    OSR Garage says Goodbye to the Volkswagen ID.4. In this video we will tell you the TRUTH about Why we walked away from the VW ID.4. Volkswagen made promises it couldn't keep, lied about updates, and the Cold weather range was just plain disappointing. We loved the ID4, inside and out, but we just could put up with the issues any longer!

    I've had my '22 id4 for two weeks now. It came with 3.1, and the heat pump was included (in Canada). My timing was lucky. Late enough for 3.1, early enough to get the savings of a 22.
    Everything is, quite frankly, dandy.
    I also really like my dealership. Victoria BC is a target market for VW and it shows. I'm lucky that way too.
    Bliss phase. True bliss phase.

    So sorry to hear about your issues. We bought our 2021 Pro S in January 2022 also and have had zero problems. I like the software version we have and I don’t want the update, so that’s good for us. We also live in Southern California so winter temps are actually really good for us. We’re thrilled with the car and plan on keeping it. That being said, Electrify America sucks and it’s good we mostly charge at home. Looking forward to seeing what you get next! Keep up the great work.

    Good video, I agree on the charging. I never had an issue with my ID4 pro, I did receive an email from VW stating that they were going to roll out the update, but then received a 2nd email stating that since there has been issues with the update update and to avoid several visits to the dealer that once they have solved it they will reach out to get the update… I’m still driving with the software that it came with and it’s been working great.

Many times in the winter season, my infotainment system is completely off, and after a long time, I drive and park and let it stay sometime after it get back infotainment, not sure if anyone have same issues in winter. Went to dealerships, and they are helpless not finding any diagnosis to resolve. I'm the same as disappointed as you are, and I respect your concern and willing to sell my 2021 ID4. I never even had the chance to experience owning it and feeling cheated. I felt it during the reservation. Ordered in mid '22, was upgraded to the '23 with a price increase, watched features get removed(charge cable, premium audio), watched people order after me but receive their car before me, watched the price increase again twice(~$1500 and then a sneaky $25), watched my receive date change from Dec 22, to June 23.
    Bought a Model Y the day they dropped the price then cancelled the ID.4.
    Watched people struggle with the software updates and ignored it....got way too deep into the reservation disaster and ignored it.... now I see it's a trend with VW so I am glad I moved on.
    Good luck with the next vehicle! I wish VW did better for both of our sakes but glad its working out!

      Omg that was literally my experience word for word! Ordered in March 2022, kept getting delayed over and over again, coupled with price increase after price increase. Frustrating seeing people get their orders before me who ordered after me. Seemed like there wasn’t a system at all over at VW. Also ordered the model Y the day they dropped the price and became cheaper than my ordered 2023 ID AWD Pro S. VW doesn’t seem customer service centric whatsoever.

    • @srldesign
      @srldesign ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Same story here! Ordered back in July '22 placed the $100 deposit and had Q1 '23 delivery.. My wife was so happy to get the email from VW asking her to confirm the order and added the additional $400. That was back in October. Then yes price kept getting bumped up, charger cable was taken away, and no update on when the car would actually come.. then they emailed about the rebates and how this might not fully qualify when the new guidelines come out.. at this point, car loan interest rates have more than doubled.. then Tesla started offering the $13k discounts on the model Y.. so in Feb we just said screw it.. let's check out the showroom by the mall and test drove a Tesla.. they had one in the color that we wanted coming soon to our location.. price have gone up a bit and only had $11k discount at the time, and we went with it.. got it less than a month later.. been enjoying it past couple of weeks and not looking back.. VW returned our deposit and we have been very happy with our decision! Getting rebates from Fed and State! so would probably end up costing less than the ID.4

      Ditto for us in Victoria BC. We ordered ours Dec 2021 and it's still not here, plus the price increases, content deletion and more recent orders getting filled before ours mentioned already. Our VW dealer confirmed my suspicion that VW are prioritizing higher spec, more profitable cars than ours. That did it for us, I test drove a 2024 Polestar 2 (RWD, less space, more range, more fun) a couple of days ago and we will be ordering it tomorrow for delivery in Dec - this year!

