As a candlemaker, I greatly enjoyed this content! Mica isn't great for candles because it clogs the wick, but it can be used in wax melts and as an exterior coating for pillar/taper candles. Evan's candle drowned because of two reasons: the diameter of the wick was too small for the container, and the mica clogged the wick, limiting the flame. The cheap kit is very close to a real candlemaking set up, actually! The pots I use are taller and have a plastic handle to avoid heat transfer. I could see you guys doing pretty well at your next candlemaking attempts!

The wax shrinks as it cools and pulls away from the center.
I'm trying really hard to get into candle making, mostly for personal use, but my biggest struggle is color. I can't seem to find wax appropriate dyes anywhere. Do you have any recommendations?
@@nicholekam5527 wax expands when warm and shrinks when cool. The edges cool faster, and thus hold the shape of it, but then as it center cools, it shrinks. Many solids do this, but paraffin is REALLY bad about it, soy less so. You can sometimes get the opposite with ice cubes when the water is really pure. :D

In candle making "too much" turns into normal while drying. Dark color wax dries into pastel, and a couple drops of scent turns into nothing. So adding extra just makes it better

When the candle caved in, it was because wax and other solids like to expand or shrink when they cool. Ice expands when it freezes, wax and butter shrink. Certain metals also shrink when cool.
How do you avoid this?
@@carlavidal8723 well you can’t really, it’s just certain materials chemistry...
@@carlavidal8723 certain waxes it’s better to pour at certain temps and you need to pour at a steady level pace it also helps if you warm the container/jars before pouring the wax in. If it does cave or bubble depending on the severity you can fix it with a heat gun or blow dryer
I own this exact candle maker and the best way to avoid this outcome is to take it slow, too much hot wax being poured in at once always causes this, unless you take the time to fill the cave in with more wax

As someone who makes candles, I was just waiting for them to discover the wax collapse! Also, in my experience, usually the "bottom plug" of molds is actually the top of the candle, so after demolding you flip it over and have the nice flat surface as the top, and the mountainy pour over is hidden underneath.

I like to use crayons to color candles, and I typically go for the dip the string in the wax, then dip it in cold water, then back in the wax method for creating candles. You get a cool layering effect and can shape it however you want.
It depends on whether you car about fumes or not... Not to mention types of wax...

Yes but crayons are pigment based which can clog the wick and stop the candle from burning as well.

a tip: add the essential oils at the very end because the heat will make the scent dissolve as soon as you put it in!
edit: it ends mountain-y when you pour it too hot!
The reason why the wax in katelyn's kit took so long to melt was because it was beeswax, whereas the wax evan was using was soy wax. Beeswax has a much higher melting point than soy wax, which is why it took so long. When I make candles with beeswax I just cover the lid and chill, occasionally stirring.
As a barista, that is definitely a pitcher for foaming milk

As a professional candle pourer, its also a pitcher for wax! We use these daily where I work for tea lights and votives.
We both need pitchers that can withstand high temperatures and pour a steady stream. Dual purpose!

@@xarzneimittel8220 because it's a very specific piece of equipment you'd only use for one thing. It takes up space and is only rarely used because it doesn't have many uses.
A banana slicer works great for bananas, but can't cut anything else. A knife can cut bananas and also other things so it makes more sense to not buy the banana slicer and just use a knife for example.

@@bbvv2967 rice cookers have more then one use (steaming stuff too) but even if it was a single use if you eat rice with every meal its worth it.

I used to work for a resorts activity center. We would offer candle making to our guests. Def. Prefer the metal pot option. We used a thicker vessel directly on the hot plate and it worked great. We could melt large quantities at once . Also highly recommend picking up candle vessels, such as tealight holders, at the dollar tree. Works like a charm. Embeds are fun to add as well. Plastic & clay charms or even natural options like fern leafs with spa scents and soft pastel colors. So many options! The fan favorite was hidden "surprise" items. We would use the little gashpon(sp?) plastic eggs, hide a toy or charm then hide it in the candle. The lower melting temp of soy was is best for embeds. :-)Thanks for sharing, LOVE your content!!

