I've never tried making SGRS myself but comparing professionally made dextrin vs SGRS I definitely prefer the SGRS. The professionally made stuff is lighter in color and much finer ground, which might have something to do with the end result taking longer to absorb/expanding? Usually the SGRS takes a bit longer to dry but once it dries it's rock solid. I love these experiment videos, btw, keep up the good work!

Nice test!! Thx I use dextrin but pump my stars under a lot more pressure. It works for me

Great video my friend. Lots of info and of coarse the testing. Love the experimenting. I would say 'dextrin' because it is easier to get and no wait time to pump or cut. Did you do one with new GP and dextrin. When I saw the first one go my first thought was, yep too much dextrin but, do you think they would work in a much bigger shell?

You mean if the star had more time to fall? I guess this time it'd be still too slow burn rate of those particular stars

I found instructions for making SGRS somewhere on the internet and followed them to the letter. I believe it came out perfect and had an off-white appearance, not dark. It's a little work but a little goes a long way as you don't use quite as much (this was mentioned in those instructions. FYI Don't use a Teflon coated baking pan when making your own SGRS as it will pull the Teflon right off the pan! Oh, yes, I used Sushi rice, not Uncle Ben's converted rice. Don't use instant rice!

Love the sgrs but I'll stick to dextrin for simplicity.

Dextrin is great but I'm hitting up you all on here as the humidity is killing me. What would you use if not dextrin, match and lift. stars i can keep dry. Trying white corn starch for match instead of dextrin now and granulating with red gum works but slows it alot. I know only as fast as you need but it took alot to get fast polverone.

was wondering why its common practice for 50-50 mix of water and alchohol? why not just 1 or the other?

Dextrine and SGRS both are excellent binders but both have different uses.
Dextrin is preferred everywhere but SGRS is used for toro method of rolled stars because toro having high viscosity is good for making rolled stars.
If you take cut stars made with dextrin and put it in star roller and if you add next composition paste over it then cut star made with dextrin absorbs water instantly and distroys its shape this thing is not happening with SGRS thats themain reason why SGRS is preffered for toro method. Another advantage of SGRS is that stars made with SGRS becomes waterproof and absorbs no moisture from atmostsphere while star with dextrin absorbs moisture and not waterproof. If you put 9 mm cut star made with dextrin in water within half hour it starts becoming in paste form, and same star with SGRS remains unchanged underneath water for 2 hours.
This is major difference between SGRS and Dextrin.
Dextrin dries faster and SGRS takes 3 time more time than dextrin to dry stars.

    Hello,
Did ya get the Rice to work better than dextrin.
I have made my dextrin for a long time now but change of states it's failing me(.Home made is sticker I think) I did ask ya about the binding with cold water only, as I saw it on my shelf today and want to give it a try on granulating lift. I have read Sumuzu stuff for years and he uses it in production but I thought it needed to be cooked like wheat starch.
    Bob.
