lovely chat mate yes i remember it like it was yesterday, we were in my old studio (the studio i NEVER should have gotten rid of in painful retrospect haha) working on some record.... i asked you something like "how the hell are you getting that amazing sound?.... and you very humbly said "touch mate....touch is everything, i can play one note a thousand different ways" indeed you can my dear man...and i have witnessed you doing it many many times with my very own eyes
You both are the best. You have taught us all that touch is one of, if not the most important aspects in all of guitar. Thank you Tom and Jedd for all the inspiration. 👏🙏
Hey, Jedd, one of the things your friend Buky did was to steer a lot of us over to you. I’m glad of that. For an ordinary guy like me, it’s heartening to hear you speak of touch and individuality. I have a miserable time covering someone else’s song or tone. Have made my peace with noticing how my hands change when I change guitars or amps. I don’t seem to create a tone. It’s just accidental. Thanks for posting these.
Don't let the low ticket sales get you down, Jedd. A few years ago I went to see Stephen Bishop perform in a 300 seat theatre, but only 50 to 70 people were in attendance. It was a solo show (just him and his guitar), he gave us a performance to remember, and I'm sure you'll do the same for your audience.
Good luck with the show Jedd, along with Mark it will be a special night. 2 great players with real musical sensibility. If I wasn't stuck down under in a Melbourne winter I would love to be there. Cheers...
Enjoying the glorious Brisbane winter - it's the summers that do for you 😊- but so envious of people who can get to see guys like Jedd, Guthrie and Tom live. I'll get there one day.
I have long admired that Lanois track, White Mustang II. If you like that, try and track down his series of releases called the Omni series. He was selling them from his website. Mostly instrumental, ambient, kind of stuff. Some of it guitar, some of it steel guitar. (by the way, it’s pronounced “Ah-ca-DEE” French for Acadia, referring to the Maritime provinces in Canada, where I grew up.)
Yes! Fantastic! Loved his tones on that album. This sounds fantastic! You're so good at the subtle touches, ornamentation, and harmonics. Truly a joy to listen to. I'm happy to know you loved that album as I did. I remember the work you did on Undercurrent, and how atmospheric your playing was. I'd liked your previous work but you created so much texture and lightplay on that record, it made me appreciate you all the more. "Not knowing what you're going to do next" makes perfect sense. A lot of your work suprises me. It makes sense and I'm always so glad you chose to go the way you did. Every note, touch, accent, shading is so surprising and satisfying.
Absolutely beautiful ambient musings! Love your playing! Solid advice on finding your own voice! Thanks for all of it! Daniel Lanois “Acadie” (White Mustang II) (Lanois,Eno). The album is definitely one of my all time favorites!
Definitely a lot to be said about a person's tone. Like Marty Stuart said: it's like a person's signature. Cats like Tony Rice, Vince, Clarence White, Roy Nichols, Ray Flacke, Albert Lee. I could go on and on, but people like that are recognizable in one or two notes. Tonesmiths.
I love the raw, real, true nature of these videos you make man. I only just found you. But I appreciate everything about your authenticity, vulnerability, and your absolute killer guitar skills...I love picking bits and pieces away from each video of your chord choice and playing too. Just love it all. Thank you for sharing your life with us
I was watching The Sopranos years ago and White Mustang II is in the second season of the show. It floored me. I watched the scene over and over trying to figure it out. We didn’t have a computer so I went to the library and figured out what I was hearing. It still holds a special place in my heart. So cool that you bring it up. You are one of my favorite players. Thanks for sharing these glimpses into your life.
I don't think Buk has given us any bad advice... However, It's inspiring to see pro players like yourself pay attention to a man with so much guitar knowledge and first-hand guitar-playing experience!
I love what you said about playing acoustically on electric to find your voice. I do this all the time without knowing it was a thing in your development - probably because I grew up so much playing finger-style acoustic & classical... and funny enough I feel like I'm able to be the most free and creative when I'm not plugged in and then later it really comes together when I'm able to plug into a rig.
I just want to curl up in the back of your amp while you go on some musical journey to nowhere in particular with all the time in the world to get there. Magical playing as always.
Acadie is great, and I also dig Lanois' "For the Beauty of Wynona". "Lotta Love to Give" is my favorite tune ... great lyrics .. "I'm sick of these red pills, sick of the dealer's grey hand"...