    Except for the winter charging speed, we have the same issues with our ID 4 in South FL. Lots of software issues including the infotainment screen blanking out all of the sudden . I am seriously considering replacining it, but some features and concerns are making me hesitant. At least, I see some people get a bunch of emails with some BS. We haven't gotten many, except for last couple of emails. My question would be, is it better to trade in or sale it considering the issues out there?

    • @offtheshelfrides

      I trading is probably a better option. Anyone looking to buy one has probably been researching, listening and watching videos. Dealerships are clueless when it comes to those things and don't pay attention to other brands. Plus, they generally offer what the market is paying versus someone low balling because it has known software issues.

    I really love these reviews by OSR. I have an Ioniq 5 AWD and I see similar range reduction in winter, but mine has a range of 310 in summer and about 270 in winter, so its has not been as critical; I still think 250 mile range is too low. My own experience is that EVs need to have a minimum for 450 to be useful so that range anxiety becomes less of a concern with customers. Certainly battery conditioning and an 800V pack helps greatly and Hyundai was quick to make battery conditioning a standard in the US foe 2023. But the 2021/22 Hyundai's have had extensive 12V battery issues (about 3% of cars) which now seem to be resolved; I certainly have had zero issues with my 2023. I do like OSR's discussions of day to day usage. It certainly is better that regular car reviews; more real!!!!

    Sorry to hear about your issues, even though you obviously really like the vehicle. My dad always used to say that it is not a good idea to buy a new model of any vehicle, because new models always have bugs which need to be ironed out in subsequent models. EV technology is a relatively new technology, so you are inevitably going to have issues which need to be worked on. EVs are essentially computers on wheels, and we all know about our own personal computer problems.
    Anyway, we are eagerly anticipating the delivery of our 2023 AWD ID.4. We are disappointed that we won’t be getting a heat pump, but we live in an area which does not get too cold in the winter.

If we could find a 2022 or 23 at a decent price we would just upgrade. We also need a little more range. Living in the Midwest, chargers are scarce for traveling and winter range takes a big hit! I was at the dealer on April 8 and they had about 10 ID.4's that were in recall jail that they said couldn't be sold and they didn't know when the fix would come in for them. They leased me one that was in transit from Chattanooga which showed up two weeks later. I intend to buy out the lease because it's only for 10,000 miles for one year just to capture the tax credit. This one has an LG battery and doesn't appear subject to that recall.
    My issue with VW on previous 2002 Passat 4motion wagen and 2013 Golf tdi was the expensive maintenance after the initial included maintenance were done. On the Golf they wanted over $900 and I walked out but came back a month later a little under $800 and then I sold the car. During that service they attempted the first of the emissions fixes and by selling the car I missed the window of compensation by two weeks. A friend that kept his Golf essentially got the full purchase price back and bought a Kia.
    As far as new EV's on the market right now I would either buy a Tesla Model Y since the Austin built ones with 280 mile range and the new 4680 batteries are only $46k, while the 330 mile Model Y from California is only $50k and both have heat pumps. Otherwise the Hyundai/Kia/Genesis I think have heat pumps now and are in the price bracket. I think Mach E has OTA software updates, but I am not sure about the heat pump without looking. I'll have to find the next video.

