    Beautiful story 💓. I, as a Filipina approve of this vegan version of adobo. This climate of finding things to be upset about irks me beyond measure! Food binds communities together, can even be an equalizer. I have taught my friends all sorts of Filipino dishes and they have added somethings to them to make it to their liking. I'm all for it. My heart smiles when they credit me for teaching them. Thank you

    I get really annoyed by the concept of "authentic" food from a country and people's mean-spirited comments can be - like, they can't even model the so-called respect they want for that country's food. Saying that one should always cook a certain dish following a certain recipe sucks the pleasure and creativity that comes with mantle of being a cook. It's like saying musicians should only interpret a piece of music a certain way.

    • @vegaharinui9156
      @vegaharinui9156 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That's a great point. Following on from your music allegory, it's like trying to compare the Animals' version of House of the Rising Sun to Joan Baez. At its bare bones, it's the same song, and both artists had to have loved that song to want to record it, but they interpret the song completely differently to each other and their performance reflects that. That's doesnt mean that one is better than the other, they're both fantastic, they just took what they loved and did it their way. That sentiment translates beautifully into food.
      Being from New Zealand, I feel like lots of people from around the world barely know that Māori people exist, let alone our indigenous cuisine, but I would love to see someone from another place do their own cultural spin on a hangi or rawena bread or toroi. I personally think respect for culture and learning from it is a mutual exchange, and the kind of third culture that IS experimenting with and adapting traditional recipes is an amazing and creative thing.

    Quite the contrary that adapting cooking styles from other cultures is cultural appropriation.... Cultural appropriation is the disrespect of another culture and is wrong. What you intend to do, which is to share with us YOUR take on the food of other cultures, is in fact appreciation that acknowledges our shared humanity and MUST be encouraged everywhere! Especially in this extremely polarising day and climate, those of us who believe in humanity need to stay bonded and connected with one another in any way we can. Please ignore people like that ignorant commenter, they’ve got it absolutely wrong what ‘authenticity’ really means. Authenticity is being true to yourself, and if you, Joanne, as a Korean American vegan, share your own unique take that is formed by your own life experiences and word view, on food from another culture, I consider that very much authentic. Thank you so much for your community and for bringing us from all over the world together right here. ♥️ PS. I’d personally love to see you cook fusion! Korean and another culture. Just like another comment on here suggests, why not collab with another ytber? :D

Unfortunately, my mom’s health is.. not what it used to be and I’ve been trying new things to get her to eat “healthier”, but to no avail. I’m excited to try making this dish. Hopefully she’ll like it and maybe it will give her a different perspective. Thank you so much!

      Filipino food as cooked by a Filipino American is what you mean. Sitaw and kalabasa in ginger, garlic, onion and gata is not unhealthy. Tortang talong is not unhealthy. Laswa, pinakbet, dinengdeng is not unhealthy. Mongong ginisa is not unhealthy. Kinilaw is not unhealthy. Ensaladang talong is not unhealthy.

      @@dearmadeline unfortunately we cannot regulate other peoples feelings. However we can control our individual actions and try to understand why someone will feel that way. Simply calling people sensitive does not get to the root of the actual issue. I appreciate how she approached this video because it shows that she cares and respects. We do live in a PC culture and navigating it can be extremely frustrating, but when we put the frustration aside and meet people Eye to Eye we start to understand where they’re coming from. Not all the time it’s from people being sensitive or overreacting, it’s from history, pain, misrepresentation, appropriation, and lack of credit to the original culture that created something(while others profit). Obviously this is not what she is trying to do, but her ability to talk about the issue shows that she sees and hears those who have genuine concern. While I do not agree with people that says she is culturally appropriating, I respect and commend her response. 💝

You not only make beautiful dishes, you give us beautiful encouraging words -- often opening up your life to us, selflessly. You are a creator, an artist, a beautiful soul. ❤️
    Unfortunately, there are people who have the desire to dim the light of other's, & it's something I've learned -- I'll likely never understand. That's ok because neither you nor I have to take on the shadows of other's. Let them keep that darkness while *you* continue to shine... ✨

    I have to admit, I tend to feel offended when people point the finger at anyone for “cultural appropriation,” when they are usually just upset that it is someone who does not come from the specific culture, or because what is being represented about that culture is not “traditional.” A person can love and appreciate the food, music, dances, rituals, clothing, art, language, etc., without appropriation. There is a big difference between enjoying, learning, and celebrating a beautiful thing you have learned to love, and disrespecting the culture. That comment left on your video about Italian-style food you made is insulting. Food and all the cultural traditions I mentioned above, are things that are passed down and shared amongst family, friends, and community; our friends and communities are a blend of people from all kinds of cultures, does that mean we cannot make a recipe shared with us by someone we know out of fear of being blamed for cultural appropriation? That is nonsense.

