I prefer to use plastic tools for scraping the deck, so as not to scratch the paint, encouraging rust. The tools used for auto bodywork, spreading Bondo, work well.

I found that vinegar in a spray bottle is a pretty good solvent for loosening the caked-on grass. As you scrape with tools, spray the vinegar periodically and let it soak on. These tools worked well for me: Pry bar for scraping, a MoJack scraper made for mowers (from the company that makes mower lifts), chisel with hammer (used sparingly, wire brush and a good portable light. Essential: Dust mask and wraparound goggles. I used a mower lift. Take the blades off! The job would have been easier with the deck removed, but I didn’t want to take that on. It’s hard work. Took me an hour and a half. Last: Spray with PAM spray for pans to discourage grass from sticking.

Great video! I recently bought a home and personally enjoy mowing the lawn. As a beginner lawn care person I'm learning along the way which is why I'm looking for videos like this even though on a much larger scale than I have it still helps me. I have a walk behind self propelled mower. Is there any way to clean it down to the paint? A special cleaner? I'd like to apply a coating to the deck so it's easier to remove the grass but I have to apply it to a clean deck. Thank you again and appreciate anyone's thoughts and ideas.

Wait. Jacked up 12”, but mower was nearly stood on it ass when he cleaned it. Did I miss a magic step?

I have a John Deere Z930M. I lock the deck in the highest position and slide a high pressure rotating pulsating water sprinkler underneath each open area. About 5 minutes on each side of the mowing deck and the deck is sparkling clean after each mowing. Then I run the blades for a few minutes to dry it out and park it ready for the next mowing. I just blow the top of the deck off with a compressor and try not to wet that area down. I'm just lazy. This was an informative video.

You'll probably end up rusting the deck

High pressure can damage the spindles. Bad idea

Should you disconnect the battery first?

Even with everything off, and the key not in ignition. I am afraid to clean it. 😅 is it completely safe to do so?

You should be good if you follow the instructions.

While you have the belt off, rest your hand on top of the deck and spin the blades one at a time. If the deck is smooth you're ok. If the deck vibrates like you are driving on gravel, the bearings in that spindle are crap. Replace them now.

one thing he didn't mention is take out your spark plug just for extra safety precautions when cleaning under the deck

I'm wondering why a " professional " let their deck get that dirty to begin with. It obviously hadn't been cleaned for a few days. Clean it every day when you sharpen your blades.

More like a few months. Never could understand why people would spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars for lawn equipment and never clean it or half way clean it. You wouldn't half way clean your car, would you?

Are yall joking? A few months? Guess you've never mowed when its wet. 10 yards can do that in a day.

Don't care much fir zero turn radius mowers, to me, they are a severe accident ready to happen, seen people flip themselves out of those things, besides, all you can do with them is mow grass, can't plow snow, can't plow the ground, can't disk your ground nir cultivate your garden with them. RATHER HAVE A TRACTOR!

Dan Basta lol you can do all of those things with a zero turn.

For me it was speed + manoeuvrability, pretty much twice as fast if you're just mowing lawns.