Such bad customer service with VW regarding the recalls. Secondly the infotainment system is bad, very bad. Since the over the air update I got; it’s still clunky and slow. Finally; there are a bunch of recalls that I’m still waiting to have them resolved. FYI; I also drive with my wife to Chicago to visit family; and being in Ann Arbor; I always have to recharge because it wont make the 268 miles. Charging is pretty slow. The dealer kept it for a few days to complete. There were some fun/interesting additions in the software. Also some continuing annoying notifications that keep coming up. Not a real big deal. But it's already burped with all kinds of warnings coming on the screen. Being a computer person I simply restarted the Infotainment system which is like resetting the vehicles brain. That did the trick. So far so good and no further issues. I'm getting a bit more miles per charge now and the B mode recharges seems also improved. I have 2 more years on the lease. Additionally, it died on me in early January with "Eletricial system not working properly" error on the dash and the gear would not shift to D. It took dealer nearly 2 months to complete the repair (4 weeks of troubleshooting, 3 weeks waiting for parts and 1 week to repair). The issue turned out to be a bad HV wiring harness. Dealer did give me a loaner so I was cool with it. For now, I am fine keeping it. As you pointed out, it is quiet and comfortable with great driving characteristics. Also I primarily drive it around town. For long distance, I still use our other gasoline powered car. 😂

      For the most part yes.There are some exceptions. For example, the Mach-E doesn't have a heat pump either, but it has battery preconditioning. So you can precondition the battery before you leave to minimize winter range loss and precondition on the way to a charger to get optimal charging speeds. VW just figured they didn't care about U.S. owners. European ID.4's All have heat pumps.

    Sadly a very accurate summary. I have a first edition long range ID 4 with 58.000 km in 2 years. I too have mixed feelings. It drives perfectly. Reasonable distance in summer 350 km (mixed) 300 km highway at 120 km/h. But loose in winter upto 30% which is a lot. But lot s of issues. Passenger window motor broke. Arm rest broke. First year lots and lots of software problems. But in the second year it seemed to improve until a battery recall and software update (took 6 days) recall. After that my ID 4 spent about 3 times a week in the workshop for additional battery fixes. Now problems seemed behind us. But our trust in this care is gone. A mont a go we had to buy a new car for my wife and bought a Mustang Mach E. Loving it. The ID4 for me is not up to the quality level of what VW use to be

    I have a 2022 id4. This is the first I have even heard of any recall. I don't know what software version this car uses or even where I would find that info. I charge daily at work for free. I only charge to 80% cause I hear it increases battery life. At 80% I get 220 mile range. I have a charger at home but rarely use it. My ONLY complaints about this car is the original Bridgestone tires wore out in 12,000 miles, due to a combination of vehicle weight and so so tires. In cold weather I do get less range but that's a given in all EV's. Including Tesla. My other complaint is the windows don't always respond how I want. I push for up and they go down. After one year I only have 12,400 miles. But, I don't ever want to go back to ICE. I get coffee at the gas stop and walk past the pumps....$60. $77. Some diesel pumps show well over $100. Those people are being ripped off. Between the $7,500 back to no fuels bills I'll stay with my id4.

    The problem with all cars today -- these products are typically underdeveloped, electronically and mechanically - What the manufacturers think they can do - is using Software to try and fix the shortfalls. ..... this does not work. Because your software (50 to 80million lines of code in a Luxury vehicle) has too many "edge cases" that need fixing when they make even just one change....making it nearly impossible to have a "developed product" in the customers hands .

    Curious to see how things go with the Mach-E... You rarely see those around here in Europe. I do understand the frustration with the communication, but I wouldn't really call those lies. Seems to me like they were just really struggling to solve certain issues, so they had to adapt their communication several times. I drive a Tesla myself and I love the car, but the communication of Tesla is probably even worse. Just ask all those people who payed thousands of dollars/euros for 'Full Self Drive', which was promised to be fully operational years ago (and still isn't)... or all the people who ordered a Cyber Truck that was supposed to be delivered as of 2021, but the first is yet to be delivered...

    Have a 2023 ID4 and a MY. The ID4's winter range is terrible. It doesn't matter to us as it's our second car and still gets plenty of range for day to day driving but it gets 30% less range than the MY (Miles per KW) at least with our driving patterns, maybe the heat pump? This is why I disagree that it's a no-brainer first EV. Range anxiety is a big deal when you first get an EV and I'm not sure the ID4 is going to help with this. Otherwise, it's a solid, fun vehicle with a few annoying quirks.

