving in an area with a lot of cow pastures.

Generally if I love the cover art it usually seems to follow that I like the music contained therein. The only exception I can think of is Charge! by Paladin. Great Roger Dean cover but the music is a bit meh! My Top 10 album covers, mostly Prog but not all:
    ELP - Brain Salad Surgery
    Wishbone Ash - Argus
Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time
    Black Sabbath - s/t
Yes - Tales from Topographic Oceans
Grateful Dead - Blues for Allah
    Dave Greenslade - Cactus Choir
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
    10cc - How Dare You!

I'm not sure if people consider King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard more of a psychedelic or prog band, but to me their art work at the very least has a very prog rock feel, especially Polygondwandaland. Mars Volta, Rx Bandits and Sound of Animals Fighting also have pretty good art work, but again, those last two may not be seen as prog rock for everyone.

I’m with Dad on Yes and ELP (my profile picture might be a giveaway…) but my favourite Prog album cover is Greenslades’ Time and Tide, by Patrick Woodroffe (sadly no longer with us). I loved Roger Dean’s first two Greenslade album covers (featuring the multi armed man) but Woodroffe’s fabulously intricate take on Dean’s theme was definitely Prog! Not my favourite Greenslade album, but the cover took my breath away when I first saw it.

You mainly like illustrations and paintings, there are great very graphic covers too, The VDGG covers I think Godbluff and World Cover are more impactful. But I get it ! You should have mentioned the artists. The Procol Harum seems to be from a 19th century artist: Beardsley. The ELP cover is from Giger. For example you don't like the cover of the Pet Sound album. From a typographical and graphic point of view it's a much better cover then The least you can do… (even if VDGG is one of my favorite bands).

I can not choose, there are so many great great great bands in the 70s. But also looking at new bands or newer bands. Just look at Ayreon (into the electric castle) what an artwork, what a story, what a music. Or the newer bands like Leprous. or bands like Dream Theater have amazing albums, songs and perfection.
But for some amazing names besides the regular: Rare Bird, Looking Glass, Mountain Mississippi, Mom's Apple Pie....... etc etc.

      @@the_prog_nerd New information.
The VDGG box set is out 3rd September but its disappointing.
Only the Charisma years, only 4 albums in 5.1. Existing masters on cd and then new masters on cd, so duplication. Pink Floyd later box all over again. 68 page book but I've got their biography so not bothered about that. Some live stuff but I'm not that bothered about those.
So for me personally, I'm happy with all the remastered cd I've got. It's a shame, I was hoping it would be a complete album collection with all of them in 5.1.
So, I won't be trying to get it, I say trying because I've just had an email from Burning Shed and I looked straight away to see what was in it and apparently its sold out?
Apologies, its just the signed card copies that have sold out.

In the US when I bought the Gentle Giant Octopus album the cover was a jar with a octopus in it. I had bought Animals when it first came out and did not like it. After all the talk about it and some 44 years later I played it again on Sunday and I still don't like it. It was just a terrible follow up album to Wish You Were Here.

@@henrikv3199 Hi. Yes I got them all, mostly on CD, 11 of them on both Vinyl and CD, and one only on Vinyl. And I love the music on them too, except Hypothesis by Vangelis which is interesting but very hard listening to. He had another one at the same time named The Dragon which is also a bit strange but very cool to listen to, and also got a good album cover. 😎

@@kopptue9622 ok, thx for taking the time to answer. i supposed some of them might be quite pricey and/or difficult to get on vinyl, that´s why i would have been surprised about you having them all on vinyl. i also noticed that when a cover of some album clicks with you, the music often turns out to be good as well.