I'll proceed by seeing myself out, if you don't mind.
I feel like the expensive kit would be perfect for children. The low temperature warming means that, depending on their age, they'd only need very light parental supervision or none at all.
Perfect for kids and preteens who want a baby step into candle/soap making. Then if they start outgrowing the warmer before they use up all the wax and wicks, they can just migrate those over to a more "adult" setup using kitchen appliances.
Every time Evan had to put the blowtorch away, a little bit of his soul died.

As for why the center of the candle collapsed, most materials shrink when cooled (except water because water is weird). The wick may have absorbed some wax but I think that would be a negligible amount.... Perhaps not.

Also, soy wax melts at a lower temperature and that makes those candles safe to be massage candles.

If the room you're cooling candles in fluctuates in temperature at all, you'll get the cave-ins.

I had one of these as a kid and they always caved in and required more wax at the end.
It can also happen if you pour the wax while it’s too hot. This can be fixed by either just adding more wax to fill the holes or by using a blow torch to melt the existing wax so it can cool level.
@@lexthequeer Right, I was going to mention something about learning the right temp to where it's not too hot. The way wax cools is just so uneven that the less it has to cool the less uneveness there is. It sounds like I know something about this but the neighbor lady growing up was into it.

This reminds me. As a kid, I tried candle making. Using mostly leftovers. Mixing white and colored to create new colors.
One time I was too lazy and the wax began to set at the wall of the can. With a whisk, I mixed it. But instead of melting the setting part in the molten part, the consistency I achieved resembled ice cream.
With a scoop, I made a few balls and put them in an ice cream bowl. Leaving it out on the dinner table, after a while some people started poking a finger at it to see if the ice wasn't melting. Yes, foolish me forgot the wick.
As a candle maker, I'm dying laughing at that cheap kit. And then the directions from the expensive one and your reactions.
Like how they think you can use mica and soap colorant in a candle lol. Sure mica shows up, but it's not by far the best when it comes to coloring a candle. I thought it would just sink to the bottom tbh. Also, how they thought you could get away with just a few drops of an essential oil and it would still be just as strong if you burned it later. People have to use more fragrance than they realize when it comes to candles that will actually throw a scent.

@@bakende1103 We always used crayons for coloring candles. I'm sure there's stuff that's made for it, but it worked.
I was wondering what liquid dye they used in the beginning. I've used both powder dye and liquid dye in candle making and both types mix very well (although some differences do exist). I thought maybe they should have let the wax cool a little before adding it (I'm not a candle expert however...)

Here is a tip: if you want to be able to smell the scent a lot then add TONSSSSSS of essential oil drops instead of just one or two and always remember to make candles in clear cups so you can see the lovely candles!

you should typically wait 2 weeks before burning a homemade candle, my dad and I are both candle makers and we've found burning a candle before the two week mark will end up melting too fast due to the still-soft soy wax

@@noctilucera7585 Mica powders clog the wick, preventing it from burning. They are perfectly fine to use in wax melts, but not good to use in candles.

I watched this 4 months ago and it lit my maker heart. Launching my candle vibes in 3 days! Pray for me! I had started making candles in 1999, but had kids instead of candles for 20 years. You reminded me I could make my own and I haven’t bought a candle scents 😂👏
No reason for Evan's candles not to be enjoyed - even with the wrong wick. Just heat them with a candle warmer 🙂
In my experience, I find it easier to use unwaxed wicks and then just wax them yourself with the same wax you use for the candle.

You guys inspired me to try making candles with reclaimed wax. The very first one was ready tonight and it works great with a nice steady flame, no soot and a perfect melt pool! (Beginner's luck, probably) 😄 Thanks for the inspiration to try something new while giving our stash of old candles new life! (And it only cost about $7 for the 60 pc wick kit) 👍