  • @Gresteh
    @Gresteh ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I might be a little late here... but ok. I have a 2020 ID.3 and i've been following the issue with updates (as it affected my car) so i can shed a little light to the OTA debacle.
    VW tried to update European ID's during 2022 starting with German cars, but they had massive problems, about 1 in 10 to 20 cars failed during the update, forcing owners to call to their worshops, have their cars towed to the workshop so they could fix the car and perform a manual update. VW spent months trying to iron out those problems, modified the 3.0 OTA update and asked for volunteers, once again the update failed on many cars so they decided to cancel 3.0 OTA update and perform an update to 3.2 at the workshop, that update process began early May, as part of that update all cars had their high voltage batteries checked and a surprisingly high number of cars had to replace battery modules. The workshop upgrade process is not without risks or problems and it seems that about 50% of the cars had issues during the update, most of the issues just forced the technicians to start the update process again one or two times before the update got through but about 10-20% of the cars seem to have bigger problems requiring changing ECUs and that will delay the update for weeks as they need to get a replacement ECU for the car, install it, flash the car and hope everything goes right... and that's if you don't need to replace any battery modules, if that happens the update may take even longer as they need to ship your car to a certified workshop that can work with batteries, get the battery modules, install them, update the car and then ship your car back to your workshop.
    I got lucky, my car's battery was fine and the 3.2 update process went smoothly, i had my car updated (and cleaned) in under 8 hours, but that was extremely fast, i'm in a telegram group with other ID owners and my update process was the fastest of them all, most people had to wait a couple of days while other had to wait for a few weeks due to errors during the process or because they had to have some modules replaced.
    I must say that I'm really lucky, my car came with the earliest version of the software (it didn't even had apple carplay), I had an early workshop update to fix some issues and it went perfectly, it got update at the workshop to 2.1 without any issues (others had many issues that took weeks to fix), during summer 2021 i had the first OTA update to 2.3 and that too went well, i got 2.4 at the workshop and once again it went perfectly (8 hours for the whole process), i volunteered for the 3.0 OTA update and i had no issues (others had no luck and their cars had to be towed) and 3.2 went without any issues...
    As for the future... i have no idea if they will do more OTA updates of if they will go smoothly, the 3.2 update campaign has just started, most cars are still waiting for the update, we know that new cars are being delivered with software version 3.5 but there is no timeline for current owners to get that version and i don't expect it before early 2024 at the earliest given that they have to update all existing cars to 3.2 before they start rolling out 3.5 OTA (that's if they can update those cars via OTA without issues).
    In the end it's not that VW lied to their customers with the updates.... is that they were unable to provide updates, they wanted to update all cars via OTA, they planned to do so but they were unable to do so and they failed to be transparent about it, instead they kept delaying it without explaining what was happening... they should told the truth from the beginning and told us that they were having issues with the update process, instead they gave us dates for a tentative update and they failed to update the car once the date came without explaining anything only to announce another date further on that once again they failed to meet....
    2.4 was expected for late 2021, instead it got pushed to summer 2022, 3.0 OTA was expected for summer 2022 instead it got cancelled and replaced with 3.2 via workshop on May 2023 after it was obvious for that 3.0 OTA update was not going to happen as it was too risky (as i said 1 in 10 to 20 cars had to be towed to a workshop to have the software updated, usually forcing workshops to replace ECUs that got corrupted).
    Still i'm happy with my car, it works like a charm, i'ts comfortable, easy to drive, has enough range (about 400km), 3.2 software works fairly well and has a decent charging speed (125kw), if had to get a new car i would most likely buy a new ID, but they have to fix their issues with OTA updates ASAP...

