  • This is a basic tutorial on how to polish a concrete counter top. This done with a standard orbital sander and a garden hose. The concrete polishing pads are the cheap set that you can find on eBay or amazon for about $13 shipped. Be sure to stay updated by subscribing to my channel. I am working on a series from mold to counter top.

    QUESTION PLEASE. We’ve been following this process all along. It’s going well and your videos are very helpful. But how do you wet sand a countertop on brand new hickory cabinets? How do you keep spraying it off in a kitchen?

      Its very easy to do. If you get around to it, hut me up with questions.
      Its just messy once you get to wet sanding-polishing.

    I want it very smooth with a matte shine. I was considering using higher grit sandpaper to achieve this so I wouldn’t have to use a sealer and leave it glossy.
    (just ordered the pads from amazon, THANKS!)

    • @MechanicLife

      You can do one of two things...I have done both. You can purchase the sealer in a matte finish. If that is still two shinny for you, you can hit that with 3000 and do a light buff on it. Just make sure you wet sand at 3000 and use a block of some sort with light pressure.
      You can achieve very smooth with 1000 or 1200 pretty easy. I have taken raw stock steel down to a mirror finish with those and a little polish.

    • @jamesfrierson9971
      @jamesfrierson9971 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      so, you're saying shine up to around 1000 and the seal with MATTE finish sealer? that would probably do the trick.Thank you!

    • @MechanicLife
      @MechanicLife 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. What I am saying is you can just buy matte finish and use that for the whole project. What I was saying was if your matte finish ends up to shinny in the end, you can wetsand that matte finish if you want to take more shine out of it.

    I'd like to try this on my outdoor patio, i have saved a tree stump and would like to add a bar top. Do you think you can do a free standing bar top, or would I have to add multiple supports for under the top. Also, can you build a form that is not rectangular? What would you use for curved edges?

    Great videos! I have some outdoor concrete countertops which have been neglected for now seven or eight years. They are dirty, have a little bit of mold, the texture is rough and gritty and not smooth. What would you recommend as a process to deep clean and refinish to a shiny smooth finish?

    Hello, I have a question. I made an outside bar, and I made a concrete counter top. However I don’t know anything about masonry. The counter top is rough. What can I do to this to make it smooth? I was think epoxy, but don’t know anything about that either. Thank you.

    Why do I get circle marks even down to 400 grit pad? I’m using a random orbital only 1 x speed, keeping the top wet w hose.

    Is there a need to add anything if you polish the countertop up to 3000 grit? Seems like if sealer wouldn’t stick to it nothing else would either.???

    • @MechanicLife

      I only take it down to 800 - 1200 max. Anything over its like painting a car...nothing will stick because its so smooth. Any reason you are going down to 3000?

    Do you find that your sealer scratches easily or will bleach or vinegar stain it?

    • @montanamade1114
      @montanamade1114  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find that the sealer is really tough. I haven't had any scratches with this brand it it see a lot of use. If there is standing water on it, the area will temporarily darken. It will disappear once it dries though.

      @otallono 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      the surface on the one in the video is also pretty poor because of the silicone so do what he did. I'm sure it will still look great. Next time, you need to run silicone, no tape needed and pray on window cleaner and wipe the lines straight with your finger and it's a perfect silicone line. Wetting your finger also works too.

    The orbital sander is good for large flat surfaces, what about polishing the front edge, how would you do that? Hand pad??

    • @montanamade1114
      @montanamade1114  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was still able to use the orbital for the front edges. The edges next to the wall where a corner situation happens is where i go to a hand pad and that is just to take the milk layer off to match the rest of the concrete.

  • @Tonythetiger2101

    Great video, can you go straight to an 800 out of the mold? I’m just looking to get the concrete smooth and not show any aggregate

    • @montanamade1114
      @montanamade1114  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can. Its a tough dance to keep the aggregate exposure to a minimum. If you dye the concrete you are basically sanding off that matte surface which is really helpful for a guide. You can hit it with 800 which will keep the rocks at bay. If you keep going down to like a 1200 grit paper you loose adhesion opportunity with your clear coat. Make sure to vibrate the heck out of your mix as well. If you are just pouring a slab without any inserts just trowel down the top as smooth as you can get it. Good luck with it.

    I have a question for you.. When you start the sanding part on concrete tops, does it normally get rougher before it starts getting smoother? I started sanding and the aggregate is alot higher than the concrete noow? what do I do?

    • @MechanicLife
      @MechanicLife 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What grit pad are you using? The lower grits will expose more. When you start getting into the 600-2000 it will start to flatten out.
