I did the same thing as you and had a gritty texture to my railing. I wish I had used a gel stain, but c'est la vie. I might put a clear coat over it after I sand it and try smoothing it out.
I’m considering the same and from my research, they say to do a satin or semi-gloss because it’s a high touch area and matte isn’t easy to clean/maintain.
The roller probably had loose lint that mixed with the paint.

How has the longevity been with the paint since it doesn’t appear you sanded before applying the first coat?
yes that was definitely my mistake, its surprisingly held up just a few places needing touchup. i plan to post an update video soon