    • @Gresteh
      @Gresteh ปีที่แล้ว

      Since i talk with many other ID drivers i can add more information... many cars have had issues, until recently we attributed those issues to software problems but the truth is that most of those issues were not software related as those that had the most issues were the ones that had problems during the update, the most likely explanation is that there is a high number of defective ECUs and those defective ECUs are the ones causing problems to ID owners... it's not that the software is terrible (it wasn't great, but it was far from terrible) the problem is that there is a high number of cars that have electronic problems, those problems manifest themselves as intermittent errors(loss of internet connectivity, screen problems, phantom errors) and people thought that they were software problems, but once they try to update those defective ECUs the cars tend to fail. People that hardly had any issues like myself never had problems with the updates, and those that had many issues tend to have problems with the updates.
      Most likely VW had/has a quality control problem with their ECUs (at least early on, not sure if the newer ones work better or not) and since the car has a lot of them there is a high chance of failure here. The fact that most ID's have been built during a time where most car companies have had semiconductor supply issues is mostly the culprit here, they weren't able to be picky regarding the ECUs they mounted so they couldn't reject ECUs that kind of worked but weren't 100% perfect, that led to many bizarre issues and intermittent problems.

    That's too bad.. I am disappointed as well with VW. I did get my 3.1 update and battery replacement on my 21 first edition. The software definitely tightened up the interface experience and a few improvements such as "auto hold" are great. But.. to get the new recall on another battery replacement sucks.. mine was in the shop for 5 weeks for that last service.. I'm not not looking forward to the next service. And I'd like to know more about that scary "car may shut down while driving" recall letter. I'll just have to assume the risk has got to be extremely low otherwise they wouldn't be risking it themselves I highly doubt. Other than the scary recall letter I would have had no problem if they told me the software would never be updated.. it still was fine prior to the update in my use.. almost no issues in 20k miles and almost zero maintenance. I charge at home 99 percent of the time so charging isn't an issue, if I had to even somewhat rely on EA charging I would have returned the car, it's way to inconsistent.. especially the the slow charging in the winter. I wonder if hardware wise if the car is even capable of battery pre conditioning? Could that potentially be in a software update?

    • @offtheshelfrides
      @offtheshelfrides  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We home charge 90% of the time.
      I heard that it is possible to update it to precondition. They were supposed to change the battery heating to warm the battery to a specific temp so it didn't cold soak and to help range, but i don't know if that happened.
      The Mustang Mach-E just updated their software and now it can precondition the battery and cabin when programmed for a departure time (car and battery are warm when you leave home) and if you use the in-car navigation to a charger, it will precondition the battery on the way to charge.

    2023 VW ID.4, SW Ver = 3.1.0. But there still are bugs.
    1. Charged does NOT unlock without double tapping the lock fob.
    2. Screen will intermittently go black. Have to hold screen power button for 10 seconds to reboot screen.
    3. No OTA updates. Have to go to VW Dealer for updates.
    4. Backup camera stays on after you are moving forward. Have to touch “X” to close screen.
    5. Etc….etc…..

      5. Navigation is not updated. Use your iPhone or Android Maps to navigate. This will save you from having to go around and around or be directed to the wrong location.
      6. Navigation voice directions will shut off if you do use Siri or Android Maps for Navigation.
      7. Charger door does not close completely. You have to try (4) or more times to close it. Or very very gently push it closed and prey that it does not pop open while you are driving..
      8….etc. etc.

      Looking into getting the ID.4 . We are waiting on the door handle recall issue to be resolved late May 2023 or early June 2023 before we can test drive.
      In Hawaii, and max 180 miles a week. We like the look of the car, and have had a positive VW history of car ownership.
      It can get hot here without the trade winds and want to be sure the cooling system can be reliable to keep our dog cool when we run in to pick up kids, groceries etc.
      I am concerned about the software updates, navigation issues… is there a recommended alternative that qualifies for the $7500 tax credit? And more reliable? In the $45k-$55k price range.

If you were looking used, get a 2022 or newer and make sure it has software 3.2 or higher. It really was a great 1st EV, the 2021s just had bugs they couldn't fix.