    As an Indian here, I believe that it becomes offensive when a person acts like they know exactly how a dish is cooked even if they are not from that culture. Being open to criticism (as a food blogger) and accepting that you probably won't fully understand a dish and significance of a dish from a different culture, yet enjoying that dish to it's fullest is cultural appreciation - And you do that perfectly! I would love to see you make Indian dishes, if you are ever comfortable, and I think many of my fellow Indians here would love it too!!

    What you did of researching and learning about the cuisine before posting is actually very considerate.
    A very recent NYTimes Cooking Instagram post failed to do this to a curry chicken from Singapore and there was an uproar over how the cook prepared the dish and came close to nothing that the recipe was based on.
    There was a lack of consideration to the recipe, the originator of the recipe and the dish itself.

    I don’t think there is such thing as cultural appropriation. It’s literally food. It’s not that important. At the end of the day, the food is going into your stomach. Make whatever you want and eat whatever your heart desires. I don’t know why that dude brought up cultural appropriation because there are so many food bloggers and chefs that cook a bunch of cuisines. His comment was pure stupid. There’s literally people like Gordon Ramsay cooking other cuisines.

      i can argue that there is such thing and the phrase has important role in society; the rest of your comment is fully correct
      usually people of certain cultures can be discriminated for it and if white people start doing the same itll be "quirky" and "interesting" and they wont get discriminated and afaik thats the proper use of that phrase

    • @olleheyb
      @olleheyb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Food isn’t that important? Food is history, culture, and incredibly personal for many people. There are definitely more nuanced conversations to be had about cultural appropriation sans defensiveness and being flippant about the matter, and if people aren’t going to engage with sincerity and respect for differing opinions then people should just keep their opinions to themselves.

      @@Vincent-ds3kc can you elaborate more on why? If that’s your opinion, that’s totally fine, but others feel very differently and their opinion is no less valid than yours. I feel like you saying “it’s just food it’s not important” is writing off as frivolous that food is a symbol of people’s culture and identity, and so it makes sense if people are going to be sensitive about it.

    It breaks my heart that someone can justify restricting someone’s creativity, escape, or hobby with “cultural appropriation”. Cooking is about love and embracing new recipes, not stealing and claiming as your own. Also, there is no one way for a recipe , everyone’s individuality contributes to their own version of that one significant dish. So, when everyone gathers at the table to eat, we can learn a new recipe. I make food from many cultures and share my recipes, but have never claimed it the correct way or superior. But rather cook from my heart in hopes other will enjoy it too!! If it were not for sharing, what would be have?

    Hey auntie, don't be so discouraged about people being straight up asses to you just because they think you appropriate cultures. Here in Brazil, for example, there is a city called São Paulo that has a lot of different immigrants from different countries. So, here the food actually started to blend a lot having Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, many Arabic countries, Jews, Russian and people from close countries too. Some foods are adjusted to our taste here, like a little less pepper, a little more of something, different variations of many recipes. The point here is, as long as you are able to enjoy the food, and you just respect the cultures from all over the world, there is absolutely nothing wrong to modify. Things change, pizza in Italy isn't the same as 300 years ago, but it's still OK, so why isn't it OK for you to adapt a recipe to YOUR diet and needs? There isn't anything wrong with that, keep your head up and open always.
    I have a suggestion for you for a very traditional dish from my country: Feijoada. I'd love to see your spin on this recipe!

    Cultural misappropriations.. another term people use who are offended. 🤦‍♀️
    You show so much respect how on earth are people offended?.
    My view as a non vegan? Please show people like me all the different foods. There are a lot more like me who want an understanding and to learn than those who hate
    Just block those haters and remove their comments.
    Do what makes you happy and please allow people like me to drool over the beautiful dishes you make.
    Love and hugs x❤

    food is food is food is food. if you respect and are thankful for what you are eating, there's no such thing as cultural appropriation with food. I'm sure there are plenty of non-minority people who enjoy Taco Tuesday and they are probably the same ones who scream cultural appropriation. You bring respect, understanding, love and passion into all the videos you make- regardless of the culture from which its from. Do not let the virtue signalers push you down, you know the respect you have, you know the honor you bring to this platform. You know what you're doing is right, avoid cancel culture and live this life with passion.

    i'm a filipino, and i can say that you can't appropriate a dish! well, at least for me. you see, i have indigenous blood, and we make an ilocano dish called "igado" here. it's made out of liver, intestines and pork, with some carrots and potatoes; they're usually stirfried together, but somehow i didn't like it. but this changed when my mom had her own version of it. she basically did the same thing, but she put turmeric powder and fish sauce! it came out yellow and a little weird, but it tasted sooo good. usually the innards would be fishy (i don't know what 'malansa' is in english, sorry) and it would be just plain. but adding those unusual spices made the dish taste meatier, more interesting and something of our own. so, don't be afraid to twist a few ingredients on your recipes, it might just come out better than expected!

    I call it cultural appreciation rather than appropriation. As long as people are not doing anything to offend/completely slaughtering the recipe, then who can complain? And even if people do tweak the recipe to their own tastes/preferences, that's another modification for the family recipe book 😊 if it's good, congregate, eat, be happy!
