In 1948, just a few weeks before he died of lung cancer, Tauber sang Ottavio in Don Giovanni with the Vienna State Opera at Covent Garden. I think it was Elisabeth Schwarzkopf who told the story that the company were very upset that this second-rate singer of slushy ballads was allowed to sing with such venerated artists. Then they heard him in rehearsals, and all agreed that he was the greatest tenor any of them had ever heard. I have seen elsewhere on youtube people arguing whether joseph schmidt or fritz wunderlich is the greatest German tenor. Neither of them can hold a candle to Tauber
La sua voce la sua musicalità sono l'eco di un mondo meraviglioso che non c'è piu.
