Anything above the shoulder defeats the original point of ape hangers. When American GIs came home from WW2 they modified surplus Harley's to be more comfortable on long highway runs. One of the ways they accomplished this was by making the reach straight forward and seating lower. A lot of these seemingly pointless mods often have an overlooked history and practical application.

The ones that have the rider's arms practically straight up in the air though, never mind if they are comfortable are not, I wonder how well can you control the bike like that?

Idk how half these guys ride how they have their bikes set up. I guess they just don’t turn, that’s the only answer.
Plot twist, I just put 14" apes on my bike and I love 'em. Controls are a bit below my shoulders. I kept going higher and higher with risers and rolling my stock bars more vertical, so I figured I might as well give apes a try. Low speed maneuvering is surprisingly easier, I assume because of the increased leverage. Eye level to top of head has to be the limit for reasonable control though.

I work at a Harley-Davidson Dealership in the service department and I’ve seen my fair share of ape hangers but some of these are absolutely ridiculous and over exaggerated than anything I’ve seen.
What gets me are ape hangers on a touring bike with a fairing. The fairing is for extending your riding into cold temp's but with the hand's above the fairing even with gloves your hands get frozen. It's just a stupid thing to do.
As long as they are reasonable it's OK, the problem is stock dresser bars are terrible, way to narrow and to low, shoulder high is just right, just like driving your car.
I'm 6'1" and put 12" Mayhem's on my Limited. Puts the grips right at top of the fairing (but still behind) and just a tad below shoulder height. Perfect.
Ive seen him in person riding it and at shows i live in the next county over..it looks like hes barely got a grip on them.. idk how he manages to control it..and hes not that tall either..and the exhaust is even taller.... that bike truly is world famous...i wouldn't be surprised to see it set a Guinness world record for tallest handle bars and exhaust..
In Illinois jimmy is liable to get stopped and ticketed by state troopers because shoulder high is the legal limit in Illinois..Missouri doesn't gaf but Illinois will definitely try n get tht ticket..and there traffic ticket prices are absolutely insane
Yeah, I had handle bars like that on my Stingray bicycle. The engineers took logic, math, safety and comfort in mind.... making the forks shorter..... I on the other hand cut the forks off another bike, pounded them on the forks of my bike and made it a death trap on jumps!

No wonder they fall down, they’re so difficult to safely control with your arms fully extended. On long rides their arms probably lose circulation which means even worse fine motor control which leads to poor brake, clutch, and throttle control. All so they cal look kewl 😂