    The software issues are a little concerning, I assume VW simply doesn’t have enough good engineers or enough experience yet in EVs, but those battery range issues aren’t that bad, pretty normal. EVs for Northerners are only for people with decent money, a second car, garages to store the car, and don’t take regular long road trips…. Those are well known limitations. I agree the ID4 seems like the best bang for your buck starter EV, hopefully they’ve dealt with those software issues you had.

Most you can drive 25-40 miles in electric before the engine engages, that is enough for me to drive back-n-forth to work without using gas. Ours is a 2021, 2022 has updated software. I was talking about the 200 winter miles in reference to traveling, not our daily commute. Same with the charging issues. We charge at home 90% of the time. ours does have software issues ( minor) and a battery recall.
      we love the care and all issues are minor inconveniences, but you are comparing a completely different car. Like I said in the video, I would recommend this car to anyone as their 1st EV, just not a 2021.

    No heat pump? My 2016 e-Golf Premium had a heat pump. Granted, it was the premium model which meant better seats and a heat pump. But for a car like an ID.4 of any version it should have a heat pump regardless. This sounds like VW being stingy and it's not a good business practice. I mean do you have to get the "premium" version for a car in 2021 that costs (maybe) between 40,000-50,000 USD. Yes it's recenty technology and research/development is expensive but a heat pump for any EV should be standard after 2019 much less in 2021 and beyond.

    The issues with an electric car has made my diced not to buy one. Instead I bought a car that runs on petrol. My car has a motor witch shut of two of the four cylinders if the amount of power on two cylinders is sufficient. That is why the car drives with an average consumption of 5.6 liters per 100 km (that's about 1.6 Gallons ). With a tank capacity of 50 litres, the range is approx. 750 km.
    You are lucky that you don't pay for charging your battery. In Europe you pay between € 0,40 till € 0,65 per kWh. So a full battery charge sets you back around € 20,00 to € 30,00. As you mentioned the ID4 has a range of 200 miles ( 320 km) in the winter. So if you would have to make a trip of 800 km ( about 500 miles) you would have to charge the battery at least two times which extends the travel time by at least 2 hours. In Europe it would take even longer because you don't always have immediate access to a loading facility. Unless they come up with new technology I think the electric car won't last long.

    I like most other owners are frustrated and disappointed with the car. Volkswagen seems to care less about what customers are saying. I do have the updated software on my 2021. It's not much better. They improved some things but screwed up others. I had to replace rear tires at 14400 at a cost of 750 bucks. These are easy around town and hiway miles. There have been no over the air updates at all. This is the worst car. Oh and VW made no adjustment on the tires. If not for the lies of VW and the horrible software I probably would like the car. VW owns Electrify America yet the car is incapable of mapping a route that takes u to these chargers. It will tell me where gasoline stations are. Unbelievably stupid programming. I have to buy software for my phone to map my troops and then I hold my breath.
    Not having the proper heating system when I went north in the winter the mileage cut in half. If anyone asks me if they should buy this car or any other VW I say no. Heat pump would solve much of this but the brain trust in Germany doesn't seem to get it. I leased mine and have a year and three months left but the way it's going I'll probably dump it at one of their dealers early. They can sue me but I can sue them also for all the lies . Buy an EV6. The Korean kia blows VW away with charge times and winter mileage. Should have known after diesel gate that VW was a company of liars.

    I have to say this is why I say don't buy the first-generation of a car. It is a big risk and EVs are all software and updating software isn't easy. All the issues you experienced have been corrected in 2023 and I hate to say could have been expected with a first edition. Something goes wrong they don't know how to fix it right way, that takes time. I drove the 2021 as soon as it came out and said “No” And that was earlier on before knew as much as I know now. Then I compared it to a Tesla, range, Power & charging speed were not quite there for the ID4 in 2021. But as I tell anyone thinking about an EV you want range and a quick charging rate, something the AWD would have given you had you waited a year or two. Pay the extra money trust me, when it gets cold and your range drops or you have to skip a charger because it's broken or full or you need to get charged up fast. You’ll thank yourself.