Great video Jedd, just had a listen to White Mustang II … very cool. Had t heard much of his stuff before. Thanks. Very inspiring stuff. Keep the videos coming. You’re one of a few channels I watch on a regular basis. 👌
You stood out so honestly and grateful for your journey during your interview with Otis I immediately subscribed. It is such a pleasure being a fly on your wall as you shoot the breeze while noodling on guitar. I'm trying to figure out how to send a tip. I'm 70.... so even focusing on the print is a full day... You're great my friend. I enjoy every minute....
Hey mate commenting out of order here slowly catching up on some of the vids I've missed the past few days, I know already commented on Punky on your other vid but I believe he deserves likewise yourself a lot more recognition than you both receive! So in reference to Mark Punch couldn't agree more with what you said about him & his musicianship, I also really dig his vocals. Actually to me I've always heard a little bit of Punky & Lanois in your playing mate but with your own unique voice coming through, its really special, hence why I dig your style so much. Take care & thanks for all the great vids along with your gift of music 🙏
Great stuff here mate. Lanois is an absolute hero of mine. Both in terms of his own music and his production. SO many artists have done their best work with Lanois at the helm. The list is wide and varied.
Holy wow Jedd, I’m only half way through Acadie, it is mind boggling soooo good. I had know idea he wrote “The Maker”. Thanks a ton Sir 🙏 Awww inspiring
Very nice. If I lived closer to Nash-land I’d check you out. But, I may move to northern Arkansas, much closer. I discovered the “light touch” miraculously and the dissonant mind.
Awesome intro and cool vibe, I'd love to learn how that harmony works with shades of Frisell/Richard Thompson dissonance. Wish I knew about your show sooner, I'd totally travel to Nashville to catch you sometime. Signed up for updates.
Hello from Canada! Killer opening. Might sound weird, but my routine most evenings after putting our son to bed is to unwind by tuning in to your channel, or Tom's, and do the dishes...however more often than not the dishes end up waiting, because I'll leave them to go play something you've inspired me to play on guitar. Cheers!
Hi there Jedd, I’m from Melbourne and have just subscribed to your channel. I heard you talking about Jeff Buckley in one of your other vids, where you described having a dance party with your children and wife and then Jeff came on. I think we’ve all experienced a similar fact of circumstance, where Jeff’s spirit dwells momentarily and then flys away again. He was some kind of music savant angel from another sphere. I was very distraught when he passed, as it was his approach to the guitar that changed my thinking toward the instrument. Your playing kind of reminds me of Jeff’s and with particular regard for ‘not knowing ‘ where you’re going with it. Would love to hear you record an album of this. Never know where it will end up. I checked out “Mustang II” which is the song I think you are referring to off Acadie, but I think your playing is even deeper. You probably won’t even read this message, but hey, just thought I’d express my thoughts anyway. I like your vibe man. Nice to see an Aussie, South Australian no less, contributing to the world of classic American country and soul. Respect. 🙏
I fully buy into how touch defines so much of one’s identify on their instrument. Some people disparage the “tone is in the fingers” axiom, but it makes great sense to me. However, I struggle with playing without a pick. I need to put the time in to make the transition to playing entirely with bare fingers. Any advice on that technique would be appreciated.
Sorry to hear that the show is not attracting enough people, If I would be on that part of teh ocean I would surely comes ! I'm sure you will be fabulous !
Hey Jedd thank you for introducing me to Daniel Lanois. Also appreciate your thoughts on finding your voice. I find my own playing getting lost between technicality and noodling. Sometimes it feels like I am just drifting along.
The new Tele sounds great! Beefy neck, shiny frets 8) Frets look larger than usual thin Tele? ~10 years ago I would have jumped in the truck and drove down for tomorrow night. (770 mi/12 hrs) 8( Maybe again if I shed a few problems. I just ordered a roller bridge for my 335, to put some flat wounds on it. Just an idea. Good luck with the gig mate!! Break a leg! 8) --gary

Agreed. The first thing that jumps out at me when seeing Jedd has nothing (directly) to do with his musical ability. To me, it’s that he just seems like a fantastic human being! When somebody can play like Jedd, and to have his sense of “humanity” jump out over that…man, that says a lot. Says volumes to me anyway.
It helps a lot to engage people in the comments section which he just doesn't do. People who can interact directly with an artist are way more likely to become a dedicated fan.
